Music Teachers Attend Professional Development Summer Sessions Education Through Music is dedicated to developing the talents of its teachers to help deepen their impact inside the classroom. Throughout the course of the year, ETM offers music teachers programs that support professional development, helping to ensure their long-term success. This past summer, ETM hosted three trainings, Orff-Schulwerk Teacher Education Course Level I and Level III and ETM Academy, where new and experienced music teachers came together to prepare for the new school year. These courses ensure that teachers are learning the best practices in education and are continuing to grow and maintain their skills. The coursework of Orff-Schulwerk guides practicing music teachers through an exploration and understanding of the teaching and learning process using the Orff-

Grammy Award-winning Violinist Joshua Bell Tours M.S. 529 in the Bronx

Students from One World Middle School M.S. 529 in the Bronx perform for Joshua Bell.

Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell visited ETM partner school M.S. 529 in the Bronx on Tuesday, October 9th, to tour the music technology lab, see students perform, and perform for the student body himself. Bell was greeted at the school by a group of string orchestra students. Thanks to ETM, all of the students are familiar with Bell’s music, and excitedly greeted him with a banner welcoming him to the school. The students also had the opportunity to perform for Bell.

Bell’s tour began in the M.S. 529 music technology lab, where students were mixing their own tracks using GarageBand software. Students demonstrated how they integrate technology to create original compositions, learn to read music using computer software and recognize chords by ear using the technology lab. Each student has their own Mac computer station with a keyboard and headphones. Students shared their musical creations with Bell, and then he reciprocated by mixing a song for the students.

The highlight of the visit was a performance by Joshua Bell of music from the movie “The Red Violin.” Bell received a standing ovation from the students. Joshua Bell has been a longtime supporter of ETM, including currently serving as a Board Member. He has visited a number of ETM partner schools over the last decade, and has filmed a PSA in support of ETM, which can be seen on ETM’s YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/asruQYExacA

Did You Know a ZIP Code Can Determine the Quality of Education a Student Receives? ETM’s partnerships seek to bring more equity to education, ensuring that regardless of zip code, a student receives a comprehensive and competitive education. Compared to schools in high-income areas, schools in low- and middle- income areas are: · more likely to report decreased art funding over the past three years; · more likely to have no rooms dedicated to music education; · less likely to receive arts funding from non-DOE sources; and · less likely to receive arts funding from a PTA.
