TNLA Tailgate Topic: Protect Your Feet Objective: Participants will be able to identify circumstances that can lead to problems with feet and how to avoid them. APPLICATION: Let participants know the importance of their feet. Injury to their feet can result in loss of hour and wages. Together identify situations on the job that can lead to injury and make safety suggestions. Your feet at very important for the type of work and the variety of tasks that you do. Often taken for granted, your feet help you use tools and equipment on a daily basis. Take care of your feet and they’ll take care of you.

WATCH YOUR STEP • Keep an eye out for unleveled walkways and loose gravel. By looking ahead you can avoid injuries to your feet and ankles. • Make sure all equipment is free from debris, oil, ice, and/or water when getting in and out. • Stay aware of your feet and their proximity to machine’s moving parts so that your feet are not crushed. • Never use your foot as a tool – always unjam clogs with the appropriate tools. ARE YOU WEARING THE RIGHT SHOES? • Wear shoes or boots that do not leave any of your feet exposed. Good shoes should be comfortable and support your foot completely. • Make sure your shoes are the right size. It’s better to be a little too big than a little too small. • Wear the right shoes for the right job. Rubber soles shoes should be worn when on a ladder. Other times you may need steel toed shoes. • Always wear clean socks to reduce the chance of foot fungus. TAKE CARE OF YOUR FEET • Never jump off a machine or landing. Climb down slowly and add steps to landings if needed. • Get a good grip on any heavy objects you are carrying to reduce the chance of dropping the object on you feet and toes. • Always report any injuries that occur to feet to a supervisor. • runs into it they will have space to avoid falling into the opening. OIL LEAKS: Oil leaks should be promptly repaired and the oil cleaned off of walkways/floors.

Dear Texas Nursery and Landscape Association Members, With both flu and COVID-19 circulating this season, getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever. To keep your employees and customers healthy, you can play an important role in stopping the spread of contagious seasonal flu by encouraging your staff to get their flu shot. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has created posters that you can download and print to help remind employees to get their shot. What can you do? • Display the flu vaccine printable posters in your break room so employees know the facts. They’re available in both English and Spanish. • Consider offering incentives for employees to get vaccinated this year. Ideas include hosting an on-site flu vaccination clinic with refreshments, setting policies allowing time off to get a flu shot, or holding a contest for the department with the highest percentage of vaccinated employees. • Direct employees to TexasFlu.org to find a flu shot location. Anyone needing a free or low-cost vaccine can call 2-11. • Use social media and other communication channels to promote flu vaccination. Flu vaccines have a long-standing safety record. A flu shot is the first and best way for employees to reduce their chances of getting the flu and spreading it to coworkers, customers and family members. And keeping your employees healthy helps keep your doors open for business. Every dose matters. Let’s work together for a #HealthyTexas. Texas Department of State Health Services

Legislative & Regulatory Update

December 2020 - TNLA Working for You

Meeting & Events Calendar

TNLA Builds Advocacy Toolbox Over the past several years, challenges from employers needing the H-2A and H-2B programs have intensified. To combat these growing challenges, TNLA has embarked on creating video resources to educate policymakers on the vital nature of these visa programs. Over the past several weeks, TNLA members have participated in interviews to discuss the economic importance of the H-2A and H-2B programs as well as addressing public and political misconceptions. For one of the first times, Texas green industry will be the primary focus in the visual representation of these programs. We look forward to using these video resources on future fly-ins to Washington D.C. and urging federal policymakers to support Texas employers.

Updates on TNLA Working For You Activity

As was recently reported in the Texas press, Congressman Castro this week introduced a labor union sponsored bill on the H-2B program. TNLA has been tracking the progression of this bill as a part of the H-2B Coalition and was aware of the bill text just prior to the Congressman filing the legislation. The proposed legislation has little chance of passing in the remaining days of this Congress, however the bill is meant to be a indication of his priorities from the Congress convening in January. Included in the bill are several union proposals seen in recent years including making it harder for employers to obtain the visas, making the visas portable so the workers can leave the company during the season, and a right to U.S. citizenship for returning H-2B workers. You can find a summary here.

TNLA Joins TAC to Hear From Rep.Ashby on Broadband

TNLA staff joined members of the Texas Agriculture Council in a meeting with Texas State Representative Trent Ashby. Rep. Ashby will be one of the leading authors on legislation expanding broadband internet access across Texas to the benefit of rural and urban communicates as well as precision agriculture.

Action Update List • Congress is nearing a deal on the complete funding package and a stimulus bill for the coming year. The deadline is Friday and House & Senate leaders have grown more confident in their ability to reach a deal. TNLA has asked our member to use the TNLA Legislative Action Center to ask that H-2B discretionary language is included in the bill. Visit here • The USDA has shifted their treatment of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) from a containment to a management strategy considering how widespread the pest has become. However, Texas growers should be cautioned that Texas still maintains state-level quarantines for the pest • TNLA signed onto the official letter from the H-2B Workforce Coalition to the Biden-Harris transition team. The letter congratulates their incoming staff on the work ahead of them and introduces the importance of the H-2B program to the new administration officials. You can see the letter here • TNLA will again be working on preempting city-created employer mandates this session as a part of the ASSET coalition. Our coalition is drafting legislation to accomplish this goal and several other COVID recovery priorities including workforce development. Stay tuned to the TNLA Legislative Leader List for more information on this by signing up here.
