Professional Development Brings a Positive Beat to Music Classrooms Keeping students engaged in the classroom is a constant challenge for teachers. Finding new and innovative ways to support teachers’ efforts to foster active learning is an essential part of Education Through Music’s professional development program. This fall, ETM’s music teachers participated in a professional
development workshop using the cajón, a hardwood box-shaped drum that can be easily played in a range of musical styles. The cajón is ideally suited for classroom learning because of its versatility and simplicity. It is a stand and a seat all in one that students can easily play by tapping out a simple beat and building to more complex patterns.
Music teachers and mentors participate in a cajón drumming workshop as part of ETM’s year-round professional development for teachers.
ETM music teachers led by percussionist and clinician Sebastian Guerrero, learned about the cajón’s Afro-Peruvian roots and how to integrate its rich sound into their music curriculum, as well as other core subject areas like math, social studies and ELA. At St. Ann School in Manhattan, teacher Gordon Green took what he learned in the ETM workshop and used the cajón to help his students learn songs for their Christmas concert. “As an educator, I am constantly looking for new ways to support my students’ learning,” said Green. “I was excited to take what I learned from the cajón workshop and use the new teaching method in my classroom.” Green took phrases from the Christmas songs the students were learning and sang them to a reggaeton while having his students echo the phrase back using the cajón. “Singing these classical melodies to an urban beat really changed the vibe of the class, and the students had fun Continued on page 2

and were more engaged using the drums. It really brought the students out of their shells and helped them learn the music quickly,” shared Green. Green’s success has inspired him to continue to incorporate the cajón into future classroom lessons. “This
month, I’m having the students write their own rap songs,” he said. “We are taking words from a Tupac Shakur poem and the students are creating their own beats. I plan to use the cajón for them to practice saying the rap in real time.”
For Huey, a bright fifth grader at an ETM partner school in the Bronx, socializing at school was a challenge. He often misinterpreted his classmates’ actions and created conflicts. He was lonely and longed to make friends. Huey’s music teacher recognized that he had a passion for music, and believed music could help Huey channel the intensity of his emotions in a positive direction. This fall, Huey picked up the cello, and it has not left his side since. After three short months in his school’s orchestra,
Huey is growing to understand social cues and is making friends. His music teacher explained, “Succeeding at the cello has given Huey confidence and greatly boosted his self-esteem.” Now Huey is a valuable asset and friendly resource to his peers; he offers them strategies on how to succeed in rehearsals and livens up practice with jokes and laughter. Music is providing Huey with a constructive outlet for his emotions, transforming the way he relates to the world around him and helping him bring positivity to his surroundings.

ETM Program Engages and Supports the Entire Partner School Education Through Music recognizes the key to the success of its program is through close collaboration with key stakeholders at its partner schools. This approach is fundamental to ETM’s music curriculum and its approach to the professional development training it offers throughout the school year. ETM requires its music teachers to attend regular professional development sessions to ensure they have the support and resources they need to be successful in the classroom. ETM also provides support for academic teachers, school principals, and parents and caregivers. “Children benefit most when their music education includes the same rigor as other academic subjects,” says Meryl Cullom, ETM’s Professional Development Specialist. “We use shared skills and strategies across disciplines, like comparing and contrasting, navigating complex text and using algebraic thinking. Students can then transfer their knowledge across the curriculum and delve deeper.” For academic teachers attending a session on Navigating Complex Text, ETM takes the score to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and musical listening maps to demonstrate strategies for tackling close reading and com-

plex text. Another workshop, Music and Math, uses rhythm tracks with mathematical patterning to strengthen student fluency which will assist them in more complex tasks later on. One teacher at partner school PS 277 in the Bronx had this to say about attending an ETM professional development session: “I really enjoyed the workshop. It introduced a new way to make math fun and engaging for students. I can definitely apply this during my math routine and fluency block.” Conveying Music Education Principles to Principals, a workshop
designed for school administrators, explores characteristics of quality music education and its impact on academic achievement for all students. ETM’s parent and caregiver workshops get families involved in student learning through interactive music making, like playing instruments, singing, composing and improvisation. Spice up Your Storytelling teaches fun learning strategies to engage children in storytelling utilizing music, creative dramatics and the rhythm of language.
