Welcome to our Show!! The figure skating season is a long one to say the least! Our skaters seldom receive time away from the rink when they are constantly busy with practices, lessons, exhibitions, test sessions, and competitions. Some of our more advanced skaters are also high school hockey cheerleaders and Basic Skills coaches! After five months of hard work, combined with a winter that doesn’t always cooperate, our skaters definitely deserve a night to relax and have some fun! This show, and more importantly this program, would not exist without our talented skaters, supportive parents, generous volunteers, dedicated coaches, the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club, East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation and the city of East Grand Forks. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do. You truly make this program the success that it is! The annual ice show is the favorite part of the season for many of our skaters! The show gives them the rare opportunity to entertain their community and enjoy the sport they love without the pressures of competing and testing. They are excited to showcase the new skills they’ve learned this year and indulge in their artistic side. I sincerely hope that you enjoy our show! Please sit back and enjoy a well-deserved “Ladies Night”! Thank You! Beth Moe, NLFSC Coordinator
Welcome from East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation The city of East Grand Forks values the accomplishments and efforts of each of our individual skaters and synchronized teams. The figure skating program is a very vital activity to our community and we enjoy seeing it grow year after year. The Annual Ice Show takes a great deal of planning and organization. We salute the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club of East Grand Forks, all of the volunteers and the parents who put in countless hours and ultimately make this show possible. Without their hard work and dedication, it would not happen. We sincerely hope you enjoy the show and the talent of all of the skaters involved. Warmest Regards, Dave Aaker, East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation Superintendent Mark Dragich, East Grand Forks Parks and Recreation Supervisor
on behalf of the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club, it is with great pride in welcoming you to our 41st annual Ice Show! Tonight you will have the opportunity to see all the hard work and dedication that our skaters have invested throughout this past year. We have a wonderful group of individuals who will be showcasing their talents to a variety of songs themed after the female genre. We will have “SINGLE LADIES” with “HAPPY FEET” doing a little “CROCODILE ROCK.” Because it’s “LADIES NIGHT!” I do want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude for your undying support to our club. The Northern Lights Figure Skating Club has built a solid foundation from the commitment of so many involved and our success is because of our many supporters like you; past and present! To our skaters who spend countless hours on the ice; from early mornings to late nights, day after day! That takes an enormous amount of dedication and discipline! But they do it with great pride because of their love of figure skating! We are always proud of their continued determination! A “BIG” thank you to Beth Moe who joined NLFSC this year as our new Skating Director. I can’t say enough about her dedication to the future of this club. Beth has taken on an enormous amount of responsibility and has completed every task with pure optimism! Her passion for skating is evident in her work. May her vision for the future of our program take us to new heights! Our coaches, who share not only their love of skating with our girls but their experience as well! These coaches dedicate their time to teach and guide our skaters along the wonderful path of figure skating. We have an amazing staff of coaches on board who provide our skaters the necessary tools they need to succeed. Their dedication to this club does not go unnoticed. Parents, without you how could these kids be where they are today? You all deserve a round of applause for your undying efforts! First, for allowing your child this wonderful opportunity and second for your dedication to the sport as well, without you standing beside them, supporting them their experience would not be possible! And let’s not forget the countless volunteer hours you contribute to our program. You must know that this is such an essential piece to the growth and success of our club, for without you we clearly could not exist. The Parks & Recreation Department; Mark Dragich, Deb Hadden and Dave Aker for their unwavering support to our program. Garry Hadden, VFW Supervisor, thank you, thank you for always taking such good care of our arena. Your support to our club has been so appreciated throughout the years! You’re one of a kind! We will miss you tremendously and are so appreciative that we had the opportunity to work together, it has been so enjoyable! We wish you well on your retirement! Last, but not least our magnificent community for the outpouring of support to not just our club but to ALL of our area youth activities. I am a believer that together we are sure to make a difference in the lives of our youth. We thank you for sharing the evening with us; now let’s sit back, relax and ENJOY the show! Shawn Egeland, President, Northern Lights Figure Skating Club

Team North dakota Danielle Larson, Hanna Stevenson, Kate Copperud, Laurel Peabody, Kendra Nagle, Sarah Smith, Mallory Olson, Emilea Berhow & Kendra Gullickson
Team North Dakota was formed in the fall of 2012. The team was initially created as a student organization at the University Of North Dakota, which meant that all team members were to be students of UND. After further research, the decision was made to forgo the student organization route and instead create a collegiate team that any full-time student could participate in, regardless of what college he/she attended. The change brought forth the opportunity for students attending colleges in the surrounding areas to participate. The first season was a building year for the team. They did not compete, but instead focused their efforts on learning the rules and requirements, working together and most importantly building a name for the team. Their debut performance was Sunday, January 20th, 2013 at the Northern Star International Synchronized Skating Competition in East Grand Forks, MN. Their exhibition performance was received with overwhelming support from the community, the skaters and even the judges. The mission of Team North Dakota is to provide post-secondary athletes the opportunity to continue their skating careers with a team that values education, teamwork, sportsmanship and the advancement of synchronized skating.

A Tribute To Our Seniors
CLASS OF 2013 e Paig
Paige Vetter is the 18 year old daughter of Beth and Clarence Vetter and has been skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since she was four years old. When asked what she loved most about skating, Paige replied, “It’s a good way to get exercise, express yourself and be with your friends all at the same time.” Although she found it hard to choose just one, her favorite skating memories include her trips to the Red River Valley Classic competition in Moorhead, MN each February. Paige will miss skating in the Annual Ice Show, “the week leading up to the show is stressful, but it’s always so much fun and it’s all worth it once the show finally arrives,” she said. Paige would like to tell the younger skaters that practice makes perfect, having a positive attitude goes a long way and to remember to always have fun and enjoy your time on the ice. “There’s no point in skating if you don’t like it or if you aren’t having fun. Skating should definitely be fun!” Paige plans to attend the University of North Dakota in the fall and is undecided on a major at this point, but is leaning toward Business Administration or Psychology. She would like to pursue a career as a Health Unit Coordinator, Pediatrician or OBGYN.

Chandler Kallock is the 17 year old daughter of Rhonda and David Kallock and has been skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since the age of six. She knew she wanted to be a figure skater when she attended her first ice show at the age of five. “I saw all of the pretty skating dresses and decided I wanted to do that too!” Performing and the artistic expression of figure skating are the two things she loves the most about skating. Her favorite memory from her skating years is skating with her Dad when she was little. “My Dad would skate with me every night on an outdoor rink,” she told us. “He worked with me on my backward crossover for weeks!” Chandler will miss the excitement of competitions, being with her friends on the ice and having Melissa Olson and Jarmila Solc as her coaches. She would like to tell the younger skaters to have confidence on the ice and to always smile. Chandler plans to attend the University of North Dakota and major in Communications.
Lisa Yanish is the 17 year old daughter of Roberta and Tim Yanish and has been skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since she was seven years old. The Annual Ice Show is what Lisa loves most about skating. She enjoys skating with her friends in front of the crowd, “the atmosphere is so amazing,” she told us. Her favorite skating memory dates back to 8th grade when she traveled to Michigan for a competition with her synchronized skating team. She said her favorite part of the trip was competing, relaxing with her friends and stopping in Chicago to eat at the famous Ed Debevic’s restaurant. Lisa told us she will miss being a part of the Annual Ice Show because it is her favorite part of the year. “Never give up and always make it fun,” is the advice she gives to the younger skaters. She said learning new jumps and spins is difficult, but if you keep practicing you will get better. Lisa plans to attend Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks and is undecided on her major at this time. She is interested in the nursing program, but has yet to make a final decision. Lisa is looking forward to the years ahead, attending local competitions and, of course, the Ice Show!

y b l e h S Shelby Cash is the 18 year old daughter of Robin and Wally Cash and has been skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since she was four years old. Spending time with her friends and learning new and fun routines are the things that Shelby loves most about skating. When we asked her to choose a favorite skating memory she replied, “There are so many!” Somehow, hiding from the coaches in the boy’s bathroom, at the Civic, with the rest of the synchro team was the memory that stood out. When asked why they were hiding she replied, “So we wouldn’t have to run.” Shelby said she will miss absolutely everything about skating. “It has been my life, seven months out of the year for the past 14 years.” She would like to tell the younger skaters to act-out their artistic programs, make memories and “enjoy every moment you get on that ice!” Shelby would like to express a heartfelt thank you to “all you mommies” for taking care of her and treating her like one of your own. She would also like to thank everyone for supporting her through the years, “I love you all!” Shelby plans to attend Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks and enroll in the nursing program.
Jordyn Weber is the 18 year old daughter of Nicole and Troy Weber and has been skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since she was just three years old. Jordyn loves all of the people involved in skating, not just her fellow skaters, but the parents and coaches as well. Her favorite memory is from the 2012 Red River Valley Synchronized Skating Classic Competition in Moorhead when the Metallites bested both the Bismarck and Border Blades teams. Jordyn told us she will really miss synchronized skating, especially her team, and the feeling she gets on competition day, “There is nothing better.” She would like all of the younger skaters to have fun and get involved. “The memories you make in skating are going to stay with you forever!” She would like to thank everyone that supported her throughout her skating career, “I’m going to miss you all.” Jordyn is currently keeping her options open and has not made any permanent decisions regarding her future plans.
Ellie
Ellie Akerlind is the 18 year old daughter of Susan and Chuck Akerlind and has been skating since she was two years old and skating with the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club since the age of four. Ellie said she loves skating because, “You can learn something new everyday. No matter what jumps you can land or how many spins you know, you can always learn more.” Her favorite skating memories include skating in the opening ceremonies of the 2003 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships when the NLFSC hosted the event at the Ralph Engelstad Arena and the day she passed her fourth and final Gold dance test and earned the title of ‘U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalist’. She will miss the synchro trips with the Metallites and her weekly lessons with her coach, Jarmila Solc. Ellie’s advice to the younger skaters is to listen to your coaches, practice, and never give up! “Thank you to the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club for everything you have done. Without you, I would not be the skater or person I am today.” Ellie plans to attend Northland Community and Technical College in East Grand Forks and enroll in the nursing program. She would like to pursue a career in neonatal nursing. Ellie plans on trying out for the North Dakota Collegiate Synchronized Skating Team and continuing to coach with the NLFSC.
Congratulations Skaters!! The title of ‘United States Figure Skating Gold Medalist’ is the highest honor a skater can achieve. One earns this title by passing the Gold Dance test, Senior Moves in the Field test or the Senior Freeskate test. Years of training, dedication and hard work go into passing these tests and many skaters never achieve the honor. This year, the Northern Lights Figure Skating Club is proud to have not one, but three skaters become U.S. Figure Skating Gold Medalists! Ellie Akerlind passed her fourth and final Gold Dance test on December 8, 2012 and passed her Senior Moves in the Field test on March 9, 2013 becoming a double gold medalist.
