We all love to celebrate the extraordinary gifts of children with Williams syndrome. But what about the unique and even life-threatening challenges?
Each of the nine children pictured here and hundreds of others with Williams required one or more anesthesia-related procedures in the last 12 months. Every surgery is risky, but for those with Williams syndrome the risks are far greater. When anesthesia is required, regardless of the type of procedure, the risk of a major complication such as cardiac arrest is as much as one in five in young children. That is far more risk than any child with Williams syndrome should have to face. That is why the Williams Syndrome Association is striving to raise one million dollars in 2017 for critical research into the major challenges of Williams syndrome - complications of anesthesia, cardiovascular disorders, and the impact of anxiety on mental and physical health. Researchers are optimistic that the answers are within reach. With your help we can make a difference.
