BLEDISLOE CUP FESTIVAL

Stephen Moore of the Wallabies attempts to break through the All Blacks defence.

T

he Bledisloe Cup is contested by the Australia national rugby union team and the New Zealand national rugby union team. It is named after Lord Bledisloe, the former Governor-General of New Zealand who donated the trophy in 1931. The trophy is physically the largest trophy in world rugby. Bledisloe Cup matches happen annually, and include the Rugby Championship fixtures between the two sides. New Zealand has dominated the cup, winning it 10 times in a row (2003–2012).

The Castrol Edge Rugby Championship Round One: New Zealand came to Sydney being the defending champions and the favorites to win the second season of

Castrol Edge TRC. With the Chiefs as 2013 Super Rugby champions after beating the Brumbies in the final, confidence in retaining the Bledisloe Cup is very high in the men in black. The All Blacks is still a balanced combination of experienced players (Hore, Mealamu, McCaw, and Conrad Smith) with high quality young talent (Cruden, Barret, Sam Cane and Aaron Smith). After a 3-0 series sweep of France in last June, head coach Steve Hansen knows that the team can improve from that outcome. The Wallabies as a team are energized under new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie. However, after the first round of TRC we can’t see a small difference between the new Wallabies and the one from the Lions series.Since 2008 Robbie Deans

was building a team to win the RWC 2015 based on the rise of new talent. Playing the B&I Lions was a great experience for the younger Wallabies. With this foundation, Ewen McKenzie has a unique chance to become the most successful Wallabies coach of the professional era so far.

His Bulldogs, after a slow and difficult start both on and off the field, are starting to show the brand of footy that saw them be Grand Finalists last year. His time at Belmore has been interrupted with knee and shoulder injuries. The twentyfive-year-old admits that it was a hard time for him. “First couple of weeks are tough being at home, not being around anybody is pretty tough. Getting outside of home and around the boys again lifted me.” While sitting on the sidelines he saw his close mate Kris Keating snare the halfback position and go on to play the Melbourne Storm in the 2012

when Steven Gerrard led his Liverpool team mates out in front of a bumper crowd of over 95 thousand fans. They were treated to a hearty rendition of You’ll Never Walk alone, which the famous Kop would have been proud of. The Victory fielded a very youthful side, which held its own for the best part of the first half, but poor decision making and finishing prevented them from taking the lead. Andrew Nabbout tested Aussie keeper Brad Jones with a stinging shot before Steven Gerrard expertly side-footed his shot into the bottom corner to give his side the lead midway through the first half. Brendan Rogers obliged the crowd’s chants for Louis Suarez to be brought on and he came on to rapturous applause by the adoring fans although his demeanor after that left more questions than answers. he stakes couldn’t have been higher for the Socceroos going into their last AFC FIFA World Cup Qualifying match. Standing between them and an automatic spot in next year’s show piece event was a youthful Iraqi side which had been rocked by the twin withdrawal andretirement of two of their best players including their captain and talisman Younis Mahmoud.

The Socceroos started the match on the front foot as they went in search of an early goal. They almost had a dream start when in the second minute of the match Robbie Kruse and Australia’s talisman exchanged quick passes only for the ever reliable Cahill to be denied by Noor Sabri who was manning the Iraqi goal. The attacks continued without much success and Australia almost went in front from the most unlikely of all sources when in the 14th minute Sasha Ognenovski muscled his way into the Iraqi goal area during open play but could only send his diving header over the goal from Socceroos Captain Lucas Neill’s cross. Tim Cahill went close to breaking the deadlock with an audacious swivel kick, which went agonizingly wide, and with it another chance went begging. The second half started with the Iraqis taking the game to their hosts and Saif Salman tested Mark Schwarzer in the Australian goal with a long-range effort early in the second half. The Iraqis resolve and confidence grew as the 2nd half progressed as they began spreading passes with ease and precision. Mark Bresciano took it upon himself to break their resistance as he sent a powerful shot narrowly over the cross bar. Socceroos Coach

Holger Osieck decided to ring the changes, and in the 60th minute Tomas Rogic came on in place of the workhorse Brett Holman. Rogic would have become an instant hero had his weak shot not been stopped by Sabri. Osieck almost caused a riot in the stadium when he substituted crowd favorite Tim Cahill in favor of Josh Kennedy. The bean-poled striker, affectionately known as Jesus, vindicated Osieck’s decision to bring him in the 82nd minute as he headed Mark Bresciano’s cross into the bottom corner to send the 80,532 crowd into delirium. By the time the final whistle sounded to signal Australia’s place in next year’s FIFA World Cup, all had been forgiven on the Socceroos bench as Cahill and Osieck were locked in an embrace, like two old friends who hadn’t seen each other for a long time. Australia became the second nation to qualify for the World Cup after Japan. Congratulations to Holger and the team for delivering Australia’s third consecutive appearance at the world cup.

The tournament didn’t through up many surprises till the final, European and World Champions Spain breezed

Italy duly took the Spaniards the full distance only to bow out courtesy of

The Semi final was an all South American affair as Uruguay’s attempts to deny the home team their dream final failed miserably. Brazil’s cause wasn’t helped by David Luiz who wrestled Uruguay’s Diego Lugarno to the round as he was going for to connect with a corner. The referee pointed to the

Soon after Fred put the home side ahead before the new Monaco signing Edinson Cavani restored parity as the Brazilian defenders failed to clear the ball from their penalty box. Paulinho sent the Belo Horizonte crowd into ecstasy and Brazil into the final, when he nodded in an angled header into the Uruguayan net at the far post from a Neymar corner. long time ago, the Portuguese Fernando Pessoa, one of the best poets of all time, said: “All is worthwhile if the soul is not small”. And with this philosophy, to follow your dreams no matter what, one of the most traditional teams of Sydney gained life. In the heart of Marrickville, in 1968, Joaquim Ribero created a club that could bring his own home back to Australia. It was with this ideal, to have a piece of the Island of Madeira and Portugal in Sydney, that Ribero and members of Portuguese community founded the Dulwich Hill. More than forty years have passed since the foundation of the club, and the origins of the team keep intact with the new club president Joe Pinto. But with it, comes a whole history that the team can be proud of. The Arlington Oval Stadium, faithful supporters, tittles and ex-members playing

in the major leagues of the country. A semi professional club that supplies the hungry passion of soccer that the Portuguese community and the residents of Marrickville have. And the fans can see the Dulwich Hill playing the NSW State League 1 this year. With Wally, their new coach this season, ex-socceroos and Hall of Fame distinction at Sydney United F C, the club is breathing fresh air, and now is one of the top teams and leaders of the league. “We have a lot respect for what he is doing for us and we trust that we are going on the right direction with him, believes Manuel Ferreira, the soccer coordinator of the team. The Dulwich Hill goal for the next of the season? Go hard and play hard. Always dreaming of a place where they belong: The Premier League. “This season the club is in transition in many ways as we are trying to regain promotion to premiere league 2 where we have been for the past years and while we focus on that at the moment we are in a very good position on the table and we will be playing in the finals soon,” ensures Manuel.

NSW MINISTER FOR SPORT AND RECREATION

by Lee Reilly

Q1: Tell us about your Debut in First grade?

Q2: Do you have a good Bill “Hollywood” Harrigan story you can share with us?

A: I clearly remember the day (Round five Sunday March 28th 1982, St George Dragons vs. Canberra Raiders), don’t remember much about it to be honest. I know it was at Kogarah Oval and it rained. St George won but I couldn’t tell much about the game itself. I only got two first grade games that year and then spent the rest of the year in reserve grade. Your first game in the elite level is always special.

A: During the 1994 Kangaroo tour I was given a car to use to get around. Bill (Harrigan) was coming over to referee the third Test between Australia and Great Britain. I was leaving the day he arrived. I gave him the keys to the car and told him it’s yours for the rest of the tour. Next time I saw him when he got back to Australia he said thanks for stitching me up in the UK (United Kingdom) with that car, I said, “What are you talking about.” Harrigan replied, “You didn’t tell me it was diesel.” Having filled it with unleaded it broke down on the motorway leaving him stranded in the cold with nowhere to go.

Q4: Who was the most difficult player and best player you refereed?

Q5: Looking back, 1994 was your biggest year as a referee?

A: The most difficult and best player I refereed was Wally Lewis. He was the best player I was ever on the field with over my career. Consistently when he was at his peak, you could always rely on him to do something brilliant in every game. But he was also very difficult on the field. Now everything’s fine when I see Wally, we get on fine. We had a running battle over many seasons whenever I refereed the Brisbane Broncos. Brilliant player.

A: 1994 was clearly my best year. I had State of Origin II at the MCG (his only ever Origin game). I was in the era of Bill Harrigan and Greg McCullum so I tended to be the bridesmaid never the bride. I then went over to the UK for the first two tests of Australia vs. Great Britain. I think test football is always the ultimate; Origin is a fantastic event still is. The noise of the crowd at the MCG was unlike anything I had ever heard. During the national anthem it felt like noise was coming through the ground we were standing on. It was a very overwhelming occasion for the players and referees.

22 facebook.com/TNC SPORT

Q3 How did you get into refereeing? A: That was a bit by accident, coming from a rugby league family my father was a junior club administrator and my older brother was playing SG Ball for Parramatta. I had a crack at playing, wasn’t too good and didn’t enjoy it that much. Through my dad’s affiliation with junior rugby league I was asked would I like to referee. I was given some coaching and got my refereeing ticket at 12 years of age. I wasn’t expecting it to go anywhere and the fact that you got paid was appealing meaning I had some pocket money and it developed quickly after that. I was graded at 18 and made my first grade debut at 25.

‘‘

The most difficult and best player I refereed was Wally Lewis.

Training out of the SRG Thai Boxing Gym corner, Leonie is a few weeks out of her next battle, on the 24th of August, in Townsville QLD, against Shari Ranger. Straight after that she has another bout scheduled for the 14th of October on the Real Hero Show in Homebush, which is set to be the biggest Muay Thai event ever held

Following the original Muay Thai traditions, Leonie also carries the name of her gym under her own “fight name”, Leonie SRG Macks, showing also her absolute devotion and passion for the sport. Being full-time employed sometimes can be an excuse for many, but for Leonie this is her dream and she hits the pads whenever possible! “Being trained by Luis “Macaco” Regis and Matt Douglas make things a lot easier for me. or the last three seasons, one team and one driver have dominated Formula 1, and in 2013, Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull look likely to reign supreme once more. At the halfway stage of the 2013 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the German leads by 38 points, but it hasn’t all gone to plan for him. He secured victories in the Malaysian, Bahrain, Canadian and German races, but a gearbox failure at the British Grand Prix robbed him the chance of victory, and a further 25 points. Vettel is one of five drivers to take the chequered flag in 2013. Kimi Raikkonen started the year on top for Lotus, winning the Australian Grand Prix, while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso scored victories in China, and at his Grand Prix in Spain. Of the main contenders, the outfit at Mercedes have been the most improved so far in 2013. Prix. His new team-mate, Lewis Hamilton, continued his love affair with the Hungarian, taking his fourth Hungarian Grand Prix in seven years, his first win with Mercedes and first of the 2013 Season. Regular front runner McLaren-Mercedes have under-performed so far this season. Jensen Button and Sergio Perez have not stood on the podium yet, and the team sits sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, behind Lotus and Force India, who they finished comfortably ahead of in 2012. The other big talking point has been Tyre Manufacturer Pirelli. They’ve been subjected to much criticism this season, mainly for the fast wearing nature of their rubber, and also for the farcical British Grand Prix, where several drivers suffered punctures at high speeds on the left-side rear tyre. Luckily, Pirelli addressed the issue between the races in Germany and Hungary, and fingers crossed that it is resolved.Australia’s Mark Webber, in his swansong season,

sits fifth in the championship, winless so far, but strong performances in Malaysia, Monaco and Great Britain saw him finish on the podium. All eyes are on the other Aussie, Daniel Riccardo, though, because he is fighting for the seat that Webber will vacate at season’s end, and consistency will be the key for the Toro Rosso pilot. Ten down, nine to go, and whilst Sebastian Vettel is in the box seat, one retirement could bring him back into the clutches of Raikkonen, Alonso and Hamilton, who are in a three-way battle for second, but the German dominated the back end of 2012, winning four consecutive races in Singapore, Japan, Korea and India, which effectively won him the championship. There’s plenty to come, and plenty to look forward to, in a championship that has so far made for compelling viewing, and no doubt will continue to do so, until the final race of the season in Brazil, in November.
