2021 Tampa Organization of Black Affairs
As we come together to recognize and celebrate the numerous contributions of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) is pleased that you have joined us for this momentous occasion. We come together to celebrate and appreciate Dr. King’s vision to promote justice, equity, diversity and “truth” for our global society. This year we are proud to celebrate our 41st Anniversary of TOBA’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast. The theme for this year is Reawakening His Dream. We have worked hard to create a memorable program. We hope you will enjoy the special highlights and the message from our keynote speaker. TOBA will continue its mission to represent the special interests of African Americans toward shared prosperity. Our mission also includes fulfilling the dream of Dr. King to achieve true diversity, justice, equity, equality, fairness and economic inclusion for African Americans among others, for the betterment of the entire Tampa Bay community. We thank you for joining us on this momentous occasion. Sincerely, TOBA Board Members and Breakfast Co-Chairs “One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great periods of social change… Today, our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and to face the challenge of change.” Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Only in the darkness can you see the stars.” ~ The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 18, 2021 Dear Honored Guests and TOBA Members, On behalf of the constituents of District 19, let me welcome you to the 41st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast. I am honored to be asked by the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs (TOBA) to recognize this momentous occasion and to reflect upon the theme of “Reawakening his Dream” It is also my honor to welcome to the Tampa Bay Area Reverend Dr. Otis Moss III. TOBA’s legacy is born out of the strong philosophical foundation established by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The founders of TOBA recognized that in the darkest of hours issues like economic empowerment, political and social equality are the stars that we see before us…beautiful, bright, and universal. Forty-one years have passed and this breakfast, today, reminds us that silence and complacency will set the course of history that will negatively impact generations. TOBA recognizes its duty and obligation to cultivate leaders for the future. Today, TOBA actively marries meaningful dialogue with action, so that in our darkness we can use the stars to chart our direction. In order for Dr. King’s dream to continue on, we must embrace the belief that his “dreams” have become a part of our reality, our reawakening. This is a reality that is based on truth, honesty, forgiveness, and accountability and if expectations are held high our community, as a whole, will stand strong in times of darkness, challenges, and controversy. To the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs: Congratulations on your 41st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast. Rosa Parks once said, “Memories of our lives, our works and our deeds will continue in others.” The enduring legacy of this tradition is a testament to the visionary leadership of TOBA’s founders. Since its inception, TOBA has stood as a vanguard to ensure that Tampa’s Black community can thrive in spite of the historical inequities it faces. In the wake of the global pandemics of COVID-19 and systemic racism, we need TOBA’s leadership now more than ever. The world has faced unprecedented times during the past year. The work of Dr. King has become even more remarkable to me as I continue to look to his example for guidance and strength. Serving in office during a global pandemic has allowed me to witness first-hand the challenges our community has faced as many struggled with their unemployment benefits and putting food on the table. My office continues to work tirelessly to ensure our constituents receive the help they deserve during these uncertain times. I’d like to thank my staff and the staff so many legislators who have been working hard to meet the needs of so many hardworking Floridians who have fallen on hard times. I’d also like to thank organizations like TOBA who have not relented in doing the important work needed to empower and uplift the Black community. And last but certainly not least, I would like to thank our frontline and essential workers who have been putting their lives on the line everyday to help keep our community going. I look forward to hearing from today’s distinguished keynote speaker and know that we will all come away feeling refreshed and inspired as we roll up our sleeves to continue our respective work in 2021. If there ever is any assistance that my office can provide, please do not hesitate to contact us. Again, congratulations and best wishes for a wonderful event.

“Reawakening His Dream”
My name is Henry “Shake” Washington and I am a newly elected Hillsborough County School Board Member for District 5. On behalf of Hillsborough County Public Schools and the School Board, I am honored to support the Tampa Organization of Black Affairs’ Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Breakfast and the amazing work done by TOBA. Dr. King emphasized the importance of education. His philosophy was to teach students to “think intensively and to think critically”. This philosophy is embraced by our district and passed along to each one of the students who walk our halls. The School Board and I recognize TOBA for its awareness of the need to develop Tampa’s next generation of leaders. We must work together as a community to prepare our young people to lead the generation that follows them to the heights of success. I call on all members of the Tampa Bay community to join the Hillsborough County School district and TOBA as we strive to educate the leadership with Dr. King’s message of justice, equity, diversity and truth. Respectfully, Henry “Shake” Washington School Board Member, District 5

“Reawakening His Dream”
TOBA History More than 42 years ago, Delano Stewart, Bob Morrison and David McQuay met to share their concerns and ideas about Blacks in Tampa. They wanted to develop a plan to ensure that the Black community played a more vital role in Tampa’s economic, political and social development. They felt that a viable group was needed to address areas of interest not being attended to by existing organizations. A commitment was made for this new entity not to
TOBA’s Co-Founders Delano Stewart Bob Morrison
compete with other organizations or agencies. After reviewing basic ideas, the structure and goals of the organization, it was decided that the first meeting announcing the purpose concept of TOBA would
be held at the residence of Attorney Stewart. Following the initial gathering, TOBA’s first meeting was held at the College Hill Recreational Center. The individuals elected to serve on the first Board of Directors were: Ken Anthony, Corene Collins, Carolyn House, Gussie Louise Livingston, Bob Morrison, Carrie McQuay and David McQuay. Since then, several major activities have contributed to TOBA successfully meeting its goals. One major event is the Annual TOBA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Breakfast which brings together a cross-section of leaders from the Tampa Bay community to be inspired and motivated by a national speaker. The first annual TOBA breakfast was held in 1980. The theme was, “Towards Political and Economic Power and Influence in the Eighties”. TOBA also promotes and sponsors economic development and Black Business Expositions in coordination with other minority business enterprises and in conjunction with buyers of professional services and goods from the government and private sector. This initiative provides black business owners (among other MBE’s) with networking and marketing opportunities that have resulted in actual spending with this special interest group of companies. Other TOBA activities have included its youth oratorical contests; candidate forums; political and economic development seminars; co-funding the Hillsborough Black Heritage Committee Celebrations; corporate receptions; voter registration drives and more. As a result if these and other initiatives, TOBA has developed, strengthened and enjoyed long term quality relationships with many other organizations with common interest that resulted in having a direct and positive impact on the special interest of Tampa’s Black community toward the betterment of the entire community. 2021 Tampa Organization of Black Affairs

Jeremy Blount
TreBora Morales is a lifetime resident of Tampa. She was raised primarily in East Tampa, and graduated from Brandon High School. At the age of 18, she joined the Army National Guard and left for training immediately following graduation from high school. While serving in the Army, she handled logistics and was appointed to the rank of Sergeant during her eleven years of service. She was nominated three times as Soldier of the Year to represent her unit and was awarded multiple honors during her service. She later attended Hillsborough Community College, then transferred to the University of South Florida. She has since obtained two bachelor’s degrees, one in Long Term Care Administration, and the other in Biological Health Science and Health Management. She recently earned her graduate certificate in Global Sustainability from the University of South Florida and is working on furthering her education in Sustainable Business.
Jeremy Blount is a Tampa native and resident of the “Nuccio” community. He grew up playing high school football and dedicated himself to the game. With hard work and dedication, he eventually earned a full scholarship to the University of South Dakota. Jeremy was a two-sport athlete playing football and running track for four years. This earned him All-American honors in both sports and he also maintained good grades to earn his bachelor’s degree and ultimately playing professional football in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Jeremy has a passion and dedication to better himself and make a difference in his community. In 2018, Jeremy advocated for youth by speaking to over 25 youth groups mainly in the Tampa Bay Area, surrounding cities and some states during his book signing, “Football to the Feds.” With a desire to dedicate more of his time, he started a monthly community cleanup to empower and encourage the residents in his Nuccio neighborhood. To gain support in his efforts, he sought and partnered with Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful and its program entitled: “Adopt A Road.” He and his neighborhood friends cleaned the road on 47th and Sligh Avenue in Tampa. Through his hard work, Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful erected and adopted a road sign naming it “Jeremy Blount” in 2019.

Outside of work and community service, TreBora spends time with her supportive husband and two children.
“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. “Reawakening His Dream”
Keynote Speaker
Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III With civil rights advocacy in his DNA, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III built his ministry on community advancement and social justice activism. As Senior Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Moss spent the last two decades practicing and preaching a Black theology that unapologetically calls attention to the problems of mass incarceration, environmental justice and economic inequality. Dr. Moss is part of a new generation of ministers committed to preaching a prophetic message of love and justice, which he believes are inseparable companions that form the foundation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As part of his community engagement through Trinity United Church of Christ, Dr. Moss led the team that came up with the “My Life Matters” curriculum; which includes the viral video “Get Home Safely: 10 Rules of Survival,” created in the aftermath of Michael Brown’s death at the hands of Ferguson, Mo., police. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Moss is an honors graduate of Morehouse College who earned a Master of Divinity form Yale Divinity School, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. He returned to Yale in 2014 to present the famed Lyman Beecher lectures. The threeday event included an in-depth discourse on the subject of “The Blue Note Gospel: Preaching the Prophetic Blues in a Post Soul World.” The lectures, which demonstrated a homiletic blueprint for prophetic preaching in the 21st century, were the foundation of his latest book, Blue Note Preaching in a Post-Soul World: Finding Hope in an Age of Despair, published in 2015. Dr. Moss was named to the inaugural Root 100, a list that “recognizes emerging and established African-American leaders who are making extraordinary contributions,” according to the publication’s Website. Honorees range between ages 25 to 45, and their accomplishments and successes transcend media headlines or statistics. With a unique gift to communicate across generations, Dr. Moss’ creative bible-based messages have inspired young and old alike. His intergenerational preaching gift has made Dr. Moss a popular speaker on college campuses, at conferences, and churches across the globe. He is highly influenced by the works of Zora Neale Hurston, August Wilson, Howard Thurman, Jazz, and Hip-Hop music. The work and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the pastoral ministry of his father, Dr. Otis Moss, Jr. of Cleveland, Ohio, have been primary mentors for his spiritual formation. He is the former pastor of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., his first pastorate, where the church grew from 125 members to over 2100 disciples during his tenure. His earlier publications include: Redemption in a Red Light District, and The Gospel According to the Wiz: And Other Sermons from Cinema. He co-authored The Gospel Re-Mix; How to Reach the Hip-Hop Generation with three other contributors, and Preach! The Power and Purpose Behind Our Praise, with his father. His sermons, articles, and poetry have appeared in publications such as Sojourners Magazine and The African American Pulpit Journal. Those works include: Power in the Pulpit II: America’s Most Effective Preachers, Joy To The World: Sermons From America’s Pulpit, Sound The Trumpet: Messages of Hope for Black Men, and The Audacity of Faith: Christian Leaders Reflect on the Election of Barack Obama. His work has also been featured on HuffingtonPost, Urban Cusp, and The Root. Dr. Moss is an ordained minister in the Progressive National Baptist Convention and the United Church of Christ. He is on the boards of Auburn Seminary and Faith-In-Place/Action Fund , and chaplain of the Children’s Defense Fund’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor Child Advocacy Conference. Additionally, Dr. Moss is a Senior Fellow in the Auburn Seniors Fellow Program. He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Monica Brown of Orlando, Fla., a Spelman College and Columbia University graduate. They are the proud parents of two children, Elijah Wynton and Makayla Elon. 2021 Tampa Organization of Black Affairs

“Reawakening His Dream”
Lift Every Voice & Sing
Lift every voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand. True to our God, True to our native land. 2021 Tampa Organization of Black Affairs

“ All life is interrelated. We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. We are made to live together because of the interrelated structure of reality.” 24 December 1967, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta

THE POWER TO GIVE.
