MISSION Education Through Music (ETM) partners with inner-city schools to provide music as a core subject for all children, and utilizes music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence.
VISION Education Through Music believes: - Every child deserves access to high-quality music education, taught by qualified and well-trained music teachers - Music should support learning in other key areas, including math, science and language arts - Engaged parents and school communities are key to the success of students
2013 EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC
Dear Friends, Thank you for joining us tonight as we celebrate the success of Education Through Music in supporting inner-city schools with music education programs. We look forward to the future, a future in which every child has access to high-quality music education. Education Through Music (ETM) believes all children deserve the support they need to succeed in life. ETM is the only non-profit in New York City to implement a comprehensive music education model. What we do goes well beyond mere exposure to music or providing after-school programs. Rather, ETM provides students with music education as a core subject, while improving academic achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence. Tonight we honor a great advocate for the children we serve. Richard Bernstein has tirelessly worked to help promote Education Through Music. He has demonstrated that one person can make a world of difference for many children. Thank you, Richard! On behalf of the board and staff of Education Through Music, we thank you for joining us in support of the 14,000 students in 28 schools we serve.

2013 Honoree
Richard Bernstein Education Through Music is proud to salute Richard Bernstein as the 2013 Education Through Music Children’s Benefit Gala Honoree. Music has had a profound impact on Richard’s life in every way imaginable. He is a passionate advocate for bringing music education programs to all children, particularly in inner-city schools where the impact can be the greatest, and the programs are cut first. Richard’s love for music began at a very young age, sitting at the piano next to his mother. As he grew (and practiced), Richard’s talent and passion became apparent. While his lessons waned as he raised his family, when his eldest daughter Mallory began studying piano, it inspired Richard to do so once again. He enrolled in The Julliard School’s adult evening division. Today, Richard studies at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees. Each day before work Richard practices piano for two hours, arriving at his studio above Grand Central Terminal, long before the sun rises. Richard has 25 years of commercial real estate experience focused on tenant and owner representation. He is a skilled real estate negotiator who is particularly adept at understanding market issues and trends. Mr. Bernstein expertly devises unique and creative solutions to complex real estate problems for his clients and their portfolios – whether they have one suite or multiple locations across the globe. Mr. Bernstein’s successes include large-scale corporate consolidations, expansions and relocations as well as developing and executing complex portfolio monetization strategy. This expertise led Mr. Bernstein to be named by The Real Deal as one of their top 20 “Power Brokers” in New York City, having closed over 500,000 square feet of transactions in 2011 and 2012 as well as being named to the top 10 tenant representation list, by volume. Mr. Bernstein was also named to Real Estate Forum’s 2012 Top Brokers in New York. Richard credits music with providing a work ethic and a foundation for success in his life. Music and music education has affected everything in Richard’s life, from his professional success to the way he greets each day.
Education Through Music
is commited to have a lasting impact in the lives of the 14,000 children at 28 partner schools. This commitment dates back to 1991, when the first ETM program began in one school. ETS found that schools in the poorest communities with the lowest academic achievement lacked the arts. In fact, 57% of schools in New York City do not have a full-time certified music teacher on staff, and school budgets for arts supplies and equipment decreased by 87% from 2007 to 2012. (2011-12 Annual Arts in Schools Report, produced by NYC Department of Education.) ETM was founded to specifically address this problem. Today, we serve 28 schools in New York City, as well as affiliates in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area which serve an additional 8,000 students. Education Through Music’s program unlocks a whole world of potential, providing comprehensive music instruction as a core discipline to every child throughout the entire school year. When ETM partners with a school, every child is involved regardless of talent or ability. Research shows that students in schools with Education Through Music perform better in reading and math, as well as gain self-esteem and self-confidence. ETM’s model focuses on the concept that every child deserves access to high quality music education, taught by qualified and well-trained teachers. Every student attending an ETM partner school receives music as a core subject. In addition, ETM works to engage all school principals, classroom and academic teachers, qualified and well-trained music teachers, and engaged parents. The ETM model supports learning in other subject areas, including math, science and reading.
Support for Partner Schools ETM partners with schools and principals committed to supporting a full implementation of the ETM model and continuing support of the ETM program. This requirement has ensured that partner schools are fully-engaged, and this sets up Education Through Music for success in each school. ETM curriculum follows New York State and National arts standards. Music teachers assess students via quizzes, portfolios, homework, and performance. Music teachers also communicate with other classroom teachers to find out about the curricula being used in other subjects, and what skills and themes to address, so that music education is integrated seamlessly into each student’s learning. All music teachers participate in the ETM Academy, which provides extensive professional development. ETM Academy includes full-day workshops prior to the start of the school year, as well as during the school year. Professional development topics include classroom management, lesson planning, integration strategies, standard benchmarks for student achievement, incorporating music technology into the classroom, concert preparation and leading ensemble groups. In addition to the support ETM provides to music teachers at each school, additional support is provided to classroom teachers and principals. ETM provides professional development sessions for classroom teachers on-site at each partner school. These sessions build advocacy for music education and encourage academic integration into each student’s learning. ETM offers one-on-one guidance to each partner school principal on program management, budgeting, and strategic planning. ETM also encourages parent awareness of the program and participation in their child’s learning through concerts, performances and community events.
