Membrane- Proposal for New York Sea Level Rises To confront with the sea level rising of New York, We designed an idea for protecting certain areas against water by wearing a “membrane’. Deriving from the intelligent components, we created a surface system that can reveal a continually changing expression. The transforming surface can combine the multiple functions such as waterproof, lighting and agricultural planting. Rather than a traditional hierarchy design thinking, each component on the surface has equal essentiality. It is a irreducible integrity. As the surface serves as a waterproof for the buildings, in turn, the building provides structure support to the surface. To blur the boundary, the surface seamlessly dissolves the old and rigid layer system of the buildings. Thus, the space between the old building and the new surface is totally fluid. Then, all sufaces form a new lattice system on the site. Finally, the system simultaneously evolves into an unprecedented ecological area in New York. Tokyo Night Club (Midterm Working, Still in Developing) Ali Rahim Studio, UPenn Partner: Jiannan Liu In this studio, compare the traditional design thinking which is more emphisis the outside form, we was required to use a inside-out thinking. That is, at first step we should comcentrate some interior space and material qualities such as bony, softness or hardness. Then we model carefully to fulfill such qualities. During the field trip in Tokyo, we select a site for this night club. Then we will research the part to whole stradegy to develop the whole architecture. This work is still in process until the end of this semester.
Virus Infection Studio Formal Efficency UPenn Professor: Erick Carcamo In my mind, virus is a kind of self-organization structure. It can selfduplicate, self-expand. I want to create a architecture unit like virus. A virus contains the structure and surface. Also they form a volume inside. To get more formal potentials I create five kinds of ‘virus’. Each one has its unique formal quality. Each type of virus can accumulate together into a mass group. Each group can also accumulate to each other into a larger system. The antennas and the thorn of virus soppose as its structure. The surface grows from the structure and form a space to inhibit in. A virus need a host to plug-in. This host in my proposal is the existing architecture. When a building is step into decay. The virus infect in the building and detect the structure of building for its self-increment. In terms of function, thiese units can serve as multiple using like residential or playing.

Academic Work, UPenn Tutor: Justin Gules
This work is a proposal for New York BMW pavilion. What is the most concern to me is the form. That is, how to creat a iconic mark to attract people come to join this urban activity.

By establishing a permeable relationship between the architectural space and its surrounding natures, such as the sky, mountain, water, and trees, we try to amplify the unique spirit of the site - the floating energy and vacancy.

Macau - Urban Refreshing of Sidakou Area Academic Work at Huaqiao University 2011 Sponsored by Macau Culture Affairs Bureau Tutor: Yuan Long
As the most density city of the world, Macau’s city developing history is kind of a self-organization development without little up-bottom planning. This kind of urban characteristic on one hand make Macau a amazing city with such a city energy. On the other hand, without any design some areas which has much more urban vitalization potential are in a chaos level currently. Our site, Sidakou, contains multiple urban elements such as a small plaza, some historical architectures and the appropinquity to the city bay. However, whitout any necessary organization. such a potential area now is quite chaotic and disorder for living. Making it a cold zone of traveling of Macau. Using a ‘acupuncture therapy’ we do some surgery in this area to organize the positive elements such as plaza, city bay and small parks into a contiunous experience. Thus, this area is refreshed into a active zone to attract people coming in.
