TNLA Tailgate Topics: Rototillers Objective: Participants will be able to correctly and safely operate a rototiller. APPLICATION: The rototiller is a time saving device that is used to make a procedure less labor intensive. It is used to loosen soil and assist in incorporating amendments into soils. Have participants become familiar with the three types of rototillers. Since each type of rototiller is different, participants must be comfortable with operating the machines. Have participants practice using the machines. There are three types of rototillers, but the first two are most commonly used:

⭐ Rear tine tiller ⭐ Three point attachment (tractor hitch attachment) ⭐ Front tine tiller

No matter which type of tiller is being used, safety is your first priority! Different types of tiller have different methods of operation. Have participants practice using tillers. Be sure to follow these steps. Have an area marked off for practice or set aside a time for participants to practice. Be sure to evaluate based on proficiency and safety. • • • • • • • • • • • •

Familiarize yourself with the owner’s manual – that’s what it’s there for. Know the capabilities and limitations of the tiller. Locate utilities before tilling! ⭐ Only operate the machine when instructed to do so. Inspect the tiller. Check the belts, hydraulic hoses, tire pressure, look for loose or worn tines and clear the tines of any debris. Check all fluid levels, the oil, grease fittings and the air cleaner. Suit up! Put on the proper safety gear, including eye protection and earplugs.⭐ Safely start and operate the rototiller. Use hydraulics and/or gears to engage the tiller tines. Always till area to a uniform depth. Safely shut down and park the machine. Remember: all soils are not the same! Adjustments to the tines may be necessary.
