JDAIM curriculum culminates with the
Stars’ annual performance March 17 at
2:30 p.m. at Sylvania Tam-O-Shanter. Students and their families have been invited to volunteer on or off the ice during the year or for just the performance, as well as to attend the show to cheer on the Stars. Gliding Stars is near and dear to the Himmels’ hearts. Their late daughter Lily had special needs and did not walk, but she loved being on the ice, Bill Himmel said. As a hockey player and hockey coach and officiator, Bill and his family are always at the ice-skating rink. Lily’s therapist recommended the family visit the Findlay chapter of Gliding Stars, as she needed special skates to fit over her braces and there was no such program in Toledo, Himmel remembered. “They fitted her in skates, put her on the ice, and I just bawled. What a great program,” he said. “She loved the speed.” In 2008, four other families from the Findlay chapter helped the Himmels bring a Gliding Stars chapter to Toledo. It is now one of seven national chapters, joining Cleveland as the second and third in Ohio. Eleven years later, there are 35 Stars ranging in age from two to 34 in the Toledo chapter, and the Himmels couldn’t be more proud of them. “A lot of kids with special needs

For Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month, many communities host educational programs annually in February to advocate for Jewish children and adults with special needs. Jewish Toledo has offered JDAIM programs in February since 2010. Now, raising disability awareness and maximizing inclusivity is a year-round value, said Wendy Payne of Temple Shomer Emunim. This year, activities related to JDAIM have been woven into the curriculum at the religious schools since
August, with a focus on the adaptive ice-skating program Gliding Stars, Payne said. “JDAIM might be something that is observed in communities once a year, but here, we think it’s important to be inclusive all year, every day, all the time. Inclusion is something everybody can learn about and practice,” she said. “Gliding Stars is a great organization to feature to educate the kids about Jewish disability awareness.” Several volunteers and skaters in the program, its Stars, are members of the Jewish community. Several of them, as well as Bill and Terri Himmel, who brought the program to Toledo, have spoken during religious school sessions about the impact it has had on their lives. “We began the school year with Bill talking to all religious school kids and parents about the Gliding stars program. We did a follow up session later in the fall with a student about her experience as a Star with the program. She shared with her peers how incredible the program is for her,” said Kim Brody of Congregation B’nai Israel. Gliding Stars skate from mid-September to mid-March with an annual choreographed show at the end of the year. This year’s religious schools’

Statement regarding recent Lima synagogue vandalism
Volume 67 No. 6 • 20 pages
The Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo condemns the senseless vandalism at Temple Beth Israel-Shaare Zedek in Lima, Ohio, recently. We stand with the congregants of the synagogue, who on Saturday morning discovered damage created apparently by BB and pellet guns. Thankfully, no one was in the building at the time of the act. (ISSN 0040-9081) Toledo Jewish News is published 11 times per year, by Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, 6465 Sylvania Avenue, Sylvania, Ohio 43560. In response to the incident, the congregation released the following statement: Our congregation of Temple Beth Israel-Shaare Zedek first and foremost wishes to thank all of our friends, family, and neighbors who have reached out to us in response to the vandalization of our synagogue. The investigation into this incident is ongoing. While we have been advised not to discuss it for the time being, we are grateful to the local and federal authorities who have made it their priority to assist us in this trying time. As we come together as a community to address this disturbing act, we ask for privacy while we process what has taken place. We wish for our next steps forward to be confident as we continue to ensure our community’s safety. The outpouring of support makes it clear to us that Jews do indeed have a home in Lima, and we can’t thank everyone enough for their continued support.

Gliding Stars continued from page 1 aren’t included with stuff in the classroom, or invited to their classmates’ birthday parties, things like that. It’s all about seeing the 35 stars out there week in and week out smiling and being part of a group, making their experience the best it can be,” he said. “We provide skates, harnesses, walkers, and helmets. Whether they can walk or not, we get them on the ice. We have not found a challenge to skating that we couldn’t overcome.” Lily passed away in 2010. Her parents kept Gliding Stars going and look at it as her legacy. They and their work have since been recognized with a Jefferson Award. Her brother, Sam, 13, has been around the program since birth and is now a volunteer instructor, Himmel said. “Sam also came and spoke to our students about the program and he spoke from his heart. Gliding Stars is something he’s so proud of,” Payne added. Gliding Stars Toledo is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run entirely by volunteers, which are always needed for the annual performance and throughout the year, Himmel said. Volunteers get a lot out of the program, he added. “They’ll start a bond with the Star they’re helping and will probably end up with a friend for life. Many of our volunteers and Stars spend time together outside of Gliding Stars,” he said. The March 17 performance, this year themed as “The Luck of the Irish” to correspond with St. Patrick’s Day, also serves as the organization’s annual fundraiser. Programs featuring the Stars’ biographies and pictures will be for sale and there will be a basket raffle and 50/50 raffle. Those interested in volunteering for the organization can contact Himmel at 419-304-4324 or glidingstarstoledo@gmail.com

LOJE Conference
Jewish Toledo was well represented at Jewish Federations of North America International Lion of Judah Conference in January. Community leader Sandy Soifer, Foundation Director Arleen R. Levine, and former Federation president and past Kipnis-W ilson/Fr ied land Award honoree Marla Levine were among 1,400 Lions of Judah from six countries who gathered in Florida to celebrate the powerful impact of Jewish women philanthropists. Arleen R. Levine was honored as a 2019 Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award recipient. The award is given to inspiring women in Jewish communities around the world. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE). Currently, Toledo has nine women who have endowed their gifts through a LOJE.
When you create a Jewish legacy, you take an important step toward strengthening Jewish life for generations to come. Planning your gift now will help ensure your grandchildren can enjoy the same rich traditions and closeness of community that have given your life so much meaning and purpose.

L’Dor Va’Dor – How you can make a legacy for Jewish Toledo Have you considered making a lasting gift to your Jewish community? Toledo Jewish Community Foundation has a program that will help you easily create a legacy for generations to come: L’Dor Va’Dor Matching Life Insurance Program.
With the L’Dor Va’Dor, Foundation shares the cost of new policies, helping the holder make a charitable investment now that will yield significantly more in the future. The program’s Hebrew title, which translates to “from generation to generation,” highlights the long-term impact of the program. Your legacy adds to the Long Term Community Needs Fund (formerly known as the Unrestricted Fund), which is necessary to create and maintain innovative Federation programs for decades to come. From generation to generation, from your children, to their children, future Jewish Toledoans will benefit from your legacy. BOX: L’Dor Va’Dor Fast Facts • Policies can be for single life or joint lives • Policies must be permanent insurance policies with a guaranteed premium and death benefit • Premiums are to be paid over as short a timeframe as practical (not to exceed ten years) and Foundation will pay 50 percent of the premium. • Foundation should be named the owner and beneficiary of the new policy and must be designated to Foundation’s Long Term Community Needs Fund or to a permanent campaign endowment such as a Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) Fund or a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) Fund. • Donation of existing policies with the same guarantees as to premium and death benefit are eligible for this program for premiums re-calculated and going forward (i.e. no credit for prior premiums paid). • This policy cannot be used to meet the qualifications to become a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) Fund For more information about L’Dor Va’Dor, contact Foundation Director Arleen R. You can help purchase food for Passover baskets
SH
Passover is coming soon, and the images in our mind are becoming clearer. Family members gathered around the table. Matzot, fine wine, the beautiful seder plate and kiddush cups, a mouth-watering meal. Everyone enjoying the traditional celebration. Take a moment and think about having a Passover this year without this. This is a painful reality for some of our community members. Every year around Passover you receive a letter in the mail that invites you to make a donation to the Myron Edelstein Ma’os Hittem Food Pantry Fund. What does “Ma’os Hittem” (or “Maot Chitim”) mean? What exactly is this fund? The exact translation of Ma’os Hittem is “wheat money.” It is an ancient religious obligation of providing the poor with traditional food for Passover so that everyone can share in our joy. Donations are deposited in the Myron Edelstein Ma’os Hittem Food Pantry Fund and are used to purchase food for the Passover food baskets. A basket that feeds up to four people costs approximately $60 and includes kosher chicken, potatoes, carrots, matzah ball soup, matzot, apples, honey, nuts, gefelte fish, eggs, horseradish, and macaroons. Candles are also included. Last year 46 low income individuals were able to celebrate a traditional Passover with dignity. Your Ma’os Hittem request will soon arrive in the mail. Or you can go online to www.jewishtoledo.org/jfs. Fulfill your obligation and donate so that everyone can enjoy a traditional Passover seder. Thank you for your generosity.

Experience a Memorable Overnight Jewish Initiative Apply today at www.jewishtoledo.org/emoji
In 2016, Experience a Memorable Overnight Jewish Initiative (EMOJI) was established by Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo and Toledo Jewish Community Foundation. Funded by Foundation’s Long-term Community Needs Fund, the EMOJI program was created to make attending Jewish summer camp an option for all Toledo Jewish community children. EMOJI allows Jewish children in the Toledo area to attend Jewish summer camp FREE OF CHARGE for first-time campers, or at a very reduced cost for children who are returning to a Jewish camp. Attendance at Jewish summer camp has been shown to strengthen participants’ connection to their Jewish identity. As a result, they are more likely to value their Jewish heritage, support Jewish causes, and take on leadership roles within their Jewish communities as adults. So, you're probably wondering...how does this work? To be eligible for the EMOJI program, the child must live in the greater Toledo area and be in second through tenth grade. The child’s immediate family must also be current donors in good standing to Federation’s Annual Campaign. What do you need to do to be accepted? Have more questions? Contact Hallie Freed at hallie@Jewishtoledo.org or 419-724-0362 or fill out the EMOJI application online at www.jewishtoledo.org/emoji The future of our Jewish community lies within our children. Federation and Foundation hope to connect you and your children to pivotal Jewish camp experiences that will help create positive and lasting memories for the rest of your lives.

Toledo BBYO enjoys fun winter activities By Sam Federman Hello, Toledo teens and parents of teens. I hope you have been keeping flexible as we experience all of Mother Nature’s extremes. The Toledo chapters of BBYO have had a number of events over the past few weeks. The boys’ chapter, BSN, went bowling one week and took a trip to the University of Toledo recreation center for basketball and air hockey the next. B’not Shalom, the girls’ chapter, has been collecting food for donation and went to Koala Berry for some froyo. They are also selling sweatshirts designed by members of the chapter. As always, I want to remind families that ALL Toledo teens are offered a $100 discount for BBYO membership. This means that the cost of a 5-year membership from 8th-12th grade is only $50. For more information about BBYO or our upcoming events, please feel free to email me at sam@jewishtoledo.org. I look forward to hearing from you.

Million Dollar Moments
Former Toledoan Rick Markoff, Ph.D., is the author of “MillionDollar Moments and the Amazing Professionals W ho Helped Make Them Possible.” The book tells the stories of 18 highly distinguished resource development professionals and nonprofit CEOs; who they are, how they made their career choices, and the hoops they went through to become resource development professionals or major non-profit leaders. More importantly, this is a book about their first million dollar gifts, or their most impactful million dollar gifts; how these gifts came about, what these gifts meant to the organizations represented by said professionals, and the lessons learned throughout the process. It is published by the University of Toledo Press with a foreword by Denise DeBartolo York, owner of the San Francisco 49ers. "Million-Dollar Moments and The Amazing Professionals Who Helped Make Them Possible" can be purchased at utoledopress.com. Ora Pescovitz, M.D., president of Oakland University, states, "Rick Markoff ’s book, 'Million-Dollar Moments,' is a wonderful compilation of fascinating examples of individuals who have made gifts using the right combination of treasure, time, and talent. The impact of these gifts is described, as is the role of the donor, the gift officer, and the institution in bringing about the transformation that a $1 million gift can have. The book is instructive, engaging, and inspiring. It makes you want to go out to cultivate your next million dollar gift." The Judith Herb College of Education awarded Markoff its Distinguished Achievement Award in 2008. His non-profit experience includes executive capacities as president of St. Vincent Medical Center Foundation, executive vice president of Simon Youth Foundation, visiting senior advisor to the chancellor at Indiana University Purdue University, and founding president of Damar Foundation. While in Toledo, Markoff was founding president of the Greater Toledo Chapter of the National Society of Fund Raising Executives, president of the Sylvania City Schools Board of Education, and president of the Congregation Etz Chayim Board of Directors. Markoff is married to Beverly (B.Ed., 1971), a leading interior designer in Carmel, Indiana.
Local theatre company produces benefit performances for Jewish Family Service ACT presents The Velocity of Autumn with Toledo theatre veterans Madge Levinson and Paul Causman at The Valentine Theatre Studio A
Actors Collaborative Toledo in association with The Valentine Theatre present The Velocity of Autumn by Eric Coble to benefit Jewish Family Service of Toledo. The stage reading, directed by Jeffrey Albright, will be performed March 16 and 17. Each performance will be followed by a meet and greet and Q&A session with Levinson and Causman. The Velocity of Autumn swirls around Alexandra, an 80-year-old artist in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion, and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second-floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. Painter, writing about 'The Fabric of Her Life'
“Will you be my writing buddy?” This simple request transformed Sheila Painter’s life. Her sister in Florida was participating in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo.org) and asked her to join in. This California non-profit has been encouraging people for
years to write novels. Their premise: From November 1st through November 30th, write 50,000 words. Sheila doesn’t read novels, let alone write them. She admits to being a non-fiction reader, mostly listening to audiobooks while multitasking. But she accepted the challenge and had two months to think of a story, plot and characters. She had to learn formatting of written texts, blogs, dialog, point-of-view, and so much more. And learn she did. She did her research, prepared her outline and closed the door to her quilt studio on November first, ready to start writing. Sheila believed the adage: Write what you know. Her novel The Fabric of Her Life features Ann, who, like Sheila, is a quilter, blogger, ukulele player, line dancer, storyteller and volunteer. Sheila spun the story to include a mysterious death, overcoming obstacles and funny dating mishaps. Non-fiction story lines creep in, as
the book also includes true weight loss tips, animal stories, American history, reading book suggestions and more. And when she ‘won’ the challenge, she thought, Now what? “I wanted people to read my work,” Sheila admits. “So I figured I’d self-publish through Amazon. It was harder for me than the writing!” She had to master copyrights, pagination, bleed, and many other publishing details. But the free site, kdp.amazon.com, leads you through the steps. Through explanations and videos, they make it clear and doable. Three weeks after finishing and editing her book, it appeared on Amazon.com. “It’s a rush to see your work available on Amazon!” Sheila confides. As this article is written, The Fabric of Her Life is listed as the 46,557th most popular woman’s contemporary fiction books on the site! Amazon claims most of the purchase price, which Sheila doesn’t mind, as they made the whole thing possible. But she was surprised to
find that other people around the country are selling her book on the site for eleven cents to $2.36 more than the Amazon $10.00 purchase price. She admits being puzzled over this, as the book is print-on-demand. But if someone buys through a ‘distributor’, the author makes even less! Happily, authors can buy their own book discounted from Amazon, so Sheila has ordered copies of The Fabric of Her Life and sells locally to people she sees. “I had to pay the shipping and tax, but I still sell copies in person for less than on Amazon,” she says. “If I can publish a book, anyone can!” Sheila goes on. “If you have a book in you, go for it!” [ E d i t o r ’s n o t e : B y s p e c i a l arrangement, copies of The Fabric of Her Life are available for purchase at Temple Shomer Emunim for $9 each. Sheila will donate a portion of each book sold to Jewish Federation.]
