GENDER MATTERS Truths and Consequences Sarah M. Pitcher This anthology employs an intersectional feminist approach to introduce students to the various ways feminist thinkers discuss gender, sexuality, sex, and more. The text encourages readers to challenge the “truth” of genderrelated definitions, the ways in which people play into these truths, and the consequences of passively accepting them. Gender Matters is ideal for classes in gender studies, sociology, and gender issues. Sarah M. Pitcher earned both her master’s degree and her Ph.D. in sociology at Syracuse University in New York. A professor of sociology at City College in San Diego, Dr. Pitcher regularly teaches classes in introductory sociology, gender studies, social problems, sociological theory, and globalization and social change, with the understanding that sociology begins and ends with experience.

A GENDERED GAZE Media Impacts on Perceptions of Self and Sexuality Suzanne Regan This text explores the influence of media on audiences’ conception of gender and sexuality. The text is organized into five chapters which address subjects such as identity, cultural representation, whiteness and the othering of ethnic minorities, the construction of narrative and character, representation of sex and gender, and the contemporary culture exchange. Suzanne Regan earned her Ph.D. in mass communication at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and her M.A. in film studies from University of California, Los Angeles. She has been involved with mass communication and visual media for over forty years and is currently a professor in the Department of Television, Film, and Media at California State University, Los Angeles.

Intersections of Generation, Race, Sex, Culture, and Gender Felecia Carter Harris Adroitly combining original commentary and outstanding reading selections, this book explores the impact of gender, sexual, racial, cultural, and generational differences, especially as they impact the millennial generation. The material centers on understanding and valuing difference from both personal and global perspectives. It also examines significant historical and current events, trends, processes, and individual and organizational complexities that are inherent in any discussion of differences. Felecia Carter Harris earned her Ed.D. in higher education and interdisciplinary studies at North Carolina State University. Dr. Harris teaches women’s and gender studies at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.

GENDER, SEX, AND SOCIETY Biological Considerations, Social Constructions, Identity, and the Body Orvic Ralph Pada This text combines peer-reviewed journal articles and original work to create a foundational theoretical framework for exploring concepts and issues of gender, sexuality, and society. The readings in the first unit highlight key conceptual questions about how society defines and forms normative regulations for gender. In the second unit the selections focus on the roots of gender ideologies, historical trends, and patterns that temper genderbinary norms and practices. The third unit features selections that encourage readers to analyze social institutions and the role they play in socializing, tempering, and interpolating people into gender binaries. Orvic Ralph Pada earned an M.A. in sociology at California State University, Fullerton and an additional M.A. in intercultural studies at Simpson University in Redding, California.

UNDERSTANDING GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN POPULAR CULTURE Jennifer Maher This book introduces readers to pivotal film and media theory and explores gender and sexuality as contextual, rather than fixed. It focuses on how what is considered to be a biological given is also shaped by particular cultures at particular times, and how this is then reflected in popular culture. The chapters address topics such as masculinity and looking, femininity, domesticity, and television, pornography and representation, and the romance novel as “pornography� for women. Students will also consider queer representations in Hollywood, slasher films, and the growing genre of fan fiction. Jennifer Maher holds a Ph.D. in English and modern studies from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. She is a senior lecturer in the Department of Gender Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington.

THE RELATIONSHIP TRAJECTORY Readings on Courtship and Marriage Jacob Jantzer This reader uses primary source texts to engage students and encourage insight into dating, sexuality, marriage, parenting, and divorce as experienced by people from a broad range of cultural backgrounds. Topics include partner selection for African American single mothers, the decision to marry, changes resulting from the legalization of same-sex marriage, interracial marriage, difficulties maintaining marriage for military couples, and the stressors that most typically impact those in partnered relationships. Jacob Jantzer, who holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, is an assistant professor at South Dakota State University. He is a research team leader for students who use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to explore relationships between cultural identities and bullying victimization.

The selected readings explore how these movements prompted social changes and highlight the outcomes of those changes. Readers will learn about the use, evolution, and significance of conventional narrative and formulaic plot structure. Through popular culture artifacts, they will explore how assumptions based on gender-related traits and abilities generate expectations. Mark Howell holds a Ph.D. in American culture studies from Bowling Green University. Dr. Howell is a professor of communication at Northwestern Michigan College, where he teaches English composition and American culture.

QUEER IN AZTLÁN

Chicano Male Recollections of Consciousness and Coming Out Adelaida R. Del Castillo and Gibrán Güido This anthology gives readers the opportunity to experience deeply personal narratives from queer Chicanos/Mexicanos. A finalist for a 2014 Lambda Award, the book explores issues of queer youth identity, sexuality, masculinity, homophobia, sexism, and violence in Mexican and American culture, presents a complex view of queer Chicanos/Mexicanos, and contests dominant sexual norms. Adelaida R. Del Castillo is an associate professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at San Diego State University. Gibrán Güido is a doctoral student at the University of California, San Diego. In 2010 he organized the 5th Annual Queer People of Color Conference at San Diego State University, and co-organized the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies 3rd Jotería Conference.

LGBTQ PEOPLE & ISSUES An Integrative Approach Cabell Gathman This book shows how LGBTQ identities are inevitably connected to other socially inescapable “master status” identities including race, class, and ability. It focuses on multiple layers of identity and marginalization— LGBTQ people’s race, gender, class, sexual orientation, and other aspects of humanness—simultaneously, and stresses that sexual orientation and gender identity cannot and should not be separated from these. It can be used in courses on LGBTQ issues, courses dealing with human sexuality, and courses with a broad focus on social inequality. Cabell Gathman holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she has taught in the Department of Sociology and the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies. Benjamin Bateman received his Ph.D. in English from The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. He is currently Assistant Professor of English and Director of the Center for the Study of Genders and Sexualities in the College of Arts and Letters at California State University, Los Angeles. His areas of expertise include queer studies, popular culture, literary theory, and modern and contemporary British and American fiction.
