Hikes are led by Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener and Master Naturalist Kate Lynch. Cost: Free and open to the public. No pre-registration required. Saturday, May 31 Nature Sleuthing When: 10 a.m. - Noon Where: Wesselman Woods Nature Center Visit the nature center for short family-friendly hikes and a chance to chat with Indiana Master Naturalist / Southwestern Indiana Master Gardener Debbie Goedde. Cost: Free and open to the public. No pre-registration required. Saturday, May 31 Hoosier River Watch Training When: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Where: Wesselman Woods Nature Center & Pigeon Creek Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring “Basic” Training introduces citizens and educators to water quality monitoring utilizing hands-on habitat, chemical, and biological assessment methods. The sessions are held both inside and outdoors. Any interested adult is welcome to attend, and once certified, may teach students how to monitor. Our environmental education staff will guide the children to help them make the most of their time spent outdoors and increase their self-confidence in exploring. Adventures and activities will include hikes, animal encounters, hands-on experiments and crafts, canoeing, and outdoor games. For campers ages 6 – 8. Junior Discovery Camp is a half-day version of our classic summer camp experience, designed for pre-Kindergarten children. Campers will explore the grounds of Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve with camp staff, play outside, meet animal friends, participate in hands-on experiments and crafts, and have a morning snack. For campers ages 4 and 5 who are fully potty trained. Extended care is NOT available for Junior Discovery campers. Cost: $70 ($60 for WNS members) Pre-registration required. Sunday, June 15 Flutterby Hike When: 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. Where: Howell Wetlands Flutter by the Howell Wetlands with Debbie Goedde, Southwestern Indiana Master Naturalist and butterfly enthusiast to experience a diversity of butterflies. The tour travels through different habitats, including wetlands, prairie, and woodlands to showcase various habitats, life cycle stages, and identification tricks for these winged beauties. Cost: Free and open to the public. No pre-registration required. Sunday, June 15 Wildlife in the City When: 2 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Where: Pigeon Creek Enjoy the city’s wild side on a guided paddle down the scenic Pigeon Creek. Cost: $20 /group deposit is required. Saturday, June 21 Bird Banding When: 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. Where: Wesselman Woods Nature Center Assist with an ongoing research and conservation project as we catch, identify, band, and record data on the birds of the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. This unique hands-on birding experience offers close up encounters with wild birds and demonstrations on banding techniques and bird identification. Participants can also help release them back to the wild! Bring your camera! Cost: Free and open to the public. No pre-registration required. Monday, June 23 Adventure Summer Day Camp When: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Where: Wesselman Woods Nature Center Adventure Camp expands the classic Wesselman Woods summer camp experience for older campers, adding a little more science and exploration into the mix.
