A day on the river can be as restorative as it is fun, especially when you can completely switch off.

We have compiled our top 10 ‘must-haves’ for a day out cruising in your day boat, all of which will easily fit into the storage onboard.

1. LIFE JACKETS & LIFE RING

As a minimum, make sure your boat is equipped with one for every passenger. Hopefully, you’ll never need them but always make sure they’re maintained and up to the task.

2. FULLY CHARGED PHONE & CHARGER

We know you want to get away from digital noise, but always carry a phone and charger for emergencies onboard. Always let others know your route and estimated time to be back too, as there may not always be a good signal.

3. A MAP/ COMPASS/GPS

You’ll need to know where you’re going and importantly, you’ll need to tell others your exact location if you get stuck. Always take a back-up navigational source just in case.

4. FOOD/PICNIC /SUPPLIES

No doubt a picnic will be part of your plan anyway, but always keep some non-perishable snacks and drinks handy in one of your cupboards onboard, just in case you are out longer than planned and the kids get hangry!

5. A BASIC FIRST AID KIT

Pack a ready-made kit or make up your own, adapting to whatever plans you have and who you are taking with you. Don’t forget sun protection too, even on cloudy days.

6. CLOTHING & GOOD FOOTWEAR

Layers on cruising days are ideal but it’s also a good idea to keep a blanket and jacket onboard. And don’t forget a sun hat and sunglasses! Wear shoes that are OK to get wet and will dry quickly. Light coloured rubber soles are perfect.

7. GAMES/ CARDS

Don’t forget to pack some small fun games to enjoy with the family. A ball, kite or even croquet is perfect to take too for any time you stop off and explore the countryside.

7. A CAMERA & BINOCULARS

There is an abundance of wildlife and scenery around UK waterways, and to capture it in action is such a rare opportunity. Remember to take a camera, or use your phone, and some binoculars to really make the most of being among all creatures great and small in their natural habitats.

8. PEN AND PAPER

You never know when these will come in handy on land or water! Record your journey, wildlife you have spotted and any hidden gems that you’d love to return to.

9. TOWELS/SWIMWEAR

Essential for a hot day and if you’re planning to have a dip, keep a set stowed away all summer for those impromptu moments or if the weather heats up unexpectedly.

10. ACTIVITY & SPORTS EQUIPMENT

A day boat is perfect for a spot of fishing and watersports. Equipment will rarely be needed off your boat, so keep it all together in one of the storage cupboards onboard, so everything is easy to get to every time you are on the water.
