Completed in 2020, the new Clean Scapes facility increased offices, break rooms, and meeting rooms. The open-concept layout optimizes the space and is geared towards a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Clean Scapes incorporated sustainable practices and increased efficiency with updated waste systems, fuel stations, and an innovative all-natural paving system. TNLA Staff toured each facet of the facility, learning what it takes to organize such a large operation. Zach Shewmaker with Clean Scapes organized the grounds tour and took the tour group to see a sample of their work at The Domain, a large-scale outdoor shopping experience in Austin, Texas. TNLA Staff enjoyed seeing the total operation from behind the scenes to the finished product. The work that TNLA members do is awe-inspiring. To see a little bit of the tour, see the photos on the next page.

TNLA TAILGATE TOPICS

CONVERTING FRACTIONS TO DECIMAL EQUIVALENTS Objective: Participants will be able to correctly convert inches and fractions of inches in feet using the following steps. APPLICATION: Identify circumstances when participants will need to convert inches into feet. Using the following steps practice making conversions. If needed, examples can be altered to form additional problem sets.

When measuring for landscape installation and maintenance it is crucial to be as exact as possible. An incorrect measurement can increase costs and/or add time to a project. Often, measurements are taken in feet and inches but must be recorded as feet and decimals of a foot. Example A: Inches only, no feet. A retaining wall measures 54 ½”. Convert this number into feet. Step One: Convert fraction of an inch (½) into a decimal of an inch by dividing the numerator by the denominator. This will create a decimal of an inch. 1 ÷ 2 = 0.5” Step Two: Add converted fraction to the whole inches. 54” + 0.5” = 54.5” Step Three: Convert inches into feet (or decimal of a foot) by dividing by 12 (12” = 1 foot). 54.5” ÷ 12 = 4.54 feet Example B: If there is a foot (feet) preceding the fraction. The outer edge of a perennial bed measures 25’-13⅝” Step One: Convert fraction of an inch (⅝) into a decimal of an inch by dividing the numerator by the denominator. This will create a decimal of an inch. 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625 Step Two: Add converted fraction to the whole inches. 13 + 0.625” = 13.625” Step Three: Convert inches into feet (or decimal of a foot) by dividing by 12 (12” = 1 foot) Add to original feet. 13.625” ÷ 12 = 1.14’ + 25’ = 26.14 feet

ADVOCACY REPORT TNLA is Headed to Washington D.C. on H2B and Invites Any TNLA Member to Attend TNLA will be joining NALP, FEWA, and SEA on a fly-in to Washington D.C. on June 7th8th to push for H-2B cap relief in FY 2023. Many Texas H-2B employers are familiar with the struggle to secure H-2B cap relief in recent years and, while we have been successful in getting thousands of supplemental H-2B visas, the process is too slow and undependable. We need Texas companies to join us in Washington and share the story of the green industry with our congressional delegation. There is NO registration fee for this event. Attendees must make their own flight arrangements and can book hotel rooms for $299 at the Renaissance Washington D.C. downtown. Schedule At A Glance Tuesday, June 7th 6:00 – 7:00 pm Drinks at Hotel Bar Dinner on Own Wednesday, June 8th 7:00 – 8:30 am Breakfast and Briefing at the Hotel 8:30 – 4:00 Congressional Visits on the Hill Interested in attending? TNLA Attends Texas Senate Hearing on Rural Workforce & Immigration TNLA staff were in attendance at the Texas Senate hearing on agriculture & rural workforce development. Also up for discussion was the topic of illegal and legal immigration in rural Texas. TNLA met with several key legislative staffers and elected officials committee about the importance of the developing new workforce in Texas for the green industry as well as the importance of the H2 programs to the grower and landscape sector. Emerald Ash Borer Confirmed In Parker County The Texas A&M Forest Service has issued an alert of a positive finding in Parker County for Emerald Ash Borer. A pest of major regulatory concern, EAB is already quarantined in 6 Texas counties including neighboring Denton and Tarrant Counties. Retailers, arborists, landscapers, and mulch producers should be aware of the restrictions for moving ash under the existing quarantines and compliance agreements. TNLA will share the details of the quarantine when it is published by Texas Dept. of Agriculture. Forest Service Announcement: https://tfsweb.tamu.edu/content/article.aspx ?id=32244
