Porsche Web Cinema Porsche have been providing downloadable pictures, sound samples and movies on their corporate website for some time. Now they have added an online cinema. It’s only available on the German site, but easy enough to use whether you speak the lingo or not. Point your web browser at www.porsche.com/germany/ multimedia/webcinema/ and click the ‘eintreten’ link to enter. The cinema has videos featuring all of the current Porsche model ranges and a selection of motorsport clips from the present and the past. You can view them fullscreen (some are better quality than others) and store favourites to make up your own customised ‘TV channel’.
TIPEC members get married! That’s eight TIPEC member Porsches lined up in a row at the wedding of Alan and Gina Purcell, both members of the TIPEC South Central region. They married on Friday 21st September, and were kind enought to invite a host of members and their cars along for the day. Al’s Boxster S and Gina’s 964 amongst them! A great day was had by all. The two presenters had a laugh and a joke about Jason having a 928 bought by his girlfriend when he was fourteen years old, with Penny was asking how come he had a girlfriend at fourteen … if you caught the show, you’ll know what I mean!” The show was broadcast by ITV2 on Wednesday 29th August and has already been repeated twice. A lovely fast car, with M030 suspension, superb brakes and sweet engine, all dressed up in a great muscular shape and crazy pink interior! “The local section of the French Club 944 forum was very active and I quickly made a lot of great friends with cars from 924 to 968 and even 928s. We remain friends today, despite me no longer owning my Porsche, and to me this represents the best aspect of 944 ownership; in fact some cars on the poster are specifically those owned by my friends.

Refurbishing an old car can be a confusing, daunting and lengthy

With no end of help from Alan Neilson, I got the stripping down done in good time. The body was taken down to bare metal in key areas. Bad metal was repaired, including replacement of a whole front wing.

Detailing your car Final touches: Interior & engine bay With the outside of your Porsche now gleaming for everyone else’s benefit, perhaps we’d better look at the bit you see the most: the interior

Once you’ve chucked out all the obvious debris and given the car, including boot, spare wheel well and engine bay, a good hoover, it’s down to a lot of fiddling about to be frank. Carpets do benefit from properly fitting mats, which won’t set you back more than £100, but they need to be properly beaten and wet vacced (if you have such a machine), and grit does damage the backs of your shoes anyway. The fixed carpets can be cleaned with a wash mitt and car shampoo, dried off with a towel and any troublesome spots dealt with using a purpose made fabric cleaner and lightly brushed. The same treatment for fabric seats too: spray a little fabric cleaner onto your cloth, not the seat directly. Leather seats are of course prone to discolouration from clothing and wear on the bolsters. You’ll need a specialist leather cleaner and conditioner, in two separate products. Application is dead simple. Try to get the leather warm as this seems to help them give up dirt better, apply cleaner with a cloth, working lightly. Where dirt is ingrained use a soft leather brush to agitate, leave it on the leather for a couple of minutes and then, using a clean microfibre cloth, wipe off the residue. Repeat if required. In applying conditioner, which returns softness and suppleness to seats, again warm leather where possible, application again via a sponge, wipe lightly ensuring total coverage. Don’t rub too hard but enough to help it to start soaking in, leave for 10–15 minutes and buff off with clean microfibre cloth. After another 30 minutes repeat buff and you are all done. Repeat monthly.

964 Damper upgrade
Never one to give up, I decided to source yet another pair of front donor struts and quickly won a good pair on eBay for £10.50. That will do nicely! Surprisingly, fitment of the front KONI inserts proved to be quite straightforward, cutting 15mm down from the top (KONI instructions say 25mm) of the donor strut with a hacksaw, the old damper workings were removed and a new fixing hole drilled in the strut base.

I recalled an article by Streacher about 964s which contained a recommend KONI dampers to compliment Eibach lowering springs. Searching through the usual

Looking forward to looking backwards
Nothing to brag about, I know, but I am old enough to remember driving my Morris Minor to Aintree in 1955 for the British Grand Prix and watching Stirling Moss, now Sir Stirling, pull an extraordinary move out of his versatility bag, beating Juan Manuel Fangio to the chequered flag by one tenth of a second. They were both driving identical MercedesBenz W 196s. Fast forward fifty-odd years and I remain a hopeless case; that GP baptism in 1955 the start of a love affair with motor sport that is as passionate today as when I was a lean bellied 20-year old. Bear with me for a moment, for there is a connection that I want to share. Over those several decades I have watched motor racing, especially Formula One, move from the heartstopping excitement and danger of the fifties and sixties to the fast food variety we seem to have had thrust upon us in recent times. Races now are won with computers, robots, and budgets of millions. Ask yourself, when did you last see a Grand Prix driver at work? I mean really, physically, hard at work? You know he’s in there somewhere, tucked away in his high-tech carbon fibre composite cocoon, but can you actually see him; witness his body language and watch his arms move? No way, JosÊ.
