In just its second year of existence, the College of Southern Idaho softball team won a 2008 Region 18 Championship, defeating Salt Lake CC 21-1 in the championship game. The Golden Eagles’ success did not stop there. They went on to place 7th at the NJCAA National Tournament in Plant City, Fla. Now five players return from that team with hopes of returning to the national stage. They’ve set their sights on winning a national championship. Leading the way is sophomore Megan Zimmerman. A broken hand ended her freshman season early. Still, she earned Region 18 first-team honors as well as NFCA All-West honors. She is joined by returning sophomores, Cassi Merrill, Kyla Bryant, McKensy Hillstead and Dani Grant. Erin Olander, a transfer from BYU, gives the Golden Eagles their sixth sophomore. While CSI lost a lot of its experience in the circle with the graduation of four pitchers, Golden Eagle head coach Nick Baumert said he is excited about this year’s pitching core. “Kyla and McKensy have improved a ton and give us that sophomore leadership,” Baumert said. “Joining them is Utah 2A Player of the Year Generra Nielson, Utah first-team all-state selection Brie Dimond and Minico High School standout Allie Thain.” Catching that group will be Zimmerman and freshman Chelsea Nix from Show Low, Ariz. “We are very lucky to have two extremely athletic players at the catcher position,” Baumert said. The infield is almost entirely new. Freshmen Ashley Chappel, Michon Vanderpoel, Madison Allen, Brittany Gonzales and Kayla Powell join returning corner players Hillstead and Bryant. Zimmerman could also see some time in the infield. “I think our defense will be improved from the past two seasons,” Baumert said. “We have different options and will be able to play whoever is swinging the bat.” With returners Merrill and Grant anchoring the outfield, Baumert will look to freshman Jaelle Judkins and Olander to slip into the starting rotation. “We probably have four of the most talented outfielders in the league,” Baumert said. “They have experience, speed and the ability to make big-time plays.” Even though this year’s team is young, Baumert said he expects them to be competitive early and challenge for the league title late. “We are young but 6

I think we have a chance to be a very dynamic team,” Baumert said. “I’m excited to see how far this team can go.” To win their second straight Region 18 Championship, the Golden Eagles will need to beat some very tough competition. “Region 18 has some great teams,” Baumert said. “Our goal is to be playing well in the end. I think we’ve done that the past two years, winning our way into the Region 18 Championships game both times. Everything we do all season will be for the ultimate goal of winning the championship and going to nationals.”

Nick Baumert 3rd Season Nick Baumert begins his third season as the College of Southern Idaho women’s head softball coach. In just two years, the 2007 Region 18 Coach of the Year has built a program, led it to a Region 18 Championship and brought home a 7th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament. The 2008 season was successful in many ways. The Golden Eagles had their first All-American in shortstop Rachel Evans. They had three NFCA All-West selections, six NFCA Academic All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic All-Americans. The team posted a 3.3 gpa, good enough for NFCA and NJCAA Academic All-American team status. “Last year’s players really defined the term student-athlete,” Baumert said. “It was an exciting year from the aspect of our success on the softball field as well as our success in the classroom.” Baumert, who was the Twin Falls High School varsity coach for seven seasons, led the Bruins to a 159-46 record during that time. He won the Region III title five times and placed fifth three

times at the state tournament. Throughout his high school coaching career, he coached one high school All-American, six Region III Players of the Year and 29 Region III first team selections. He also helped 12 players continue their softball career at the college level. Baumert received coach of the year accolades five times for Region III, twice for the Times-News and seven times from the District IV coaches. Most recently, Baumert was named Distinguished Softball Coach of the Year for Idaho in 2006. Baumert, 41, is married to Karen. They have two daughters, Katelynn and Kylie.

Debbie Dodds 1st Season Former Twin Falls High School standout Debbie Dodds has joined the 2008 Region 18 Champion CSI softball team as an assistant coach. Dodds, who played softball and graduated from BYU, was the only high school All-American softball player at Twin Falls High School. She started for the Bruins all four years. “Debbie is one of the hardest workers I have ever been around,” CSI head coach Nick Baumert said. “She has a great softball background and comes from an amazing family. We are excited to have her and feel very lucky to have her return to Twin Falls. I think she might just be my best recruit yet.” Dodds helped lead BYU to the NCAA tournament as a senior. She earned first team Mountain West Conference honors in 2004 and 2005 at BYU. She also was named to the National Fast-pitch Coaches Association west region team in 2004. As a senior, Dodds was named the team’s most inspirational player. She also excelled in the classroom earning scholar athlete honors. After graduating from BYU with a degree in physical education, Dodds became the head coach at Timpview High School in Orem, Utah. She led the team to its first ever state softball appearance. This isn’t the first time Dodds and Baumert have worked together on the softball diamond. Dodds played for Baumert her last three years of high school and has worked several CSI softball camps. In 2001, Dodds was the Region III Player of the Year at TFHS. “She is a perfect fit for our program,” Baumert said. “She has a great understanding of the game and what it takes to be successful. Debbie is the type of coach that can take us to an even higher level. She knows what it takes to succeed and will place high expectations on our players.”

Courtney Dale 3rd Season Courtney Dale begins her third season as the College of Southern Idaho volunteer pitching coach. Courtney, a former All-American at UCLA, led the Bruins to a national championship in 1999. The Pac 10 Pitcher of the Year pitched in the national championship game and hit the game-winning home run. Courtney was a part of the two national runner-up finishes at the national tournament her junior and senior year as well. In 2000, Courtney was the first pick overall in the USA Women’s Professional Fast-pitch Softball League. After her playing career at UCLA, Courtney was a member of the gold medal team in the Pam Am Qualifier in Maracy, Venezuela. She then competed on the US national team. From 2002-2005, Courtney played professionally in Japan. She was named league MVP in 2002 and led her team to the Japanese League Championship. Courtney and her husband David live in Fresno with their daughter Lauren and son Jack. “Not only is Courtney an incredible pitching coach, but even more a great person. She has been able to bring real life experience to our team and teach the players what it takes to improve every day. Her competitiveness is contagious.” - Nick Baumert

Gerald L. Beck began his career at the College of Southern Idaho in 1975 and became president of the college in 2005. His many titles at the college include Instructor, Coordinator of Trade and Industry Programs, Dean of Continuing Education/Summer School, Vice President of Instruction, and Executive Vice President/Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Beck is an Idaho native. He received his bachelor’s degree in Technical Education, his master’s degree in Teacher Education, and his Ed. D. in Adult Education from the University of Idaho. He completed his post doctoral at Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. In addition to his duties at the college, Dr. Beck is a member of the Twin Falls Rotary Club, and is a board member of the State Workforce Development Council appointed by the Governor. He serves as a board member on many local organizations including Southern Idaho Economic Development Organization, Region IV Development Association and Magic Valley Regional Medical Center. He is past president of the Idaho Association of Private Industry Councils. Dr. Beck and his wife, Barbara, have three adult children and three grandchildren. He attributes much of his success to the opportunities provided by the college and the support from his family and co-workers.

Former CSI women’s basketball coach Joel Bate is in the midst of his second year at the helm of Golden Eagle Athletics. Bate has worn many hats at CSI. He first came to CSI in 1993 as an English professor and women’s basketball coach. “CSI is a great place to work,” Bate said. “I’ve been lucky enough to work with athletics and academics. We have great coaches and a great staff here and the work they’ve done this year has been very positive, not only on the court but in the classroom and community as well,” Bate said. “I love working with our many boosters, fans and corporate sponsors who have helped make CSI a special place to be.” Bate coached at CSI from 1993 until 2000, leading the Golden Eagles to the national tournament in 1999. During that span, Bate compiled a 144-78 record. He coached four NJCAA All-Americans and four NJCAA Academic AllAmericans. Two players went on to play professional basketball, including Jessica Gibbs Mesna who assisted current coach Randy Rogers. In 1999, Bate earned Region 18 Coach of the Year honors. Prior to working at CSI, Bate taught and coached at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise. He taught senior English and headed the English department. In addition to his teaching duties, he coached girls’ volleyball, track and basketball, where he compiled a 114-32 record and four third-place state finishes. Bate earned his undergraduate degree in marketing at Boise State University and his master’s degree in English at the University of Idaho in 1986. Bate and his wife, Donna and three children, live in Twin Falls.
