SUSTAINABLE ECOLOGICAL ARCHITECTURE Lecture #1
Sustainable ecological system Dr. Trần Hữu Anh Tuấn tuan.tranhuuanh@uah.edu.vn 0938.545.100
CONTENT 1. Earth ecosystem 2. Carbon footprint 3. Carbon neutrality 4. Embodied energy
Ecosystem What is ecosystem?
Earth ecosystem What is ecosystem? System = living organisms + nonliving organisms A system where living organisms and nonliving components (like weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, atmosphere) are mutually linked through nutrient cycles and energy flows.

Earth ecosystem Scales of an ecosystem? - Micro: pond, puddle, tree trunk‌ - Mezzo: forest, large lake‌
- Biome : desert, aquatic, forest, grassland and tundra

Earth ecosystem Scales of an ecosystem?
Earth ecosystem What is earth ecosystem? Earth’s crust and atmosphere (5 miles high and 5 miles deep) = biosphere
Earth ecosystem Water cycle
Earth ecosystem Carbon cycle
Earth ecosystem Nitrogen cycle
Earth ecosystem Assignment 1: Give an example of an ecosystem and explain how its living organisms and nonliving components are working together Due on: 24/05/2018 (bring hard copy) and 25/05/2018 (soft copy)
Carbon footprint? GREEN HOUSE GASES
Carbon footprint? GREENHOUSE EFFECT
Carbon footprint? Amount of “greenhouse gas produced (directly or indirectly) by human activities.
Carbon footprint
Carbon footprint 1 kwh electricity = 0.527kg CO2 emission 1 km travel distance of a new light car = 0.188kg CO2 emission (1) http://www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au/pages/Information/V ehicleEmissions

Carbon footprint What is your carbon footprint? Assignment 2: Calculate your impact Due on: -----/------/2016
Carbon neutrality
Carbon neutrality - Carbon emission balance: use green power (solar panels, wind turbines‌) or purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) certified by Green-e Energy or equivalent to maintain the zero greenhouse gas introduced into the atmosphere by human activities.
Carbon neutrality - Carbon offset: to purchase Green-e Climate certified (or equivalent) credits and the amount of money will be used to fund projects like restoring forest, wind turbines, solar energy, research green technologies‌
Carbon neutrality Zero carbon organizations: • Google, Dell, PepsiCo, HSBC…
Zero carbon countries: • Vatican City • Bhutan
Carbon neutrality How to be come zero carbon neutral? - ???
Embodied energy The sum of the energy necessary for an entire product life-cycle: from raw materials to products, until deconstruction/decomposition.
Embodied carbon The sum of “greenhouse gas” emitted (directly or indirectly) during building materials’ life cycle.
