Welcome to

Our 100% home record remains in tact, with still no goals conceded at Fortress Park Hall! Another solid performance ensured maximum points against Aber with tonight's encounter with Bala Town hopefully ensuring another Welsh Premier Victory. A warm welcome to Nigel, Ruth, their fellow Directors, Colin, his staff and players and supporters of Bala Town who have made the short journey over to us this evening. As everyone prepares for the Christmas period we are hoping that our wonderful form continues this evening and into the festive period with two back to back games with Newtown on Boxing Day and New Years Day. There was lots to cheer for both teams last weekend as we secured another impressive

victory in the Welsh Premier, whilst Bala scored seven against gap Connah's Quay at Maes Tegid. Once again we had some familiar faces in the crowd against Aberystwyth with our friends from Holy Trinity Primary School, whose school choir entertained us before the game inside the Venue, as well as performing on the pitch at half time. We also presented our Academy player of the month awards. Each age group winner was invited to dine before the game with family and friends. Last Sunday we had a good turnout for our Academy Christmas Party, all age groups enjoyed the day with some Christmas games, bowling and festive football. Tonight we will be drawing our Christmas Raffle, with some great prizes on offer including a VIP ticket for four people for an Aston Villa Premiership game, a signed Chelsea shirt and a

plasma TV amongst the top prizes. If you haven't already bought your ticket, now's your chance! Whilst on the pitch, our academy teams have been performing well in the annual futsal matches at Deeside Leisure Centre. Let's hope we get another bumper crowd at Park Hall tonight and a good result to take us into the festive period. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone connected with the club a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Thanks once again for your support, it's much appreciated. Enjoy the game

manager’s notes I would like to welcome everyone to tonight’s game, in what will be our last game of 2013. We have had a bit of a disrupted week after the match against Carmarthen was postponed but the lads have trained well and we are more than ready to face Bala tonight. There will be a few familiar faces for me at Park Hall and it will be good to see Connell Murtagh at the game because he has worked with us over the past two or so years. I also know Ian Sheridan who used to play for me at Airbus and he is a really good lad. I have seen a lot of Bala in recent weeks and watched them take on Airbus. During that game they were probably the better team and it is definitely going to be a tough game tonight. They have a lot of quality in their squad with a lot of experience. Kenny Lunt and Mark Jones are both very good footballers and in my opinion, they should be higher up in the league. They had a fantastic result last Friday so they will come here with a lot of confidence. The lads will need to be really up for it tonight because they will certainly push us! Keep cheering the lads on! Enjoy the game!

The Big Interview with Craig Harrison Craig Harrison spoke to Gilbert Woolley this week about both the good points and bad points of the year that was, 2013. It has been a fantastic year and although we were a little disappointed to lose in the cups, the year as a whole has been a really great success. We had such a good time in Europe and we played so well in the first leg and we certainly didn’t disgrace ourselves in the away leg. We may have even been able to get a draw out of the game in Warsaw but overall, we played so well in the tie. Domestically, we had a little bit of a slow start in the 2013/14 Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League season, which I think may have been because of the European hangover but since September we have really kicked on and we are hoping to continue our excellent form into 2014. We also want to keep our unbeaten run at home going as long as we can. To have not

08

lost a game at home in 2013 is really pleasing and is something that I am very proud of. My favourite moments of the year were winning the league in the manner we did and the first half of the match between ourselves and Legia Warsaw in Wrexham. That was the best all round performance that I have seen us play. When you take into consideration that there was a big crowd at the game, we were playing in Wrexham and not at Park Hall and when you add that to the quality of the opposition that we faced, it really was a magnificent effort from the team. We passed the ball really well and created chances and it was without doubt the most impressive performance I have ever seen from my team. The most disappointing moments in 2013 were the two cup exits. We lost to Carmarthen on penalties in the final of the Word Cup and lost to Bangor City in the last minute of the Welsh Cup semi final.

Saints so far The New Saints made it eight home wins in a row this season after beating Aberystwyth Town four nil thanks to goals from Mike Wilde, Matty Williams, Alex Darlington and Greg Draper. Wilde opened the scoring ten minutes before half time and two quick fire goals from Williams and Darlington ensured the victory. Substitute Draper added a fourth with a close range header as TNS extended their lead at the top of the table. The Saints started well with a succession of corners and after winning a third corner in row, Wilde was superbly denied by Mike Lewis. Darlington whipped in a fantastic cross from the edge of the box but the diving Wilde was somehow thwarted by a brilliant stop from the visiting goalkeeper. TNS continued to keep the ball but on the 20 minute mark, Aberystwyth Town went close to breaking the deadlock. Stuart Fraser found space in the box and after being pressured, he curled his effort just over the bar. With 36 minutes gone, TNS opened the scoring. Wilde calmly headed in against the post to give his side a deserved lead. The former Chester City forward headed in from eight yards out, leaving Lewis rooted. Minutes before half time, Chris Jones hit a powerful shot into the side netting. The former Swansea City man controlled the ball in the box and was unlucky, after his shot narrowly missed the target. Ten minutes into the second half, Williams doubled the advantage. Darlington wonderfully dribbled past a couple of Aberystwyth Town defenders before finding Williams, who despite having his shot deflected, was able to watch his shot trickle past Lewis.

A minute later it was three. Darlington was the first player to react to a loose ball in the box and the former Wrexham man made no mistake as he smashed in an unstoppable strike, to ensure that The Saints would continue a more than impressive home record this season. Shortly after Sam Finley magnificently dribbled past a number of defenders before playing Jones in and once again Lewis thwarted The Saints. Jones took his time before curling an effort in to the top corner, only for Lewis to palm it away. Substitute Greg Draper then added a fourth after he headed in a cross from fellow substitute, Jamie Mullan. The TNS number nine easily converted from close range to add to his tally of nine goals this season. Draper then attempted to become a provider and after wonderfully picking out Darlington, the TNS number 20 was unlucky to have his shot cleared off the line. Chris Marriott and Finley had long range efforts but Draper’s goal was the last of the game as TNS ran out comfortable winners. The result means Craig Harrison’s men have now won eight home games in a row this season, without conceding a single goal. The New Saints line up was Paul Harrison (C), Simon Spender, Chris Marriott, Connell Rawlinson, Sam Finley, Kai Edwards, Matty Williams (Jamie Mullan 56), Chris Seargeant, Mike Wilde (Greg Draper 64), Chris Jones (Ryan Fraughan 71) and Alex Darlington. The unused substitutes for TNS were Phil Baker, Aeron Edwards, Ryan Kershaw and Aaron Simms. The Aberystwyth line up was Mike Lewis, Sion James, Antonio Corbisiero, Peter Hoy, Stuart Jones, Bari Morgan (Krzystof Nalborski 71), Mark Jones, Cledan Davies, Stuart Fraser (Jamie Butler 77), Wyn Thomas (Tom Shaw 64) and Rhydian Davies. The unused substitute for the visitors was Ed Powl-Jones.

Having guided his side to another win, Craig Harrison’s team have won every home game this season and are still yet to concede a single goal. The TNS boss is happy with how his team are playing and said, ‘We are very strong at home and the reason we are doing so well is down to our hard work. We work very hard every day in training and the players are responding to everything I want. We are as fit as we have ever been, we are a tight group with players that want to work hard for each other and we have a really good squad that is full of ability.’ Harrison was delighted that his team kept another clean sheet but would rather win games, than try and protect the wonderful record, ‘It is great that we are keeping clean sheets but the result is more important. We are

22

always looking ahead to our next game and we know that we must remain focused. We would never try and protect our clean sheet record instead of trying to win a game as winning is what it is all about. I don’t mind winning by two goals to one or three goals to two but I will never go into any game trying to draw nil nil, just so that we can preserve our defensive record. ‘ TNS will now face two important league games prior to Christmas. Firstly The Saints will travel down to Carmarthen, hoping for a repeat performance from earlier in the season, when a rampant Saints side demolished The Old Gold by six goals to nil. The Oswestry based side will then play their final game before Christmas, entertaining Bala Town on Friday the 20th of December.

Saints visited by Holy Trinity Choir The Holy Trinity Church of England School Choir visited The New Saints on Friday night. The Oswestry based school sang a number of Christmas carols before the match inside The Venue before going pitch side to witness The Saints beat Aberystwyth Town by four goals to nil. The School children also had the chance to get on the pitch at half time and sing another four Christmas carols in front of a horde of applauding fans. Everyone associated with The New Saints Football Club would like to say a big thank you to the Holy Trinity C of E School for visiting Park Hall stadium on Friday night.

Show Racism The Red Card!

The Show Racism the Red Card team were at Park Hall stadium again yesterday. Pupils from the Cefn Mawr County Primary School took part in an educational workshop delivered by education worker Chris Stokes, learning about the topic of racism through interactive games and discussions. During the workshop the young people took the chance to make additional notes adding to the research they had done prior to the event to aid in the production of their newspaper articles which they will be writing after the event, when they return to school. The afternoon session was supported by manager Craig Harrison who was joined by campaign worker Jason Webber for the role play press conference. The young people posed questions on racism in football and society to the panel who faced some tough intelligent questions.

28

The best asked questions on the day won a signed TNS FC shirt and shorts, a club scarf and SRtRC goodie bag. Every pupil also received a match ticket for the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League ďŹ xture against Aberystwyth Town FC. Everyone associated with The New Saints would like to thank the school for attending the event.

academy news The academy boys and girls enjoyed their Christmas party last Sunday at The Venue along with some of the parents. The day was spread into 3 slots where the younger boys and girls had games and a quiz and the older ones playing bowling and finishing off with a disco, with some of our under 15s getting to know some of the under 16 girls quite well on the dance floor! Another fine show of dancing came from Russell Higgins who helps out with our under 15s, it looked like he was dancing to a different song but he did get up and give it a go! It's good for team bonding to get the groups in together and mix with other age groups, because during the season they are training and playing within their own teams. It also brings the parents together and it's good to celebrate Christmas as a team. On Sunday we also had a game between the 16s and the first year scholars. Rivalry is fierce and it also gives us an insight into next year`s intake. Our 16s competed very well and there were some great goals on show, the 16s coming out on top 6-2. We have a short break now for Christmas and then back to training Week commencing 6th January where we finish the futsal programme and start playing games again in the academy cup and friendlies. I'd like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas on behalf of all of us here at the club. Enjoy the game,

Scott
