AMETEK SPECIALTY METAL PRODUCTS SEES RISE IN DEMAND FOR HIGH PURITY NICKEL STRIP FOR BATTERY APPLICATIONS ACROSS MULTIPLE SECTORS
Wallingford, CT, USA (Sept.
8, 2020) – Specialty metal strip and wire manufacturer, AMETEK Specialty Metal Products (SMP), is not letting the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic affect its operations. The business is reporting increased levels of global demand for its high purity nickel strip products across a number of sectors. AMETEK SMP’s precision nickel strip is engineered for critical battery connector applications in the electronics, medical, electric vehicles, defense, aerospace, and oil and gas markets. Customers have reported high levels of satisfaction with the pure nickel strip, thanks to its excellent electrical conductivity. SMP uses wrought powder metallurgy to custom-make the strip, achieving a 99.98 percent purity, which delivers 15-20% higher conductivity than traditional cast strip materials and therefore greater power transmission in batteries. The business presented its high purity nickel strip products at the recent International Battery Seminar and Exhibition, held a few weeks ago on a virtual platform
for the first time in the event’s history. AMETEK SMP Wallingford engineers joined fellow exhibitors, interacting with customers, decisionmakers, and industry experts through live-chat, scheduled events, and on-demand downloads. Matthew Lappen, Sales & Marketing Director for Strip Products at AMETEK SMP says, “We are thrilled with the interest that our high purity nickel strip products have received from customers across the world. Despite the interruptions caused by COVID-19, we are encouraged by the demand and are proud of our teams for rising to the challenge to fulfil customers’ expectations. Our purity increases conductivity by 15% and power is carried to the battery via a smaller, thinner strip, which saves costs without compromising on performance.” Along with nickel strip, AMETEK SMP Wallingford also manufactures a range of high-tolerance custom shaped wire products, shaped components, and thermal management materials. Products can be customized and are used in multiple specialist applications across the world.

CENTRO-METALCUT TO BUILD NEW TRAVELING TRACK GRINDER FOR OHIO STEEL PRODUCER
Machesney Park, Illinois (August
24, 2020) – Centro-Metalcut, a USA based leading manufacturer of abrasive saws and conditioning grinders for the steel industry, has recently secured an order to design and build a new Track Grinder, also known as a traveling grinder. This is the second machine order from this steel producer in 2 years; the first was built in 2019. The Track Grinder, currently in production in Centro-Metalcuts’ facility near Rockford, IL features a 250HP main grinding motor at a 45-degree orientation to the material being processed, which is mounted on a rugged platform that traverses on heavy-duty rails along the material. The Track Grinder operates at speeds up to 100 feet per minute, with quick reversal speeds. Industry leading control technology compliment the complete system for superior surface finishes. Included with the grinder system is an inline slab turning system for maximized grinding efficiency. To complete the grinding system a 15,000 CFM high efficiency cartridge dust collector with HEPA filtration is being supplied. “Centro-Metalcut prides ourselves on the relationships we build with our Fairfield, OH – Rolled Alloys announces expanded processing capabilities with the investment in a Trumpf TruLaser 3030 CO2 laser machine. This laser is equipped with a 3200KW resonator and can cut nickel alloys up to 0.1875” thick. This machine further adds to our wide range of cutting capabilities for stainless, nickel, cobalt, and titanium products including multiple lasers, water jet, shearing, precision coil leveling, inspection, deburr, and finishing equipment. This laser builds on our commitment to provide ample capacity and the best efficiencies to our customers. Features of this machine include 60”x120”
