The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children TLC was founded in 1990 by internationally recognized childhood trauma specialist Dr. William Steele. Currently, under the guidance of Director Dr. Caelan Kuban, 6,000 TLC Certified Trauma and Loss School Specialists and Clinical Specialists provide TLC interventions and resources to children, adolescents, families, schools, and communities daily. TLC’s published evidence-based research and outcomes support the value of its schoolbased programs and clinical intervention strategies. More than 50,000 professionals have participated in TLC trainings. Thousands have given testimony to the timely, practical, and immediately usable interventions, recovery strategies, programs, and resource materials. TLC is a program of the Starr Global Learning Network, an internationally recognized leader in transformational programs for children, families, schools, and communities. TLC’s strength-based approaches are providing parents, educators, clinicians, and childcare workers with innovative techniques to bring out the best in every child.

Trauma Practitioner Certification

Join the growing network of TLC trauma professionals by earning your Trauma Practitioner Certification. TLC Certification provides you with the tools needed to work with traumatized clients and teaches you how to use the SITCAP® trauma intervention programs. Become a Certified Trauma Practitioner or an Advanced Certified Trauma Practitioner by taking five required live or online courses and an exam.

Training at Your School, Agency, or Organization

TLC Certified Trainers are available to present a TLC training at your site, or we can customize a training to fit the needs of your organization, agency, or school. TLC Certified Trainers are experts in the field of childhood trauma with decades of experience and handson practice working with specialized populations. They not only teach the “why” but the “how” as they provide practical strategies to use with traumatized children, adolescents, and families.

“There’s just no reasoning with her...” Until you find the underlying reason for the behavior. TLC’s proven SITCAP® (Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents, and Parents) model was pioneered by internationally recognized experts and is centered on the concept that changing behavior isn’t possible until you change the sensory memories that fuel the behavior. SITCAP® provides a powerful framework for helping those who have been traumatized engage in program activities to allow them to experience themselves as safe and empowered. They will no longer be victims but survivors and thrivers, ready to flourish. Eventually, they will experience themselves differently and thereafter cognitively reframe their experience in ways that are manageable. Developed and used over the past 24 years and field-tested in schools and community agencies, SITCAP® is supported by the latest scientific advances in neuroscience and has been featured in leading scholarly journals and numerous books on childhood trauma.

SITCAP®–TLC’s evidence-based approach– leading the field in the treatment of childhood trauma.

Help in times of crisis

The experience of trauma brings about symptoms and reactions that are often overwhelming and frightening. It is difficult to not only make sense out of these symptoms and reactions but also to manage responses that seem to take on a life of their own. Trauma’s impact limits a child’s ability to think about or control behaviors before they happen.

NEW! Trauma in Schools and Communities

William Steele

Uses the power of first-hand, autobiographical narratives to illustrate the advantages and pitfalls of specific interventions implemented in the wake of tragedies. This book addresses short- and long-term impacts of traumatic events and the challenges faced by both survivors and responders. Level: Professionals

Social Media and Trauma Workbook

Amy Killgore & Denise Zimmermann

Social Media and Trauma WORKBOOK FOR GRADES 3 TO 12

The Power of Normalizing

Amy K. Killgore Denise M. Zimmermann

For example, anger may turn into aggression or hurt may lead to selfharm in a child who, pre-trauma, knew how to cope with his or her feelings in more productive ways. It is common for traumatized children to report feeling out of control because even though they know their behaviors are unhealthy, they can’t seem to control them no matter how hard they try. When this is the case, it helps to start by normalizing a person’s symptoms and reactions. Explain to them that by working together you can help them find ways to reduce their overall stress so that they gain more access to the parts of their brain that help them with impulse control, decision making, and problem solving. Highlight the fact that they are normal and not alone. This support is the first step to lowering hyper-arousal in a traumatized person so that development of self-regulation can follow.

“This is a great program!” I just finished my first SITCAP® sessions with an 8-year-old girl who was experiencing horrific nightmares as a delayed grief reaction to when her grandfather died last year–he was buried alive. Her mother was hospitalized in December and since then the girl would not sleep in her own bed and continued to have nightmares and panic attacks. We just finished Session 6 and I heard from the mom that she slept in her own bed on Friday for the first time in months. This is a great program. Thank you so much! Themes of Trauma

Trauma is experienced in various themes that often include worry, hurt, fear, anger, revenge, victim thinking, and feeling an overall lack of safety. Once we understand how trauma impacts the brain, we can appreciate the importance of using sensory-based interventions. Sensory-based interventions are more effective than using words alone (talk therapy), especially for survivors of trauma because the part of our brain that is needed to process language and higher-level thinking is often compromised when we are under intense stress (or trauma). Sensory-based interventions on the other hand work on a “body level” engaging one or more of our five senses–sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. These interventions also help to lower arousal caused by stress and trauma, ameliorating the adverse trauma-specific symptoms and reactions. Some examples of sensory-based interventions include play with puppets, dollhouses, sand tray, art, music, drama, dance, and bibliotherapy. These kinds of interventions can be playfully directed at helping reduce the symptoms and reactions related to the trauma themes that are experienced following an acute or chronically traumatic situation. Children, adolescents, and even adults respond well to sensory-based interventions because activities help to communicate relevant issues in ways that are more easily tolerated than by talking. The interventions also provide a container for feelings, which helps facilitate structure and safety when dealing with difficult content. Lastly, sensory-based interventions engage individuals and provide them with an opportunity to become an active participant in their treatment, which is an empowering experience.
