B.F.I.T. Lecture Space

The objective of this project was to build an on site lecture space for the B.F.I.T. campus. Somewhere people could go to do homework or eat lunch without being bothered by the surrounding areas. I walked the campus looking for a space just hidden enough for relaxation without taking away from the natural feel. I came upon a space by the automotive garage witch looked like it could use an overhaul. There were different obstacles I had to build around but the space was perfect. Through research and my analysis the following statements provide a guide to why the space would be good for lectures. The sun will shine through from around 11:00 A.M. for about 5 hours and will subside around 4:00P.M. This allows for some natural light to shine through onto the deck. The tree can provide cover during hot days and will be very beneficial during the summer. The surrounding buildings provide a sound barrier to block out the construction and traffic noise through out the course of the day. This also helps someone who wants to speak out loud in the area to project there voice with little effort. The entrance is where the current in-door eating area is near the back of the school. It has high foot traffic but will allow students to have easy access in a common place. My idea was to build a deck like space connected to the building in my area chosen. I used a deck framing system to support the floor of the deck. While doing this I also had to build around an existing tree, I did not want to affect its growth so I cut a hole in the deck to allow the tree to grow freely through the structure. For the actual flooring I would use composite decking to endure the weather and easy cleaning. Railings around the outside for protection run the length of the deck. A handicap ramp was put in at the entrance at 5’ wide it makes for easy access for everyone. The deck floor is exactly 1’ below the existing floor in the breezeway witch required for 12’ of

ramp. The ramp is also equipped with a double handrail and an automatic door opener. The door swings inwards because of the tight spaces on the deck. For support I have 2 I beams supporting the structure on the driveway side covered with a wooden detailing hiding the beam inside it. Once outside there are four 4’ picnic tables for lecture or lunch. Around the tree is also bench seating where students can lean on to enjoy the outdoor space. The back of the deck is set up with 4 benches at 6’ each. This allows for an open feel and a space where a group can talk without interruption. Finally a podium with the school logo is in the furthest corner, this will provide an attention-grabbing stand where students will face and take notes for the lectures.
