WITH LOVE, THE PHILIPPINES “Create an authentic cutlery set for the airport lounge of an Asian airline.”

“It’s the heart that wins” The Philippine Airlines aims to focus on “The Heart of the Philippines”, instigating the pakikisama trait – the inclination of the Filipinos to have an interpersonal relationship and get along with each other. The airline company aspires to allow travellers to feel the warmth and geniality of the Filipino nation. Philippine Mahogany Plate: D 195 x H 30 mm Bowl: D 135 x H 30 mm Saucer: D 90 x H 30 mm

To highlight this trait, the concept of offering support and aid would be crucial. Rather than appearing fragile or delicate, the piece should highlight the comfort, stability and security that one gets when feeling the warmth of a person’s heart.

PROCESS A gift for my old self - someone who, coming from the Western suburbs became used to the Southeast Asian, provincial/ simple life but once again moved to a Western, more urbanised place. A gift for the Filipinos who grew up or lived away from their homeland for a significant period to help them to remember the warmth and geniality of their homeland. A series of sketches that convey the act of embracing, which is proposed to portray the notion of supporting each other with a warm and intimate act. With this, the sketches show bowls or plates that have a wider brim, demonstrating the openness that one would depict when welcoming other people.

WITH LOVE, THE PHILIPPINES Partially wood turned, each piece is also hand carved to feature the humanness of love and the act of manifesting one’s heart through their actions.

THE ASIAN SQUAT The form of the doll draws inspiration from the squatting posture of what is termed as the “Asian squat, wherein the individual is able to squat with both heels laying firmly flat on the ground. The posture is often seen to be practiced in, but not limited to, the Asian nations and communities. Thai Maedang Wood W 40 x L 63 x H 73 mm

MANOK ROLLING PIN Walnut, Philippine Mahogany, Beech Plywood, Rattan D 24 x L 270

CONCEPTUALISATION The rolling pin adheres to the vernacular culture of the Ifugaos of the mountain region in Northern Philippines. Inspired by the garments and clothing of the Ifugaos and the folk dance, Tadek, the rolling pin is based on a rooster and its roll in wedding ceremonies among the Ifugaos, as it is eventually used as a sacrifice after the courtship.

FEATURES The diameter of the rolling pin is easy even for small hands to grip while its length allows for portability. Its pointed ends allow the user to create patterns or dentures on the dough, while the rattan ball retains gaps for the user to insert the ends of the rattan in for the suspension of the rolling pin. The rattan ball that acts as a suspension strap adds a feature of effortless design and easy usage for the user

With the features assimilated into the material, form and colours of the rolling pin, the product itself attempts to tell a narrative shared among the Ifugaos.

CATCH ‘EM AIRPORT FLIGHTS

ISSUE AT FOCUS Vastness of major airports and long immigration procedures would often lead travellers to miss their flights. The implementation of the Silent Airport Policy all the more affects the travellers, more specifically foreign travellers who are unfamiliar with the airport, its procedures and the local language.

SURVEY 72 from Singapore (58), Asia (6), Europe/UK (4), US/Canada (3), Australia/NZ (1)

“I had to take a lot of time to prove myself at Nairobi in 2017.” “In Sri Lanka, due to the bombing years ago my mother couldn’t even bring me inside the airport without a ‘visitors’ ticket and passport. They eventually let her in, but even after security the airport is full of long lines and signs aren’t in any language, people also didn’t speak English. This was only my second flight alone from Sri Lanka to Berlin.” “Recently, I had a bad experience with customs officers in France. The language barrier and their lack of service contributed to the issue of not being able to claim back my VAT properly.”

A passport that is registered through and regulated by a regional or global organisation (eg. ASEAN or UN), assuming a more integrated cooperation across the nations. This enables a more seamless experience for travellers passing through immigration, allowing citizens to utilise the automated gates in local and foreign immigration gates, and eases the process for travellers to cross border. The passport also keeps track of one’s travel documents and acts as a navigational aid through the provision of maps gathered b IATA. The device uses E-ink technology and proposes for immigration gates to utilise digital stamps when indicating the arrival of the traveller on their digital passport.

VOID / MASS

Bus Stop Design Competition 2019 Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design and Media

Highlighting the qualities of the ABS building, Void / Mass features an interplay between positive and negative space, light and shadow, natural and industrial. Through a series of grooved MET panels arranged symmetrically in a sequential progression, a visual relationship is hinted between the bus stop and the building’s concave facade and step-tier levels.

NAMI

globalDrive 2019 with NTU | TUM

“globalDrive is a framework by the Institute of Automotive Technische Universität München for international student projects... on trendsetting mobility topics with relevance for the automotive industry.”

The NAMI interior is adapted to be used on the autonomous taxi concept “AUTOtaxi from the UNICARagil project. The idea of NAMI is to develop a disruptive interior for an autonomous taxi launched in 2030. HMI and Interaction NAMI is equipped with a personal asistant, which aims to give aid during the use of the autonomous vehicle and fully replaces the driver. The assistant displayed on a roof display and the interaction takes place via voice control and a smartphone app.

Armrest Control Unit The armrest has an integrated control unit to adjust in-car settings like eg. temperature settings and is fully made out of wood. The display is realised by a LED-matrix that is attached behind the wood and shines through to show the content. Privacy Box This feature offers a private space for the users in the case of taxi-sharing with other passengers, which blocks each other’s line of sight. The privacy box also enables the user to create his own atmosphere by adapting light, sound and temperature to his needs.

AQUAPADE A Project for Mistletoe inc. In collaboration with Quek Pin Yi

“The theme is Serendipity and our main context is Jurong Eco Garden. Propose a new model of the innovators’ village via proof of concepts and accurate representations.”

SERENDIPITY “Being in the right place at the right time, expecting the unexpected, and welcoming disruption as a positive aspect of research is not merely happenstance or instinctive; it is a way of knowing, an art and thus can be learned.” “Intent of discovery through exploration of serendipity in scientific research.” Kirsch, G. E., Serendipity in Rhetoric, Writing and Literacy Research. 2018.

PLAY: AN ESCAPE FROM REALITY BIOPHILIA “An inherent connection between humans and the natural world” (SG NParks)

PLAY As an immediate method to escape from reality

Creating Alternate Realities to Explore Serendipity Environments built to replicate an experience (the reality) but divergent in the material aspect (the alternate) Creating an alternate reality by involving the user’s senses Exploring the areas experiences around bodies of water - Swinging and rocking sensation of a boat ride - Light reflection on water

WATER “We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken,” Wallace J. Nichols and Céline Cousteau, Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do (2018)

AQUAPADE A private space for one to escape from reality by being immersed in the sensual elements offered by the bodies of water.

Serendipity has exciting potential as a means for innovation and it is advantageous to allow the populace in Singapore, who live in a typically pragmatic environment to experience the unexpected moments and discoveries that could question the ordinary and inspire them. The creation of an alternate reality simulates a space that triggers a memory, aiming to momentarily allow the user to escape the present and find themselves in a memory from their past. Interactions with nature and play improves our psychological state and reduces stress levels, creating space for us to accomplish more in our lives. Aquapade (aqua + escapade) presents an opportunity for visitors to Jurong Eco Garden and users of the future Jurong Innovation District to experience an alternate reality and creates a space for an interactive adventure away from daily life. Visitors are invited to engage with interactive elements and furnishings in the space, with the sensory experiences designed around the reinterpretation of how we see, feel and hear water to bring about an explorative mindset.

Watching by the Seashore Feature imitates the wave-like motion of water Sense: Visual

Rocking Element Meant for user interaction to imitate the sensation of floating on the lake. Sense: Aural

Graph of Senses to Explore

Entrance to the Space To present the visual representation of rain, but to offer a contrasting tactile experience walking through stiff pouring rain. Sense: Tactile

Ideation of Chair Necessity of a rocking element to simulate the sound of crashing waves. The user is meant to hear the sound of waves crashing as they rock the chair

Initially intended to incorporate pods in order to offer privacy to the users, which was meant to enable them to innovate for new ideas and concepts. However, the isolation may also disrupt their experience being outdoors, therefore defeating disabling them to connect with their natural surroundings. Also , the juxtaposition of having an artificial reality within a natural environment widens the platform in which the user could explore their senses, thoughts and experience whilst in Aquapade.

CREEP. DRAPE. ERUPT. Form Exploration: Definition and Interpretation of Words

Drape To cover or hang a cloth or other fabric (especially in graceful folds)

Erupt To burst forth

Creep To move slowly with the body close to the ground carefully in order to avoid to being heard/noticed

INITIAL AMALGAMATION Creep. Drape. Erupt.

FINAL AMALGAMATION Creep. Drape. Erupt.

EXPLORATION THROUGH 3D PRINTING The first print harmoniously combines the words, erupt and drape, but lacked the essence of the word, creep. Moving forward, I decided to add a sluggish feature around the base of the form in order to aptly illustrate a creep-like movement.

JUSTINNE ALETHEA CASUGA Having called various countries as my temporary homes, I grew to have a curiosity in the relationship between people and their surroundings, how culture is being fostered and what home means to different people. As a product designer, I lean towards representation and accessibility - enabling those who are less priviliged, allowing technology to be comfortable to use for those who are less adept to it, and also giving a voice to the cultures of the minorities. I value the aesthetics and form of a product, as it influences the users’ perceptions of the product and their experience whilst using it. I enjoy exploring how one could interact with a space, especially through one’s senses. For my art and designs, I enjoy experimenting with traditional techniques, such as woodworking and handcrafting, while also developing and visualising my ideas through computer-aided design programmes.
