Abundant April

A

pril is a month that is abundant with promise: Showers that ensure flowers and the resulting gardening chores that then bring months of pleasure; jokes and fun for the fool inside each of us; weather that almost never disappoints, even with the occasional rainy day; spring break; breaking out the spring wardrobe; Earth Day; and, this year, the Easter and Passover observances. I can look forward to something spectacular almost every day and behold the abundance of a month that promises to please. This month’s issue celebrates Earth Day with a feature on “green” home building trends, which range from affordable green to lifecycle analysis of materials used in construction. The TCW Green Corner is a new and regular department we initiated in January, and this month’s installment provides tips on cleaning materials that are more earth friendly. Fashion is a significant topic in this April issue and, being the savvy chicks we are, we provide you with fashion inspiration sure to satisfy your need to color your wardrobe appropriately. We also tip our hats to The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase, a definite rite of spring. As with every issue, we share the stories of fascinating women who enrich and enliven the Charlotte community. In keeping with our fashion focus, we profile a one-woman fashion voice — Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s vice president of trend merchan-

dising and fashion direction. It is our honor to feature Carol Hevey, who was recently named Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year. Hevey is an executive vice president for Time Warner Cable’s East Region and is well known in the Charlotte community and beyond for the impact she has made at TWC and for her passion for community service. She is a woman to know — competent, devoted, and highly approachable. Another award-winner, Dr. Ophelia GarmonBrown, has been named the 2011 Charlotte Woman of the Year. Dr Garmon-Brown’s accomplishments include becoming a newly ordained minister, serving as the vice president of community partnerships with Novant Medical Group, and leading the efforts of the Charlotte Community Health Clinic as its director. Above all, she is a woman who loves her family, loves to serve, and loves God. If you ever have the opportunity to hear her speak or just have a conversation with her, I assure you that you walk away wanting more. Abundant, indeed, is this month of April. I hope you, too, find this a month of promise, and that you have plenty of joy, love, forward-thinking satisfaction, and positive change. Expectantly waiting,

Flying High Women Who Forged A Path Across The Skies

O

ne hundred years ago, the first American woman earned a pilot certificate — at a time when it was very difficult for women to get off the ground, so to speak. There was, among other stifling efforts, a movement to prove that women weren’t sufficiently mentally stable to fly during menstruation. Despite these attempts to hold them down, women made their mark across the world’s airspace. Check out these important dates in aviation history. And, hey, share them with your daughters.

Up Up & Away 1911: Harriet Quimby becomes the first American woman to obtain a pilot certificate. Less than one year later, she became the first woman to fly across the English Channel. 1918: Marjorie Stinson is appointed the first female airmail pilot by the U.S. Postmaster General. 1921: Bessie Coleman becomes the first African American woman to be granted a pilot certificate. 1934: Helen Richey is hired by Central Airlines, becoming the first female pilot for a U.S. commercial airline. 1935: Amelia Earhart becomes the first person to fly solo across the Pacific, going from Hawaii to California; then the first to fly from Los Angeles to Mexico City. 1936: For the first time, women are allowed to compete against men at the prestigious Bendix Trophy Race. With seven airplanes racing (four piloted by men), Louise Thaden becomes the first woman to win the coveted trophy. Another woman, Laura Ingalls,

12

wins second place. 1991: Patty Wagstaff becomes the first female U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. She will go on to win twice more, making her one of only a few people (male or female) to win the title three times. 2009: President Obama signs a bill recognizing the World War II Women Air Service Pilots and awarding them Congressional Gold Medals.

These women are just a few of those who had to overcome hurdles to be “the first.” Today, it’s much easier for a woman to learn to fly. Organizations such as Women in Aviation International (wai.org) and the Ninety-Nines (ninety-nines.org) offer support and guidance. Let’s Go Flying (letsgoflying. com) provides resources, advice, and a list of flight schools, many of which even offer discounted introductory flights. fter years of helping writers self-publish their work, entrepreneur and public speaker Fabi Preslar, president of SPARK Publications, has produced her own book. On Heaven’s Couch details the journey Preslar took with her mentor, Yvonne, and the emotional and spiritual strength she attributes to her lessons learned. Inspired by Yvonne’s guidance, Preslar has made mentorship a foremost commitment in her life. She regularly assists women who have recently moved to Charlotte by connecting them with professionals and resources, and is in the development process of launching her own mentoring program for aspiring and new entrepreneurs. She is a current ambassador for the National Association of Women Business Owners Charlotte chapter, which includes serving as a mentor to new members as well as leading a Mastermind Group of new women

business owners. Preslar serves as a mentor for recent graphic design graduates from Central Piedmont Community College, students at Johnson C. Smith University, and entrepreneurs through the Women’s InterCultural Exchange. On Heaven’s Couch is available for $18 at SPARKpublications.com.

According to the 2011 Workspace Organization Survey by OfficeMax, working Americans say disorganization is harming their state of mind, happiness, and even their relationships. The majority of Americans admit their organizational skills are lacking, and to make matters worse, their messy work spaces are shaping the way their coworkers and supervisors perceive them. Uh oh. Here are just a few of the findings: A cluttered space isn’t only frustrating to look at; it’s apparently affecting our mood. Ninety percent of Americans admit that disorganization at home or work has a negative impact on their lives. Their productivity (77 percent), state of mind (65 percent), motivation (53 percent), and happiness (40 percent) are negatively affected when they are not organized. >

As seen on The Today Show, The Doctor’s, CBS Morning Show, and Dr. Oz, Sculptra Aesthetic is the only FDA-approved injectable that lasts over two years. Sculptra Aesthetic has been referred to as the “liquid face lift” because it stimulates your own collagen to build naturally over time, and addresses the underlying causes of ageing related to volume loss and skin elasticity. Patients experience a progressive and natural facial rejuvenation that will keep people guessing about a more youthful appearance. Most patients will require 2-3 sessions spread 4-6 weeks apart for optimal outcomes. Drs. Charles Brown and John Thompson of The Dermatologic Laser Center are both pleased to offer this advance in Anti-Ageing. Visit www.sculptraaesthetic.com for more information.

A Bird’s Eye View

Raptor Center Puts Eagles Front & Center Carolina Raptor Center, which houses one of the largest eagle aviaries in the country — currently home to seven American bald eagles — has added a newly designed interactive feature: an eagle blind. The Marcy Maciejewski Eagle Research Observatory will be used to study the behaviors of bald eagles, our national bird, in their natural setting. This will be one of the few eagle observatories in the country and the only one of its kind in North Carolina. An “eagle cam” is situated in the observatory, so that viewers can take a bird’s eye view of happenings in the area. Researchers, scientists, students, and other enthusiasts will be able to discreetly observe the eagles to gain knowledge about their lives during their nesting, hatching, and breeding periods. It will provide them with the closest encounter the average person can have with a bald eagle. Visit http://www.wcnc.com/marketplace/micrositecontent/wcnc-eagle-cam.html.

his time of year, many of us open the windows and get into the spring-cleaning mood. Ironically, if we aren’t careful, we may actually pollute the indoor spaces where we spend most of our time. In fact, studies have shown levels of air pollution inside our homes and offices can be two to five times higher than outside due to the chemicals we use to clean, paint, or freshen the air with. Popular cleaning products may contain harmful gases like ammonia, sulfuric acid, and formaldehyde that can irritate your eyes, nose, and throat and exacerbate asthma and allergies. Even worse, some chemicals found in today’s cleaners are known carcinogens. The Environmental Protection Agency reports there are tens of thousands of registered chemicals in the U.S., but only a fraction have been tested for toxicity to people and the environment. Even though some chemicals may pose a health risk, it’s legal for companies to include these agents in their products and it’s not a requirement to label the harmful contents on packaging. The good news is, several companies have recently adopted the “green” label and are including more non-toxic ingredients in their products. Still, it’s tough to know exactly what’s in that spray bottle and if that blue solution is harmful or not. The safest choice is to make your own cleaners using items found around the house. Here’s a non-toxic recipe to help you get started:

say, ‘ No, because they have an iPhone that can sing, dance, and take notes.’ ” But when it comes to fashion, Goldstein needs no advice. Belk has a distinctive style: modern, Southern, and feminine, with few hard edges. “We are very aware of the trends,” she says, “and I like to take things from runway to real way.” Additionally, the fashion exec stresses that, in today’s economy, consumers are strategic about how they shop. “I say, ‘Shop in your closet first, and let’s go from there.’ Then we can see what is going to be trend-right and feel good,” she recommends.

According to Arlene Goldstein, spring offers three color palettes. The first brings soft mid-tones and sweet pales into play, as spearmints and lilacs mimic the first spring blooms. The second color palette warms up with the weather and includes vivid royal blue, turquoise, orange, and fuchsia. The third palette for Spring ’11 boasts safariinspired neutrals in nudes, taupe, and olive.

In her own closet, blacks and grays reign, and the classic basics — pencil skirt, black sweater — work well as building blocks for adding more trendy items. Goldstein advises women that they should be comfortable but stay polished and put together. For her part, she never wants to pass a mirror in, say, Paris and wonder who that is looking back at her. In order to avoid that scenario, she favors black leggings, a sweater dress or a tunic, and a great pair of boots. When she’s abroad, she wears a variation of this ensemble every day. “I like easy, fashion-right pieces I can throw together and make look right,” she says. So what will “look right” in the future? Goldstein forecasts that the wide-legged pant is coming. Hemlines are dropping, as the longer skirt makes a comeback. She muses how one can wear the long skirt again and make it look fresh. She answers almost before she’s finished forming the question: a strong shoe,

like a wedge. And in the fall, pair it with a little belted jacket. In spring, a T-shirt, not too close to the body, but not too big either. And add a great belt. Color is on the horizon, she says. It’ll start with touches ... a yellow shoe, perhaps, or a cobalt blue handbag. Within a year, the colors will be much more bold. “It’s an evolutionary process,” she explains. “What is hinted at one season will become very important the next. You don’t wake up one day and find that everyone is wearing purple. “I’m a forecaster,” she adds. “I’ll see something and say, ‘I know that looks fabulous and new and exciting,’ but I’ll ask myself What am I reacting to? It helps me dissect a trend and figure out what the components are, and how you can create a look that is understandable for the consumer.” The bold colors of spring are mirrored by the rosy outlook held by Goldstein. The future is bright indeed for this fashion voice, but she stresses that she is “of the moment, in the moment. I’ve been very blessed in that I had a feel for what was the right thing to do, at the right time for me.” TCW

C

harlotte physician Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown has been named the 2011 Charlotte Woman of the Year, an award given annually to a woman who has elevated the community through outstanding service. With her long list of accomplishments, it’s not hard to believe that Dr. Garmon-

Brown, married with two grown children and a 3-year-old grandson, was chosen for that distinction. But with all she packs into each day, it might be harder to believe that she operates on the same 24hour schedule as everyone else, all the while getting the recommended amount of sleep each night.

“I try to get seven to eight hours of sleep each night,” Dr. Garmon-Brown says, smiling. “I push myself, but then I’ll look at the clock and think, Ophelia, you’ve got to stop now. Our souls are restored and our bodies regenerated during sleep. It’s so very important.” And it’s a good thing she takes care of herself, because there’s a lot of folks depending on her. The 56-year-old Detroit native is vice president of community partnerships with Novant Medical Group, the parent company of Presbyterian Hospital. She’s also the leader of the Presbyterian Hospital chaplaincy department, the chair of Presbyterian’s ethics committee, and the medical director of the Charlotte Community Health Clinic. She’s the immediate past president of the Mecklenburg Medical Society and, in her spare time, volunteers at the Charlotte Pregnancy Care Center. She has participated in mission trips for many years, both foreign and domestic, and has

established mini health clinics in Kenya and Uganda, countries she’s traveled to eight out of the last 10 years. In 2008, she completed her Master of Divinity degree at Union Presbyterian Seminary (going to school most Fridays and Saturdays for four years), and was recently ordained at Myers Park Baptist Church. Though she’s ministered to countless patients, family, and friends over the years, her ordination will allow her to marry, baptize, and serve the Lord’s Supper as well. “Sometimes I think Ophelia, what are you doing? And what are you doing well? I don’t want to spread myself so thin that people don’t have value in my presence,” says Dr. GarmonBrown. But that doesn’t really seem a problem for her, as she’s mastered a skill that very few are able to grasp — the art of living in the present. “Wherever I am, I’m present. I’m in the moment. I’m not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow, but right now,” she says. >

“When I was in family practice, my patients used to feel like I was there forever with them in the room,” Dr. Garmon-Brown explains. “I wasn’t, but because I touched them and listened to them, they thought I was there forever. Sometimes you really have to stop the madness and say, ‘I’ve got to focus on what this person needs from me right now.’ ”

Growing up in poverty in Detroit, Mich., and moving to Windsor on the cusp of the Civil Rights movement, the 12-year-old wasn’t exactly a welcome site at her formerly allwhite junior high. In 11th grade, when her chemistry class was asked to vote on “most likely to succeed,” Dr. Garmon-Brown, the only African-American in the class, was given the dubious title of “least likely to succeed.” But she proved them wrong and became the only doctor from that class. She came to Charlotte to work at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center), becoming the first African American female in family medicine there. Each step in her career seems to have been determined by where she could help the most, and she’s made lasting friendships all along the way. Over 20 years ago, when Tanya Blackmon, president of Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville, first moved to Charlotte, she chose Dr. Garmon-Brown as her physician. When the doctor moved out of private practice, the two became friends and are now like family. “I consider her my sister. I believe in what she does. I trust her and I enjoy being around her,” says Blackmon. “Ophelia is committed to the betterment of all people, regardless of your walk in life or your level of authority. he numbers are impressive: Twenty-nine years of service in the cable industry … a customer base of nearly 6 million … and innumerable hours spent in the Charlotte community helping others. It all adds up to Time Warner Cable’s Carol Hevey being named the 26th woman honored with the Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year award, offered

annually by Queens University of Charlotte. Hevey, an Ohio native who has been executive vice president for Time Warner Cable’s East Region since 2009, was honored for her business acumen and her contributions to the community at a March 14 luncheon at Queens University.

“Carol has been a constant beacon of success at our company, both in her operational and leadership capabilities,” says Rob Marcus, Time Warner Cable president and chief operating officer. “Her success can be attributed to her steadfast focus on what truly matters — our employees and customers.” The Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year Award recognizes women who exhibit the leadership values defined by The McColl School of Business at Queens — competence, character, and commitment to the community. Past winners include Joan Zimmerman, Jennifer Appleby, Cathy Bessant, Patricia Rodgers, and Ruth Shaw. “Carol Hevey is known for her visionary leadership at Time Warner Cable, and has been selfless in her devotion to community service,” says Pamela Davies, president of Queens. It’s safe to say that the majority of Time Warner Cable customers are unaware that

behind the scenes, there is a civic-minded, customer-service dynamo named Carol Hevey. Hevey is responsible for cable operations serving 5.9 million residential video and commercial, high-speed data, digital phone, and wireless residential and commercial customers.

It’s a big job. Time Warner Cable is the second-largest cable operator in the country, with Hevey overseeing its operations in the East, from Maine to South Carolina, including New York City. “As the executive vice president of operations for the East Region, I lead 17,000 employees, and, while it’s easy for my day to fill up with meetings and conference calls, I make a concerted effort to spend time visiting our operations and talking with our employees,” Hevey says. “I believe that my primary role as a leader is to hire great people and then make sure that they have all of the tools, resources and guidance they need to effectively do their jobs. >

Civic-Centered Hevey serves on the board of directors of Charlotte Center City Partners and the Central Piedmont Community College Foundation. She is on the board of advisors for N.C. Governor’s Conference for Women, and the executive committee for the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. Her most recent efforts include becoming the 2011 chairperson of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign, a dynamic program that is dedicated to making the public aware that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. “We are so appreciative of Carol’s passionate leadership of the Go Red For Women campaign, and for helping us take the campaign to the next level,” says Chrissy Malinky, development director of Go Red For Women and the Heart Ball. “She is the epitome of

grace, humility, and devotion. We are honored to be working with her to create critical awareness and raise funds in the fight against heart disease in women.” Hevey is no stranger to civic honors. In addition to the Charlotte BusinessWoman of the Year award, she was named to the 2010 Charlotte USA 20: Celebrating Dynamic Women list. She is a past winner of the Power Women in Cable award from Cable Fax Magazine and the Multichannel News’ Wonder Women award. Throughout her career, Hevey has evidenced a passion for communication, leadership, and networking. She has spent much of her professional life creating initiatives to bolster both consumer and employee satisfaction. At Time Warner Cable, Hevey helped form a regional operating structure to assist the company in serving the region’s customers and 17,000 employees. She founded Time Warner Cable’s diversity council and the company’s women’s leadership council, and currently chairs both councils. Both groups encourage diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the company. TCW

The Interview Think stylish sophistication. • A sleek pencil skirt and polished heels or a pair of straight cut, classic black pants will paint a poised, yet posh persona. • Make yourself stand out by opting for a bold color or moderately ruffled blouse underneath a tailored blazer. • Choose delicate accessories that are not distracting. • To finish it off, carry a simple satchel with all of your interview-ready belongings.

The Meeting

The Business Trip Although you may feel jet-lagged, you don’t want to look jet-lagged. • Opt for pieces that are comfortable, yet professional-looking. • You can’t go wrong with a simple, classic pair of black trousers. • Step into a pair of chic, embellished flats to make for easy traveling. • Finish your look off with a statement piece of jewelry, such as a bold necklace.

Casual Friday Maintain a career-centric style while employing a laid-back look.

Show your co-workers you mean business with a fresh, feminine twist on traditional office attire.

• Swap your blazer for a sleek faux-leather jacket, paired with a feminine top.

• Pair a soft, knit sweater with a tailored pair of pants.

• Choose a slimming dark denim pant for a polished but informal look.

• Match your outfit with simple, geometric accessories in gold or silver.

• A tall, trendy riding boot will really amp up your ensemble.

• Don’t be afraid to throw a fun, textured scarf on top of your sweater to add a pop of color.

• Pull your look together with a get-noticed pendant necklace. >

• A classic pair of square-toed heels will never go out of style and are perfect for finishing off the look.

The Client Dinner Maintain a sophisticated 9-to-5 style, but add fashionable afterhour flair. • Add a slim silhouette-cinching belt over your cardigan or dress to make a statement. • Choose a small clutch and sleek slingback shoes. • Don’t pass up on bold, gold jewelry to complete your dinner-ready look.

Horses And History Steeplechasing traces its roots to the 1700s in Ireland, where two horsemen reputedly decided to race from one town’s church steeple to another. Steeples, the tallest point on the horizon, served as an obvious finish line for racing gentry. Price says the pomp and circumstance of today’s event finds its roots in those early races, when horsemen were typically wealthy gentlemen. “If you go to a steeplechase in England,” she says, “you will find a lot of spectators in suits. Not just coats and ties, but, literally, suits.”

Concerned About Your Hormonal Health? Modern-day steeplechases here in the U.S. offer a more casual style of dress. At the Queen’s Cup, fashions vary depending on the viewing area. “If you are on Members Hill, where the lawn boxes and the sponsor tents are, people will typically be very dressed up in hats and sundresses — tastefully and fancifully dressed, but not over-the-top,” Price says. “As you get to the infield, where the younger crowd tends to be, you’ll see more shorts and polo shirts. We encourage country club attire, but it’s varied. You’ll see a little bit of everything.” Throughout the field, it’s common to see seasonable sundresses in all shades of pastels, seersucker jackets, Bermuda shorts, the occasional bow tie, and, of course, fanciful hats. “It’s a little like the Kentucky Derby,” Price says. “I think that people, especially in the springtime, just love to dress up. It’s a rite of spring. You’ll see women in their sundresses even when it’s pouring rain. They are just not going to give up on that dress they bought, no matter the weather.” >

A Tale Of Tailgating Carrington Price says the tailgating competition is one of the most popular elements of the Queen’s Cup. In fact, many tailgating enthusiasts plan their theme, menu, and décor a year in advance. Even the element of tailgating finds its roots in history. “Back in the day, people used to take their picnic baskets and beverages/flasks to the fox hunts,” Price says. “And it just evolved into something quite grand.”

The Sport Of Socializing The Queen’s Cup is sporting event meets social occasion. It offers a tailgating and hat competition, children’s activities, and six different steeplechase races. Price, who grew up attending steeplechases, and whose husband, Bill, is a former amateur jockey, says you don’t have to be an elitist to enjoy the event, or a horse aficionado. “The average Queen’s Cup attendee is someone who wants to come out and enjoy the countryside with friends and tailgate, and enjoy the setting,” she says. “When we look at the pictures from the event, we laugh at the number of people who aren’t actually watching the horse race. My husband, Bill, likes to say, ‘It’s a lawn party, and the horses are invited.’ ” Mint juleps are truly part of the tradition, and hats are not only fun, but practical elements of the steeplechase, as they afford much-needed protection from the sun. A mix of sporting event and social scene, the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase, April 30, in Mineral Springs, promises to be the perfect celebration of spring. Attendees arrive in styles ranging from sundresses and seersucker jackets to shorts and polo shirts. Hats for the ladies are always a practical and fun addition to a race day ensemble.

essentials include sunscreen, and a comfortable lawn chair or blanket. Gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. The opening ceremony begins at 11:45, and the post time for the first of six races is 1:30 p.m. After a day at the races, all patrons are invited to attend the Hot Walk Party, which includes dancing to a live band, free hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar. Fun and fashion aren’t the only rules of the day, however. The Queen’s Cup Steeplechase is produced by Charlotte Steeplechase Association, a federally recognized nonprofit

that has donated over $470,000 to local and regional charities since 1995. In 2011, proceeds will go to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and Western North Carolina. TCW

ToLearnMore Tickets come in a range of package options, including $35 general admission tickets, available at Harris Teeter. But to truly enjoy all that steeplechasing has to offer, Price encourages patrons to purchase a reserved infield tailgating spot; prices start at $150. For information, visit queenscup.org.

ike most religions, Judaism developed from a patriarchal society. Laws were recorded and interpreted by men, and men typically wrote the traditional prayers. Contemporary Jewish women are redefining their roles in the celebration of the Passover Seder, by incorporating a symbol of the prophet Miriam: Miriam’s cup. According to tradition, Miriam was honored by God with a well of clear spring water. As the

Many families now honor Miriam by including one cup or goblet on the Passover table. Guests are invited to help fill the cup with water, and the cup may be dedicated to a woman who has made important contributions in achieving equality and freedom for others. TCW

Dermis Dictionary The ABCs Of Skin By Jennifer Bradford-Epstein

acid mantle - A thin, acidic film that acts as a barrier to keep skin moisturized and keeps bacteria out of pores. astringent - A solution that removes oil from the skin. Often used after a facial wash to remove any remaining traces of cleanser. benzoyl peroxide - Topical antibacterial agent used to treat acne. Found in more over-the-counter and prescription products than any other topical agent. blackhead - A dark acne lesion that occurs when a clogged pore’s surface remains open and a chemical reaction causes the surface to darken. The blackhead is not dirt, so it can’t be washed away.

cyst - Cysts occur when clogged pores break under the skin causing bigger and often very painful bumps. If left untreated, these cysts can cause scarring. eczema - An inflammatory condition of the skin, most commonly occurring on the face, knees, hands, or feet, that is almost always itchy. Sometimes the itching will start before the rash appears. exfoliant - Skin care products that break down and remove dead cells that naturally build up on the skin’s surface. noncomedogenic - A term applied to oils, lotions, and skin creams that do not block pores.

W o m a n

3/20/11 10:44 AM

keratosis pilaris - A common condition in which the hair follicles become clogged, making the skin feel like sandpaper. Similar in appearance to “goose bumps,” they are found on the backs of the upper arms and thighs. Less commonly, bumps appear on the face and may be mistaken for acne. pH - Skin naturally has a slightly acidic pH of between four and 6.5, which stops our skin and body from absorbing bacteria. pimple or papule - These inflammatory lesions occur when a clogged pore becomes infected by bacteria, causing a tender, red, raised bump to appear on the skin. pustule - A papule that contains pus, which is the body’s way of reacting to a bacterial infection. pore - A small opening in the skin that contains a hair and an oil-producing gland. rosacea - A common acne-like skin condition, which causes pink or red patches, visible tiny broken blood vessels, small red bumps, or red cysts. sebum - naturally occurring oil, which lubricates the skin. It is supposed to carry dead skin cells up to the surface, but when there is too much of it, it clogs the pores leading to whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and cysts. salicylic acid - Ingredient found in many overthe-counter acne products because of its ability to penetrate your pores. It exfoliates the outer layers of the skin, helping keep the pores clear of cellular debris. sebaceous glands - Located in the dermis next to hair follicles, these are small, sack-shaped glands that release sebum onto the hair and moisturize the skin. SPF (Sun Protection Factor) - All sunscreens are currently labeled with an SPF that lets you know how long you can stay in the sun before burning. Wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to get adequate sun protection. whitehead - Small, swollen pores under the skin that are filled with dead skin cells and sebum.

Facing Up To The Facts A d v i c e F r o m Th e E x p e r t s

bio-identical

hormone replacement

therapy

The American Academy of Dermatology provides a wealth of information on caring for your skin. Here are just a few of their tips:

Do … • apply acne products to clean skin, and cover the entire area. Don’t just spot treat. • give acne treatments time to work. It can take anywhere from four to 12 weeks to see improvement. • wash your hands before touching or rubbing your face, and try not to rest your chin, cheek, or forehead on your hand. Touching your face can spread the bacteria that cause acne. • wash your hair regularly, especially if it’s oily, and keep it out of your face. • keep hair gels, hairspray, and other hair products away from your face, as they can clog your pores. Wash your face after you use these products to keep oils away. • do keep using acne-fighting products even after your skin has cleared. • always wear a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to all exposed skin.

Don’t … • pick, pop, or squeeze pimples or anything on your face — no matter how tempting! Popping pimples can push infected material further into the skin, leading to more swelling and redness, and even scarring. • use abrasive products, as they can irritate your skin, and irritated skin is more prone to breakouts. • use moisturizers or sunscreens that have oil in them. Look for a label that says “oil free” or “noncomedogenic,” and make sure you use a facial moisturizer, not a body moisturizer. • tan. Some people claim that their acne clears with sun exposure. The truth is, tanning can be very damaging to the skin, and many acne products will require you to protect your skin from the sun. TCW

Building On Green Trends To Watch This Year

Earth Advantage Institute, a leading nonprofit green building resource and research organization that has certified more than 11,000 sustainable homes, each year highlights the top-10 green home and building trends to watch. The trends, which range from “affordable green” to lifecycle analysis of materials, were identified based on discussions with policymakers, builders, developers, architects, real estate brokers, appraisers, lenders, and homeowners.

One Affordable Green Many consumers typically associate green and energy-efficient homes and features with higher costs. However, the development of new business models, technologies, and the mainstreaming of high-performance materials is bringing highperformance, healthy homes within reach of many more homeowners. Leading the charge are affordable housing groups, including Habitat for Humanity and local land trusts, now building and selling LEED® and ENERGY STAR®-certified homes across the country at price points as low as $100,000. In the existing homes market, energy upgrades are sometimes available through new programs that include low-cost audits and utility bill-based financing.

Two Sharing & Comparing Home Energy Use As social and purchasing sites like Facebook and

Groupon add millions more members, the sharing of home energy consumption data — for rewards — is not far behind. The website Earth Aid (earthaid.net) lets you track home energy usage and earn rewards for energy savings from local vendors. You can also elect to share the information with others on Earth Aid to see who can conserve the most energy. When coupled with other developments, including home energy displays, a voluntary home energy scoring system announced by the Department of Energy, more people will be sharing — and comparing — their home energy consumption.

Three Outcome-Based Energy Codes Existing buildings are responsible for most energy use and associated carbon emissions, but the prescriptive energy codes used in commercial remodels don’t encourage effective retrofitting. Compliance with energy codes is determined at permit time, using prescriptive or predictive models, and actual post-construction may never even

be reviewed. Heating and cooling equipment could be faulty or improperly controlled, with significant energy and financial implications. Under outcomebased energy codes, owners could pursue the retrofit strategy that they decide is most effective for their building and its tenants, but they would be required to achieve a pre-negotiated performance target through mandatory annual reporting. The City of Seattle and the New Building Institute have teamed up with the National Trusts’ Preservation Green Lab to pioneer a framework for just such a code, for both new and existing buildings. Other cities may not be far behind.

Four Community Purchasing Power Neighborhoods interested in renewable energy will increasingly band together to obtain better pricing on materials, such as solar panels, and on installation costs. The Solarize Portland program was initiated by local neighborhood leaders who wanted to increase the amount of renewable

W o m a n

3/24/11 4:41 PM

energy generated in Northeast Portland by working together as a community. The program is structured so that the price of solar panel installation decreases for everybody as more neighbors join the effort. Group purchasing creates a 15 to 25 percent savings below current prices. This group discount, in addition to current available tax credits and cash incentives, gives participants a significant cost savings. In Philadelphia, the Retrofit Philly program leverages contests between residential blocks to get neighborhoods involved in energy upgrades.

Five Grid-Aware Appliances Fuel Convergence Of Smart Grid And Smart Homes While many residential smart meters have been installed, the customer interface that will allow homeowners to track energy use more accurately is not yet in place. In the meantime, manufacturers are increasingly introducing appliances that are “grid-aware.” These appliances are endowed with more sophisticated energy management capabilities and timers, offering homeowners machines that monitor and report their own electricity usage and that increase or decrease that usage by remote command. Many machines have timers and can already be manually programmed to run during offpeak hours. These developments will begin forging the convergence of a smart grid infrastructure and the control applications needed to manage energy savings in our buildings and homes.

Six Accessory Dwelling Units Last year, home “right-sizing” was a trend. With fewer people moving or building due to financial concerns, many have chosen to stay put in their favorite area and build accessory dwelling units. These small independent units, which can be used for offices, studios, or in-law space, are the

ideal size for energy savings and sustainable construction. As detached or attached rental units, they help cities increase urban density and restrict sprawl, while allowing homeowners to add value to their property. The cities of Portland, Ore., and Santa Cruz, Calif., have waived administrative fees to encourage more ADU construction.

Seven Rethinking Residential Heating & Cooling Advances in applied building science in the U.S. and abroad have resulted in homes that are so tightly sealed and insulated that furnace-less, ductless homes are now a reality. The increasingly popular “Passive House” standard, for example, calls for insulation in walls and ceiling that is so thick that the home is actually heated by everyday activity of the occupants, from cooking to computer use. Even in ENERGY STAR-certified homes, builders are now encouraged to bring all ductwork inside the insulated envelope of the house to eliminate excess heat or cooling loss, and to use only small but efficient furnaces and air conditioners to avoid wasting power. Geothermal heating and cooling, where piping loops are run through the ground to absorb warmth in the winter and cool air in the summer, are another option gaining broader acceptance.

Eight Residential Gray Water Use With water shortages looming in many areas, recycling of gray water — any household wastewater with the exception of toilet water — is gaining traction. Benefits include reduced water use, reduced strain on septic and storm water systems, and groundwater replenishment. Although many cities have been slow to legislate on gray water use, some communities have increased the amount of allowable gray water used for irrigation. Systems can be as simple as a pipe draining directly into a

mulch field or they can incorporate collection tanks and pumps.

Nine Small Commercial Certification Ninety-five percent of commercial building starts in the U.S. are under 50,000 square feet, but the bulk of current certified commercial buildings tend to be much larger. This is, in part, because of numerous “soft” costs including commissioning, energy modeling, project registration, and administrative time, all of which can be prohibitively expensive for small building owners and developers. To encourage more small commercial projects to go green, alternative certification programs have sprung up, including Earthcraft Light Commercial and Earth Advantage Commercial, which have found significant appeal through fully subscribed pilot programs.

Ten Lifecycle Analysis We know quite a bit about the performance of certain materials used in high-performance home and commercial building construction, but the industry has just begun to study the effects of these materials over the course of their entire lives, from raw material extraction through disposal and decomposition. Lifecycle analysis examines the impact of materials over their lifetime through the lens of environmental indicators, including embodied energy, solid waste, air and water pollution, and global warming potential. LCA for building materials will allow architects to determine what products are more sustainable and what combination of products can produce the most environmentally friendly results. ccording to research from the Medical University of South Carolina, rodents fed a diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol displayed impairment in working memory. This memory loss is associated with inflammation in the brain. Assuming that the same phenomenon occurs in people, the study suggests that as human’s age, memory may be preserved and

brain functions improved by restricting the consumption of cholesterol and saturated fats. And, just as with physical health, our brains benefit from a variety of nutrients, including fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. James Joseph, co-author of The Color Code: A Revolutionary Eating Plan for Optimum Health, offers tips on what you should be eating to give your memory a boost.

A Tasteful Approach Brightly Colored Fruits Dark berries are high in antioxidants that can help keep blood vessels in the brain clear and protect brain cells from free radical damage. Eat fruits like blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries. Blueberries have been shown to actually reverse age-related memory shortfalls in humans and animals. Oranges, cherries, plums, and red grapes are also great memory foods. Leafy & Colorful Vegetables Vegetables also protect the brain from damage and deteriorating memory, so eat lots of bright greens in the form of broccoli, spinach, kale, sprouts, bell peppers, and asparagus. Eggplant, corn, and even onions and garlic are good memory veggies. Omega-3 Fatty Acids These essential fatty acids, an important part of brain cell membranes, are not produced by our bodies and, therefore, must be consumed in food. The best food source is fatty fish such as trout, mackerel, and salmon. Folic Acid Found in various foods, including spinach, orange juice, and yeast, adequate levels of folic acid are essential for brain function. Folate supplementation, either by itself or in conjunction with other B vitamins, has been shown to be effective in preventing cognitive decline and dementia during aging. 54

very five years, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture jointly release dietary guidelines with the goal of promoting good health and preventing chronic disease. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans specifically addresses obesity in the United States by emphasizing caloric intake and increased physical activity. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack stresses, “The bottom line is that most Americans need to trim our waistlines to reduce the risk of developing diet-related chronic disease. Improving our eating habits is not only good for every individual and family, but also for our country.” The report’s main messages and tips include the following: •• Monitor calories from both food and beverages, including

alcoholic drinks, fruit juice, and soda. •• Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. •• Replace refined grains with whole grains. •• Add seafood to your diet — two 8-ounce servings a week. •• Switch to low-fat or fat-free dairy products. •• Check packaging, and choose products that are lower sodium and that don’t include added sugars and solid fats. •• Drink water instead of sugary drinks. •• Enjoy the food you eat, but eat less of it by avoiding oversized portions. •• Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals, and choose the foods with lower numbers. To read the guidelines, visit http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/ DietaryGuidelines.htm.

Memory Aid

A Walk To Remember As brain size decreases with age, our memories tend to suffer. But new research published in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, gives us yet another reason to make healthy eating and exercise a part of our daily routines. Kirk L. Erickson, Ph.D., with the University of Pittsburgh, measured the brain size of 299 dementia-free individuals over nine years. The study found that those who walked at least 72 blocks per week, or roughly six to nine miles, had a greater volume of gray matter than people who didn’t walk as much. And those who walked the most cut their risk of developing memory loss in half. >

pending too many restless nights counting sheep? You may want to vacuum your bedroom, wash your sheets, and make your bed before you reach for a sleeping aid. Results from a National Sleep Foundation survey of 1,500 randomly selected U.S. adults suggest that people sleep much better when their bedrooms are comfortable and clean. “We’ve looked a lot at how medical and behavioral issues affect sleep, but we really hadn’t looked at the sleep environment in such depth,” says David Cloud, NSF chief operating officer. “Frankly, we were surprised to see that senses like touch, feel, and smell were so important.” Among the findings: • • Seven out of 10 people said they made

their beds every day or almost every day. The bed-makers were 19 percent more likely to report getting a good night’s sleep on most days. • • Between two-thirds and three-fourths of respondents rated a cool room temperature; fresh air; and a dark, quiet, and clean room as important for a good night’s sleep. • • Six out of 10 said they changed their sheets weekly or more often, and roughly three out of four people said they got a more comfortable night’s sleep when their sheets had a fresh scent. While fluffed pillows and scented sheets are not likely to solve serious sleep problems, changing the bedroom environment to make it more comfortable can help occasional poor sleepers rest easier.

Coffee Conundrum

Quitting Caffeine Carefully Did you know that up to 90 percent of adult Americans consume caffeine every day? Most commonly, the caffeine is in coffee, tea, soft drinks, and chocolate. Many people who consume caffeine on a regular basis report that they experience a variety of unpleasant symptoms when this popular stimulant is withdrawn, similar to the symptoms felt with the withdrawal of other addictive substances. The terms “caffeine addiction” and “caffeine dependence” are commonly used, but, to date, there is not scientific proof that caffeine meets the criteria to induce a complete addiction. Several case studies, however, have shown that caffeine was able to induce a clinical dependence similar to that induced by other psychoactive drugs in some people. Despite the debate over whether true caffeine addiction is possible, “caffeine withdrawal” is a known clinical condition with predictable symptoms. Doctors at Johns Hopkins University confirmed that withdrawal symptoms can occur even when small amounts (corresponding to about one cup of coffee per day) of caffeine are consumed. In a review of 170 years of caffeine research, the Hopkins team examined 57 separate studies and found that the features of caffeine withdrawal can vary and may include headache, fatigue, or drowsiness, depression, irritability, difficulty concentrating, nausea and/or vomiting, and muscle pain or stiffness. The withdrawal symptoms typically began 12 to 24 hours after the last dose of caffeine, became most severe after one to two days, and lasted for two to nine days. If you want to cut down on caffeine, experts advise doing so slowly. Decrease your consumption gradually over a period of days (or weeks, if you’re a heavy consumer) to avoid being plagued by withdrawal symptoms. TCW

Get Your Walk On n Sat., April 16, Mecklenburg residents will step out against a chronic illness affecting 400,000 Americans — 8,000 of whom live in the Carolinas. The annual Walk MS: Charlotte event, a 2- to 4-mile community walk, raises money and awareness to help people with multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. Last year’s event drew 1,500 participants and raised $205,000 to fight MS. 2011 Walk MS: Charlotte, one of 15 Walk MS events across the region, will start at 8:30 a.m. in Symphony Park behind SouthPark mall. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome, and routes are accessible for people of all mobility levels. There is no cost to walk, but participants are encouraged to fundraise prior to the walk.
