ontgomery is the capital of Alabama and the second largest city in the state with a population of 205,764, according to the 2010 census. The city, which was incorporated on Dec. 3, 1819, is located southeast of the center of the state. Montgomery is nationally known for its many historic/cultural landmarks and events such as the Alabama State Capitol, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Church, First White House of the Confederacy, Montgomery Bus Boycott, Hank Williams Memorial, Alabama War Memorial and Alabama Shakespeare Festival. The city attracted the first electric street car system and the Wright Brothers’ (Orville and Wilbur) first school for powered flight. Today, Montgomery is the home of both Maxwell and Gunter Air Force Bases. The city is the home of several public and private colleges, as well as military schools. Montgomery’s 15 colleges, universities and military schools provide world-class educational opportunities. In 2004, Montgomery landed one of the biggest economic development projects when Hyundai Motors Manufacturing Alabama built its $1.4 billion automotive plant. The Montgomery location became Hyundai’s first assembly and manufacturing plant in the United States. It employs more than 3,000 team members and currently produces the next generation Sonata sedan. That same year, Montgomery acquired a minor league baseball team called the Montgomery Biscuits, Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The Biscuits are the 2006 and 2007 Southern League Champions. The team plays in a 7,000-seat facility known as Riverwalk Stadium and owned by the City of Montgomery. The stadium boasts of several seating styles: executive box, super box, lawn and suite level. Downtown Montgomery lies along the southern banks of the Alabama River, while the east side is the fastest-growing part of the city. Auburn Montgomery, the city’s two largest shopping malls and Wynton M. Blount Cultural Park, a 250-acre park which contains the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and Montgomery Fine Museum of Fine Arts, are located on the east side of town. Today, the city is known for its renaissance of historic downtown and redevelopment of the riverfront.

WARHAWK NATION

Director of Athletics First Year Plymouth State University, 1988 A leader with more than 25 years of experience in athletic administration, including nearly 12 years working at the NCAA Division II level, Jim Herlihy was named the new Director of Athletics at Auburn University at Montgomery in September of 2015. Herlihy spent the previous 16 months as the Director of Athletics at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., a NCAA Division II member which competes in both the Northeast-10 Conference and Eastern College Athletic Conference. During his tenure with the Hawks, Herlihy oversaw 20 sports, nine facilities, 68 employees and more than 450 student-athletes. He managed the financial aspects of a $7 million operating budget and Annual Fund, while cultivating gifts in athletic initiatives during the leadership phase of the first-ever Capital Campaign conducted in the 125-year history of Saint Anselm. Herlihy also served on the President’s Cabinet, where he was the liaison for numerous campus committees. Under his leadership, five teams qualified for national tournaments and more than 55 percent of student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, the department of athletics boasted a 92 percent graduation rate and student-athletes participated in more than 4,000 hours of community service. Prior to his arrival on the Hilltop, Herlihy served as the Director of Athletics at the University of Montevallo for seven years. While at Montevallo, Herlihy guided the Falcons through a transition from the Gulf South Conference to their current home, the Peach Belt Conference, while also overseeing the 15 athletic programs, 42 employees, more than 300 student-athletes and seven facilities. He spearheaded the fund raising and construction of three new facilities on campus and improved the Annual Fund by more than 200 percent. Herlihy was also responsible for the addition of five varsity sports at Montevallo. Competitively, the Falcons captured six conference championships and finished as conference runners-up eight times. The school qualified for the NCAA Tournament 15 times under his leadership. Montevallo posted its best finishes in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings under his guidance. Six student-athletes earned All-American status, while three were named Academic All-Americans. Montevallo also produced its first-ever conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Herlihy was an instrumental leader in a period of substantial growth at Montevallo. Under his direction, the Falcons increased their student-athlete population by more than 100 percent, while maintaining a strong tradition on the fields of competition and in the classroom. More than 60 percent of all student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, while athletics recorded a graduation rate more than 20 percent higher than the general student body. The department of athletics was a national finalist for the 2014 NCAA DII Award of Excellence and was recognized by the Peach Belt Conference for community engagement initiatives three times. Herlihy has served on the NCAA DII Management Council, as well as been a member of the NCAA DII Finance & Planning Committee and DII Identity & Branding Committee. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and has served on the Board of Directors for the DII Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of both the College Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) and the Collegiate Event & Facility Management Association (CEFMA). Before leading the staff at Montevallo, Herlihy served as an Assistant Athletic Director at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla. He has worked in revenuegenerating positions in the Major League Baseball front offices for both the Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers, where he served as the General Manager of the Clearwater Phillies and the Charlotte Rangers, respectively. He also spent time as the Assistant General Manager of the Nashville Sounds Minor League Baseball team. Herlihy earned his bachelor’s degree from Plymouth State University, before completing his master’s degree in sports management at the University of Alabama. He also completed the Sports Management Institute’s executive education program, sponsored by the University of Notre Dame and University of Georgia, in 2011. Coastal Georgia (Brunswick, Ga.) Dalton State (Dalton, Ga.) Faulkner (Montgomery, Ala.) Loyola (New Orleans, La.) Martin Methodist (Pulaski, Tenn.) Middle Georgia (Cochran, Ga.) Mobile (Mobile, Ala.) William Carey (Hattiesburg, Miss.) Founded in 1949, what is known today as the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) has prospered and excelled both athletically as well as academically in the Southeast region of the United States. The SSAC is currently made up of 14 institutions from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi. The conference was originally established as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GIAC) with six charter members, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the league was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference (GAC) and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. In November of 2012, the league announced that it planned to expanded to 16 teams for the 2013-14 season with the inclusion of Blue Mountain College, Martin Methodist College and Bethel (Tenn.) University from the TranSouth Conference. At the conclusion of the 2013-14 year, the league saw the departure of Southern Wesleyan University, Spring Hill College and Emmanuel College, which all transitioned to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II, in addition to Southern Polytechnic State University, which was consolidated with Kennesaw State University. Those vacancies allowed for the admission of Dalton State College and Middle Georgia State College. Both institutions will compete within the SSAC during the 2014-15 season, giving the conference 14 total members. The SSAC hosts 14 conference championships including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, and men’s and women’s track and field. Since its inception and affiliation with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the conference has developed a reputation as being one of the premier conferences in the country in several sports. The SSAC boasts 32 teams and 11 individual national titles, while 30 more teams have finished as national runners-up. With its office based in historic Montgomery, Ala., the conference staff features Commissioner Mike Hall, Assistant Commissioner Sam Knehans, Treasurer Sally Shoppe and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton. The 2015-16 academic year marks the 16th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the SSAC. Since joining the league in 2000, the university has collected 69 total conference regular season and tournament championships.

Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) since 1975. In those 40 years, AUM has claimed 25 national championships and seven of the school’s 10 varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Kansas City, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and more than 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual. In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion.

The 2016 Auburn Montgomery men’s tennis team returns four intergral pieces to last year’s 21-6 squad, including First-Team All-American and Conference Player of the Year Vincent Dubosclard. In addition, sixth year head coach Rolando Vargas also returns Francisco Mendieta, Birkir Gunnarsson and senior Luis Vivas, which will provide the Warhawks with a strong, veteran presence. The four returners can be heavily attributed to last year’s success, including a Southern States Athletic Conference championship. “Vincent showed a lot of improvement last year where he was able to finish seventh in the nation having great wins over top players in the nation,” head coach Rolando Vargas said. “Mendieta also showed a lot of mental toughness as he won a very tough match against Barry saving three match points,” Vargas said. “He has shown that he could be a leader and he is also a very good doubles player. He has also shown improvement and with the right mindset, will be ready to play in the top of the lineup for us.” “Gunnarsson has shown that hard work and relentlessness pays off as he has become one of the fittest players in the nation,” Vargas said. “He can spend hours on the court making his opponents weary. He has valuable experience, as he has been ITA Singles and Doubles All-American. He has tremendous returns and if he dictates points and stays close to the baseline, he could have an 12

outstanding 2016 campaign.” “Vivas, our only senior, will be a great asset as he is one of the most energetic players on the team,” Vargas said. “If he shows consistency in his game inand-out, he can be a true force and play anywhere in the lineup.” Lastly, we have three strong newcomers who are top junior players in Argentina: Federico Lombisano, Santiago Veglia and Matias Destefanis. “Lombisano possesses a good all-around game and is extremely powerful,” Vargas said. “I believe with the right guidance he can become a very good player for AUM.” “Veglia has a huge serve who can be directed anywhere with great disguise and is very hard to read,” Vargas said. “He has very good hands at the net and his competitive spirit is top notch.” “Destefanis is a very good player who can grind throughout a match and can create damage with his serve,” Vargas said. “He is a very smart player who also knows how to move the ball around and can close in at the net at the right time. The three newcomers will also provide the Warhawks with strong doubles play. The combination of returners and newcomers provide AUM with a balanced team with much-needed depth.

Auburn Montgomery women’s tennis, the reigning NAIA National Champions, looks towards defending its title in 2016 with a lineup that returns four players from last year’s 23-4 squad. Head coach Rolando Vargas will, the 2015 ITA Coach of the Year, has added two newcomers with collegiate playing experience to the Warhawks roster. “Paula Diaz who finished as a NAIA First-Team AllAmerican and ITA Doubles All-American, has improved each year especially helping us at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles,” Vargas said. “She is a fighter and her positive attitude is contagious for her team. She has played very consistently by staying in the national rankings in both singles and doubles. Her highlight came when she clinched the National Championship match with a come-frombehind victory. I believe that’s going to elevate her game even more.” “Kelly Southwood, who was NAIA All-American Honorable Mention, was extremely important for us last season,” Vargas said. “A big-time recruit for AUM, she came in and only lost one match in singles at the No. 3 slot. Her determination is one of a kind and I think she gained valuable experience last year, which should make her a big contributor for this season and help her move up in the lineup. She also went undefeated in doubles with Celine Lenertz. Both Paula and Kelly could be tremendous leaders for us. “Celine, who also had an outstanding season by helping AUM to a great record at the No. 5 slot, was also an NAIA All-American Honorable Mention,” Vargas said. “She showed tremendous improvement as a doubles player and I believe she gained valuable confidence to elevate her game this year. She is very talented and with the right work ethic, she could solidify herself as one of

the best in the nation as well.” “Anna Rudolfova showed remarkable fight and perseverance by becoming one of the best doubles players in the nation due to her great hands at the net and good touch earning ITA All-American status for her second straight year,” Vargas said. “In addition, she showed that she can be a super strong singles player, as she fears no one and is willing to fight all day long on the court. With the right attitude, she can help her teammates push more.” The Warhawks will bring in two newcomers, Furman University transfer Alejandra Gil and Upper Iowa transfer, Iris Verweij. “Gil, who comes to us from Furman where she gained valuable experience as a freshman, is now as a sophomore,” Vargas said. “She has benefitted after experiencing the NCAA Division I level. She has a powerful game and closes really well at the net. I think that if she pushes herself, she can be a very solid player, as she is very physically strong. Over time, I believe she will become more dangerous for her opponent’s. During her prep years, she was ranked highly in the world as well as being one of the best players in Venezuela.” “Verweij, a highly-decorated athlete who spent the past two years of college at Upper Iowa, will supply us with another solid presence in our lineup,” Vargas said. “She earned numerous awards, including Conference Freshman of the Year, First-Team Singles and Second-Team Doubles both years. She was also named Conference Tennis Player of the Week three times, and Upper Iowa Athlete of the week four times. She played No. 1 for her team and she showed that she is someone to be reckoned with.”
