A Change

This short story was originally written for a Flash Fiction Contest. It had to be three hundred words or less and contain the words button, clue and jump which are highlighted. I have since added words to improve on the story. Please feel free to leave plenty of comments and suggestions. Thanks for reading.

I was always trying to find the right button to push. When he got home, he would either fuss all night long or he would want to tell me about every little thing that happened to him. Not that I wasn't interested, but I had my own problems to deal with today and didn't want to hear about his. I was going to do something different.

My first clue was when he stepped in the door and decided to jump right into the fussing, "Why didn't you remind me to take my wallet this morning?" He didn't even look my way. "A cop pulled me over. He says they were doing random stops looking for some guy who had broke out of jail."

As I went about trying to get his dinner, he yelled out, "Woman, are you listening to a word I'm saying? Here I am pouring out my soul and you are ignoring me. I swear, I don't know what good you are to me." With that, he went into another bout of fussing as I put his food in front of him, which started another subject for him to fuss about.

"Woman, why did you set this piping hot plate of food in my face? Are you trying to kill me or something? What are you thinking about? Do you hear me talking to you?"

At that point, I had enough, so I walked up to him and gave him a kiss that was out of this world and said ever so sweetly, "Honey, I

love you so much. I am so glad that I married you. You make me the happiest woman in the world."

After that, he just sat there in silence, not knowing whether to eat or run.
