2014 EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC

TUESDAY, MAY 6, 2014 | 6:30 PM CAPITALE, NEW YORK, NY

Who We Are

Eduction Through Music is a group of dedicated educators and musicians committed to advancing students’ academic and personal development by ensuring that all children have access to high-quality music education.

What We Do

• Partner with inner-city elementary and middle schools. • Provide comprehensive and sequential music instruction for every child at our partner schools. • Provide training and professional development for music and classroom teachers. • Strengthen parent and school involvement to build long-term sustainability.

Why We Do It • • •

Children learn better when music is part of their school routine. 59% of city schools do not have a full-time certified music teacher. Only one-third of 6th-8th graders citywide reported participating in music during the 2012-13 school year.

Our Impact • • • • • •

Significant improvement in students’ musical skills. Improved test performance in Math and English Language Arts. Student growth in self-confidence and self-esteem. Improvements in teaching practices among music and classroom teachers. Increased capacity of partner schools to sustain music programs. Our success has led to replication in other communities across the country.

2014 EDUCATION THROUGH MUSIC

‘ Dear Friends, What has music taught you? This year Education Through Music (ETM) has been asking that question to highlight the importance of music education in schools. The ETM programteaches children so much more in addition to music: a passion for reading, an appreciation for the arts, dedication and determination, self-confidence, creativity, and so much more. Education Through Music believes all children deserve the support they need to succeed in life. ETM is the only non-profit in New York City to implement a comprehensive music education model to every child in our partner schools. What we do goes well beyond mere exposure to music or providing after-school programs. Rather, ETM provides students with music education as a core subject, while improving academic achievement, motivation for school, and self-confidence. Tonight we honor a great advocate for the children we serve. Elizabeth Sobol, the President and CEO of Universal Music Classics knows all too well what music teaches us. She has tirelessly worked to help promote Education Through Music. Thank you, Elizabeth! On behalf of the board and staff of Education Through Music, we thank you for joining us in support of the 15,000 students in 28 schools we serve.

Katherine Damkohler Michael R. Schaefer Executive Director Chairman of the Board

Support Education Through Music through our NYC Street Banner program Support ETM’s fall banner promotion, taking place during the month of September, 2014, to assist us in placing street banners around New York City. The banners help us reach a large audience, drive traffic to our website, and increase awareness about Education Through Music. Banners cost $600 each, and feature your company’s logo at the bottom. (Individual names may not be placed on a banner, but individuals may underwrite the placement of a banner.) Last year’s banner program resulted in increased exposure for ETM. The banners from the 2013 campaign will be featured in the upcoming Nicolas Cage movie, Left Behind. The banner program also resulted in a partnership with a major Broadway show.
