Junior School Years 3-6 Cabaret Concert, Thurs 6 June 7.00pm

Southwood Junior School Newsletter GRANDPARENTS MORNING Two weeks ago we had the special opportunity of sharing breakfast with our ‘mums’...yesterday, it was another special occasion, this time our annual Grandparents Morning. For our 130 guests it was a chance to compare schooling today with that of ‘the old school days’. A wonderful booklet filled with our Grandparents memories of their schooling was presented to each visitor, whilst each year level presented a special item in our morning assembly. Perhaps the highlights are always the faces of our youngest boys when they see ‘Nanna and Papa” enter their classrooms in the morning. I trust that the morning was as enjoyable for our guests as it was for our boys and us as a staff. I would ask that you please pass on my thanks to those who attended, and remind them that the assembly can be viewed by logging on to Studywiz at www.studywiz.tintern.vic.edu.au then doing the following; Click on -Junior Login; Username – grandparent, Password- southwood; Click on -Southwood Junior School Click on -Grandparents Morning Assembly 24 May 2010.

SHACKLETON PART TWO In Assembly we have continued to discuss the leadership of Ernest Shackleton. I related to the boys his principles of leadership, which include “Be a Role Model – set a personal example’. When Shackleton’s crew had to leave The Endurance and camp on an ice flow, camp on an ice flow, he would rise early and serve them Hot Chocolate. When there was only a limited supply of warm ‘reindeer skin’ sleeping bags, Shackleton took a thinner woollen bag for himself and then proceeded to put the rest of the crew in a lottery for the reindeer bags. He believed that it was important to “Take risks-Never Give Up” and this was displayed in the epic journey that he and his crew undertook. Most importantly, he believed that leaders should “Set and maintain an optimistic tone-but be realistic”. One of Shackleton's greatest strengths was his ability to build an unwavering sense of self-confidence in his men--they came to believe that they could overcome any obstacle. He never offered a position to his men other than that they would successfully get home. These qualities are important in all aspects of life, for children and adults. They are worth discussing and reinforcing with your children and family. ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO TOUR SENIOR COLLEGE Yesterday, twenty visitors took a tour of our Senior College (Years 10-12) with Geoff Connor (Head of Campus, Tintern), two of our I.B. boys and myself. We visited classrooms, spent time in the Anderson Centre and chatted with a number of Senior College boys and girls. I know that those who came on the tour found it very rewarding and informative. Next Wednesday morning, 2 June, I am again offering any interested parents the opportunity to have a 60 minute tour of our Senior College. We have a bus departing Southwood at 8.45 or you can meet us at the Senior College Reception at 9.00 am (Located down the driveway behind the pool). It would be appreciated if you could notify Debbie Quirk (dquirk@southwood.vic.edu.au) if you intend joining us for this latest tour. There will be other opportunities throughout the coming months should you be unable to attend this tour.

BOOKLOOKERS CONTINUES... Our Year 6 boys continue to spend a session a week sharing books with a ‘Book Buddy’ from our Prep-Year 2 classes, as a part of our Booklookers program. These sessions are invaluable not just because of their fun, but also because of the fine modelling of reading skills displayed by our older boys.

DINOSAUR DIGGERS Our Year 1 & 2 boys were surrounded by dinosaurs, bones and all, when they took part in a most scary and exciting incursion by the Dinosaur Diggers company. Some of their reflections are as follows; DARCY – I learnt that plant eating dinosaurs had eyes at the side of their head to watch for predators coming from behind and the meat eaters had eyes at the front. This means that we are predators! LACHLAN B–I loved finding out about how many layers of rock, dirt, sand and ash there are below us. SEB –It was really funny when Sandra pretended to be a dinosaur and poo some fossil poo! LACHLAN YOUNG – I loved the dinosaur dig in the sand. We had to find fossil including shark teeth. The best thing was that we got to keep our fossils! COBY – Sandra was so much fun, especially when she ran in and out of the classroom pretending to be a dinosaur in a stampede running away from an allosaurus! ZACH – I loved crawling inside the tyrannosaurus skull – it was HUGE and scary! LUCA – I loved seeing the dinosaur puzzle being put together. It was great to see all the bones fit together.

Year 5 and 6 Science IQ. Science iQ is a series of online competitions for teams of four students. The quizzes test student knowledge, skills, and understanding in most areas of science. Each competition consists of two rounds of 15 questions. Students have up to one hour to complete the round, and are competing against other schools for prizes. On Wednesday 19 May, a team of Year 5 students (Josh Anandaraj, Morris Gu, Will Hansen and Mitch Lacey) participated in the first round of Science iQ as part of the Horizon Program. They answered questions relating to metal compounds burning to produce bright colours, an unusual bird on the island Mauritius, the expansion of gases and more. They worked cooperatively as a team and achieved a very successful 11 correct answers. Likewise, a team of Year 6 students (Harry Davies, Jack Dowling, Rory Shepherd and Jordan Wright) completed their level of Science iQ, achieving the same score. Questions they were required to research under pressure for time included ones relating to the wave types of earthquakes, respiration, density and volume. These young men also worked perfectly together as a team, and all students are looking forward to completing the competition next week. Anthea Watkins, Science Co-ordinator

What Have The Grade 3s and 4s Been Up To ? This term the year 3 and 4 boys have been studying Explorers - with an emphasis on the early Australian Explorers. We have had a special guest speaker, Knowles Kerry, who came all the way from Tasmania to tell us about his work on Antarctica. He amazed the boys with his stories about life in such a harsh environment and entertained them with his comical stories about his work with the Adelie Penguin. Last week the boys came to school dressed as explorers and participated in a number of fun activities designed to give them an idea of life as an explorer. We started with a fitness circuit to make sure we all had the physical strength to last the expedition. For Art we did botanical drawing. We went out into the garden and chose a plant to draw – just like the explorers did when they came across a plant they had never seen before. Every explorer needs to read a map and follow directions. We all managed to find the landmarks that were set. Damper is made using flour, milk, butter and salt and is easily made by the explorers over an open fire. We had to dig for our lunch and found a good supply of water and stew left underground by previous explorers. Our meal of stew and billy tea was cooked over a trangia and tasted delicious. We even drank the billy tea – tea leaves and all! It was easy to put up our tents – much easier than trying to put them back in the tiny bag they came in. We even wrote letters home to our families to let them know we had survived. It is very hard to use a quill and ink – especially when you are left-handed. The unit has been great fun and we have all learnt so much.

YEAR 7 INFORMATION EVENING We warmly invite all interested families and friends to join with us at the CM Wood Centre, Tintern, on Tuesday 1 June, 7.309.30 pm for a Year 7 2011 Information Evening. On this occasion our Senior School Captains will speak about life in the Tintern Schools, whilst there will be presentations and information specific to Year 7 at our Southwood and Tintern campuses. Should you know of friends who may be interested in attending this evening, we would be appreciative if you could let them know about this special event.

THANK YOU JOSHUA! We congratulate Joshua Coulson (Year 6) for his initiative and efforts in organising for the sale of chocolates at our Student Entrance during last month to raise money for the Cancer Council of Victoria. Joshua, ably assisted by Hugh Dugan, Nicholas Dugan and Jordan Wright, raised a total of $371.25, a wonderful effort. Whilst our school community were great supporters of the stall, it was Joshua who raised the idea and then organised everything. It was a wonderful gesture and he deserves our respect and acknowledgement for his efforts. THE KELSON SCHOLARSHIPS Our Year 6-9 boys attended a very special assembly on Monday, where Mr Michael Kelson presented Certificates to, and we were privileged to hear play, Nicholas Elliott (Year 6) and Steven Yang (Year 8), recipients of this year’s Ilma Kelson Scholarships. Mrs Ilma Kelson was the Director of Music at Tintern Girls’ Grammar School from 1958 to 1973. During her years at Tintern Mrs Kelson developed the classroom music programme up to the Higher School Certificate level, and choral groups flourished under her leadership. She arranged many performances and touring opportunities for the choirs and involved them in many fundraising activities for a variety of charities. She always supported and encouraged young performers and endeavoured to provide them with quality performance opportunities within the school and the local community. In 1994 the school and community mourned the passing of this outstanding teacher, who had contributed so much to music education and encouraged so many young musicians. The Kelson family, represented by Mr Michael Kelson, has endowed annual scholarships to be awarded to support music education. Mrs Kelson’s energetic drive and high expectations of what young musicians can achieve continues to encourage and support Tintern Schools’ talented and dedicated musicians of the future. The Ilma Kelson Scholarships are now in their seventh year, and the Tintern Schools music community is extremely grateful. Nicholas Elliott, is the recipient of an Encouragement Scholarship. Encouragement scholarships are awarded to students learning an instrument that is considered rare or particularly desirable by the Music Department for balancing parts within our orchestras and bands. Steven Yang is the recipient of the Outstanding Performer award for 2010. This award is given to a student who has demonstrated excellence in performance as a soloist and as a dedicated member of at least one choir or instrumental ensemble. ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS There is still a very small amount of Entertainment Books available for purchase through the Southwood Parents Club. These books offer terrific savings in restaurants, entertainment and accommodation venues. Please contact Sue Jane (President, Southwood parents Club) or Debbie at Reception to purchase your copy. Tintern Junior School

Junior School Music Night You are all invited to come and listen to the Years 3-6 perform some wonderful musical items. It will be held at 7.30pm in the CM Wood on Friday 28 May.

The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today. H. Jackson Brown, Jnr. The last two weeks in the Junior School have been busy! Many events have contributed to this last fortnight being a very rewarding and wonderful learning experience for our girls. Year 6 spent last week up in Canberra on camp; Year 3 and 5 spent time taking the NAPLAN tests; Year 3 visited the Immigration Museum; Year 4 went to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX theatre and the Prep-Year 2 students celebrated Mother's Day.

Prep- Year 2 Mother’s Day Celebration

The Tintern Junior School Prep-Year 2 girls celebrated Mother’s Day in grand style on Monday 10 May. The morning began with the girls presenting some poems and gifts in the classroom and then the Mums were treated to a concert with songs, poems and some impressive public speaking skills. The icing on the cake was when the girls joined their Mums in some dancing led by our talented Mrs Wagner.

These tests supplement other reporting and assessment tasks. The NAPLAN format caters best for a certain style of learner and may not suit all our girls. Parents will receive their child’s personal NAPLAN report later this year. The report will show how their daughter performed in relation to national minimum standards for students across Australia.

National Volunteer Week 10-14 May

We have much to be thankful for when we consider the assistance we receive from so many of our parents and friends of Tintern. This help takes the form of cooking, reading, craft, maths and sporting activities, to name just a few. Thank you so much for all your support, commitment and hard work in all you do for us. A particular thank you to all the parents who recently assisted with the Mother’s Day stall. This was a highly successful event which gave much pleasure to our Junior School girls and boys, as well as the Mums who received their gifts.

Assembly this week

We had a very special visitor to Assembly this week: Reverend Neil Bach who is currently the Vicar of St Mark’s Anglican Church in Forest Hill. He spoke most interestingly to the girls about his experience and association with St Columbs Anglican Church in Hawthorn. Prior to Tintern moving out to Ringwood East, this was the church used by the Tintern community. Rev. Bach had a strong personal connection with St. Columbs, having been married there. His wife lived opposite the church for many years and Rev. Bach served as the minister of the church for almost 10 years. The morning was then completed with the girls serving their Mums school-made goodies and a well deserved cup of coffee or tea after the strenuous workout! It was a fun time for all concerned. Most importantly our Mums left the morning feeling very much loved and valued for all they do for us! Many parents have enjoyed the vodcasts of the event on Studywiz and were delighted to see their daughters performing and dancing online. A very big thank you to all the teachers involved: Mrs Kusters, Mrs Mars, Mrs Whitcher, Mrs Shearer and Mrs Wagner for their exceptional planning and organising of this event.

NAPLAN testing Years 3 and 5

Congratulations to all the girls for all their hard work in preparing for the tests and during the week of the testing. The girls conducted themselves in a very mature manner and we were proud of their level of commitment. As many of you are aware, the test results provide a window into each girl’s performance in Literacy and Numeracy. This is useful for designing teaching and learning programs in order to enhance individual student achievement.

The girls enjoyed seeing an excellent aerial photograph of the church. Rev. Bach explained that the church includes a stain glass window which was donated by Tintern as well as a plaque dedicated to some Tintern students. The church is named after St Columbs Cathedral in Northern Ireland. St Columbs was an early Christian who led missionaries from Ireland to Scotland just over 1400 years ago. This action was one of the most significant events in European Christian history, especially for the British. The history of this church community is described in Jane Carolan’s book St. Columbs Hawthorn 1883-1983, where there is no doubt a reference to Tintern. Anna Riddell Head of Tintern Junior School

Did you know? Did you know that Reverend Bach (our visitor to Assembly last week) and Mrs Wagner have something in common? They are both named after famous composers. I wonder if they are related to these famous people?

A few Year 6 reflections of their camp My favourite activities were climbing Mount Tintern with Mrs Wheaton and Mrs Collins. It was fantastic and Warrumbui had actually recreated some of the story of Easter and even had a little cave. Going inside Parliament House and getting to talk to Mike Symon which was a really great experience that i will never forget and Questacon i think we all enjoyed especially the people who went on the free fall and the Guillotine. The War Memorial was one of the most important places I have ever been to and made you think of the huge extent the soilders went to just to fight for our country. Maddie Wright My favourite activity during the Canberra Camp was Questacon because it was a hands on experience. I really enjoyed the ‘Free Fall’, the ‘Guillotine’, the ‘Track Attack’ and the ‘Air Cannon’ because they were really exciting and fun. I also loved the Spiro Graph because it was really creative and fun to watch. Questacon also had an Earthquake House that was like being in a house during a real earthquake! Claudia Thomas I LOVED Questicon it was so interactive! I loved going on the Free Fall. The war memorial was beautiful and it made me sad looking along the poppy covered wall to see how many soldiers had to die for our freedom. Canberra camp was an amazing experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. Grace Edwards My favourite thing about Canberra was everything! I loved Questacon with the Free-Fall, the War Memorial where I learnt a lot about the war, Parliament House because we got to meet Mike Symon and see Question Time in the House of Representatives, The Electoral Education centre was great because I now understand Australia’s voting system. It was great fun when we got back to Warrumbui, where we were staying and having free time. I loved everything about the camp and I will never forget it! Sarah Lloyd. I really enjoyed our time at Canberra. My favourite place was at Questacon where there were many activities to entertain us. I also liked the War Memorial and it reminded me of all the soldiers who fought in the war for their country. Free time at Warrumbui was really fun. We were permited to explore a variety of places and observe the beautiful surroundings we were so fortunate to have. A new experience for me was feeding Casey the kangaroo who visited us daily. Melbourne Immigration Museum Excursion Year 3 had a most interesting morning at the Melbourne Immigration Museum. We learnt about Cuc, who was a Vietnamese refugee. The small boat she sailed in was so crowded she could only bring one item from her home – she chose a treasured photo of her sister whom she had to leave behind in Vietnam. We heard Rebecca’s story too. She emigrated from England in the 1850’s. We also had terrific fun dressing up. We loved our scavenger hunt through the different galleries. I think our favourite was the ‘Leavings Gallery’ where we explored the ‘immigrants’ ship and learnt about the conditions under which the immigrants travelled to Australia. We enjoyed our picnic lunch at the Flagstaff Gardens where we were fortunate to enjoy some very pleasant weather. We finished our day with a play in the park.

My favourite objects at the Museum were two puppy ornaments in a 1950’s immigrants ship. I love dogs. Nicola In the ship I saw ...a hard bunk bed, a chess set, a bucket toilet, a shiny chandelier, a wooden table, Chinese checkers, metal cups, a fancy couch stuck to the wall of the boat, a cupboard with drawers, a cat playing with a rope, a spiral of cockroaches, some singing birds and some funny rats. Lara, Breeana My favourite object at the Museum was a hollowed out cow horn with a special powder inside. Neil Black a Scottish immigrant, brought it into Australia. I liked it because it was unusual. Kaitlyn My favourite object at the Museum was the Mhabad Day Dress because I liked the pretty flowers on it. Madeline

Colleen Yardley Year 3 Teacher Cuc’s Story Once in Vietnam there lived a girl named Cuc and her husband named Min. There was a war between the North and South Vietnamese. The North won the battle! The North took over the South and Cuc and Min wanted to get away from Vietnam. They escaped on a small fishing boat that was designed for rivers, with 30 other people. They pretended they were fishing because they didn’t want to get caught. A big ship found them. Eventually they were taken to Australia where they are still living. Cuc even visits the Immigration Museum. Emma, D’Arcy, Nicole, Lalana

At the Immigration Museum we heard the story of Rebecca who came from England and migrated to Australia when she was twenty. She wore some of her best clothes on the ship. After eight months somebody told her they were really close to Australia. She was very excited. When she got to Australia she screamed, “we are here”. She got a job as a maid and later got married. She really wanted to go the goldfields but she wasn’t allowed to because she was a girl. We learnt all about Rebecca from a very old letter she wrote to her Uncle. Meagan, Eliza, Zarah, Jocelyn, Julia

Debating Club Something interesting I learned at the Immigration Museum was that refugees who come to Australia have to go into a small room and answer lots of questions to make sure they will be suitable to come to our country. Ella At the Museum I lay on the bed in the immigrants’ boat from the 1800’s. I heard creaking and a baby crying. Elissa My favourite object at the Museum was Rebecca’s clothes because we got to try them on. Erin My favourite object at the Museum was Rebecca’s letter because it was at least 100 years old. Caitlin

Come along to debate big issues at the Debating Club every second Wednesday with Mrs Mars at 12:45pm in 1EM. Come along and have fun and get talking! Wednesday 2nd June, Wed 16th June.

Loud Shirt Day – 17 May

Thought for the week

On Monday 17 May Tintern Junior School came alive with a sea of rainbow colours in support of our Loud Shirt Day, raising money for Taralye. Taralye supports a number of families in our Tintern School community. It is an oral language centre for deaf children and is Victoria’s leading oral language centre, providing services to deaf and hearing-impaired children and their families. The money raised by Tintern Junior School will make a great contribution to the wonderful work carried out by Taralye.

What a world of contrasts we live in. We read in our newspapers or see on television war, disaster, pain and grief. Our politicians subject one another to character assassination and we feel betrayed by the trust that we place in their hands. Within our own families there may be personal tragedy, loss and hurt.

Thanks to the fantastic support of our Loud Shirt Day we raised $234!

This positive life force is expressed in so many ways and through so many channels. Through the commitment of members of our school community, the activities of their lives, the sharing of their gifts and talents we are enriched and sustained for positive living in God’s world. May we continue to find ways to celebrate the beauty of His world in the presence of this loving and gracious God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Peace.

Victoria McKenzie - Year 1

Thank you for your enthusiastic participation in this term’s fundraising focus. Mrs Emily Mars Acting Deputy Head of Tintern Junior School

Achievements for the Week!

In contrast it is possible to hear and see peace and reconciliation being achieved between nations and peoples. We know of the caring and humanitarian works of many organisations. We celebrate the potential for new life, there is beauty in our gardens, laughter heard in our streets. We experience the tender care of friends, family and The Tintern Schools community.

ISSUE NO 8, TUESDAY 25 MAY 2010

Southwood Middle School Newsletter There are three specific aspects of our Middle School that we are currently focussing upon for our boys. Firstly, we are currently reviewing our classroom management and discipline policy. We always want to ensure that the classroom and wider school environment is supportive, encouraging and conducive to effective teaching and learning, and therefore it is critical that all boys and teachers feel that classes are conducted in a manner that maximises enjoyment, academic progress and individual support regardless of ability. We are delighted that Michael Carr-Gregg will be continuing his relationship with us at Southwood when he leads us as a Middle School staff through a two hour session on Monday 7 June, aimed at developing effective relationships with adolescent boys. We are also ready to commence a specific leadership program for our Year 9 boys to ensure that they have the opportunity to be proactive and hands on leaders at our Southwood Campus, whilst also understanding that leadership demands responsibility. More information about this program will be shared in our next newsletter. We are continually working with Tintern Schools Heads Of Department to ensure that our curriculum is consistent with that of Tintern’s with regard to standards and approaches, whilst also acknowledging that younger boys generally require a different style of teaching, but by no means academically inferior expectations! In this and following newsletters, we will be highlighting one curriculum area and sharing how this is being tackled at Southwood. As always, please conatct me should you have any feedback regarding your son and/or our school. Kindest regards Adam Kenny akenny@southwood.vic.edu.au SCIENCE AT SOUTHWOOD By Anthea Watkins, Southwood Science co-ordinator This term has been enormously exciting and eventful in the Southwood Science Department. We believe our young men learn best in an engaging, hands-on, positive setting, with many experiments and practical activities to underpin and reinforce science theory. Year 7 students have had a solid foundation laid for further scientific knowledge, and have now commenced the more “meaty” science topic of Separating Mixtures. They will be designing their own experiment to separate mixtures, using scientific principles covered in class. Science Talent Search Projects have been submitted, with entries as diverse as a model of the lung, fruit-operated clocks, how the temperature of a tennis ball affects its bounce, a scale model to demonstrate the transfer of energy, and how strong is a balloon. It is rewarding to see scientific principles being applied in such distinct and various projects. Year 8 students have been studying Atoms and learning about elements. This unit has required the students to design their own experiments and gain knowledge of different types of chemical reactions. They have submitted their Environmental Awards projects and the department has been swamped by beautifully crafted bird boxes, bird feeders and bird baths. The boys have also selected to do various other tasks such as making shopping bags made of recycled material, monitoring household wastes, ceasing the use of Glad Wrap, planting native gardens and describing a nature trail. We are about to begin Geology, where students will make their own crystals and rocks, do froth flotation experiments and complete a Mineral Wealth project.

ISSUE NO 8, TUESDAY 25 MAY 2010

SCIENCE AT SOUTHWOOD (cont.) Acids, Bases and Chemical Reactions have kept Year 9 students busy with chemical experiments since the Forensics unit ended. These boys are doing a series of neutralisation experiments, and will choose to research either acids in the body, in the environment or in foods as part of their assessment for this unit. The final topic for the term is Bridge Building – students learn about and build various types of bridges, then take their bridge for a bridgetesting competition with Tintern girls. Overall a very busy, hands-on term! Year 7 Science iQ. On Wednesday 19 May, Jesse Papadopoulos, Nick Walton, Dennis Wang and Daniel Woods were invited by the Horizon Program to compete in Round 1 of the Science iQ competiton. This on-line quiz tests student knowledge, skills and understanding in most areas of science. These boys were required to work co-operatively to solve 15 multiple choice questions within 1 hour. They were confronted with questions from food chains to Gas Giants, and from the diet of the Gilgie to metallurgists and Penicillin. The teamwork I witnessed as they worked through the questions is the best I have observed in a quiz of this kind, and these boys are to be congratulated. Their score was 12.5, and we are looking forward to next week’s final round with much anticipation. Well done boys! Anthea Watkins Year 9 “Enterprise and the Future” Excursion The Year 9 enterprise class recently visited the Marvel Bookbinding and Printfinishing premises in Heidelberg. The business is owned and operated by Wayne Eastaugh, a Tintern Schools parent. The boys were welcomed in the board room by Wayne and his son, Richie, an ex-Southwood student. We learnt about the history of the business and the development of the business from its beginnings in the 1980s with 4 staff, to today’s operation employing approximately 80 people. The tour took us through the offices where the importance of effective record keeping systems was explained, then onto the factory floor where the printing and binding machinery were in full operation. It was interesting to note the various functions performed by the different machines, from “licking and sticking” for reply paid envelopes to inserting folds into promotional folders. Overall the excursion was a great success; our thanks to the management and staff at Marvel Bookbinding. Matt O’Brien YEAR 7 INFORMATION EVENING We warmly invite all interested families and friends to join with us at the CM Wood Centre, Tintern, on Tuesday 1 June, 7.309.30 pm for a Year 7 2011 Information Evening. On this occasion our Senior School Captains will speak about life in the Tintern Schools, whilst there will be presentations and information specific to Year 7 at our Southwood and Tintern campuses. Should you know of friends who may be interested in attending this evening, we would be appreciative if you could let them know about this special event.

ISSUE NO 8, TUESDAY 25 MAY 2010

Last Friday the 21.May 2010 the Year 7 and some Year 8 boys went on a German excursion to the Cuckoo restaurant in Mt. Dandenong. The Cuckoo was a ‘fantastische’ experience! As you walked in a wave of heat flushed out of the door and the smells that flooded your nose were simply amazing! You could already taste the Schnitzel, Wurst and Schokoladenkuchen. The huge buffet was simply lecker !!! Outstanding!! The German waitresses need a mention as they were wirklich (really) very friendly! The entertainment was also amazing, Franz was on the Accordion and we loved the way how Wolfgang included the audience in every song. Josh and Akshay did extremely well in the Glockenspiel (bells) and Liam won a Lebkuchenherz (gingerbread heart) in the Bavarian Limbo??? Prima, a lot of Spass was had by all including the teachers and Mr. O’Brien showed off some very cool dance moves in the Nutbush! We wish we could go back to do the Slap Dance next time . Auf Wiedersehen! By Alfred Kouris & Hamish McMillan with input of all year 7s

L’amour est Bizarre The year 8 French class from Southwood went across to Tintern last week to watch the play ‘L’amour est Bizarre,’ performed by two actors that both performed many different roles. Andrew D: “I really enjoy plays and this French one was no exception, the mix of French and English works really well together and had a good storyline and a hilarious ending.” Alex B:” A brilliant mix of French culture and music brought to you by two fantastic actors.” Kieran S: “Il était très intéressant avec une bonne intriguée lui donne un à huit des dix.” Yang S: “The actors were realistic and the songs were great!” Kevin T: “The actors were very convincing in the different personas.” Harry G: “It had a smart way of making the French funny and easy to understand.” Josh M: “I thought that the play was a very good example of the French language and both the characters did a fantastic job. Ryan T: “The play was a very, very, very good one. I liked the way the two actors acted out a whole range of characters and how they spoke two languages, English and French so we could understand and know what the storyline clearly. C'est Magnifique! Stanley M: “Altogether the play was a great success. Both the actors really acted out their characters, interacted with the audience very well and they made good use of costumes to act out 5or 6 different roles.

FUNDRAISER FOR THE STARLIGHT FOUNDATION This year the Southwood Leadership Team has endeavoured to raise awareness of issues beyond ourselves and our school throughout the school. This term we have chosen to raise funds for a worthy organisation, the Starlight Foundation Australia. This organisation supports seriously ill children and their families, improving their circumstances, first and foremost. The Starlight Children’s Foundation is a not for profit organisation dedicated to improving the quality of life for children with chronic and lifethreatening medical conditions. Southwood will be holding a fundraising event on Friday June 25 to help fund this charitable organisation. The boys are permitted to wear free dress, a gold coin donation mandatory. A ‘pizza and can’ lunch will also be available. Boys will need to fill in an order form to be handed out to boys by year level coordinators over the next week. Prices are as follows: Pizza $2.00 a slice Cans (Pepsi Max/Lemonade) $2.00 a can We hope to see all students actively involved in this fundraising event. Nicholas Shying, Southwood Leadership Team

ISSUE NO 8, TUESDAY 25 MAY 2010

The Friends of Music Jazz Night Last Saturday Night, approximately 350 guests joined together in the CM Wood Centre for the Friends of Music Jazz Night. It was an absolutely wonderful evening, full of energy, class and fun! I would like to sincerely thank the organizers, the Friends of Music, wonderfully led by Mrs Keng McDonald ‐ along with our outstanding music staff and, of course, our wonderfully talented Tintern Schools’ Music students for creating a most enjoyable evening. It was terrific to see so many of our older Southwood boys and families involved in the evening. Special mention must be made to John McLaughlan for his solo, and Matt Smoorenburg for his dancing with our Principal Mrs Collins. MATHS FAMILY PROBLEM For the last problem , b = 3. Since no repetitions of numbers occurs, b must be either 3,6,7,8 or 9.Likewise e must have the same possibilities. But from the addition, b + 5 = e or b + 5 = 10 + e (ie carry ten to the next column) So either b = 3 and e = 8 or b = 8 and e = 3. The first choice 643 + 275 = 918 is true; the second choice 748 + 265 = 913 is false so b = 3. Try to figure out the solution to the following problem. E-mail your solution to Mr G Collins gcollins@southwood.vic.edu.au Correct entries will receive a prize.

a 4 b + 2 c 5 d 1 e

PROBLEM: If a farmer uses a large tractor, he can plow a field in eight hours. His son, using a smaller tractor, can plow the same field in twelve hours. How many hours and minutes would it take to plow the field if they worked together?

SCHOOLS

Tintern Secondary School Newsletter From the Head of Campus Mr Geoff Connor

Dear Parents and Friends of the Tintern Community, The Friends of Music Jazz Night By the end of this week we will have had a fortnight full of many celebrations of the outstanding Music programs and musical talent that is fostered at Tintern Schools. Last Saturday Night, Mrs Maria Connor and I were among approximately 350 guests in the CM Wood Centre enjoying one of Tintern Schools’ annual highlights ‐ the Friends of Music Jazz Night. I would again like to pay tribute to our superb parent organizers, the Friends of Music ‐ so ably led by Mrs Keng McDowell ‐ along with our outstanding music staff and, of course, our wonderfully talented Tintern Schools’ Music students for creating a most enjoyable evening. We were fortunate to welcome back Mr Ron Trigg, a much admired and respected former Tintern Schools Music staff member, with his Jazz Band. Ron was delighted to be able to present the annual Ron Trigg Jazz Award to James Cooper, a Year 12 IB student, and a well‐deserved and popular choice. Those parents, friends and students who were lucky enough to attend were treated to a night full of fabulous entertainment and the chance to get up and dance to the music provided by a wide variety of our student musicians as well by Ron Trigg’s own Jazz Band. The Ilma Kelson Scholarships and The Penelope Thwaites Scholarships Assembly On Monday 24 May we were delighted to welcome Mr Michael Kelson back to Tintern Schools at a special secondary school Assembly held to present the annual Ilma Kelson Music Scholarships. These are awarded in honour of his mother, Mrs Ilma Kelson, who was the Director of Music at Tintern from 1958 to 1973. During her leadership the School’s classroom Music program and Choral groups flourished. In her honour the Kelson family annually provides five encouragement scholarships to support the tuition of students in the pursuit of their music education. These awards are now in their seventh year. This year Mr Kelson has bestowed an additional five scholarships to Tintern Schools’ music students in honour of one of his mother’s music students whilst at Tintern, Ms Penelope Thwaites. Ms Thwaites attended Tintern from 1953 to 1960 and was School Pianist from 1958 to 1960. She was Captain of Somner House in 1960. After leaving Tintern, Ms Thwaites composed the music for our School Psalm in honour of the completion of 25 years of service as Headmistress of Tintern by Miss Ph: 9845 7850 Head of Campus Absentee Line: 9845 7722 Email: Tinternhoc@tintern.vic.edu.au

Constance Wood. The School Psalm was first performed at our annual St Paul’s Cathedral Service in 1964 and remains our School Psalm to this day. Ms Thwaites is a world renowned concert pianist who has performed all over the world and, as many members of the School Community will remember, we were fortunate enough to have her visit us and perform for us last year. This is the inaugural year of the Penelope Thwaites Scholarships, and this additional support of music in Tintern Schools by the Kelson family is greatly appreciated. During the Assembly, the School and invited guests were treated to performances by a number of this year’s award winners. The Award Recipients for 2010 are: THE ILMA KELSON SCHOLARSHIPS Outstanding Performer: Steven Yang (Violin) Music Captain (Female): Natasha Paige (Violin) Encouragement Awards: Tasha Lademann (Oboe) Sarah Pemberton (Bassoon) Nicholas Elliott (Trumpet) THE PENELOPE THWAITES MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS: Outstanding Junior School Performer: Alison Yang (Violin) School Pianist: Ellen Falconer (Piano) Choral Captain: Charlotte Black (Voice) Australian Composition: Sarah Lerpiniere (Violin) Original Composition: Emily McKelvie (composition for Quintet) In addressing the School and invited guests, Mr Kelson expressed his continued appreciation of the vast music talent that exists and is fostered at Tintern Schools. He also reminded the School of how fortunate our students are to be in such a wonderful and enriching environment as Tintern Schools ‐ one of Victoria’s most outstanding schools. Two further special Music Events

This week I am looking forward to attending two further wonderful Music events: the Small Ensembles Concert on Thursday 27 May and the Junior School Music Night on Friday 28 May. As always I know these two evenings will be celebrations of the true enjoyment of Music at Tintern Schools. For those who have not previously had the chance to attend The Small Ensembles Concert, I can assure you that it will be an evening of high quality Music entertainment featuring very talented secondary students across Tintern Schools. I can safely predict that The Junior School Music Night will similarly be an evening where the standard of the performances will be outstanding and a real credit to the efforts and talents of our Junior School girls as well as to their dedicated teaching staff, both Music and pastoral.

Examinations and Semester Reports In the next fortnight our Senior College students will be undertaking examinations. In my two previous newsletters I have included a section on Study Hints. In the interest of not wanting to push too much of a good thing, I will refer interested students to these newsletters and to their Senior College handbook. But on behalf of all members of the community I will instead wish all students successful studying for their upcoming exams and for examinations that ask them exactly the right questions. I am sure our Years 10 and 11 students will not need reminding that they have a Study Day on Friday 4 June. Whilst our Year 12 students will have a study day on Monday 7 June, prior to the mid‐year VCE Unit 3 examinations in Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology and the GAT assessments. Letters have gone home informing all Years 10, 11 and 12 parents/ guardians of the examination timetables, of relevant study days and of appropriate examination rules. The mention of examinations will of course lead to thoughts of Semester reports. I would like to advise all parents/ guardians and students that our teaching staff have commenced their Semester subject reports which will be posted to all families during the first week of our Term Two holidays. Year 7 Information Evening – Tuesday 1 June In closing, I would like to refer all parents and guardians to a special evening that is being held on Tuesday 1 June – a Year 7 Information Evening for Tintern Schools. This evening is relevant to all families who have children who will be in Year 7 in the next few years and I would encourage those families with friends, relatives or neighbours who have children of an appropriate age that they are welcome to attend this information session. A flyer advertising this event is attached to the newsletter and invites everyone who wants to hear about the Year 7 at our two campuses to come along. We will have staff and students present to talk about our wonderful Year 7 programs. Seat Belts on Buses – Must Be Worn! Finally, I would like to advise the parents and guardians of all Tintern Schools students who travel by bus to and from the School that I have recently had reports that many students are not wearing the seat belts provided in their buses for their safety. Wearing of seat belts is a legal requirement and I have asked the bus companies to remind their drivers that students must be wearing seat belts at all times during their journey. I would also ask parents/guardians to remind their daughter(s) and/or son(s) about the obvious need to wear seat belts when travelling. The school pays an additional cost to each company to have seat belt fitted buses provided and this is done with good reason – to protect the safety of your children. Please support us in emphasising this safety measure.

With kind regards to all members of the School community, Geoff Connor Head of Campus –Tintern

Chaplain’s Corner What a world of contrasts we live in. We read in our newspapers or see on television war, disaster, pain and grief. Our politicians subject one another to character assassination and we feel betrayed by the trust that we place in their hands. Within our own families there may be personal tragedy, loss and hurt. In contrast it is possible to hear and see peace and reconciliation being achieved between nations and peoples. We know of the caring and humanitarian works of many organisations. We celebrate the potential for new life; there is beauty in our gardens, laughter heard in our streets. We experience the tender care of friends, family and The Tintern Schools community. Peace Fr Stewart Taplin + + +

Music News Senior musicians share morning tea and music with aged in our community Seven senior music students were invited to perform at the Olivet Aged Care Nursing Home on Tuesday 18 May. The residents at the Home were enjoying a “Biggest Morning Tea” event, raising funds for Cancer Research, and welcomed the performers into their dining hall to share scones, jam and cream and some music making. Pictured outside the nursing home are (seated) Natasha Paige, Charlotte Black, Emily McKelvie, Hilary Watts and (standing) Mrs Barbara Clementson (Head of Keyboard), Daniel Owen, Ellen Falconer and Adam Sergeant. These VCE and IB Music students are to be commended for sharing their time and talents with aging members of our community. Tintern Schools Celtic Fiddle Club strikes a chord Members of the Tintern Schools Celtic Fiddle Club and the Colebrook String Quartet were recently invited to perform at a concert given by Treble Tones Ladies’ Choir which took place on Sunday 23 May at Burwood Uniting Church. These ensembles were accompanied on this outing by Mrs Fiona Pople, Tintern’s Head of Strings in the Music Department. While we know of the Quartet’s recent successes, the Celtic Fiddle Club is, perhaps, a lesser known ensemble. This group has performed several times at Tintern and Southwood, but this was the ensemble’s first performance outside the school. The girls played two sets of pieces, and the energetic, ‘toe‐tapping’ style of music was greatly appreciated by choir and audience alike. The Director of Treble Tones Choir described both ensembles as a “very talented and disciplined group of mu‐ sicians who are a credit to Tintern Schools”. Well done, girls! Small Ensembles Concert this Thursday 27 May If you would like an opportunity to hear performances by the Celtic Fiddles, the Colebrook String Quartet or one of our many other small music ensembles, please come along to our Annual Small Ensembles Concert in the CM Wood Centre this Thursday 27 May at 7.30pm. The concert is free and will include the following ensembles on the program (in addition to the two mentioned above): Hillier Flute Ensemble, Flute Trio, Brass Ensemble, Improvisation Group, Southwood Guitar Ensemble, Tintern Senior Guitar Ensemble, Piano Duet Club, Clarinet Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Jazz Combo and a memorable Cello Quartet!
