Historia de Arroyo ORIGEN DEL NOMBRE DE ARROYO Se cuentan cuatro versiones acerca del origen de nuestro pueblo. Veamos: 1. Algunas personas opinan que Arroyo comenzó como un caserío indio en el lugar que hoy recibe el nombre de barrio Pitahaya. Aquí se encontraron caracoles y piedras laboradas por los indios. 2. Otros señalan que varias personas de negocio procedentes de Guayama, estaban buscando un buen puerto para recibir y traer mercancías. Por esta razón, se cree que ellos brindaron muchas facilidades a ciertas personas para que vinieran a vivir en el lugar conocido la Playa. 3. Otros cuentan que varios pescadores de El Bajo de Patillas se mudaron para la playa de Cangrejos por la abundancia de peces en el lugar. Allí construyeron ranchos y bohíos a poca distancia del mar. 4. Una cuarta versión sostiene que en el sitio donde se encuentran las ruinas de la Iglesia Vieja es el lugar de origen de la fundación de Arroyo. Algunas personas cuentan que cerca del lugar donde se construyó lo que hoy conocemos como la Iglesia Vieja, había un pequeño puente de madera conocido como Boquita de Arroyo. Debajo de ese puente pasaba un arroyuelo, donde las personas que viajaban se paraban a descansar. En este lugar tomaban agua dulce ya que las otras aguas cercanas eran salobres. Así, el sitio cobró fama por su agua. Por uso y costumbre se le llamó al lugar “El Arroyo”. Por eso decimos que el nombre de nuestro querido pueblo se heredó por tradición.
FUNDACION DE ARROYO Arroyo inicia su historia como barrio de la municipalidad de Guayama. Nuestro pueblo se fundó en el año 1855. Pero mucho antes de esta fecha ya existían todas las buenas condiciones necesarias para que el barrio de Arroyo se convirtiera en municipio. Arroyo en sus principios era un territorio constituido de una pequeña población de pescadores honrados y trabajadores. Estos vivían en ranchos a corta distancia de quebradas y tres caños. En algunos sitios el mar se adentraba bastante. Con el tiempo, la población fue aumentada. Hubo necesidad de mejorar las condiciones del territorio. Se abrieron y se arreglaron caminos. También, se construyeron varios puentes. Todo esto se logró gracias a la ayuda de algunos vecinos, comerciantes y propietarios. En 1853, Arroyo tenía una numerosa población y contaba con más de trescientas (300) casas. Tuvo farmacias o botánicas y la iglesia. También, Arroyo contaba con grandes almacenes, haciendas de caña y un destacamento militar. Para este mismo año se comenzó el alumbrado público con farolitos de gas. Además, se construyó una fuente de agua pública en el caño que nace a la entrada de la calle San Fernando, hoy calle Marcelino Cintrón.
Se le pidió a los vecinos que conservan limpias las aguas y en buen estado la fuente. El agua se daba gratis a todos el vecindario que la necesitará. Un grupo de distinguidos vecinos y contribuyentes arroyanos hizo una petición al Gobernador y Capitán General de la Isla de Puerto Rico, don José Lemery. Ellos pidieron levantar como pueblo el barrio de su residencia. Le explicaron al Gobernador que en ese territorio existían las facilidades necesarias para la creación del pueblo de Arroyo. Así, el 25 de diciembre de 1855, el Párroco de Guayama, Don Manuel Saturnino Robert se trasladó a Arroyo para tomar el juramento de don Marcelino Cintrón Rodríguez, como primer Alcalde de nuestro pueblo. Por fin, Arroyo se convierte en Municipio! El pueblo celebró en grande este acontecimiento. Hubo bailes, carreras a caballo y en botes, juegos populares, parrandas y misas. Así nació un pueblo que con sano esfuerzo habría de heredar el fruto de la buena semilla de la educación social, cultural y económica de la historia de Arroyo.
NUESTRA HISTORIA En el 1859, Samuel B. Morse inauguró la primera línea telegráfica del telégrafo en la Hacienda La Enriqueta de ARROYO, donde residía su hija casada con un residente del pueblo. En el 1888, Enrique Huyke fundó la primera escuela de lenguajes de P.R. “Torre del Viejo” fue una organización secreta compuesta de hombres del pueblo para derrocar el gobierno español. Fueron arrestados en el 1898 y trasladados a una cárcel del norte de África. En el 1898, tropas americanas entraron por el pueblo de Arroyo logrando su captura.

OUR HISTORY In the 1859, Samuel B. Morse inaugurated the first telegraphic line in the Enriqueta Hacienda of Arroyo, where his daughter was married to resident of this town.
On the 1888, Enrique Huyke install the first school of languages of P.R.
“La Torre del Viejo” was a secret organization composed of men of the town to overthrow the Spanish government.

Americans Troops disembark in Arroyo’s port, today Paseo Las Americas.
It was requested to the neighbors to help conserve clean waters and in good state the fountain. The water was given free to all the neighborhood that need it. A group of distinguished neighbors and “arroyanos” (Arroyo’s citizens) made a request to the Governor and Commander in chief of the Island of Puerto Rico, José Lemery. They asked to elevate as town the district of their residence. They explained to the Governor that the territory has the necessary facilities for the creation of the Arroyo town. So, on the 25 of December of 1855, the Parish priest of Guayama, Don Manuel Saturnino Robert moved to Arroyo to take the oath from Don Marcelino Cintrón Rodríguez, as first Mayor of our town. Finally, Arroyo becomes Municipality! The town celebrated this in a great event. There were dances, popular horse races and boats, games, “parrandas” and “misas”. A town was born with a healthy effort and would have to inherit the good seed of the social education, cultural and economic of the Arroyo history.
ARROYO’S FOUNDATION Arroyo initiates its history like district of the municipality of Guayama. Our town was founded in 1855. But long before this date all the good necessary conditions existed so that Arroyo’s district became municipality. Arroyo in the beginning was a constituted territory of a small population of honest and working fishermen. These lived short-distance in broken farms of and three sewers. In some sites the sea was entered inland enough. With time, the population increased and there was a necessity to improve the conditions of the territory. They constructed and fixed roads. Also, several bridges were constructed. All this was obtained thanks to the aid of some neighbors, retailers and proprietors. In 1853, Arroyo had a numerous population and counted with more than three hundred (300) houses. It had botanical or pharmacies and the church. Also, Arroyo counted with a department store, properties of cane and a military detachment. For this same year the public lighting system begun with “farolitos” (gas latern). In addition a public water fountain was constructed in the sewer that is born on the entrance from San Fernando Street, today Marcelino Cintrón Street.
History of Arroyo ORIGIN OF THE NAME “ARROYO” The origin of the name of our town is told in four different versions. Let see: 1. Some people think that Arroyo began like an Indian small village in the place that today receives the name of Pitahaya district. Here were snails and stones toiled by the Indians. 2. Others indicate that several people of business coming from Guayama, were looking for a good port to receive and to bring merchandise. Therefore, one thinks that they offered many facilities to certain people so that they came to live in the wellknown place the Beach. 3. Others tell that several fishermen of “El Bajo” de Patillas changed themselves for the beach of “Cangrejos” because the abundance of fish in the place. There they constructed to farms and huts to little distance of the sea. 4. One fourth version maintains that in the site where are the ruins of the “Iglesia Vieja” (Old Church) it is the place of origin of Arroyo foundation. Some people tell that near the place where it was constructed what today we know like “Iglesia Vieja”, there was a small wooden bridge known like “Boquita de Arroyo” (Stream Small Mouth). Underneath that bridge it passed a little stream, where the people who traveled stopped to rest. In this place they took fresh water since the other near waters was unhealthy. Thus, the site acquired fame by its water. By use and custom the Stream was called “El Arroyo”. For that reason we say that the name of our beloved town was inherited by tradition.
