THE OFFICIAL BOOTS OF THE
Future in the Futurity
When riding a horse, there is one thing all trainers seem to agree on. “Look forward,” “eyes up” or “eyes on the prize” are common phrases that are taught and implemented in the cutting world. In the show pen, the rider must keep their eyes locked on the cow. Similarly, outside of the cutting pen, I encourage each of you to “look forward” in life.
The 2024 Metallic Cat World Championship Futurity, like each previous Futurity, is the foundation of these horses’ show careers. Looking forward, we have high hopes and aspirations for these incredible animals. The hard work, dedication, and passion that goes into training these equine athletes come to fruition at this show. They will then go on to become the next generation of cutting champions, a true testimony to every single rider, owner, breeder, and trainer who believed in them.
Nearly four years ago, the horses here today were foaled across the United States. Two years ago, these Futurity prospects were being broke to ride. Today, they are showing at the biggest of the Triple Crown events that the NCHA produces, all because somewhere along the way, someone looked to the future.
I encourage each of you to continue looking forward. Like in the show pen, life has its good and bad days, but we can make it through anything with our eyes up. Congratulations to each horse, rider, owner, and trainer who worked diligently to be here. Keep your eyes up!

Youth Connection
Officers of the National Youth Cutting Horse Association (NYCHA) are excited about working together to make NYCHA even stronger.
Hey NCHA! We are now headed into the best time of the year, and while many may automatically think Christmastime, cutters know that it’s FUTURITY SEASON!
Although there are many exciting things happening in the coming months, the most prominent is the NYCHA Stallion Auction. For those of you who do not know about our annual fundraiser, NYCHA members work tirelessly to gather stallion breedings to be auctioned off to the highest bidders. All funds gathered by these efforts will be put toward any and all NYCHA functions, including the NYCHA Youth Week and Eastern Nationals.
This auction will run from November 13 to December 18. Please check it out and help our youth members!
Even though we have not been in office long, the NYCHA officer team has made leaps and bounds toward improving our association even further. Please be on the lookout for all the big things coming this year!
In the meantime, if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or even recommendations, please feel free to contact me at any time. I hope to see everyone soon!
Riley Farris PRESIDENT
Franklin D. Roosevelt once declared, “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build the youth for our future.”
The NYCHA helps build the youth for our future. As proof, I wanted to take a moment to highlight the accomplishments of two special NYCHA alumnae.
Mattie Dukes, the 24-year-old former NYCHA President (2018-2020), devoted roughly 10 years of her childhood to the sport of cutting. Calling Weatherford, Texas, home, Dukes spent her weekends hauling up and down the road, and jockeying a handful of horses in the youth division. Two of her favorites were One Time Player (“Player”) and Reys Play (“Erma”).
Her youth career was nothing short of memorable, as she qualified for four NYCHA World Finals and served on the NYCHA leadership team outside of the arena. When it came time to hang up the bridle reins and say goodbye to her youth career, Dukes enrolled in Texas Christian University (TCU), in Fort Worth, Texas, where she majored in psychology and communications. Though her time in NYCHA was over, her involvement in the equine industry did not end there. Dukes competed on the TCU Women’s Equestrian Team (NCAA division one) as an undergrad, and she is currently working for the team as a graduate assistant while getting her masters degree at TCU in higher-education leadership.
When asked what advice she would give to other youth, Dukes said, “To always reach for your goals, push yourself, work hard, and have fun! My time in the youth is still some of my fondest memories. I miss it. It goes by quick so enjoy every minute of it!”
From the “big city” of Midway, Texas, 20-year-old Faith Farris began showing cutting horses at the age of six alongside her family. With 13 successful years under her belt, Farris showed numerous horses, but she “had three main mounts” throughout her youth career: Quite the Fat Cat, Smooth Serena Rey, and Big Shoes To Phil.
Though they all left hoofprints on her heart, her favorite is Big Shoes To Phil. He, along with each and every other horse, played a role in taking Farris to the top. She
above :
Riley Farris, President
was crowned the NYCHA World Champion not once but twice, and qualified in five other finals.
When her time as an NYCHA member came to an end, she began to dream of what her life would look like outside of the show pen. Falling in love with the idea of cosmetology, Farris attended cosmetology school in Bryan, Texas, where she acquired a cosmetology license. Keeping her “grown up” dreams in mind as well, she headed to Texas Tech University, in Lubbock, Texas, and is currently working on a degree in agricultural communications. Farris’ end goal is to become an equine industry marketer or social media manager. While at school, she is able to utilize her cosmetology license to make some money on the side.
When asked what advice she would give to other youth, Farris says, “To stay humble, work extremely hard, and always seek to learn from others, both in the arena and in life. Most importantly, always keep Jesus front and center, for you’d never be able to accomplish anything without Him.”
After talking to these two young women, the one thing that is abundantly clear is that NYCHA has been a major part of their lives. Their stories are a testament to the foundational work this program offers young people in cutting. But it takes a village to make this happen. Whether you have helped out in the show pen, supported from the sidelines, loaned a horse, donated to the NYCHA Stallion Auction, or anything in between, you are an important part of this journey.
People like you are the reason our program is able to accomplish all it does. With much gratitude in our hearts, on behalf of NYCHA, I wish to say “Thank you!”
Brea Collier SENIOR REPORTER
Hello Fellow Cutters, I hope everyone has felt some fall weather in their area. We have a lot of stuff coming up as the show year ends.
First, qualifying for the World Finals is nearly over. Good luck to everyone as they try to finish the year strong. Then, we have the NCHA Circuit Finals. Safe travels to all the cutters making their way to compete in their Circuits. Next up will be the 2024 NCHA Metallic Cat World Championship Futurity, the biggest cutting of the year! I hope to see many of you at these upcoming events.
Remember, it’s time to gather breedings for the annual NYCHA Stallion Auction. Let’s all work together to make this a successful fundraiser.
Finally, our cutting family has felt a lot of losses and sadness lately. My prayers go out to the Farris family on the loss of Mr. Mike, and all the people in the Southeast who have been affected by Hurricane Helene. This was a big tragedy to many.

Never Too Late
By Leslie George
For years, Cindy Houck DeHoff rose before dawn on rodeo competition days to complete the one hundred tasks required before loading her two daughters’ horses into a trailer and driving long distances to different arenas. For her youngest, Hadley, DeHoff turned back in high school rodeo cutting competitions.
“I joke that for the first fifty years of her life, my mom was a truck driver,” says oldest daughter, Courtenay, “hauling first me and then both me and my sister and our horses to rodeos around the country. It was always my mom, driving for hours, cleaning the stalls, getting up early to feed the horses, or racing them to the vet when there were problems."
These days, at age 60 — when she’s not ranching, calving cows, or teaching her two-year-old granddaughter Evie (“the ‘lil trotting fool”) to ride, Cindy DeHoff is hitting the road with her eight-year-old gelding in tow and competing at her own cutting shows.
“I bought my horse ‘Teo’ when I was 56,” DeHoff shared. “Everyone said I was crazy to start so late, but it’s been a dream for a long time.”
DeHoff grew up on horses at her parents’ Houck Rock Creek Ranch in Americus, Kansas. “We moved the cattle on horses,” she said, “we did everything on horses — no four-wheelers. I didn’t do rodeo in school like my girls did. I did 4-H, but I was exposed to cutting early.”
More than thirty years ago, her father helped her buy a cutting horse, but the mare caught her leg in an accident and was unable to compete. “That was the rise and fall of my cutting career,” DeHoff explained. “It was a disaster, but, looking back, I can see it wasn’t the right time for me. I was a new mother; Courtenay was tiny. My husband and I were just starting our own ranch while he commuted to Kansas City for his job. So, I put that dream away.”
ABOUT CINDY HOUCK DEHOFF
FAMILY AFFAIR
Cindy DeHoff’s father, Jim Houck, an American Quarter Horse competition judge, was fond of cutting horses and followed their bloodlines.
“I’ve seen my dad’s eyes well up watching the horses at the NCHA Futurity. He appreciates their talent and high-caliber training so much. They are thrilling for all of us to watch.”
HER HORSE
“Teo is a lover. He’ll lick you — it’s his way of kissing. He loves everybody. He’s always in your business. He’s too much horse for my granddaughter to ride but he’s dear to her. She puts her fingers up his nose; she gets in the hay with him, and he’ll eat the piece she’s holding.”
HER CHALLENGES
DeHoff loves the sport of cutting enough to get herself to competitions when her husband or daughter can’t join her, even with bad knees (three surgeries) and a recently injured back.
“I’m careful about the tires on the trailers before I travel these days,” DeHoff said.
“I can’t change a 150-pound tire anymore.”

Smooth As A Cat’s profound e ect on the industry started early on, and today we still see his impact. Over the past 12 months, these performers represent Smooth As A Cat’s bloodline. They are either sired by Smooth As A Cat, out of one of his daughters, or sired by one of his sons.
These 4 major shows alone, represent earnings of 1,205,943.39 from Smooth As A Cat’s bloodline.
Currently ranked by Equi-Stat in the top 5 All-Time Leading Sires, we will see that time will only boost his accomplishments as future generations contribute to his ongoing legacy.

When daughter Hadley started cutting in high school, DeHoff was reintroduced to the sport and to the people in and around the cutting community, “who are wonderful,” she said.
Some years later, DeHoff recalls that she again felt the call to cutting. “I missed the people, and I needed a horse back in my life,” she said. “So, I told my husband I wanted a cutting horse.”
DeHoff got a job working at a general feed store to pay for the horse. After a couple of years, “Anne Logan, whom my dear friend Hilary Watson introduced to me, called to say she had a gelding for sale and would hold him for one day if I wanted to try him,” she said. “I could tell ‘Teo’ was special right away.”
Teo’s registered name is Smart Delight CD (High Brow CD x Peptos Smart Delight x Peptoboonsmal). The first time she rode Teo, she was nervous: “I was just trying not to look like an idiot.” But she found that he was gentle and easy to ride.
DeHoff started working with trainer Dirk Blakesley, based in Augusta, Kansas, right away. “Whenever I came out of his class, I was like, ‘Hey, I didn’t fall off the horse.’ And that was a win,” she said with a laugh.
The mental training, DeHoff says, has been a big part of any success she has had in the cutting arena. “Teo and I could be winning the show, but as soon as I have the thought, ‘This is going great,’ a cow runs over me,” she said. “I've learned that when I think, I'm forgetting to look at what's right in front of me.”
On competition days, DeHoff lopes her horse herself, which means she can be in the saddle for six hours straight. Those nights, she gets leg cramps. She takes all her own food on the road and eats a gluten-free diet to help reduce inflammation. But DeHoff laughs off these concessions to being an “older beginner” and says she feels no hardship.
And the leg cramps? “It’s totally worth it,” she added. “Cutting horses give me way more than they take.”
After training for a year, DeHoff began competing. Last spring, she won reserve champion in the NCHA Heartland Circuit Weekend $15K Amateur and has more than $5,000 in NCHA earnings so far.
Her main focus now is to “get better and better.”
One thing she finds remarkable about the cutting world is how helpful everyone is. “It always amazes me; these men and women have big-time clients, but their disposition is that they’re there to help. I appreciate that.”
In many ways, she says, it feels like the cutting world is unique for its open-heartedness. “It’s just the atmosphere and the authenticity of the people; they’re exceptional,” she added.
That same attitude of “we’re all in this together” permeates ranching life, too, DeHoff notes. “What inspires me is, through my daughter Courtenay, I’m getting to know younger women, and they are raising families, working ranches; it’s a hard world. But I love how women today support other women.”
She says she especially appreciates the way Courtenay, founder of Fancy Lady Cowgirl, motivates women to make courageous choices and embrace “cowgirl qualities,” like authenticity, generosity, and hard work.
“When I get up in the morning and my knees creak and it takes five minutes for my back and hips to loosen up so I can stand straight — that’s ranching life, just part of being a cowgirl,” DeHoff said. “Courtenay tells the next generation of girls and women to make sure whatever they do is something they love and to never quit. So, I keep going.
“Cutting is what I love,” DeHoff continued. “Instead of doing Sudoku puzzles, I’ll be cutting to keep my mind right.”

Meet six NCHA members who have recently celebrated earning $1,000 in NCHA-approved weekend classes and won a beautiful achievement buckle.
By Roger Munford
Stepping into the Stirrup
Steve Gray, 62, hadn’t ridden a horse until six years ago, and it was tough to start. Gray, who hails from Roland, Oklahoma, spoke about encountering a cutting legend who profoundly altered his life. “I was about to surrender the cause when I met a gentleman named Teddy Johnson, sadly, now deceased. Teddy was an NCHA judge and an accomplished cutting horse trainer, and he turned things around for me.”
Gray has shown his horse, Be There Suen, five times this year and has gone to the pay window four times. He competes mainly in Carthage, Missouri, but has also attended a show in Ada, Oklahoma.
“I really enjoy cutting. I like the NCHA events and the horses, but what has kept me going is the family-like atmosphere of the shows,” he said. “Everybody hopes everybody does good. It’s the friendliness of the people you’re around.”
Gray owns two Kubota dealerships, one in Poteau, Oklahoma, and the other in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He is also the pastor of a small rural church in Roland.
“My wife, Bridget, supports me. She’s with me at every show,” he said. “I also have two best friends, Dale Henry and Ken Farrow, and we three get together, practice cutting, and have fun.”
He also credits Tommy and Susan Marvin, his trainers. “They are absolutely wonderful people.”
The Dance
“I was raised with horses. My dad, Bill Klop, was a team penner for 15 years,” said Joanna Lefebvre, 44, who lives in Agassiz, British Columbia, Canada. “I grew up on a horse, but when I went to university, I put that on the shelf and then went to nursing school. Watching my dad’s journey evolve to cutting, I also fell in love with the sport. In March 2023, I took my first clinic with Gerry Hansma, and I was hooked.”
Lefebvre attended the NCHA show in May 2024 at the Bellcreek Arena in Chilliwack and became the Aggregate Champion, earning enough prize money to win the NCHA Achievement Buckle. Her mare is named Bama Red (“Scar-
lett”), and Gregg Garvie trained her in Millarville, Alberta.
“I love the dance of cutting. The intensity of it. It’s like patting your head, rubbing your stomach, and jumping on the spot all at the same time,” she said. “The community’s amazing, too. So super supportive."
When she’s not cutting, Lefebvre manages a funeral home for Dignity Memorial Funeral Homes but can also be found riding her Harley-Davidson Sportster.
“My dad does all the training with me, and my mom is a huge supporter at every show,” she said. “My husband, Stacy, and my children, Jackson and Amber, are there to cheer me on. And, of course, my trainer, Glen Beveridge from GD Cutting Horses is always there to keep Scarlett and me tuned up and ready to show.”
A Worldwide Community
Robin van den Elzen has been riding horses since she was seven: first in dressage and then Western. For the past three years, she has focused solely on cutting and becoming a team with her horse, Rey Cat 31.
Van den Elzen lives in Schinnen, in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands, and the events she competes in

are spread across Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. “I try to attend as many events as possible to learn and make good progress,” she said. “What I like most is my horse’s agility, precision, and performance, and how the cutting community is one big family that helps each other in the arena.”
When she’s not riding a horse, Van den Elzen, 28, is a parttime truck driver and administrative assistant.
“I’m so proud to have won the NCHA Achievement Buckle,” she said. “I credit my dad, Rob van den Elzen, for being my mentor and my trainer, and Tim van Ewijk of T&C Western Stables. My goal is to win the Americana (one of the top Western equine events in Europe) one day.”
Icing on the Cake
“My family is in Thoroughbred racing, so I grew up around horses. But I was never really into it,” said Dave Ziebarth, 48, of Belgrade, Montana. “Three years ago, a friend suggested I see a cutting trainer up here, Mike Hoffman. While I watched him work the flag, I thought to myself, ‘This is what I want to do.’” He let me have a go, and I barely stayed on, but I was instantly hooked.”
Ziebarth now has four cutting horses, and his daughter, Zoe, also rides.
“Smoother Lookin Cat is crazy and awesome at the same time, so we get along real fine. And my little mare, Smooth Reyzin Cash, is just the cutest little girl, and they’re completely different rides,” he said. “I’m proud to win the NCHA Achievement Buckle, but winning is just the icing on the cake. I would be thrilled if I were working a cow and they didn’t give me a score — we’re so blessed to be doing this.”
Ziebarth competes in the NCHA Big Sky Circuit in Montana and Wyoming, but also travels to Idaho and Utah for events.
“I manage a gun shop, but all my money goes into horses and training,” he said. “When I get home, I hop on a horse and ride with my wife, Paige, and the dogs, and I get to decompress from dealing with humans all day.”
His mother, Pamela C. Ziebarth, along with his grandmother, the late Cecilia “Cee” Straub-Rubens, bred and raced Horse of the Year and two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow. His mother also owns multiple graded stakes winner Tiz Flirtatious, and stallions Tizbud and Tizdejavu.
“She’s pretty cool. She’s a woman in the good old boys club of Thoroughbred racing,” he said. “Yeah, she’s a badass and just also the sweetest person ever.”
Giving It All
“I first got started in high school,” said Chelsea Stayton, 33, who lives in Port Orchard, Washington. “I was playing around with
reigning at the time, but my best friend showed cutters and said, ‘You need to do this instead.’ I was completely hooked.”
Life after high school took over, and she couldn’t get back into cutting until 2022. Then, she bought a ten-yearold mare named Kaceebar Red Berry. “I just love how exhilarating cutting is,” she said. “It’s something I wish everybody could experience. ”
Stayton mainly competes in the NCHA Pioneer Circuit. “One of my goals this year was to win the NCHA Achievement Buckle, and I am super excited to show it off at my next event,” she said.
When Stayton isn’t cutting, she focuses on fitness, including Olympic weightlifting. “That takes a lot of my time, but it helps me in my career as a firefighter,” she said.
“My family are my biggest supporters,” Stayton added. “Also, my trainer, Nina Lundgren, is an amazing teacher, and I wouldn’t be where I am in this sport without her.”
Passing on the Tradition
“I had a cutting mare about 15 years ago, but our family took over a horse boarding and training business, so I didn’t have the time to cut for a long time,” said Kelly

Ebert, 63, who is based in New Tripoli, Pennsylvania. “Then, two years ago, I bought a three-year-old showing at the All American Quarter Horse Congress from (NCHA Hall of Fame member) Tracy Barton’s barn.” Ebert started showing on her new gelding, Smart Little Kiddo, last year in the NCHA Appalachian Circuit in the $5K Novice Horse class.
Ebert trains horses for a living, primarily Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. Her husband, Kevin, doesn’t cut, but he supports her by looking after the farm while she competes, as does her daughter, Shannon. Her good friend, Denise Jones, encouraged her back into the cutting world, and they enjoy competing at shows together.
“I am so proud to have won the NCHA Achievement Buckle,” she said. “My next dream is to pass Smart Little Kiddo on to my grandsons. The eldest, Trexler, is seven, and his brother, Tawson, is four. They’re riding but not cutting. They play with the flag and the mechanical cow right now, but I think they’ll start soon. In the meantime, I bought a yearling down in Texas last year, and I hope to bring her along next year.”

Advancing Equine Reproductive Techniques
The Department of Animal Science at Tarleton State University is making significant strides in advancing equine reproductive technologies, with a particular focus on embryo transfer and other assisted reproductive techniques. Our research is working towards bridging the gap between innovation and practical application in the industry.
Our efforts include understanding the optimal physiological status of the mare to stabilize the uterine environment for early embryonic survival. In collaboration with renowned breeding programs, we are refining practices such as semen and oocyte processing for techniques like Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). These advanced techniques are becoming increasingly common in equine breeding programs, and our research aims to enhance their effectiveness and accessibility for breeders, improving both fertilization rates and embryo viability.
A distinctive aspect of our program is how we integrate these cutting-edge experiences into the classroom. Students gain hands-on experience with mare management and hormone protocols essential for successful breeding and embryo transfer programs. This practical knowledge is crucial for effective communication with mare owners and veterinarians, ensuring a cohesive approach to reproductive management.
Through this integration of research and education, our students develop a thorough understanding of both the science and the practicalities of equine reproduction. They graduate with the skills and insights needed to make significant contributions to the equine industry, whether in breeding operations, veterinary practices, or further academic research.
At Tarleton State, we are dedicated to advancing equine science and are well-positioned to become a leading force in the field. Our strategic location and commitment to innovation drive us to equip the next generation of leaders with the tools and experiences they need to excel in this dynamic industry.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our industry partners for their invaluable contributions, which enrich these experiences and support our goals.

The “miracle boy” on Rubi at the 2024 NCHA Foundation Scholarship Cutting during Youth Week at the NCHA Great American Insurance Group Summer Cutting Spectacular event in Fort Worth where he made the finals.

BY MARIANNE DOUGHERTY
After a horrific car accident when he was 10, doctors thought Porter Hulme would never walk again. But with sheer determination and the love of a horse named Rubi, Porter is not only walking, but also back in the cutting arena.
Porter Hulme and his brother Ethan, 17, were on their way home from a team roping in Decatur, Texas, on May 28, 2022, when they blew a tire. When a second tire blew and the tag-along trailer became detached, the Ford F350 pickup tumbled over three times before it came to a stop, like a coaster stuck upside down at the top of a loop. Suspended from the roller roof of the cab by the crushing weight of his seatbelt, Ethan managed to extricate himself and crawl through a window, but he couldn’t find his brother. Porter’s seatbelt had malfunctioned, and he’d been thrown clear of the truck. Ethan found him pinned under the “headache rack,” which is designed to prevent items from sliding into the cab’s rear.
Shards of glass in his hair, cuts and abrasions on his arms and back, Ethan was struggling to lift the one-ton truck himself when someone stopped to help. When he gave up, Ethan insisted that they had to keep trying. Ultimately, it took a dozen good Samaritans to lift the truck just enough that Ethan was able to drag his brother out from under the wreckage. They’d been hauling their horses: Ethan’s good black gelding, “Fez,” and a bay gelding named “Roger.” Miraculously Roger
survived, and against all odds, so did Porter.
By now an ambulance had arrived, and so had Porter’s mother, Kimberly, who accompanied her sons to United Regional Hospital in Wichita Falls. From there Porter was transferred to Cook’s Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, where doctors assessed the extent of his injuries, including broken ribs, a broken collar bone, a broken arm, and more significantly, damage to the thoracic spinal column, which is comprised of 12 vertebrae. The largest of the thoracic vertebrae is the T12. If damage is extensive, as it was in Porter’s case, the outcome is most often paralysis from the waist down. “Porter’s T12 was basically gone,” said his father, Scott Hulme. “The surgeon told us he’d never walk again.”
What he could do was wiggle his toes. It wasn’t much to go on, but Scott and Kimberly decided that maybe their son had a chance. “The doctor told us that Porter’s spinal cord was so messed up that he’d never have the strength to walk even if he could move his toes,” said Scott, who decided not to share that information with his son at the time. “I didn’t want that in his head.”
Porter had been hospitalized for about a month and a half when he told his father he wanted to see Rubi, a cutting horse he had encouraged Scott to buy when she was a yearling. “He kind of picked her out for himself,” said Scott, “and I trained her.” The ambulance garage was large enough to accommodate Scott’s truck and trailer, and Kimberly brought Porter down in a wheelchair. Rubi nickered and dropped her head so Porter could pet her. “That day, my son told me he was going to get better,” said Scott, “and I believed him.”
The next day, with help, Porter used a walker to take his first steps. A full recovery would require nine months of physical therapy twice a week in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Porter’s therapists called him their miracle boy. “When he was in rehab, I made him promise that he’d work harder than anyone else,” Scott said, “and he made me promise that I’d never sell Rubi, because he was going to get better so he could show her.” On August 2, Porter went home, and the first thing his father did was take him out to the barn to see Rubi. “I think being around the horses gave him a reason to get better,” Scott said.
After three or four weeks, Porter was able to take a few steps without the walker, but progress was incremental. “Every morning I’d take him out to the barn in a wheelchair and sit him by my cutting arena so he could watch me working the cutting horses,” Scott said. “One day, he pulled himself out of his chair and stood there for a minute or so.” Eventually, Porter began taking a few steps without assistance. When he went to the hospital for a checkup after Labor Day, Porter walked in on his own. “The doctors couldn’t believe it,” Scott said.
By October, Porter was eager to ride again, but Scott thought it was too soon. Finally, Porter wore him down. “There’s nothing worse than a kid wanting to ride a horse and not being able to,” said Scott, who gave in and saddled up Roger. Porter rode him for about twenty minutes, but it was a start.
“Pray
In 2023, father and son hauled Rubi to every show on the circuit, and Porter warmed her up before each of them. As it turned out, Porter was right about Rubi. That year Scott won the NCHA 5K Novice World Championship with Red Hot Rubi (Spots Hot x Ruby Red Cat x High Brow Cat). “After I got done, I told Porter that now it was his turn to show her,” said Scott, who has only been cutting for about ten years, while Porter was participating in club cuttings at four

and joined the National Youth Cutting Horse Association (NYCHA) when he was eight.
On July 25 and 26, 2024, Porter competed in the NCHA Foundation Scholarship Cutting during Youth Week at the NCHA Great American Insurance Group Summer Cutting Spectacular in Fort Worth, where he made the finals. “They took the top 15 out of 75 kids,” said Scott with obvious pride. “Now we’ve got to keep hauling until the end of May and see if we can win a world title for Porter on Rubi.”
Scott and Kimberly raise cattle on their ranch in Vernon, Texas, where they have about 250 cows. “We run on a little over 5,000 acres here,” said Scott, who limits the number of cutting horses he trains so he can spend quality time with each one. Both Scott and Kimberly are grateful for the ranchers and breeders, all members of the NCHA, who held fundraisers with the hashtag #prayforporter to help offset their son’s staggering medical bills. Werner Equine Company, owners of Ain’t Seen Iceman Yet, auctioned off one breeding with a live foal guarantee, earmarking 100 percent of the
proceeds for the Hulme family. Bar G Barrel Productions put on a benefit barrel race and silent auction. MP3 Barrel Productions held a benefit barrel race with a bake sale and silent auction. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. “There were numerous other fundraisers,” said Kimberly. “People literally from all over the world wanted to help.”
“The hospital bill was nearly $2 million,” Scott said. “We’ll probably never pay that off.” Even so, last year he declined an offer of a quarter of a million dollars for Rubi. “There isn’t any amount of money that would make me break my promise to Porter,” he said. “What kind of dad would I be if I did that?”
While Scott allows that he doesn’t come from “a whole bunch of money or a long line of people into cutting,” he is convinced that all it takes to excel at the sport of cutting is willpower. “The point is to never give up,” he said.
Giving up was certainly not an option for Porter Hulme, who applied the same focus and discipline required to be a champion in the cutting arena to his miraculous recovery.

Cutters employ a peculiar mix of routines, mental exercises, and superstitions prior to competition.
One might wiggle his shoulders. Another may lick his fingers, light a candle, listen to a recording of ocean waves, or stash a plastic horse figurine in his chaps pocket. The quirks of cutting horse competitors before showing their horse can be peculiar, if not outright bizarre. But whatever it takes to get them locked in and ready to lay down a scorching run, they’ll do it.
“It’s like batters in Major League Baseball,” said Grant Setnicka of Grandview, Texas. “They’ll have some little thing they do each time before they step in the batter’s box, like adjust the Velcro on their gloves.”
Here, Setnicka and five other cutting horse trainers discuss their pre-show rituals, whether they be habits, superstitions, or routines that get their mind right.
Lloyd Cox piloting Sho Boat in the show pen.
Like many cutters, Cox has a pre-show ritual.
“Iwipe the sweat off my brow, squish my hat down, and adjust my chaps,” said J.P. Bell of Duluth, Minnesota. “I do better when I’m intense. When I was showing Apollo Creed at the NCHA World Finals, I would slap myself in the face a couple times just before showing.
“A couple guys came and said, ‘Can we do that for you?’” Bell added with a laugh. “I said, ‘I’m sure you’d like to.’ But it’s good to have a ritual of things that get you into the moment.”
Some competitors simply follow a checklist of necessary tasks that prepare them to show, and it becomes a noticeable habit. Lloyd Cox of Marietta, Oklahoma, goes through the standard procedures of watching cows, warming up his horse, and discussing which cows to cut with his help. But just before riding to the herd, he carries out his signature ritual of licking his fingers on each of his hands. He said it’s not a superstition or any kind of mental trigger.
“My fingers and my hands just get dry,” Cox explained. “And it makes the reins feel slippery, so I lick my fingers. It helps me get a better grip on the reins.”
Like many competitors, Cox also takes a pinch of snuff before showing. Years ago, more cutters would smoke, and quite a few cigarettes were sucked down to butts in a hurry back then.
“Greg Welch would take that one, real long pull on that cigarette just as he was getting ready to ride to the herd, and then he’d drop it down in the dirt,” recalled Weatherford, Texas, trainer Winston Hansma.
Plenty of competitors make a point to sip on some water or an energy drink. Many do various things to keep from getting nervous or tense, such as taking deep breaths or stretching their muscles.
“When I ride to the herd, I usually shake my shoulders to loosen them up a little bit,” said Monty Buntin of Lincoln, California. “When the pressure is high, I typically do that. That’s just a habit I picked up as a teenager when I was working for Tim Smith. He would do that.”
Buntin added that the mental approach is a major factor in preparation. “Throughout the day that I show, I run show scenarios in my mind as if they’re going well. I don’t allow myself to think about things that can go wrong. I picture things in my mind going the way I want them to go,” Buntin said. “It keeps me from showing with a desperate energy. If you’re afraid of missing a cut or missing a cow, then you show with a desperation. It makes your timing snappy and throws everything off.”
Hansma remembers when cutters began to embrace

visualization techniques and other mental exercises several decades ago. “I remember some guys who would go to sleep the night before with a tape of ocean waves playing,” he said. “It was supposed to have a calming effect. I started imagining runs in my mind, but really, after a while I had to scale it back. I could get myself too wound up.
“There is a lot to mental preparation before you ride to the herd,” Hansma continued. “But you need to figure out what it takes to get yourself mentally prepared. That’s part of figuring out how to win.”
Bell said finding the right frame of mind can be more of a challenge today than in the past, thanks to the cascade of distractions available through the ever-present smartphone. “I think that’s key, and it’s hard to do nowadays,” he said. “We’re a slave to our phones. If I’m showing, I leave my phone in the truck or at the stalls a good two or three hours before I show. I want to get away from the thing. There are a lot of texts that might distract me, or I’m apt to go through Facebook, see some things that might be negative.
“It’s important to stay positive,” he explained. “You can’t let anything get in the way of that. Even the people you visit with before you show, you want to be around people who are upbeat. You don’t want to have conversations with people
who bring you down.”
Superstitions can also generate negative vibes. Black cats, yellow shirts, and hats on beds are a few things traditionally viewed as bad luck. Fortunately, none of the trainers interviewed claimed to be hopelessly superstitious — or admitted to it.
“I would say I’m superstitious-ish,” Setnicka allowed. “I know there are guys that don’t like the color yellow, or they have certain seats in the cow box they have to sit in. If a black cat runs in front of me before a show, I’m going to try and block that out. I guess if something like that bothers you, then you are superstitious. But I try not to let things affect me because at the end of the day, I’ve got a job to do. You want to make sure you don’t have any distractions.”
Hansma agreed that believing in bad luck is a bit silly, but it can still seep into your mind. “Well, I’m probably like everybody: I don’t think I’m superstitious, but I wouldn’t put my hat on my bed or wear a yellow shirt,” he said with a laugh. “It’s just to eliminate a variable. I had to learn to appreciate how many things have to come together to have a winning performance. So even though I don’t think those [symbols of bad luck] make any difference, I’m just not going to go there.”
Geoffrey “Spud” Sheehan of Weatherford, Texas, doesn’t

believe in bad luck – well, sort of. “I’m not going to say, ‘I don’t believe in luck,’” he said. “But I believe you’ve got to make your own luck, and not rely on luck.
“Funny story, though: Adan Bañuelos is one of my good friends. When he won the Futurity, he had this white buffalo hair in his pocket. After that, he broke some of it off and gave it to me. The first show I went to was The Cattlemens [Derby and Classic], and I never advanced one horse to the finals. The next show was the [NCHA] Super Stakes, and I was having a terrible show. I still had this white buffalo hair, and finally I’m like, ‘I don’t want it. Obviously, I got the unlucky half.’ I threw it away, and after I got rid of it, I won the Super Stakes [6/7 Open on Hiss N Vinegar in 2021]. So that’s what I mean: I didn’t necessarily believe in that buffalo hair, but I was kind of cursed that I had it.”
Sheehan and other cutters roll out a long list of things some competitors do for good fortune, such as light a candle, use a special saddle pad, listen to a certain song, or wear a lucky shirt.
Bell carries a photograph of his children and tucks a little,

plastic horse from his daughter in his pocket before showing. He also keeps a unique feather in his hat. “A rodeo cowboy hand-painted this feather,” Bell said. “The painting is of my mother on a Paint gelding. It was the last ride I ever took with her before she passed several years ago. There is also a photo of her and a Hereford steer she had as a teenager. Those two images are on that feather. Whether I have on a straw or a felt, that feather is in my hat, so I feel my mom is with me all the time.”
Bell said he doesn’t view those mementos he carries as good luck charms, but more as sources of motivation. “It’s a way to honor my family and something to cherish,” he said. “I think things like that can take you back to your roots. They can get you in a good place in a hurry.”
In the months prior to showing, preparation obviously requires consistent and disciplined work on a daily basis. But in the moments before riding into the herd, the competitor’s frame of mind factors heavily into the final outcome.
“I always tell people this is 99 percent mental, and the rest is how you think about it,” Buntin said.

Capturing a World Championship Title at the NCHA World Finals is a feat reserved for the most determined competitors.
Here’s what the experience is like.
BY ABIGAIL BOATWRIGHT
Cutting enthusiasts have many awards to strive for in NCHA competitions. From the major events down to the weekend cuttings, the opportunities to show your horse for top prizes and honors are numerous. But there’s one title that requires stamina as well as sheer talent — a World Championship. It requires extensive hauling to weekend shows throughout the year to earn enough money to be ranked in the Top 15 of each division that qualifies for World Finals. But for those who do attain this honor, the memory lasts forever.
The Origin
Since the first World Finals in 1946, riders aspiring to win a championship have put in the time weekend after weekend at local cutting events. Each year, 11 World Champions are crowned. From the first World Champion crowned at the World Finals, Benny Binion’s Gelding, qualifying for the World Open Finals and then topping the competitors at the event takes grit and determination — and strategy.
The Meaning of it All
Mike Wood is a trainer located in Scottsdale, Arizona, and alongside training and showing aged event cutting horses, he also coaches Non-Pro and Youth clients. His clients are no strangers to the World Finals — he’s had as many as 16 entries in the event in one year come from his barn, across Novice, Non-Pro, Amateur, and Open divisions, and has trained several World Champions. Wood himself won the Open World Championship in 2020 on Little Jackson Cat. “It takes commitment and determination to get to the World Finals,” Wood said. “I joke that it also

EXPLAINING THE FORMAT
To show at the World Finals, competitors may show as many times as it takes throughout the year to acquire enough earnings to hit the top 15 in their division. To win a World Championship, riders will have won the most money in their class that qualifying year. To win a World Finals show title, competitors have to win their class at the show.
It is possible to win a World Finals title, and win the World Championship but not a requirement. The two titles can be won together or separate depending on year earnings and World Finals show. opposite and this page :
takes blood, sweat, and tears. You have to haul to show after show to qualify for the World Finals. It takes a lot of mental and physical determination to do that, even if you had a bad show. You still have to get in the truck and go. And it’s not an easy task.”
Mary Jo Milner lives in Southlake, Texas. The NCHA Hall of Famer has won eight Non-Pro World Championship titles, seven reserve titles, and since 1972, she’s earned 24 Non-Pro Top 10 finishes. She says she leans on character and faith, as well as top equine partners, to win.
“It takes dedication, focus, and good horses most importantly,” Milner said. “And probably a lot of praying. I do a lot of praying from the standpoint of wanting to be one with God.”
Phil Rapp is the No. 2 NCHA money-earning competitor with over $9.4 million. The NCHA Open and Non-Pro Hall of Fame inductee from Weatherford, Texas, won an Open World Championship in 2012, and the World Finals in 2013. Although Rapp has won many awards over the years, these titles mean a lot because of the time, effort, and strategy required.
“To qualify for the World Finals, it’s an accumulation of a year’s work,” Rapp said. “And when you get there, within the finals, it’s a four go-round format, and that fifth non-working finals is so important. I always strived for consistency at the finals, to advance as high in the standings as I could once I was there, and also try to be as successful as I could in that final.”
Matt Gaines of Weatherford is NCHA’s No. 3 all-
above :
time leading Open rider, with over $9 million in LTE. He’s qualified for the World Finals several times, and won a World Championship in 2015 on Special Nu Baby. He says the path to this award is challenging, especially because of the quality of horses and riders also chasing these titles.
“I think it’s a lot harder than a lot of people think it is. Of course, the better horse you have, the easier it can be,” Gaines said. “But it’s a long year. It’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint.”
Tom Lyons of Grandview, Texas, has spent decades training and showing cutting horses. He won World Championships in 1980 and 1981. He says even if you’ve campaigned well all year, sometimes, the money you win during the four rounds of the finals makes all the difference.
“It all comes down to that, and your horse has got to be sharp there,” Lyons said. “And you better win some money. No lead is too big.”
The Horses
It takes a special kind of horse to make it to the World Finals and win a World Championship. Often the horse has aged out of the six-and-under categories. Wood says the right horse has to be consistent and able to handle many different situations.
“He [or she] has to be able to haul well in the trailer, be comfortable in a new setting, and be able to haul many miles, seeing many different kinds of cows, on all kinds of ground,” Wood said.
Eight-time Non-Pro World Champion, Mary Jo Milner is seen cutting a hereford from the herd.

Tom Lyons won two Open World Championships back-to-back in 1980 and 1981. Lyons is pictured below riding Doc N Willy owned by Edwin B. Jones.
Milner took Playboys Kid (Freckles Playboy x Docsagin x Doc Bar) to the 1986 World Finals, which were held in Houston, Texas, that year. She says the journey to get there was exciting, and the consistency was encouraging. And the finals were thrilling thanks to the electric atmosphere and crowd watching.
“He was a very homely horse, but he was very athletic,” Milner said. “I really didn’t go down there thinking about winning. I went down there just thoroughly enjoying and trusting the run. I ended up winning all four goes and the Houston Livestock Show that year, and it’s the best memory I have when I have a spell of not doing very well. I just like to think about that show.”
Milner enjoys showing one horse for the World Finals campaign.
“I’ve shown each horse around four years, keeping them sound and taking care of them,” Milner said. “To me, the joy is the horse. It’s teamwork, and I like to think of it as a oneness.”
The right horse for a World Finals campaign has to be sound and gritty, but also intelligent, Rapp said.
“You want a horse that can take the day to day and the grit of it — the horses go through the rigors from different arenas, cattle types, ground types,” Rapp said. “So those horses have to be gritty that way. They also have to be very intelligent because those horses are cutting different breeds of cattle. And they have to have the ability to read the situation.”
Rapp likes how close you get with a horse while going down the road to qualify.
“You got to know that horse so well, and it felt like how cutting was enjoyable for me as a Youth rider and as a Non-Pro, where I wasn’t showing so many different horses,” Rapp said. “You had one or two horses to show. You really knew that horse well, and you would challenge that horse for what it could handle, and you really got to be a team. And that was a lot of fun to be able to show that horse. It’s a lot of satisfaction, and it gets back to the basics of cutting, cutting a good cow on a good horse and enjoying the ride.”
Gaines showed Special Nu Baby (Dual Rey x Nu I Wood x Zack T Wood) in 2015, and he took her to a few shows early in the year with mixed results.
“But then I took her to the cutting in San Antonio in February, and I won,” Gaines said. “From that point on, she just kept getting better and better. I think they had eight Mercurias [events] that year and I won six of them.
She was just so good at that point in her career that she was hard to beat, and everything kind of fell in place for us. By the time we got to the World Finals, nobody could catch me.”
Gaines enjoyed showing the mare immensely.
“She was just so special. You never knew what was going to happen, but you knew it was going to be pretty good,” Gaines said. “My last run on her at the World Finals, I think I marked a 31, I won the last round. And that was the last run she ever made. That whole year with her was really special.”
In 2021, Gaines was in a tight race against Randy Chartier. The World Championship came down to the final round of the World Finals, and Gaines only won by a few thousand dollars.
“That shows you two different scenarios of how it can go when you try to win the World Championship,” Gaines said. “You go through a lot of ups and downs. There’s a lot that goes into it.”
Going for a World Championship allows horses that have aged out of other categories to shine, Gaines said.
“When you have that horse, one that you think is good enough to win a world title on, it’s fun, it’s exciting to do, and it’s a challenge,” Gaines said.
In 1980, Lyons was campaigning on a horse named Doc N Willy (Doc’s Lynx x Willoa x Poco Willy). He recalls his main competitor in hauling for the title was Buster Welch on Peppy San Badger or “Little Peppy.”
“Winning against him was a big gigantic deal, because the King Ranch owned him, and he was a fabulous

horse,” Lyons recalled. “He had won the Futurity and the Derby, and he was a very tough horse to beat. A very good, fancy horse.”
Doc N Willy was also a good horse, so they were often neck-and-neck.
“That was quite the lucky year for me, and going into the finals, either horse could have won,” Lyons said.
Lyons won by around $7,300 that year. Spending so much time together brought the horseman close with “Willy.” They also made many memories. “He was a strange little horse, but a very, very good cow horse,” Lyons said with a smile.
Planning and Strategy
Rapp goes into a World Finals campaign with the mindset of trying to keep the horse correct. Sometimes he’ll end up schooling the horse in the pen at some shows earlier in the season to keep them in the right structure. He tries to remember that the World Finals is a marathon, not a dash.
“To some extent, going in there to get a check is correct — if you don’t get a check, you can’t win any money,” Rapp said. “But with that being said, I’ve always had the mindset that if my horse is being correct, maybe cheating a little bit, sometimes you’ve got to go in there and take the opportunity to school the horse and forfeit the check a time or two, so you can win a bigger check later on.”
The Community Aspect
Driving for a World Championship often brings the cutting horse community together. Wood says the World
WORLD FINALS ADVICE
Mike Wood had someone brand-new to the World Finals going to the event this year, and it reminded him of what he loves about the event. “It’s so exciting to see someone new make the World Finals, and be excited,” Wood said. “It’s a highlight of the year for cutters. It’s like making it to the NFR. It’s a lofty goal, but if you’re able to go for it, I would recommend it. Getting to show in new places and getting to meet new people is a great opportunity.”
Finals is an ideal way to get involved and meet fellow cutters from around the country.
“We love cutting, we love the cutting family, and we love the horse — and this is a great way to express that love and enjoy cutting,” Wood said. “We enjoy going to different shows all over the country. We were just in Texas, and then we were in Washington State.”
When asked why she’s set and reached this goal so many times, Milner points to her love for cutting. But she also appreciates how the drive for the World Finals helped bring her family together.
“I love the sport, and I love the people in it,” Milner said. “I look forward to seeing friends around in all of the states. I feel like this has helped me raise my family. It’s had an influence on my children, my grandchildren, and now I have six great-grandchildren who I’m hoping will get a start before long. That’s my biggest treasure.”
Lyons says getting to know other competitors is a great benefit to running for the World Finals. He remains close with many he was running against in those years, even now.
“You’re in tight and close with all your competition,” Lyons said. “We often helped each other. It’s strange in our game that you have to depend on your competition to help you win.”
Looking back on those years spent chasing the World Finals titles, Lyons says the work is worth it.
“It’s just one of the highlights of your life,” Lyons said. “Working hard at it and being crowned World Champion. You get up every morning, stay up late, and drive a billion miles. To me, it was all worth it.”

TRUE TEXAS
The Cutting Enthusiast
Each day, Jerry Sienko eagerly observed, passionately supported, and enthusiastically scored each competitor at the Breeder’s Invitational in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

and
article by Jessica Gryder
Arenas rumbled with excitement and anticipation as crowd favorites walked past the timeline. All was still as the rider and their help selected a cow from the herd. Once in position, the rider’s hand dropped – and the cheering began. Dedicated fans knew their favorite pairings of horse and rider well, from the carefully selected sire and dam through the horse's futurity year and how they scored each show afterward. Such is it with Jerry Sienko – a man whose passion for the sport of cutting was noticed by trainers and owners alike at the Breeder’s Invitational.
Living in Oklahoma, Sienko has attended the Breeder’s Invitational each year since 2017 and pointed out: “A friend suggested I go to the horse show and when I did…I was hooked. I was attending every horse show throughout that summer and fall.
“The thing that did it,” added Sienko, “was that [cutting] is total ranch work…and that was my dream. If I was 40 years younger, I would be doing this. This sport is the most genuine of equestrian sports, and I’ve always felt like I belong.”
Originally from New Jersey, Sienko explained any equestrian events were few and far between. Manufacturing and textile companies surrounded his small town leaving him yearning for the horsemanship his forefathers experienced. “My ancestry had something to do with horses or maybe my father growing up on a ranch in Maine; maybe that translated to me. Perhaps it’s in my DNA. I remember when I was maybe a year old and my dad would be on the couch and he’d have some Western on. That partially explains my interest.”
Although Sienko depends solely on public transportation, his passion drives him to learn more about the
sport he loves. “I go to the library and research on the cutting industry. Just this past week, I discovered that this particular show was originally in Nevada. I found that out looking up past shows,” shared Sienko. Other research included scoring and judging past shows.
Sienko enjoyed taking notes and writing scores for each participant he saw on that day’s draw sheet. “Heck, I root all of them on,” he exclaimed. “I wish all of them could come out with a 225 or higher.”
His daily hardware included binoculars and a cushion for the stadium seats. “I use the binoculars because I’m looking at the eyes of the horse. You can’t tell that on the monitor but with the binoculars, you can see the intensity of their eyes. That’s what’s really fun to see: how focused the horse is. Even when the buzzer sounds, the horse is still engaged.
“This is ‘Old West’ in present times,” added Sienko. “When the show ends, I’m sad…cutting is fascinating and addicting. My other activities get put on hold when this show comes around.”

WELCOME LETTER
Welcome to the 2024 Metallic Cat World Championship Futurity and World Finals presented by Broke Spur Ranch! Over the next four weeks, new champions will be crowned, and the memories made will be talked about for years to come.
The resolution that goes into training these three-year-olds is beyond commendable. Rising each day and continuing the training that was implemented the day before, day in and day out, requires an immense level of determination and patience that only a few have. Its why cutting is a passionate favorite of each and every one of our fans, and it can be traced back to the ranching heritage that the cutting horse community represents.
The same backbone and spirit can be seen in the NCHA Weekend warriors. Over the past year, these men and women have given up their time and personal lives to compete in a sport that they devotedly pursue. I would like to applaud the finalists for this year’s World Finals presented by Broke Spur Ranch, as your efforts and competitive spirits have not gone unnoticed. I look forward to an immensely competitive World Finals!
Congratulations to each one of our competitors, and good luck! We will be cheering you on from the moment you walk past the timeline.
Sincerely,
Mark Senn NCHA President

Maximize Your Success
Participating in the NCHA Stallion & Foal Program offers breeders and stallion owners an exceptional opportunity to optimize their investment.
By Kristin Pitzer
Are you a cutting horse breeder or stallion owner hoping to produce horses for the upper echelon of the sport? If so, you’ll want to make sure you’re participating in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA)’s Stallion & Foal Program.
Any horse of the appropriate age can show at the NCHA Futurity or Summer Spectacular, but in order to compete in the association’s second Triple Crown event, the Super Stakes, horses must be nominated through the Stallion & Foal Program. The NCHA’s second-highest-paying event, the Super Stakes gets its purse from nominator fees — 85 percent goes to the added money, and the other 15 percent is set aside for Sire awards and Foal Nominator awards. The more stallions that are subscribed and foals that are nominated, the larger the payout.
“Our purse is getting up there to the point where you almost can’t afford not to have your foals eligible,” said Rock Hedlund, Chairman of the Stallion Owners and Breeders Committee. “It makes a market for our offspring because only the offspring by the subscribed stallions to the Super Stakes are eligible to compete. It benefits the stallion owner, their offspring, and also the breeder of the offspring.”
Making your foal eligible is a two-step process. To start with, breed to, or buy foals by, subscribed stallions. Owners of enrolled stallions pay a fee of $2,600 annually to participate, and in return, the NCHA provides a list on its website of subscribed stallions to promote breedings to those sires.
“We’ve kept it very affordable for a stallion owner,” said Todd Quirk, Vice-Chairman of the Stallion Owners and Breeders Committee and owner of stallion Badboonarising. “Basically, one stud fee covers your subscription to the program. By
keeping it affordable, we’ve kept enough people in it to keep the program thriving and going forward.”
The next step is to nominate your foals by paying a one-time fee by December 31 of their birth year. The earlier a foal is nominated, the cheaper it will cost — to nominate a weanling, for example, only costs $250, but fees go up as the horse ages.
Even if the foal is sold, the nominator will still get a check if the horse lands in the top three as a 4-year-old. At the 2024 Super Stakes, for example, first through third place in each division received a combined bonus payout of $108,360 total.
That $250 investment could turn into $2,000, $4,000, or even $6,000.
“It’s important that you nominate your foals. That makes the payout better at the Super Stakes, and then that makes the foals more valuable, which affects everything,” Quirk said. “It all works together for the same goal.”
The NCHA will hold a special informational cocktail party with an upcoming date/time listed on NCHA social media pages. Come and learn more about the NCHA Stallion & Foal Incentive Program! For more information, contact Allison Walker, Stallion Foal Program Manager, at awalker@nchacutting.com.
A foal subscribed to the NCHA Stallion & Foal Program is an exciting investment to watch as it grows and flourishes in the show pen.

Endearing Legacy
The plaques lining the NCHA office walls are more than decorative, they honor the association’s best.
By Kate Bradley Byars
To visit the National Cutting Horse Association Hall of Fame, simply walk into the association headquarters. The best of the best of the cutting horse community are on display for each visitor that walks into the NCHA building in Fort Worth, Texas. It’s one way to honor those in an enduring legacy.
The NCHA has segmented the Hall of Fame into Members, Open Rider, NonProfessional Rider, and Horse. Depending on the criteria reached, members can either be inducted on merit or nominated and selected (see sidebar, “Hall of Fame How-To”). It’s an honor that some aspire to, but Jody Galyean, an NCHA member since 1981, says that his inclusion in the
WHO’S WHO
The names gracing the plaques on the walls of the NCHA headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, reads like a who’s who of the cutting world. Here are a few names to look for when visiting.

Paula Wood; NON-PRO HALL OF FAME, 1997; $2,704,682.20

NCHA Open Rider Hall of Fame was a happenstance for his overall goal.
“There are always goals in the back of your mind like NCHA Hall of Fame, but my goal was always to do the best I can and win, and focus on the horse,” said Galyean, a multiple-time NCHA Open Futurity Champion. “I never tried to make it to the Hall of Fame. I was just showing and trying to do well, and when [the Hall of Fame] came, it just happened as I was showing.”
Several horses Galyean trained and rode are included in the Horse’s Hall of Fame, like Playgun. That prideful feeling is akin to 93-year-old Sam Wilson’s pride in knowing his fellow NCHA members recognized his own contributions to the association. Wilson, an NCHA member since 1961, is a past president, previous Executive Committee member, and was inducted into the Open Rider and Members Halls of Fame.
“When they notified me that I had been nominated for the Members, I felt like all the head men and everybody that had known me felt I had done something good for the association,” Wilson recalled. “I had done what I could over a period. I appreciated that people who knew what was going on had recognized what I had tried to contribute. It makes me feel very proud. I did the things I thought were right and that was recognized by keeping me in office and putting me up on that wall.”
Established to recognize individuals who make outstanding contributions and success in the showpen and honor those who have high moral character, good sportsmanship, fairness, and more, Hall of Fame honorees are forever memorialized for all to see. Next time you step into the NCHA lobby, take time to read those who have given their best to the sport.

The National Circuit Program develops 16 unique geographical circuits where cutters compete for points at every NCHA-approved weekend competition. The points are tracked by NCHA and used to calculate circuit standings and circuit championship qualification. At the conclusion of the qualifying deadline, the top 30 in each class are then invited to compete at their local circuit championship. At the conclusion of the point year, 12 circuit contestants will be invited to compete at the National Circuit Championship show held during the 2025 NCHA Super Stakes.
