ATL Downtown, ELEVATE PUBLIC ART rfp 2015: Concept and project approach OrchestraONE_Studio
This installation encourages social interaction through the presentation of a built artifact functioning as a vehicle for individual and communal vanity. Museums containing functional artifacts or objects of fine art play a major role in furthering the understanding of the craft and design of the artifacts we use daily. To put these objects on display i.e. chairs, tables, lighting, creates a tension as the objects of function are now treated as hung or sculptural art. Displayed on pedestals, and seen from a distance, the items that we use daily are now functionless and unable to serve their intended purpose. This installation questions a scenario where you could step over the line and sit on the furniture or play with the lights. Atlanta’s residents are encouraged to ascend onto the platform, interact with the artifact, and photograph their experiences as they sit and pose in front of the display. This installation is comprised of two thought’s or two portions. The first being the artifact. This object, bench, represents human movement and activity. Human movement has long been studied and is an integral part of any object that intends to reference the results. Studies of both the human body and paths of travel show that a pattern emerges out of the chaos. Initial studies for the bench lead to the conclusion that a reflection of a represented pattern of movement will create opportunities for various human use and connectivity with the bench. The movement of the pattern will create intricate shadows while representing the beauty of studied human movement and the variations in paths of travel and community interaction. The movement of the ribs accommodates variations in human scale. The up and down movement of the ribs act as leg/ foot rests for people of different heights and sizes. The second is the presentation of the object. The staging, or object display, fosters interactivity with passersby and allows for a learning experience in regards to the construction of the bench. The ladder is done by displaying the steel negatives of the bench legs, that were water jet cut, by organizing them in a pattern to serve as a photographic background. In doing this one can make the visual connection between the construction process of the bench and the material itself. As a whole, this installation presents an opportunity to interact with an object in a situation of voyeurism or putting oneself on display. A platform for memories and photographs is given to Atlanta’s inhabitants to capture a moment in history together.

Project Approach: Materials of this design include either locally supplier and/or harvested wood. Locally supplied, fabricated and powder coated steel. The display is of wood stud, plywood and exterior rated gyp or sim. The structural ribs are made of 5/8” powder coated hot rolled steel. The white color of the ribs will retain the purity of the area it is placed, while reflecting slight color variations with each season. Current cost of materials /time and instillation is $ 8,625.00 Please see last page for a further in depth quote.

INSTILLATION IN THE CITY Suited for a multiplicity of sites the display is not defined by its surroundings, rather, it is a self contained entity to be interacted with.

Materials of this design include locally supplied steel, blackened allen head bolts and locally harvested oak. The steel pieces are cut with a water jet from 5/8” hot rolled plate steel. All of the steel components will be precut and welded together to make a large complete frame. The frame will then be white powder coated by a local steel shop. The large wood slabs will them be pre-drilled and set with threaded brass inserts to be bolted into the final frame. Aside from being an object of both design during the day, this bench is intended to become a device for way finding at night. Installed and hidden within the structural connection areas of the bench are energy efficient LED strip light are aligned facing up and down.

The movement and flow of the structural ribs, both in and out, up and down, represents this movement and variation in a path of travel and community interaction. Additionally, the movement of the ribs becomes places for one to rest their legs while the up and down placement accommodates people of different heights and sizes. The white color of the ribs will also retain the purity of the space it is put in. Creating intricate shadows and changing its reflected color tone throughout the seasons. Because they are powder coated, they will also be easy to clean and maintain.
