Finalist Mention - Prize WHAT IS THE BRIEF? After Desert Accommodation’s suggestions, Young Architects Competition - YAC goes back to Riyadh’s sands with Riyadh Dream Villas. This is the competition aiming at designing two luxury residences situated in the Al Wasil community. What is going to be the meaning of luxury in the near future? Which is going to be the best possible dwelling? These are the questions on which the competition is established.

THE SPECTRUM The project is derived by a careful analysis of the place with all its distinctiveness and attractiveness considering future dwelling around the area, as well as the architypes that have accumulated over time. The design was based on a linear typology, which is an architectural idea that creates a sequence of spaces organized along an axis. Keeping in mind sustainable strategies to enhance the experience.

9

APPROACH Spectrum is the scale that represents two extremes, each of which in our perspective represents a separate civilization. The design intent is to develop a natural-looking environment by extracting features from the late two regions - Hejaz and Najd are major regions with different architectural styles influenced by the context and traditions.

PASSIVE DESIGN - TEMPERATURE MODULATION

Considering the harsh climate in the region, space is designed in a way to create its own micro climate which enhances the user experience with an aesthetic approach.

FRAMES OF DESTINY

COURTYARD ADAPTATION

The Central axis is communal area which visually separates both the villas but yet leads to a vibrant ecological wonder. The space gives us unique experience at different points which ultimately merges Sand, Water and Vegetation- OASIS.

IGBC Plantium rated Green building WHAT IS THE BRIEF? Telangana Government has plans to set up a UCE in 45 acres of campus which will be a one-stop-shop for all urban related issues being faced by cities. This will act as an urban think tank and urban hub. It will have facilities for training, an urban innovation hub, place to depict and house best practices in urban sector on a dynamic basis, facilities to host and lodge dignitaries and venue for hosting workshops.

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES The built mass is guided by contours and an interconnected network for water conservation. Minimum entrances (two) to the site, changing station for E-vehicles provided at the entrance for specially-abled and those in need ensures a completely pedestrian campus walkable from parking to farthest building within 5 minutes. The cohesive built fabric with terraces punctuating the massing and a connection across the East and West Parcel of site is visible here. The Tower of Vision at the centre and the Plaza of Convergence signify the heart of the UCE campus. South side can be seen with swales and regenerated landscape. The interesting path of the Public movement can be seen starting from the West side and the leading to various interactive exhibits in the U-Hub outdoor area.

APPROACH TO DESIGN & MASTERPLAN

The Profile of the site allows for a linear placement of the built form for efficient utilization of the site area.

Thus we combined both the inferences and combined them to have a balanced design approach. The output of that approach does not create an aesthetically connected built form.

Urban Centre for Excellence | Competition - 2021

The climate data informs a diametrically opposite arrangement which is against the efficient utilization of the site area.

Dynamic structuring of the forms provides for an interesting design while inviting W/ NW/SE winds.

The dynamic flow of the form is molded to accommodate the centrality concept and integrate it with the vision of making it iconic.

The centre is planned to have high density housing and the other wings surrounded will be low engulfing the whole tower which will act as internal courtyard.

To make the tower iconic, the inverse of the previous decision is made as the centre will be low and other wings will be high.

Urban Centre for Excellence | Competition - 2021

MASSING The form is emerged as a double spiral; one- the built mass that spirals out with a series of cascading terraces and second- the Urban forest that spirals in from the outside to claim its rightful place in the composite system of built and unbuilt. A central ‘Plaza of Convergence’ pulsating with public movement brings in dynamic element. ‘Tower of Vision’ is intended as a landmark and a reference. This composite arrangement becomes a powerful means of convergence, communication and also segregation

SOLAR SIMULATION - BUILDING FACADE 25

IGBC - SUSTAINABILITY STUDY

FACADE & DAYLIGHTING OF U-HUB BLOCK Regarding Daylighting two main objectives were incorporated into the concept for TSUCE buildings. These are, firstly, providing enough daylight during occupied hours ( 9 am – 5 pm ) to reduce electric lighting demand and secondly manage glare and reduce unwanted solar loads into the building occupied zones. Overall, the objective is to reduce energy use, carbon and increase user comfort which research has shown also increases productivity. The fenestrations have been imagined as a pixelated layer over the glass layer inside. The pixels may be solid wall, glazing , BIPV, Jallis etc. The opacity and transparency percentage of the pixels will be determined as per internal function and external orientations. This flexible façade concept was successfully tested using computer simulation for two important parameters Daylight Autonomy and Useful Daylight Luminance which clearly show that the concept allows ample daylight inside and manages glare and direct light. During detailed stages this would be further optimised.

Indented Block Profile reduces effective depths of floor plates and improves daylight penetration

ZONAL ANAYLSIS

ZONE 1

ZONE 2

As Kremlin is the origin point of Moscow, it has lots of heritage spots and huge scope of tourism. Red Square is a open pedestrian public zone of 73,000 sq2 which provides a large open space. It has around 70% open space and only 30% built up space. Due to this, the visual scale of this place is reduced. The main typology is Public space.

Zone 2 comprises mainly of Residential areas and institutions. The Plot to Building ratio in this zone is very less, which makes it less denser. The open space to built space ratio here is 60/40. This region is close to the Boulevard ring which increases the tourist attraction, thus providing a sense of openness.

ZONE 3

ZONE 4

This is one of the main commercial zone is Moscow. This is highly populated due to the commercial activity around it. It has the maximum built space due to shops, restaurants and cafe’s. It has 60% built space and only 40% of open space.

Zone 4 is mainly residential and few institutional buildings are situated. The open space only 25% comparable to other zones.
