INTRODUCTION

Welcome to our winter issue of ‘The Collection, Montenegro’. This is the time of year to look back to what we have achieved, whilst taking an optimistic view ahead and wonder - what will 2019 bring? 2018 was certainly a record-breaker and a year of significant achievements and accomplishments for our country. In the words of the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Mr Duško Marković new records were set in the tourism industry, and this period can truly be considered a golden age of Montenegrin tourism. In the first nine months of 2018, we were visited by more than 2 million tourists, which is 9.5 percent more guests compared to the same period last year. 25 new hotels were opened in 2018 - of which more than half are 4 and 5-star hotels. Such a boost to the hotel industry sector during 2018 generated more than 1000 new jobs. Prime Minister Marković also highlighted the fact that more than 60 construction permits for new 4 or 5-star hotels totalling investments worth more than 400 million euros have been issued. “I am extremely satisfied with the timetable of the major projects in tourism: Porto Montenegro, Luštica Bay, Portonovi and also a series of smaller, equally good initiatives. In the Bay of Kotor, these are hotels of the Iberostar chain in Njivice and Perast, Hotel Lazure in Meljine, and also the hotels in Ulcinj, such as the Karisma Group project at Velika Plaža Beach. The Government is also investing in the tourist capacities in the north of our country By the end of 2020, around 70 million euros will have been invested to improve region”, said Prime Minister Marković. Also, in 2018, according to the information available to ‘The Collection, Montenegro’, mixed-use resorts, such as Porto Montenegro and Luštica Bay, have had the highest number of unit sales transactions compared to similar projects, in the entire Mediterranean, which is major encouragement for the whole local industry. Looking forward to 2019, the launch of Montenegro’s ‘Citizenship by Investment’ programme is eagerly awaited. Personally, I had the very educational opportunity to attend the 12th Global Residence and Citizenship Conference in Dubai in November, organised

by the renowned company ‘Henley & Partners’. The Keynote Speaker at the conference was the President of Montenegro, Mr Milo Đukanović, who addressed the matter of the proposed programme. Mr Đukanović stated that: “The vital national interest of Montenegro is to implement the Programme in such a way that, by using the experience of other countries, we eliminate all risks which might occur from its implementation. The Programme will allow only those persons with proven credibility, both personal and professional, to apply, and will allow an inflow of funds with an indisputably legal origin. I expect that the Programme will have strong multiplicative effects on the general economy, and become a significant source of income and a platform for new investment. With a well-designed campaign, it will be possible to attract the attention of respectable business people who would be willing to relocate their businesses. This would not only increase the number of investments, but also improve the image of our country and raise business standards”, said Mr Đukanović. As for our own plans, after successfully completing 23 issues of our magazine in Montenegro, we felt that it was time to look regionally. It is our pleasure to announce that the first issue of the magazine ‘The Collection, Serbia’, will be launched in spring 2019, with much appreciated support from the National Tourism Organisation of Serbia. Preliminary contacts with potential advertisers have been very successful. If you have a desire to advertise your company in our new venture, please contact us. Of course, ultimately, our success to date is the result of our local partnerships and we owe our sincere gratitude to our advertisers, who are helping us maintain and improve the high level of quality you are used to, issue after issue. INTRODUCTION

Уважаемые читатели, Добро пожаловать в зимний номер нашего журнала «The Collection, Montenegro». В этот период мы оглядываемся на достижения уходящего года, а также с интересом смотрим вперёд. Что же нам принесёт Новый 2019 год? 2018 год, конечно, побил многочисленные рекорды и стал важным годом, когда речь идёт об экономических показателях в Черногории. Как сообщил председатель Правительства Черногории г-н Душко Маркович, новые рекорды установлены в сфере туристической индустрии, а этот период мы, действительно, можем назвать золотыми годами черногорского туризма. Наша туристическая отрасль в первые девять месяцев текущего года, побив все прошлогодние рекорды, зафиксировала посещение свыше 2 миллионов туристов, что представляет рост в 9,5 процентов по сравнению с тем же периодом прошлого года. Только в этом году открыто 25 новых гостиничных объектов, из которых больше половины имеют категорию 4 и 5 звёзд. Такой окрепший сектор гостиничной индустрии лишь в течение 2018 года генерировал свыше 1000 новых рабочих мест. Председатель Правительства Маркович, говоря о туризме, упомянул и тот факт, что за прошедшие два года мандата Правительства Министерство устойчивого развития и туризма выдало свыше 60 разрешений на строительство новых отелей с 4 и 5 звёздами. «Переведя всё в цифры, мы можем говорить об инвестициях, составляющих сумму свыше 400 миллионов евро», - сказал премьер-министр. «По этому поводу не могу не высказать удовлетворение динамикой, которая наблюдается в развитии грандиозных туристических проектов: Порто Монтенегро, Луштица Бэй, Портонови, а также ряде не таких крупных, но таких же качественных инициатив. В Боко-Которском заливе это отели сети Иберостар в Нивицах и Перасте, отель Лазуре в Мелинах, как и отели в Улцине – проекты группы Каризма на Великой плаже. Но Правительство инвестирует средства и в туристические проекты на Севере нашей страны. До конца 2020 года в этот регион будет инвестировано около 70 миллионов евро», - сообщил председатель Правительства. Кроме того, в 2018 году согласно информации журнала «The Collection, Montenegro» курорты mixed-used, такие как Порто Монтенегро и Луштица Бэй, отметили самое большое количество трансакций по сравнению с проектами такого типа во всём Средиземноморье, что, действительно, представляет огромный стимул для всей индустрии. В ожидании 2019 года одной из важнейших новостей стал, конечно же, черногорский проект «Citizenship by Investmen», который ожидали с нетерпением. Лично я имел прекрасную возможность присутствовать на 12 Глобальной конференции по вопросам постоянного места жительства и гражданства (12th Global Residence and Citizenship Conference), которую авторитетная компания Henley & Partners организовала в Дубае в ноябре. Основным докладчиком на конференции стал президент Черногории г-н Мило Джюканович, который в своём выступлении подчеркнул: «Витальный национальный интерес Черногории – имплементировать Программу таким образом, чтобы, используя опыт других стран, элиминировать все риски, которые могут возникнуть в процессе её применения. Программа позволит подать прошение о принятии в гражданство исключительно лицам, имеющим безупречную репутацию в личном и профессиональном смысле и разрешит прилив средств, имеющих бесспорное законное происхождение. Мы ожидаем, что Программа будет иметь значительный мультипликативный эффект на общее состояние экономики, станет важным источником дохода и платформой для новых инвестиций. Благодаря хорошо продуманной компании появится возможность привлечь внимание авторитетных деловых людей, которые согласились бы на реаллокацию главных офисов своего бизнеса. Таким образом, мы бы не только увеличили сумму инвестиций, но и улучшили имидж нашей страны, повысив стандарты ведения бизнеса», сказал президент Джюканович. Что касается наших планов, после успешно реализованного 23 номера в Черногории мы посчитали, что необходимо попробовать и с региональной инициативой. С удовольствием мы объявляем о первом номере журнала «The Collection, Serbia», который при поддержке Туристической организации Сербии должен появиться в 2019 году. Uvaženi čitaoci, Želimo vam dobrodošlicu u zimski broj našeg časopisa ‘The Collection, Montenegro’. Ovo je doba godine, kada se osvrćemo na dostignuća u godini koja je na izmaku, a takođe, sa uzbuđenjem gledamo naprijed. Šta će nam to donijeti Nova 2019? 2018. je svakako oborila brojne rekorde i bila značajna godina u domenu ekonomskih pokazatelja u Crnoj Gori. Kako je saopštio Predsjednik Vlade Crne Gore g. Duško Marković novi rekordi su postavljeni u turističkoj industriji, a ovaj period zaista možemo nazvati zlatnim godinama crnogorskog turizma. Naša turistička privreda za prvih devet mjeseci ove godine prebacila je prošlogodišnje rekorde i bilježi posjetu od preko 2 miliona turista, što predstavlja rast od 9,5 procenata u odnosu na isti period prošle godine. Samo u ovoj godini otvoreno je 25 novih hotelskih objekata od čega više od polovine sa 4 i 5 zvjezdica. Tako osnažen sektor hotelske industrije samo u toku 2018. godine generisao je preko 1000 novih radnih mjesta. Premijer Marković je, govoreći o turizmu, pomenuo i činjenicu da je u protekle dvije godine mandata Vlade Ministarstvo održivog razvoja i turizma izdalo više od 60 građevinskih dozvola za nove hotele sa četiri ili pet zvjezdica. „Prevedeno u cifre, govorimo o ulaganjima od preko 400 miliona Eura“, rekao je premijer. „Ne mogu a da ovom prilikom ne iskažem zadovoljstvo dinamikom kojom se odvijaju grandiozni projekti u turizmu: Porto Montenegro, Luštica Bay, Portonovi, ali i niz manjih, podjednako kvalitetnih inicijativa. U Bokokotorskom zalivu to su hoteli lanca Iberostar na Njivicama i u Perastu, i hotel Lazure u Meljinama, ali i oni u Ulcinju, kakav je projekat grupacije Karisma na Velikoj plaži. No, Vlada ulaže i sredstva u turističke kapacitete na Sjeveru naše zemlje. Do kraja 2020. godine tamo će biti investirano oko 70 miliona Eura“, kazao je predsjednik Vlade. Dodatno, u 2018. prema informacija časopisa ‘The Collection, Montenegro’, mixed-used resorti, kao što su Porto Montenegro i Luštica Bay, zabilježili su najveći broj transakcija u poređenju sa projektima ovog tipa na čitavom Mediteranu, što zaista predstavlja veliko ohrabrenje za čitavu industriju. U susret 2019-oj jedna od važnih vijesti svakako jeste crnogorski ‘Citizenship by Investment’ program koji se željno iščekivao. Ja lično, imao sam lijepu priliku da prisustvujem 12. Globalnoj konferenciji o rezidentnosti i državljanstvu (12th Global Residence and Citizenship Conference), koju je renomirana kompanija Henley & Partners organizovala u Dubaiju u novembru mjesecu. Keynote Speaker na Konferenciji bio je Predsjednik Crne Gore g. Milo Đukanović koji je, u svom obraćanju, između ostalog, istakao: “Vitalni nacionalni interes Crne Gore je da implementira Program na način da, koristeći iskustva drugih zemalja, eliminiše sve rizike koje može donijeti njegova primjena. Program će omogućiti aplikacije samo onim licima koja imaju dokazan kredibilitet u ličnom i profesionalnom smislu, i dozvoliti priliv sredstava koja imaju neupitno legalno porijeklo. Očekujem da Program ima snažne multiplikativne efekte na ukupnu ekonomiju, da postane značajan izvor prihoda i platforma za nove investicije. Uz dobro osmišljenu kampanju moguće je privući pažnju uglednih poslovnih ljudi koji bi prihvatili da izvrše realokaciju sjedišta svojih biznisa. Time bismo ne samo povećali iznos investicija, već i poboljšali imidž naše zemlje i podigli standarde poslovanja”, kazao je predsjednik Đukanović. Što se tiče naših planova, nakon uspješno realizovana 23. broja u Crnoj Gori, smatrali smo da treba pokušati i regionalnu inicijativu. Sa zadovoljstvom najavljujemo prvi broj magazina ‘The Collection, Serbia’, koji bi, uz podršku Turističke organizacije Srbije, trebalo da se pojavi na proljeće 2019. godine. Preliminarni kontakti sa potencijalnim oglašivačima više su nego uspješni, tako da se zaista nadamo da ćemo realizovati ovu ideju. A BRIEF HISTORY

The location of Iberostar Grand Perast, with its breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor, is undoubtedly one of the hotel’s finest attractions.

The picturesque town of Perast, in Montenegro, site of the Iberostar Grand Perast, has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979, encompassing some of the finest examples of Baroque architecture to be seen on the Adriatic coast. Buildings and streets retain their original appearance, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, transporting visitors back to the days when the Venetian Republic took control of this city, and whose influence would leave a mark that is still clearly in evidence today.

ver the centuries, two key factors have defined the city’s urban layout: the historical need to defend its walls; and the Romanesque holy buildings that nestle within the walled enclosure. Due to its strategic border location, Perast was destined to play a crucial political role, making the most of the economic and administrative advantages provided by the Venetian Government. Indeed, during the Middle Ages, it was home to no fewer than 12 noble families. A prime maritime location and close connections with Venice were two of the reasons that led the Italian city to contribute to the creation of a fleet based locally in Perast. The objectives were to boost trade and provide better protection from attacks by the Barbary pirates. In fact, the sailors and

merchants of this small town in Montenegro were internationally renowned not only for their trading know-how, but also for their military skills in times of conflict. Indeed, their feats earned them the honour of safeguarding the Venetian flag featuring the Lion of Saint Mark in times of war. One of the consequences of this long-standing experience and seafaring tradition was the choice of Perast as the site for construction of the first maritime academy in the Balkans, on the orders of Marko Martinović himself, a prominent naval figure and one of the city’s most illustrious historical figures.

The location of the Iberostar Grand Perast, with its breathtaking views of the Bay of Kotor, is undoubtedly one of the hotel’s finest attractions. It is also an ideal base while exploring several areas in Montenegro and boasts excellent communications, just 60 km from Dubrovnik International Airport in Croatia and 20 km from Tivat Airport, in Montenegro. Standing practically next door to the hotel is the Church of Saint Mark, built in 1760 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as well as a number of saints including Saint Ann, Saint Mathew and Saint Mark the Evangelist. Guests staying at the Iberostar Grand Perast will have fun trying to spot the winged lion with an open book in its paws, one of the symbols of Perast featured over the door. them a series of tax privileges. Perast is located close to two islands: Saint Jorge and Gospa od Škrpjela. The former, which is also known as Sveti Đorđe Island, is the site of the Church of Saint George, which was first mentioned in 1166 in a series of documents describing the consecration of the new and second Roman Church of Saint Tryphon in Kotor. This monument, an authentic historical treasure, houses paintings dating back to 1326 and 1457, including a work by the famous Kotor-born artist Lovro Marinov Dobričević. The second island, Gospa od Škrpjela, lies just 115 metres north-east of the Island of Saint George. This artificial site boasts magical origins: legend has it that in 1452, on their return home, a number of sailors claimed that they had seen an image of the Virgin Mary on the site of the current island. The residents of Perast decided to create the island by sinking disused boats, and later built a church there that dates back to 1630. Just like the Island of Saint George, it is home to several precious artworks, including sketches inside the church drawn by a famous local artist, Tripo Kokolja, who was also born in the town. In addition to its magnificent architecture and history, the old town of Perast boasts a wealth of other attractions. Fashion lovers must not miss a tour of the Jadran Perast factory, built in 1936. A pioneering industry back in the 1950s and 1960s, which employed around 800 workers and was a major driving force for the town’s economy and welfare.

ABOUT THE HOTEL BUILDING

The noble families inhabiting Perast include the Smekja or Smecchia family. Their stately home dates back to the mid-18th century and is an authentic work of art that is impossible to miss, as it is the largest palace in the area. Since 2018, this building has housed the Iberostar Grand Perast hotel. The palace was built with stone from the Croatian island of Korčula, the same material that was used for the neighbouring Church of Saint Mark. Petar Smekja, the family patriarch, was a successful merchant who contributed to forging economic ties between the Baltic countries and Venice in the mid-18th century. He was rewarded with the title of ‘Count’ and in 1779 became a member of Perast’s nobility. The palace comprises two parts, differentiated by the periods in which they were completed. The oldest section, which dates back to 1764, stands between the sea and the old road. The remaining sections are more recent, and although construction work commenced in 1764, the building was not considered to be complete until the 1930s. One of the most noteworthy elements on the façade is the Smejka family coat of arms, represented by a hand holding the stem of a plant with stars. Furthermore, the entire building bears the hallmarks of traditional coastal architecture, including an arch-shaped cross that joins the two sections that form this stunning palace. All in all, it is the magnificent setting that makes the Iberostar Grand Perast an ideal hotel, thanks to

The popularity of craft beer among the lovers of this alcoholic beverage has been growing rapidly over the past several years. Craft beer is not a status symbol nor a fad – the popularity is driven by the desire to enjoy real beer. While constantly striving to reduce expenses, the beer industry has become more and more automatised and standardised, affecting the end-product, which often resembles a chemical formula.

hat is why many beer lovers around the world are turning to their local craft breweries, who brew their beer according to the simple recipe which has existed for several millennia – mixing hops, yeast, barley and water. The basic difference between craft beer and industrial beer is the richness of flavour and the quality of beer. Craft breweries are only partially automatised, and the beer is produced in a traditional way, with special attention to raw materials, all in order to produce a higher quality. In the very heart of Podgorica, the first Montenegrin craft brewery – PG Beer Academy – was opened a year ago. They produce the best craft beer before the eyes of beer lovers who can taste these magnificent brews in the restaurant of PG Beer Academy. They offer India Pale Ale, Weizen, Lager Bier, Dark Lager and many other styles; all created using the latest technology, in compliance with the highest standards. In one year, we produced more than 200,000 litres of beer and have around 10 different beer styles, including traditional German, Belgian, and American styles, and some originals as well. We are proud of the 6 medals we won at the Food and Beverage Fair in Novi Sad, which demonstrates the quality of our product, and of the organisation of the first Craft Beer Oktoberfest, held across Montenegro. The 5 beers from the standard offer also have characteristic names – Profesor Doktor (PhD), Brat Dekan (My brother, the dean), Vječiti Apsolvent (Eternal final-year student), Čista Desetka (Grade A) and Vrhunski Magistar (Expert Master of Arts). The interior of PG Beer Academy is also very interesting being made from wood, rock and metal. Visitors have the remarkable possibility to see the whole brewery and witness the ‘cooking’ process, while enjoying their favourite beer. Prema riječima direktora PG Akademije piva, Danila Pavličića, jedan od mnogobrojnih razloga zbog kojih je nastala ova kraft pivara jeste želja da omogući sugrađanima da podignu nivo uživanja u hrani i piću. Oni proizvode najbolje kraft pivo pred očima ljubitelja piva koji odmah mogu i da ga probaju u restoranu PG Akademija piva. PG Akademija piva je proizvela preko 200.000 litara i desetak različitih stilova piva, od tradicionalnih njemačkih, belgijskih i američkih, pa do nekih originalnih. U ponudi su India Pale Ale, Weizen, Lager Bier, Dark Lager, kao i mnoga druga piva - nastala u najsavremenijim pogonima i proizvedena po najvišim standardima. et on the waterfront of the Marina Village in the coastal town of Luštica Bay, the hotel, as well as the modern marina, were officially opened in August with a spectacular Grand Opening ceremony. The event welcomed The Chedi brand and the town’s new harbour to Montenegro’s shores and brought together 1,600 guests for an evening of unforgettable celebration. Held on the new marina promenade in front of The Chedi hotel, a huge multimedia stage rose above the waters, while the surrounding buildings of the Marina Village were lit up by a mesmerising light show. The evening brought together performers from all over the world, from folk dancers to a traditional marching band to mythical mountain and sea fairies. One of disco’s greatest bands of all times took to the stage for an unforgettable show and Operosa festival’s Electro Opera played a powerful set combining operatic classics with electronic beats. Guests dined and danced until the early hours, enjoying a laser show and magical firework display above the shimmering Adriatic waters below. The hotel was officially inaugurated with a ceremony that saw the last three stones of construction symbolically brought together by Samih Sawiris, The President of the Board of Directors and the

owner of Orascom Development Holding, together with Prime Minister Duško Marković, and Johan Beerlandt, the President of the Board of Directors of the Belgian Besix Group. The speech from Prime Minister Marković recognised the significance of the hotel to Montenegro who cited that "The crown of the present work is the celebration of the opening of The Chedi Hotel together with part of this marina that will further position our country on the map of elite nautical tourism in the Mediterranean”. One of the largest luxury hotels in Boka Bay, The Chedi Luštica Bay is set to make touristic waves. The hotel encompasses 111 rooms including 60 condominium suites, two restaurants, a lobby bar, a ballroom, conference and business facilities, an outdoor heated pool, spa and fitness centre with indoor heated pool, sauna, steam bath, experience shower, a gym and a range of enticing resort shops. Established in Asia and the Far East, this is the Chedi brand’s second European venture, following the award-winning The Chedi Andermatt in Switzerland. Alongside the Marina Village, the hotel takes inspiration from the traditional architecture of Montenegro’s medieval coastal towns. Local materials of wood and stone, elegant arches, shuttered windows, terracotta roofs and breathable interiors align to create a retreat that is rooted in its surroundings; that simply belongs. Conceptualised by award-winning architects TVSDesign Atlanta (USA), the hotel encompasses a myriad of connected buildings: a stunning central building, green-roofed hotel rooms behind and condominiums to the side. The village-like set up feels remarkably modern – a network of indooroutdoor spaces and gathering areas in which to work, socialise, eat and drink. The lobby’s entrance is floor-to-ceiling glass, entirely open to the aquamarine waters beyond. Designed by the acclaimed GG&Grace the interiors combine coastal colours with light stone, wooden beams, rugged marble and vibrant cerulean furnishings. Behind the reception desk a wooden panel is etched with horizontal layers of texture and colour that reference the mountainous horizon as the sun sets behind. Like natural spaces, the interiors are meant to be lived in. From wicker hanging chairs in the lobby to an indoor tree in the spa, guests are intended to touch, enjoy and experience their surroundings. State-of-the-art facilities and smart tech are integrated seamlessly, designed to enhance rather than impede relaxation. There are Tesla charging points for electric vehicles, the first in Montenegro. The

business and events centre has all the latest high tech, including 65” Ultra LED screens and audio systems with instant networking and streaming capabilities. Gym equipment monitor displays are synced with soundtracks to increase motivation. In-room technology is helpfully intuitive. The smart television set already knows the nationality of the guest and will configure itself accordingly. The light systems have memory settings to record guests’ preferences. Guests can stream from their device or phone onto the TV and there are USB phone chargers next to every bed, as well as a master switch so you don’t have to get up to turn off that one last light. With the smallest room at 45 square metres, they are spacious and replete with little comforts. Luxurious Simmons Sweet Sleeper beds are adorned with high thread Egyptian cotton sheets. Each room has a fully-stocked refreshment centre with a local wine selection and a luxury Illy espresso machine. The bathrooms come with underfloor heating, double vanity sinks and high powdered rain showers or indulgent Laufen bathtubs. Every room comes with its own balcony looking out over the peninsula or sea, where guests can forget that anything exists except the dreamy vistas. The two on-site restaurants are both overseen by executive chef Steven Grande. Having honed his craft at many of the world’s top resorts, including the Strand Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar, and Le Touessrok in Mauritius, Steven has created sophisticated, modern menus that sing with the freshness of local Montenegrin ingredients. Can you tell us more about your journey to success? A. Mr. Predrag Lešić: .ME is a domain with distinctive appeal that is ideal for any individual or company looking to add personal flavour to their online identity. As such, the domain is very marketable and equally attractive to web savvy professionals, startups and established companies. However, we still had to stand out amongst hundreds of other domain extensions and explain to the global audience why .ME was a better choice than any other domain, which was not an easy task in a B2B industry. I would say that one key element of our success was the decision to market; not only to traditional business partners such as domain and hosting companies, but also to end-customers; that had never been done before. Also, the proactive approach to the growth of domain registration channels and penetrating new markets is what sets us apart from other Registry Operators. We literally spent months in China and India talking to our partners

and coming up with market-specific sales and marketing strategies. A. .ME is a resource of the country of Montenegro and we feel that we need to give back to the community. This is why we adopted a long-term corporate and social responsibility strategy from the very launch. Our focus is on investment in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education, development of startup ecosystem’s and raising awareness about business opportunities which the digital age creates. I can proudly say that to date we have invested over €1million into different CSR activities in Montenegro. Q. What are the main CSR projects which doMEn d.o.o. supports? A. Our main CSR projects are the School of Programming (an activity we started ten years ago that was attended by more than 1,000 children from Montenegro), the Knowledge Olympiad for Montenegrin students, our FIRST Lego League (where kids from elementary schools learn about engineering by assembling and programming autonomous THE COLLECTION

THE LEGEND – SIR MALCOLM CAMPBELL, KING OF SPEED

Known as the “King of Speed”, in 1935, Sir Malcolm Campbell became the first man to break 300 mph (482 km/h) at the wheel of his famous Bluebird on the Bonneville Salt Flats. From 1930 onwards, Campbell had been wearing a Rolex Oyster, and it was on his wrist during this record-breaking exploit. He thus became the first Rolex Testimonee in motor sport; the race adopted the name Rolex and the watch the name of Daytona. William France, Sr, a great admirer of Sir Malcolm Campbell, wore a Rolex. He appeared in an advertisement for the brand in the early 1960s mentioning Rolex as the Official Timepiece of the Daytona International Speedway. The specific design of Montenegrin jewellery stems from the role of Montenegro throughout history, as well as from the geographic location of the territory that constitutes the present-day Montenegro state.

The history of Montenegrin jewellery is connected to the development of jewellery in the wider region of the Balkans. However, Montenegrin jewellery is distinguished by unique features. The specific design of Montenegrin jewellery stems from the role of Montenegro throughout history, as well as from the geographic location of the territory that constitutes the present-day state of Montenegro. A large part of the territory extends along the Adriatic coast, forming an integral part of the Mediterranean region, with permanent and extensive links to Western European culture.

T

he independence and liberty of Montenegrin inland territory during the expansion of the Ottoman Empire across the Balkans, enabled preservation of their traditions, including influences of the Byzantine culture. On the other hand, the proximity of territories conquered by the Ottomans led to an adoption of some influences of oriental Levantine art. All that, together with the special culture of the people, brought about a specific style of clothing to Montenegro, inevitably complemented with appropriate jewellery. The main centre of producing silver objects and jewellery was in the town of Kotor, situated in Boka Bay. There, in the Middle Ages, luxurious and expensive jewellery was made on the commission of

noblemen and particularly rich merchants from the Balkan inland regions. After the medieval cultural enthusiasm and burgeoning of all arts, conditions in the Balkans declined considerably with the advent of Ottomans in the late 14th century. While crafting the most luxurious jewellery for high nobility ceased; the production of more modest, rustic jewellery continued. This is evident from the remarkable diversity and beauty of ethnographic jewellery from the 18th and 19th centuries, worn along with the national costume. The Montenegrin festive national costume was exceptionally elegant. The most prominent pieces of garment, such as the vest 'jelek', the short jacket 'coret', and the long sleevless overcoat 'zubun', were made from luxurious fabrics: felt, velvet, and silk. They were edged with golden braids and decorated with fine and sumptuous golden thread. This kind of embroidery is known as 'srma'. Together with the festive national costume, women wore jewellery which enhanced the glamour and beauty of the garment – the jewellery was made of silver or gold-plated silver, and rarely of gold. Common jewellery techniques included casting, forging, embossing, and engraving, but the most prominent among them was filigree. Local jewellers were exceptionally skilful in the latter technique. The importance of the technique was exemplified by the fact that apprentices were obliged to make an elaborate piece of filigree jewellery in order to pass the exam for a qualified craftsman. Filigree technique consists of modelling a fine silver wire forming

small circles, spirals, flowers, lozenges and other shapes; which all together form an entire piece of jewellery, such as a bracelet, ring, brooch, pendant or even the whole woman's belt. The jewellery was decorated with semi-precious stones, corals, turquoises, and glass paste insets resembling gemstones. The shape of the jewellery had a symbolic meaning and specific powers were attributed to the materials. Thus, the circle of a bracelet, earring, or ring was a symbol of eternity. There was a widespread belief that silver protected from bewitchment; coral ameliorated health; and turquoise protected from an evil eye. Women were particularly keen on their long hair as the most beautiful natural ornament on their head. A favourite hairstyle was a braid wrapped around the head, fixed and adorned with a few silver hairpins, each decorated with a filigree globe. Similarly shaped were the round silver buttons – a favourite ornament of Montenegrin national costume – both for women and men. Buttons were sewn onto vests, on both sides, owing to their decorative rather than functional role. One of the rare examples of men's jewellery were the filigree silver cufflinks. Hands were decorated with various bracelets of which the typical form for the Balkans was the 'belenzuka' bracelet. This consisted of several silver chains held together by a large rectangular filigree clasp, embellished with glass paste insets of different colours. Such a bracelet was gifted by a boy to a girl as a token of love and a promise of marriage. The bride would wear it with pride and joy on the wedding day as an essential ornament of her wedding dress. Rings always had a special role amongst jewellery as being a symbol of status; serving as a seal as well as being connected to engagements and wedding customs. One of the medieval type of rings was called a 'stolovat'. Part of its name, 'sto', means 'table'. A ring of this type used to be worn by a leading male figure who was head of the family, and the host, when family and friends were gathered around a table. It was a massive ring in a rosette form, emerging from the Middle Ages, and remained popular until the end of the 19th century. Over time it became a woman's type of jewellery, in more delicate form, often further embellished with a red coral. MONTENEGRO

The most fascinating type of Montenegrin jewellery was the belt known as 'ćemer'. A belt was a very important piece of jewellery in the Middle Ages. In the past it was a status symbol of rulers, aristocrats, and knights, but in the 18th and 19th centuries it became predominantly a woman's type of jewellery connected to the owner's marital status. The bride would wear it on her wedding day as the most opulent ornament of her dress, as well as ever after, on special occasions with her national costume. The belt was kept as an important family treasure due to its value, and passed from mother to daughter over generations. "Ćemer" consists of three or five silver plates, with the central one of arch shape. It could have been made of forged silver or in filigree technique. It was often decorated with glass paste insets, and with gilded details. On its front side, 'ćemer' usually had a few hanging silver chains adding to the overall lavish effect. Silver 'ćemer' used to be worn with a colourful woven belt fixed on the backside. The fact that 'ćemer' was often decorated with a two-headed eagle with a crown - the coat of arms of Montenegro – reflects the significance people attributed to this piece of jewellery.

CRNOGORSKI NAKIT – ljepota i elegancija u tradiciji jednog naroda Specifičan dizajn crnogorskog nakita povezan je sa ulogom Crne Gore koju je ona imala tokom istorije, kao i sa geografskim položajem teritorije koja danas čini savremenu državu Crnu Goru. Glavni centar za izradu predmeta od srebra i nakita bio je grad Kotor. U srednjem vijeku, u Kotoru se izrađivao skupocjeni i luksuzan nakit po porudžbinama plemstva i posebno imućnih trgovaca iz zaleđa Balkana. Tehnike izrade nakita bile su livenje, kovanje, iskucavanje i graviranje, dok je među njima najistaknutije mjesto zauzimao filigran. Oblik nakita često je imao simbolično značenje, a materijalima od kojih je bio izrađivan pripisivale su se posebne moći. Krug narukvice, minđuše i prstena bio je simbol vječnosti. U narodu se vjerovalo da srebro štiti od uroka, da koral poboljšava zdravlje, a da tirkiz štiti od urokljivih pogleda. Jedan od srednjevjekovnih tipova prstena koji su se pojavili zvao se „stolovat“ – ovaj prsten je nosio muškarac, koji je bio glava porodice i domaćin prilikom svečanosti, kada su porodica i prijatelji bili okupljeni oko stola. Ubrzo je postao ženski tip nakita, nešto delikatnijeg oblika i često ukrašen crvenim koralom. Žene su svoju dugu kosu, koja se nosila kao pletenica uvijena oko glave, ukrašavale srebrnim iglama za kosu sa ukrasom u obliku filigranske kuglice na vrhu. Sličnog oblika bila su okrugla srebrna dugmad, veoma omiljena i kod žena i kod muškaraca. Ona su se prišivala na jelek, i to sa obije strane, imajući dekorativnu, a ne funkcionalnu ulogu. Ruke su se ukrašavale raznovrsnim narukvicama, a tip karakterističan za Balkan bila je narukvica pod nazivom „belenzuka“. Ona se sastojala od više srebrnih lančića, spojenih velikom pravougaonom filigranskom kopčom, dekorisanom umecima od raznobojne staklene paste. ЧЕРНОГОРСКИЕ ЮВЕЛИРНЫЕ ИЗДЕЛИЯ – красота и элегантность в традиции народа Специфический дизайн черногорских ювелирных изделий тесно связан с ролью Черногории в истории, а также с географическим положением территории, которая в настоящее время является территорией современного государства Черногории. Главным центром производства изделий из серебра и ювелирных украшений был город Котор. В средние века в Которе изготавливались дорогие и роскошные ювелирные украшения на заказ аристократии, особенно состоятельных купцов из соседних стран Балкан. Использовались такие техники, как литьё, ковка, чеканка и гравировка, в то время как наиболее заметное место среди них занимала филигрань. Форма украшений часто имела символическое значение, а материалам, из которых они изготавливались, приписывались особые свойства. Круг браслета, серьги и кольца символизировал вечность. В народе существовало поверье, что серебро защищает от проклятий, кораллы улучшают состояние здоровья, а бирюза защищает от сглаза. Один из видов колец, появившихся в средневековье, назывался «столоват» - такое кольцо носил мужчина, считавшийся главой семьи и хозяином во время торжеств, когда семья и друзья собирались за столом. Вскоре появился и женский тип ювелирных изделий, более деликатной формы, часто украшенный красными кораллами. Женщины свои длинные волосы, которые они заплетали в косу и обматывали вокруг головы, украшали серебряными иглами для волос с украшением в форме филигранного шара на конце. Похожей формы были и округлые серебряные пуговицы, которые пользовались успехом как у женщин, так и у мужчин. Они пришивались на жилет с обеих сторон и имели декоративную функцию. Руки украшались разнообразными браслетами, а характерным для Балкан типом был браслет, который назывался «белензука». Он состоял из нескольких серебряных цепочек, соединённых большой прямоугольной филигранной застёжкой, украшенной вкраплениями разноцветной стеклянной пасты. "Performing at Carnegie Hall in a solo concert debut at the age of 23 is a real challenge but also a privilege. "

Even at the young age of 23, Montenegrin Tamara Rađenović is making quite a name for herself as a soprano on the world stage. Tamara graduated from the Royal College of Music in London and has been awarded a scholarship to complete her master’s degree there. She had her opera role debut last year at the Mediterranean Opera Festival in Sicily, Italy as Mimi in Puccini’s opera La Boheme. During a flying visit home to Podgorica, Miloš Duletić from The Collection, Montenegro met the delightful Tamara to hear more about her life and exciting future plans.

Q

. The Collection, Montenegro: You had a great opportunity to attend master classes of the famous Montserrat Caballé and to perform at her gala concerts twice in Saragossa as one of the ‘twelve best voices’ elite selection. To what extent and in what manner has her mentorship influenced you? A. Tamara Rađenović: It was a great honor for me to be part of the Monsterrat Caballé’s masterclasses and Gala concerts in 2014 and 2015. Not only did it give me such a wonderful experience but it also opened my eyes towards my goals. I knew that if I was recognised by an artist like Madame Caballé is on the international stage, I should definitely keep my strongest desire to reach all of my dreams in this profession. After the opportunities I had been given in Saragossa, I was visiting Madame Caballé at her home in Barcelona where I learnt and heard lots of important things about this profession and

artistry. Probably the dearest to me was to listen to myself and my instincts for music. For artists, it is indeed of great importance to be unique and true to themselves. Q. This year you had a number of concerts worldwide including one at the famous Carnegie Hall in New York. Can you tell us about your experience at such a world famous venue as Carnegie Hall? A. 2018 was a really successful and exciting year. It was also my first year as a free artist after being a student at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London. Performing at Carnegie Hall in a solo concert debut at the age of 23 is a real challenge but also a privilege. I was working hard for months on every detail of the programme. When the night of the performance came and I was in the backstage waiting for the concert to begin, it all felt like I was dreaming. From the very first note on stage the magic of the night had started. Being on stages like Carnegie Hall gives each performer the best adrenaline rush and feeling of satisfaction that an artist can ever experience. Q. From where does your love for Opera originate? A. I have been imagining myself as a performer on the stage since I was very little. From early childhood, I didn’t know what kind of performer I would like to be, until I began playing the piano at the age of 6. Even though the piano is still my passion, I was looking for something where I could express myself vocally and dramatically as well. As a young teenager, having been inspired by an opera show that I watched, I decided that I would like to try THE COLLECTION


singing opera. Then I realised that, for me, opera is a perfect combination of all the finest arts which were my interest. Q. What is the next role you would like to portray on the stage and what are your plans for the future? A. I am always full of ideas and ambitions for the future. Right now, I am preparing a new repertoire for upcoming performances in 2019, in Spain, England, Montenegro, China and the USA. Regarding the roles, I am working on the role of Adina from L’elisir d’amore. I like the role because it is quite humorous and for once, the Soprano does not die at the end of the performance – there is a happy ending unlike many famous operas.

Q. Your study and performances take you all over the world. When you come home to Montenegro, where do you like to visit and how do you like to spend your time? Most of all, I like spending time at my homes in Budva or Podgorica. There is no warmth nor comfort anywhere like there is at home. These are the places where I always feel complete peace after lots of hard work and continuous travel. I am surrounded by my family and friends and that is the best feeling ever. We are now in the winter season where peace and quiet are the norm, especially for our coast. The smell of the sea is always an inspiration for me, the feeling of freedom, calmness and eternity- there are no limits in this life. I like visiting Porto Montenegro which I feel has the harmony of the Mediterranean spirit and luxury of the Swiss’ lakes. Boka Bay is stunningly beautiful and I love MONTENEGRO

Prethodno, Tamara je imala sjajnu priliku da prisustvuje masterclass časovima poznate Montserrat Caballé, kao i da dva puta nastupa na njenom gala koncertu u Saragosi, kao jedan od 12 najboljih glasova elitne selekcije. 2018-ta bila je prva Tamarina godina kao slobodne umjetnice i nju je krunisala nastupom u čuvenom Carnegie Hall-u u New York-u. Njena ljubav prema operi počela je rano. Iako je inicijalno mislila da će odabrati put profesionalne pijanistkinje, uvidjevši sopstvene glasovne mogućnosti, shvatila je da je opera zapravo njen pravi san.
