Introduction Aaaaaaaawwwooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu! A gray wolf howling at the moon. The evil animal of the forests that destroys things and eats humans. No, gray wolves don’t do such things. Mmmm yes they could be dangerous but they never do harm to us. It’s us who destroys them because we cut down the forests. So if you want to learn about the few gray wolves that are left then turn the page and learn about them!

Where do gray wolves live? You can find gray wolves in north of North America, south Alaska and Canada. There are also wolves in Asia but I’m talking about gray wolves that live in America. Wolves live in forests usually in a den. There are up to eight dens in one area. The Wolves that live in those den them form a pack.

Members of a Pack Can you imagine ten to twelve wolves running around like crazy? No, every wolf in a pack has a job. There is a leader and a hunt group. There are some guards, baby sitters and diggers. Of course diggers dig the dens. You see now? Every wolf has a job!

What do Gray Wolves Eat? Gray Wolves are carnivores. (car-ni-vor) They eat: deer, ox, sheep, hens, rabbits, squirrels and trash. (in cities) and in emergencies mice and bark. How? Gray Wolves hunt with the hunt group (look on page three). The leader and the hunt group go off to hunt leaving the old and weak wolves behind and the baby sitter because she has to take care of the pups. The hunt group and the leader are now watching a group of ox. They choose a weak ox and they run out of there hiding place. All the oxen run away but not the weak one. Then the wolves surround their prey. Some wolves jump on the ox and it bleeds. They wait until it loses all its blood and its dead. Now they drag it in the direction of home. They drag it until they get tired. One runs to the dens and calls everybody. Now everybody runs there and enjoys their meal!

Who is the leader Well the leader doesn’t get picked like a president no, the leader is the strongest and biggest male. Once a leader is chosen every wolf has to obey his orders. If somebody wants to do something else a fight begins and who wins? The leader of course! Showing respect is also very important. A wolf turns on his back roles around. So the leader knows you don’t want to fight.

What should you do if you come face to face with a wolf? Suppose you are going for a jog in the forest. You go deeper and deeper until you get tired. You move slower and slower until you walk. Then you hear a growling sound gggrrrrraaawww! What should you do? If you are lucky the wolf runs away. If not use the following steps: #1 stay calm #2 don’t run away #3 check how many wolves there are #4 move to the side of the wolf good luck! Tip never look a wolf in the eyes!

Pups are born Three to ten pups are born in dens. Dens are usually under roots and in sandy banks. The mother can’t go hunting. Other wolves bring her the food. The mother stays with her pups. It’s very warm and dry in a den. When the pups are about three weeks old they come out of the den to explore they fight to test who is the strongest.

Endangered We need to do something because we cut down the forests for paper and we destroy many animals habitats. It’s the roads that make it worse every year. A thousand animals get hit by a car each year. Many houses are built in forests. One day if we don’t do something, there will be no more gray wolves.
