initech corporate office

01

Client Profile: The owners of Initech Corp. will be opening the doors to their new start up computer software company at 818 Stewart, a recently built state of the art office building in Seattle. The corporate culture of Initech is business casual and the clients would like to model their culture with the likes of other high tech companies such as Google and Twitter. Initech’s main business is the development of applications (“apps”) for mobile devices. As they see it, the essence of having apps on a mobile device is that they make life easier, more fun, and more convenient. The design of Initech’s office space will evoke the notion of a multifunctional tool, much like a Swiss army knife. There will be one core collaborative area, with the more specific functional areas extending from the center.

tarte beauty bar

02

The Tarte Beauty Bar is a retail store project which evolved from the expansion of an existing brand, Tarte. Tarte is a cosmetics company that creates make up formulated with natural, healthy ingredients and is simple to apply. Tarte founder and CEO, Maureen Kelly, describes its slogan as, “high performance naturals. The Tarte Beauty Bar will be a beauty salon that focuses on make up application using Tarte products exclusively. Since the company is highly invested in using natural ingredients in their products, the retail store will also reflect this in the design by using sustainable materials and finishes throughout the space. Target clients will be those who need professional make up services for any occasion from an intimate dinner date to a formal wear event. Manicure and pedicure services will also be offered, and changing rooms will be available for those who require a space to change into their formal attire before heading off to the event. The Tarte Beauty Bar will be located in Bellevue Square Mall in Bellevue, WA, where there will be a high concentration of the target clientele and local competition is a hair salon and day spa.

The Calgary Zoo in Alberta, Canada had recently announced a 20 year plan for an expansion that will focus on themes of conservation and adaptation. The expansion will include an interpretive wildlife center that will exhibit the zoo’s vast collection of taxidermic animals. The main goal of the center is to inspire real change in the world by transforming the heartfelt connections visitors enjoy into direct conservation action. Program requirements include interactive displays with taxidermy animals, a learning room for small children, a large mountain display with a water feature, a multifunctional space, two classrooms, and six offices. LEED Gold status for the building structure is also an important goal. Since adaptation is a main theme, the concept symbol used for the design of this interpretive center is a penguin. The unique adaptation features of a penguin (its coloration, dense bones, coated feathers, and body shape) make it a perfect concept symbol. Also, the penguin exhibit at the zoo it one of the highest visited exhibits at the zoo. This project was a collaborative effort with three classmates in a Senior Studio class. My area of focus for the design is the Multifunctional room.

The Multifunctional Room is an all-purpose event room with magnificent views of the river. My vision for this room is for it to be capable of being completely open to the outdoors as well as the interior display space. This will be accomplished with large pivoting doors on both the north and south sides of the room. Examples of the many uses of this space include a formal banquet event or a conference meeting.

alki row house

04

Client profile: The Hendersons are a middle-aged couple (software developer and real estate developer) with two children upgrading from a small craftsman house to a newly built modern row house at 1732 Alki Ave SW with views of the waterfront. They are an active family and intend to take advantage of the activities in their new neighborhood. They would like the row house to be very functional, modern, and innovative. They appreciate the textures of stone, concrete, glass, steel, and wood. Their goal is to incorporate as many sustainable features as possible. The Hendersons intend to integrate three adjacent row houses (nearly identical) on the property to live in one and rent out the other two.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

CLIMATE

* Overhanging roof for protection from the rain * Rain screens * Green roof * Try to maximize sunlight with placement of windows

VIEW * Ensure public spaces (living room, kitchen) have a view of the water

PRIVACY * Best option for privacy is located behind the home where there is a steep gradation and pleny of trees * Place private spaces (bedrooms, office) in these areas

kitchen island The original concept/symbol used for inspiration in the design of this house is an arrow. The three parts of an arrow represent different things which guided the design of the different parts of the house. The head of an arrow is sharp and points. This is represented by the living room, which points towards the views of the Puget Sound. The shaft of the arrow supports and connects the head and tail feathers. The circulation space (stairs, hallways) represents that aspect. And finally, the tail feathers are soft, and with softness comes blankets and pillows (bedrooms). For the kitchen island design, in keeping with the arrow theme, a bow and arrow symbol is used. Without a bow, an arrow cannot be used to its full potential. Similarly, a kitchen is much more usable with an island. The solid rectangular form represents the bow, and the thin, perpendicular piece represents the arrow.

the leschi house

The Leschi is part of the Contemporary Series in the Timberland Custom Homes collection. Timberland is a modular home construction company based in the Northwest. They pride themselves on building superior quality and competitively priced homes. The Leschi model is spectacular with its soaring ceilings and modern look. My architectural model was constructed with matte board and corregated paper, and is at a scale of 1/4 = 1’-0.
