Sustainability is an essential part of urban architecture and in structuring the city fabric. Furthermore, it is an essential application to mid-rise high performance building. Hence in this project, the design aims for a self-sustaining system that reduces carbon emission, waste and energy consumption during construction and the later everyday performance and maintenance. At the same time, the building morphes harmoniously into the context; bringing energy and visual delight to the neighbourhood. For this 5-storey office building, this application comes in four main categories; construction material, rain collection plant system, natural lighting and controlled use of air-conditioning. in details, the building uses cross laminated timber panel to reduce glare from the harsh sun at noon, and light pollution to the traffic road and residential area. Green walls and internal vertical garden are applied to manage stress from office workload to carbon emission. Rain is collected to sustain the plantation. Sky lights are used for the Multi-use Hall, while double glazing is applied onto the whole facade of the office building. The use of air-conditioning is inevitable for the office building as the scale of the site is relatively small and compact. Every meter counts and has to be carefully measured. Whereas for the multi-use hall takes the philosophy of a warehouse, it is designed to be thermally insulated and does not require any air-conditioning. The site is located at the cross road of City Road and Darlington Road at Darlington, right next to the vibrant and creative region of Newtown. The site also has a historic focus on horticulture and recreational activities such as sports and dance. Ultimately, the project NOARK does not only deliver an office building, but also a multi-use hall that can accessed by the public during weekends and special occasions. Each rentable floors could hold 20 work hubs with meeting room, game room, executive office and toilets. The top floor is a common leisure area as a momentary vacation from work.

Situated in Glebe, the existing site has a rich history that can be dated back to the mid 1800s. It has convenient access to transportation and grocery shopping nearby. Today, this vibrant area hosts a community of different cultural backgrounds and home structures; young or settled families, international or local students, single professional, and couples. The project is a 3-townhouse residential development that delivers maximum living spatial efficiency within each 4.8m x 25.5m dwelling. The main programs are living, dining, cooking, sleeping, bathroom, working and leisure (yoga, game, and guest room).

Micro Apartments - Fovo Studios Site 2016 & 2018 Year Project Studio leader Contact Methods Key words

2nd Year Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture Design Studio: Inhabitation individual project Mike Day Michael.Day-1@uts.edu.au +61 2 95148946 Rhinoceros, Photoshop rendering, conceptual model making, Illustrator Residential | Urban inhabitation | Compact Micro living
Since the Unité d’Habitation, it was the beginning of modern high density living in the form of a vertical city. There were many attempts to further explore such possibility. But after the notorious demolition of Pruitt Igoe to the numerous gimicky postmodern architecture today, as pointed out by Koolhaas, the question of the appropriateness of high density habitation in the contextual urban environment has been raised and experimented. In the complexity of the urban context and different culture of the environment, how can we accommodate the growing urban population, and at the asme time our buildings are woven into the urban fabric without disturbing the context. This project looks at the same question and pushes to another possibility; micro apartments in the Surry Hills heritage area. Surry Hills has been a district to industrial workshops and design studios. There are much young professional living, studying and working in the area. Hence the programs are, individual micro apartments, a big common area on ground floor where they can work and chat with their friends and others. This space would transform into an exhibition space for artworks and design showcases. On the upper floor, there is a quieter, enclosed common space for reading and studying. The project contains: 21 micro apartments with an average floor plan area of 40m²; 2 security entrances one on Fouveaux Street and the other on Dixon Street; 2 fire exits with generous spaces; 2wo common areas, 1 on ground floor and the other on level 1; 2 lifts located at two entrances; Generous window openings for all apartments. And additional rood windows for apartments on the top level; A gym space and office area located on ground floor.

How many units can we fit into the existing faรงade of Fovo Studio? Micro-living does not equate to cans of sardine and potential fire risks and danger. Instead, the design aims to balance the fast-paced city living with the engaging surburban community atmosphere at Surry Hills. At the same time, it offers comfort, privacy, maximised living space, shared workshop space and smart, spatially efficient furniture compartments for each creative prefessionals.

Sixth-side Café, Moore Park Site 2018 Year Project Studio leader Contact Methods Key words Link
Moore Park, Sydney NSW 2021
1st Year Diploma of Building Design Moore Park: Cafe Design (individual project winning design) Milica Cuca Milica.Cuca1@tafensw.edu.au Revit, hand drafting, sketching, Rhinoceros for form exploration, Photoshop, Revit animation + Premier Industry | Commercial | Entertainment | Leisure | Sustainability https://youtu.be/zR6Xsq2r7Hs
Moore Park has a long history of entertainment and recreation, and today it remains one of Sydney’s most recreational and historical sites. The design looks at the possibility of creating a tranquil ‘power station’ for visitors travelled a long journey to participate in their activities and events. The ‘visitors’ may be cyclists, joggers, families, and tourists. This task was done for an in-class competition where students were to present a complete set of conceptualisation of design and Drawing Application package in 6 weeks time to the teachers and juries. The mandatory program for 3D modelling and 2D drawing set was Revit. And the winnder was judged and voted by both the teachers and students. My project was selected as the ‘best’ among 30 other students. One of the comment by one of the juries was ‘the most sitespecific design and solution for the site’.
1
The Sixth-Side Café went through a series of iterative drawing process to find the most appropriate angle and dimension for the interior space. Ultimately in the process, the spatial quality and form of the design were gradually realized and created. After been selected as the Winner design, the project went into Construction Certificate application packaging. The final task of the project was a Revit video walkthrough done and editted in Premiere in 5 days. It demonstrates the interiority and spatial qualities of the design. Through this training, I developed a thorough understanding of architecture in relations to gravity, construction and physics. At the same time, the understanding of ergonomics were enhanced greatly. I am more than capable of transforming and visualising intangible ideas.

Emersion - Callan Park Reading Room Site 2015 Year Project Studio leader Contact Methods
Heritage listed parkland, Callan Park, LilyField NSW 2040
1st Year Bachelor of Design in Interior Architecture Context: Image and Making (Generative methods) individual project Juan Cabello Juan.Cabello@uts.edu.au Hand drawing, 1:20 physical model, Photoshop rendering
Callan Park is known for its heritage and natural seashore landscape, the reading room ‘Emersion’ almost becomes part of the landscape rather than visually disrupt the natural lines of the site and disturb the passer-by. When users arrive, they would feel emersed into the natural landscape, both physically and atmospherically. A place where local residents of all ages and accessibility could read by the shore of Callan Park. A heterotopic space is user-centered and user-defined. And there would be one element that ties the space and user together. In this project, this element is a multi-functioning wall; it divides the space, the public and private, and it also stores, holds and protects. The project started off designing a wall with working and resting functions tailored specifically for designers and/or design related professions. The wall is almost a shelf that stores devices, books, desk, stairs and bed. Ergonomics were focused in detail in order to create a comfortable, easy storage and easy-of-reach environment to tackle the unnecessary hassles in the everyday intensive workload. The choice of light-coloured oak timber complements the attempt of creating a stress-free environment. Later in the design of the Reading Room, the understanding of ergonomics and storage walls largely inspired the light weight structure of the design and the idea of Emersion. The Shelving Walls have a similar function as the promethium columns as they support the roof. They divide the space for different users while hold the items that these users would need.

Looking from a distance, there are two clean, white horizons glide through the vertical seashore landscape. Tranquil and emersed. The facade would be as invisible as possible, so transparent glass was considered to be a more appropriate material. With a thin white roof and slab below, it is imagined that two clean, white horizons merely cut through the vertical landscape as you look from a distance.
On entering the space from the front door, one find the reception desk, the cafe, and communal conversation area. If you come in a group and are here for school work, or local clubs, you are welcomed in the Group Reading Area in the left wing of the space. For those who need a total quiet heterotopic space for meditation or reading, they may go pass the group reading area, through the glass door, and finally into this concealed, yet transparent space. At the same time, the frosted glass puts users dwelling about on the green lawn, while still private and secured. Visitors with children are welcomed in the Children’s Reading area in the right wing. The space is facilitated with a spacious bathroom for parental convenience. Otherwise, the gent and ladies’ rooms are right behind the office area. The ramp entrance is deliberately designed for the accessible.

Other works
Outside of design and study, portraiture, photography, software and painting in various scales are other mediums that I enjoy practicing as they document the people I meet, the scenes I see, the atmosphere I feel wherever I travel to. They have been assisting with my building up of the understanding and exploration of Architecture, and finding the direction for my future role and sense of responsibility as an architect.
‘Flowers & Vase’
2017 - 2018 Medium
Acrylic paint on canvas
A remake of one of his artworks, ‘Roses and Peonies’, which I saw in the Van Gogh exhibition in July 2017, Melbourne. The essence of vitality and a love for life is expressed strongly by the colours and strokes stays fresh in my mind. A piece of work requires consistent observation, ‘digestion’, and endure a period of collection, abstraction and the final creation by the designer/artist.

‘Be Fearless; Be who you are’
2019 Medium
6151 HB pencil, 6610 HB pencil, 6B pencil, on XG41616. 16K sketch paper
The idea of drawing this portrait came from this century old photograph taken in the early 1900’s. It only reads, ‘Young Berber woman of Tunisia’; this girl has more to tell than this. The Francs attached to the headwear, the unique face tattoo and make-up make up the striking beauty of this girl. Pencil was the only medium used. Each stroke and each observation allowed me to understand the touch of the fabric, the weight of the jewels and currency, the facial muscles that created this meaningful grin, and her dignity and firmness of will as a Tunisian Berber woman. Architecture is not simply about the building; it is a expression of the mind and spirit of the architect and the users it serves. It is with the attempt that through this drawing study during my spare time, I build up my abiliy and skills of perception and observation of different people from different times and ages.

‘One must work long and hard to arrive at the truthful. What I want and set as my goal is damned difficult, and yet I don’t believe I’m aiming too high.’ —Vincent Van Gogh
