The Learning Center for the Deaf
Three Full National/Regional Accreditations in one year a tremendous achievement for The Learning Center!

Council on Accreditation grants TLC full accreditation.
The Learning Center for the Deaf (TLC) is very excited to announce that it has recently been granted full accreditation by the Council on Accreditation (COA), an international accreditating body for non-profit service organizations. They particularly focused on TLC’s Parent Infant Program, Day Care and Walden School programs. Walden School is now the only residential treatment program serving Deaf students in the USA that is accredited by COA! Earlier in the year TLC received full accreditations from New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). More information can be found at www.tlcdeaf.org; click on ‘TLC Accreditation.’
Accreditation Celebration: Field Day and BBQ at Framingham Campus! On June 4, the TLC community, including all three campuses, came together to celebrate TLC’s accomplishment of earning three accreditations. Everyone had great fun going on rides, eating the delicious BBQ food, watching animal shows, and socializing. In the afternoon, there was a school-wide assembly where a slideshow with all the pictures from that same day was presented. Special thanks go to the Massa family for their generous donation of amusements.

Welcome from the Interim
Executive Director
Greetings, What an extraordinary school year this has been. As Mike Bello assumes his new position as Executive Director Emeritus, the vision and leadership he brought to this school could not be more apparent. Receiving three major accreditations in one year was an amazing accomplishment. It was an all school effort, and the experience provided us with new opportunities for administrators, faculty and staff from all programs on both campuses to work together. It was also the perfect birthday gift as The Learning Center turns 40 this year! If you have visited our campus recently, you have seen some very concrete evidence of our growth. After a bittersweet farewell to our old Barn Building, which housed the entire school program in the early days, and was most recently home to our library, Parent Infant Program and art studio, construction began on our new Early Childhood/Library Media Center building. The building is scheduled to be completed in March of 2011. Having this new Early Childhood Center will leave more space in the Mary Phillip Building for our Elementary Program and support services, and planning for this expansion has already begun.
Judy Vreeland
Building this new facility and redesigning existing space is essential if we are to continue providing the highest quality educational services, but we could not do it without the support of our donors. This year's gala was a tremendous success and raised over $170,000 for the new building. We are grateful to the many supporters who have contributed to our Building for Learning Campaign and invite you to stop by and see what you are helping to create. Still, there is more to be done, and Mike will be working with our Development Office over this next year to expand our appeal and help ensure we meet our goals. As you will see as you read through this newsletter, students and faculty had a very busy year and earned recognition for individual and group accomplishments. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve this community in my new role as Interim Executive Director, and am looking forward with enthusiasm to the new school year. With gratitude,
Judy Vreeland

All Campuses News Framingham Campus Construction Timeline, as of June, 2010: A farewell event for TLC’s barn and first elementary building was held on April 15. The Framingham campus and Walden School students, staff, some former staff and alumni visited the Barn for the very last time, wrote good-bye messages on the walls and participated in a few different activities to remember the building. Shortly after, the building was demolished. April 16, the last day for the library, art room and ASL department, all housed in the barn. As of May 11, the library and art program moved to modular classrooms, while the ASL department relocated to the second floor of Kellogg House.
May 4, the playground was demolished, with a temporary playground behind the maintenance building becoming available. May 6, construction of the new early childhood center began with demolition. May 12, the far end of the soccer field became the temporary home for dirt from the new building’s excavation. Fencing was also installed for temporary parking. The dirt pile is about 80 feet by 80 feet and 25 feet high. The pile will be trucked back to the building site and the field replanted during the summer.
