Rotterdam to welcome international container supply chain community

WELCOME TO TOC CONTAINER SUPPLY CHAIN 2013

Port of Rotterdam will be welcoming international port authorities, terminal operators, shipping lines, shippers and 3PL’s who will meet in Rotterdam for the key annual industry event – TOC Container Supply Chain: Europe. It’s been 13 years since TOC was last held in Rotterdam. Since then, the port has undergone huge changes – and investment – to adapt and prepare for the new challenges ahead. TOC Container Supply Chain: Europe has selected “Innovation, Efficiency & Connectivity” as the theme for the 2013 conference, which matches the focus of the Port of Rotterdam. The Maasvlakte II port project is designed to respond to the demands both for efficient handling of mega-container vessels on the water side and more sustainable intermodal container flows on the landside. Combining the latest approaches in port planning, development and construction with high-level automated container handling technology and logistics, Maasvlakte II is an example of the next generation infrastructure that the industry now needs to provide to support global container trade and supply chain operations, while respecting societal and environmental needs. Delegates at the TOC CSC Conference will have a chance to visit the existing Maasvlakte facilities – which are also witnessing substantial technological investment – and also see Maasvlakte II taking shape. Port of Rotterdam will be joining the conference sessions and round table debates, which have a strong focus on the issue of integrating port and inland container logistics. This is a high priority area for Rotterdam and one that requires a great co-operation between all of the port and supply chain stakeholders.

Container rate volatility remains a key challenge for shippers Taking part for the first time in the TOC Container Supply Chain Europe Conference is Stanley Black & Decker, the international S&P 500 supplier of industrial and DIY tools, household hardware and security products. TOC spoke with Filip Degroote, Transportation Director EMEA for Stanley Black & Decker, about container transport chain risk, collaboration and priorities.

Q: Tell us about your container transport volumes and flows within the EMEA region A: We currently import approximately 15,000TEU into Europe each year. This includes around 8,000TEU from Asia Pacific, where we have manufacturing plants in Taiwan, China, Thailand and India, as well as sourcing from external suppliers in Taiwan, China and India. We also bring in around 6,000TEU from our production facility in Israel and a further 1,000TEU from the US.

Q: What are your key goals and priorities over the coming few years? A: As a transportation team, we need to drive productivity on total cost

from door to door and reduce total transit time. We are also tasked to support the business in executing changes in supply chain models, DC footprint and sourcing strategy, as well as working on the integration of new acquisitions.

Q: In current market conditions what do you see as the main challenges to successfully executing an effective container logistics chain? A: The main challenge today is the volatility in container pricing. What we see is that container rates are overly sensitive to demand/supply changes and not to underlying costs. Q: Are carrier services currently meeting your expectations? A: Port-to-port services are reliable, but last mile logistics,

data accuracy,

completeness and visibility all need improvement.

Q: What more can be done to ‘green’ the container supply chain? A: Better availability and pricing for 45ft and larger equipment would reduce drayage emissions. Ocean transport for the water portion is already the greenest mode available.

Q: Is supply chain risk management a strategic concern within your organisation? A: Yes. Globalisation and the interconnectness of product and material supply make risk management a strategic concern and an area for regular update and review.

Q: What do you see as the main risks in today’s global container supply chain? A: Labour actions - such as port strikes - and natural disasters. Q: Is supply chain collaboration genuinely happening? What do you see as the major factors driving collaboration – and the major impediments? A: Collaboration is happening, but businesses are still organised by functional speciality – such as sourcing, distribution, transportation, etc. Customer relationships are still mainly owned by sales, with not enough direct operational interaction.

America Chung Nam sees scope for greater container supply chain collaboration There is definite scope for improving supply chain collaboration, according to Josselin Basile, Logistics Manager for America Chung Nam Europe. America Chung Nam is one of the world’s largest providers of recovered paper, shipping thousands of containerloads from Europe to Asia every month. Mr Basile points to the lack of visibility and information concerning the potential for container positioning. As a large exporter out of Europe, he is convinced there are great possibilities to improve the matching of equipment supply and demand between different companies operating in different trades. “Everyone is working in parallel, but there is so much more we could do to combine our resources and knowledge for the benefit of the supply chain,” he comments. Other improvements he believes could be made include bringing some uniformity among carriers to ‘e-business’, the electronic handling of bills of lading and other trade documentation. Currently, says Mr Basile, each carrier has its own solution. “But however well these might work individually, obviously as a large shipper we don’t want to work with several different systems. We would prefer a common system that operates across several carriers.” He would also like to see carriers being more proactive in providing information on subjects like schedule reliability, new service introductions or indeed service changes. And on a more global level, there are still great challenges in terms of hinterland connectivity. “We get the impression that the carriers are still primarily offering a port-to-port service, but we would be also interested to know what creative solutions they could propose on the hinterland part of the transportation as well.”

APMT’s advice for TO’s to meet market growth Platinum Sponsor

Reception Sponsor

Terminal operators must increase operational reliability and efficiency to meet global market growth and help the shipping industry’s bottom line.

TOC spoke to reception sponsor Continental about its development plans in the port and terminal market and what attendees can expect at TOC CSC: Europe.

Although global container volumes are not projected to grow as rapidly over the next five years as in the past decade, high-growth emerging markets such as Africa, Latin America and South and Southeast Asia will demand infrastructure investment, higher levels of terminal productivity and a more integrated approach to coastal and inland container operations. At the same time, increased terminal reliability and efficiency are needed worldwide to help shipping lines achieve a better bottom line in a tough operating environment. So says global terminal operator APM Terminals, which takes part in this year’s TOC Container Supply Chain Europe as platinum sponsor, keynote speaker, exhibitor and terminal site visit host. The emerging market challenge As emerging markets expand at at a rapid rate, and with carriers accelerating vessel cascading to these markets, infrastructure capacity and congestion pose growing issues both for shippers and carriers. Having designated high-growth emerging markets as a priority area, this year APM Terminals will open Brasil Terminal Portuário in Santos, Brazil, with other greenfield and modernisation projects underway in Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru. But terminal infrastructure is only part of the story. “Current portside infrastructure shortcomings can be compensated for through the increased use of inland container depots (ICDs), plus enhanced port productivity and efficiency,” asserts Michael Kaasner Kristiansen, Managing Director of APM Terminals’ Inland Services for Latin America, which today covers 45 locations in 12 countries. Investment and innovation for Europe While the market dynamics are different, the mature economies, including Europe, also need investment and innovation to boost terminal efficiency for ocean carrier customers and also to improve hinterland container flows. APM Terminals recently installed the first two of 26 automated stacking cranes for its new Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam, one of a select new breed of highly automated facilities designed to handle the coming wave of 18,000TEU mega vessels. Aside from investing in infrastructure and technology to maximise mega-ship turnaround - including world-first remote-controlled quayside container cranes and lift AGVs for horizontal transport - MV II will also facilitate intermodal traffic with an on-dock rail terminal connecting to the dedicated Betuwe railfreight line and direct barge access to the European river transport network. In Belgium, the company has also just initiated a new extended gateway concept to improve efficiency for shipping lines and cargo owners by providing a direct connection from APM Terminal’s deep-water facilities at the Port of Zeebrugge to Antwerp’s inland river port facilities. Under the programme, mother vessel calls in Zeebrugge will be synchronised with dedicated barge and train services to the ATO trimodal terminal on Antwerp’s right bank. APM Terminals says that the new concept will allow ocean carriers to reduce mother vessel calls - saving fuel, emissions and time - while still giving cargo owners the flexibility to choose between hinterland access from different ports. Today’s terminal operators have an increasingly multifaceted role to play in facilitating container supply chain efficiency both inside and outside the facility ‘four walls’.

PEMA to hold state of the industry debates and master classes

Lean, mean and green – rising to the challenge of fully electric terminals

How to achieve world-class terminal productivity through ‘fine tuning’

On 25 June, PEMA will hold a live debate on future challenges and opportunities for manned and unmanned terminals – giving attendees a chance to hear from and quiz leading equipment suppliers.

Can container terminals really shake off diesel technology and convert to an all-electric, zero-emissions environment?

In a drive to improve yard equipment performance and utilisation, terminal operator SPRC embarked on a project to fine tune the advanced modules of its Navis SPARCS TOS at its two sites in Cartagena, Colombia.

Two classroom style technology masterclasses will take place during the afternoon of the same day. In-depth working groups will hold discussions around the topics of Process Automation and Safety. In addition, PEMA’s Student Case Study Challenge is a brand new initiative taking place on 26 June. Three university teams will present case study solutions to a challenge on Inter-Terminal Transportation (“ITT”), with the winning team receiving a cash prize.

Yes, according to terminal technology pioneer Dr.-Ing. Mathias Dobner, Executive VP at Terex Port Solutions - the development trend is clear and already set by the automotive industry: a transition towards electric drives and mechatronics, supported by smart control systems and reliable sensor technologies, to deliver cost savings, reduced carbon footprints and better operational control. Hear Dr. Dobner discuss the latest concept in electric drive technology and terminal handling concepts in TECH TOC Session 3 on 26 June.

The aim was to boost productivity levels beyond common international standards, with a focus on reducing waiting time for terminal tractors at the quay and yard and optimising the number of trucks per RTG. In TECH TOC Session 4 on 26 June, SPRC Operations Director Gustavo Flores will explain how by using KPI analysis, the operator was able to successfully adjust its TOS parameters to achieve dramatic productivity gains together with reduced operational costs.

ITS launches E-SMART proactive safety analytics

New launch

International Terminal Solutions Ltd (ITS) has recently launched a new straddle carrier operational safety module. The system is a further expansion of the ITS E-SMART management tool, providing an instant visualisation of the plant and equipment operated across the port.

The new module allows management to identify areas of the yard where the layout or inadequate yard maintenance may cause straddle carrier instability, and is able to quantify this in easily understood screens. It will also identify individual carriers with poor stability performance, and provides KPI data about individual operator’s safe operational performance, highlighting those demonstrating the highest risk before the operator is involved in an accident.
