About 20 years ago, two families who didn’t know each other, but were following the same dream, somehow came together. Rob, who was from England, and Thomas who was from Germany were both searching for a more sustainable way of living, and through that search, they happened upon each other.

Thomas, Rob and their families were looking for enough land to begin an eco-community development of about 20 houses. They put their efforts together and were able to buy the Hollies Farm, that was located about one hour west of Cork, at Castletown Kinneagh, Enniskeane, Ireland.

Besides being a sustainable community, The Hollies is also a charitable learning centre for sustainable living skills, where individuals can go to learn about organic farming, foraging, alternative land management, timber framing and the art of building with cob. Participants for the classes can camp in tents at the farm itself, but there are also lots of charming B&Bs nearby. Cork is a major city and only about an hour from the farm as another possible place of accommodation. Cork has lots of history, boutiques and music for you to enjoy as you learn about living in a more organic way. The Hollies Centre is able to offer courses for up to 10 people at a time. So with smaller class sizes, the classes will be filling up more quickly.

One particularly interesting course is ‘Introduction to Cob’. It’s an organic method of building, and although there are many extremely large buildings constructed of cob, most of them tend to be smaller because of the labour intensive process of making the cob and applying it. However, when the process is complete, the owner will have a home that can last for centuries, as many of the beautiful homes along the Devon coastline will attest. Cob also opens up a wide berth for creativity as is seen in the photos on these pages. It can be coloured and formed into any shape. Nooks can be created for practicality and decoration, and designs can literally be traced into the walls. The thick walls made of natural materials ‘breathe’ and are naturally cool in the summer, while staying warm and snug in the winter. The cob can be used outdoors as well, for building a baking oven that will keep the heat separate from the house in the hot summer months. You can view an entire list of all the courses offered at the website at www.thehollies.ie Besides learning the valuable skills of sustainable living, it’s an opportunity to connect with likeminded individuals who are hoping to build a better life that’s kinder to the planet.

1. A permanent place of residence. As anyone who’s ever moved their place of residence can tell you, moving house is a time of uncertainty and major stress. Wouldn’t it be great to never have to move again, unless it was your choice? -To never have to face that time of confusion, trying to figure out where you will go next? -And that uneasy feeling after signing the lease when you wonder if you picked the right flat or chose the right neighbourhood? These major upheavals when you change your place of residence are a huge source of stress, and inevitably lead to at least a short period of feeling a little lost. It’s part of what makes home ownership so attractive. You never have to worry about someone raising your rent or keeping your expensive deposit. If you own your home or have a really low mortgage payment, you can sail through rough financial times feeling more secure with a bit more control over your destiny.

A house truly becomes a ‘home’ when all the walls are painted your favourite shade, the plug-ins are in just the right spot, your familiar pictures are on the wall, and your favourite jeans are in the cupboard you designed. A customised home is truly yours in every way. Tiny Eco Homes UK is not just building affordable houses, they’re creating homes – homes that are specially designed for the way that you want to live. You can choose to incorporate solar and wind power options for an economical source of energy, and a greener future for our planet. And if you need financing, they can help you to get the affordable loan you need. With prices starting at just £26,000, your mortgage may actually be less than the rent you’re paying now. For the Bees… and for us

In other areas of the country, garden clubs and botanical societies have taken up the cause of planting wildflowers. They’re playing a vital role in helping to expand the wild meadows of Great Britain.

You may have noticed wildflowers blanketing the verges these days, especially if you live in Bristol, Rotherham, Birmingham, New Castle or Sheffield. This cheerful site is because the wildflowers are far less maintenance and expense than keeping the verges mowed. It also has the added bonus of providing little meadows for birds, insects and bees which are vital for pollination and food production.

13

Individuals are also planting in their private gardens. If you’d like to help, but don’t have a lot of space, consider volunteering with your local garden club or botanical society to help them plant. Also, remember you don’t have to have a lot of space to grow them. A space of 1 metre square is enough to plant a small patch of wildflowers, and they also grow well in pots for those who live in flats and have no access to a garden. They can be planted in the spring, and also in September. So, talk to your local nursery for expert advice on your area and the different varieties that grow well!
