Jeff Curry, Publisher/Editor Our cover story starts with your room from the ground up with flooring. Hard surfaces—hardwood floors, ceramic tiles and laminate, are dominating the flooring options, and, in contrast, the carpeting trends continue to move towards the softer, textured and more luxurious looks. Area rugs not only add warmth and comfort to the rooms, but rugs are leading the way as one of the hottest flooring features. There is no shortage of design choices on flooring. Also inside is a feature on window treatments. They do more than just dress a window, they filter and direct light during the day and keep the darkness out at night. They also provide privacy and insulation from the elements outside. Find out more about shutters as a solution. It seems that more and more people have the ability to work from home with the growth of the Internet. Today’s home offices need to be more functional and efficient while still fitting into the décor of your home. G R E E N : BUILD IT GREEN]

Kirei, Bamboo and other Green Materials BY

NATE TRAYLOR

APER-BASED COUNTERTOPS, CARPETS MADE OF GRASS— welcome to the home of the future! In the last several years, green building has made huge inroads toward making sustainable materials look ‘mainstream’ and not so identifiably ‘earthy.’ In fact, green homes are just as sturdy, luxurious and comfortable as those structured with traditional building materials— and much healthier to live in. Innovative green-building practices are utilizing materials that are seldom used in conventional residential construction, which gives traditional building materials, such as lumber, a much-needed reprieve. Take Kirei Board for example. Made from stalks of sorghum plants— a rapidly renewing resource grown around the world as a food source— this alternative to wood can be used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry and horizontal surfacing. Lightweight and very durable, it only uses a minimal amount of wood as bonding strips. Bamboo, like the sorghum plant, grows rapidly and is a strong, durable substitute for wood. Harvesting the material can be done by hand and it does not need to be replanted because it re-grows from the same roots. Cork isn’t just for bottling wine anymore; it’s also a durable flooring solution. It’s a bit softer than traditional hardwoods, and its porous surface acts as acoustical and thermal insulation. Cork comes from the bark of the cork oak tree—the only tree that restores bark after it is harvested. How about a carpet made of grass or hemp? There are several grass and hemp-based carpet options available on the market that boast strong weaves. Carpets made from sea grass cannot be dyed, so your color options are a bit limited, but a material resistant to dye is also resistant to stains. That’s good news to the accident-prone or families with children. For sustainable countertops, consider paper. As unlikely as it sounds, Richlite paper-based countertops are fairly impervious to scratches, heat and stains. This alternative to stone and plastic is comprised of pulp from trees in sustainable forests regulated by strict environmental mandates. The use of these aforementioned materials can help us leave a lighter eco footprint. As an added benefit, many of these are low-emissions materials, which make for a healthier home. See firsthand how alternative materials can be used in your home during Build It Green’s South Bay Home Tour on Sunday, September 28. Visit www.builditgreen.org for more information.

FOCUS ON FLOORS HAT YOU CHOOSE TO PUT UNDER YOUR FEET SIGNALS to visitors how you use the room and your style, even before they register drapes or furnishing: A carpet can say plush; a hardwood floor can say elegant or rustic, and tile almost universally signals a bathroom or kitchen—someplace where a lot of water gets used. Whether you’re looking for rustic, elegant, opulent, or kidfriendly rooms, start at the bottom: consider foot traffic. How much wear and tear will the room receive? If you’re talking about a hallway, you’ll want to choose a sturdier material like hardwood, tile, vinyl, or Berber-style carpet that stands up well to heavy traffic. Also ask yourself what will be spilled in the room you’re working on: Consider a waterproof floor like laminate, vinyl, or tile in a child’s playroom or in the kitchen. And, finally, decide your color palette before purchasing your flooring. That way you’re sure to have a cohesive room. If you’re simply replacing your floors, bring samples and photos of the existing furnishings in the room with you when you select flooring.

W

HARDWOOD Hardwood floors may be back in vogue, but they’ve been the go-to flooring material for generations for their varied, sturdy, and dependable nature. Today you can choose traditional woods such as maple, oak, or hickory, or go more exotic with dark cherry or 12

light and airy—and sustainable—bamboo flooring. You can choose prefinished floors with a high-gloss or low-gloss finish, polyurethane finish, or water-based urethanes. The advantage of hardwood floors is that well-maintained floors can last decades and provide a warm, elegant look for any room. Not only do wood floors look warm, but they are also literally warmer than some other flooring types. Naturally thick, wood floors boast natural insulation that’s several times greater than ceramic, laminate, or vinyl tiles. The disadvantage of hardwoods is they require upkeep. Be sure to ask dealers how they recommend maintaining the floors. Some recommend damp mopping floors to clean them thoroughly, but others oppose it. Some encourage frequent waxing to keep the finish pristine, but waxing can limit your options down the road when you want to refinish your floor. Although wood’s natural insulation makes it eco friendly from the start, you can also get woods certified by the Forest Stewardship Council or reclaimed lumber. The FSC is an independent, international nonprofit that certifies forests are harvested responsibly. Some companies—like Cascadia Forest Goods, Endura Wood Products, and Windfall Lumber and Milling—specialize in sustainably harvested wood and wood reclaimed from salvage yards. Other wood types like bamboo grow quickly and are by their nature environmentally friendly. >>

LAMINATE Gone are the days of choosing between real wood or fake-looking substitutes. Today’s homeowners have high-tech options: laminates, which use high-quality film images to create the look of wood and other textures, are strong, durable, resist stains, and easier to maintain than wood. They can look like anything: Manufacturers like Armstrong, Shaw, and others offer laminate planks, strips, and tiles that look like red bricks, Italian stone, pebbles, and marble. Shaw even offers to let homeowners choose a wood-like laminate that’s specific down to the wood species. Some also use high-tech processes to mimic the feel of wood grain. These technologically advanced floors save you money but also save trees by using wood products like high-density fiberboard instead of virgin wood. Made of four layers, laminates have two layers designed to prevent moisture absorption. And because it’s not real wood, a laminate floor doesn’t require the same maintenance and isn’t subject to the same warping, rot, and infestation as wood. There’s no need to refinish and wax laminates like Pergo and Armstrong floors. Simply wipe up spills promptly, sweep regularly, and occasionally wash with manufacturer-approved stain removers. Laminates often carry extensive warranties and can last 20 years with little maintenance, but they are harder to repair than wood floors. Once a laminate plank is damaged, it’s either fixed with a manufacturer-specific binder or, if larger, the plank must be replaced.

But today’s resilient flooring includes more than linoleum. It offers sophisticated and Earth-friendly options—including cork, vinyl, and even leather—and features a resilient inner core that traps noise and makes it easier underfoot. Take a new look at linoleum. It’s more than the institutional gray you may remember from grade school. It’s available in a variety of styles and designs, featuring modern, warm colors, wood-like patterns, and even mimics stone, all at a lower cost and with less maintenance. As with wood, resilient floors like cork insulate your home and keep it cooler in summer in warmer in the winter. They also can be as opulent and exotic or as functional and affordable as you like. Consider Jelinek cork floor tiles that look at act like parquet floors, or think about where a dark, rich, and resilient leather floor

RESILIENT FLOORING There’s a reason linoleum has been one of the most popular flooring types for decades: As with all resilient flooring, linoleum is completely waterproof, doesn’t tend to trap dust, resists stains, and is easily cleaned. It’s also among the less expensive flooring types available.

would fit best. The added benefit of cork? It’s made of renewable material without cutting down a single tree. Leather floor tiles from manufacturers like Edelman Leather are made from the center of the hide, where the leather is thickest. Many linoleum and vinyl styles are also elegant. If you’re more economically minded, vinyl and linoleum are both good selections. They are available in sheets, stick-on tiles and planks, and come in everything from low-cost, high-style designs to multicolored tiles that resemble slate, travertine, and marble.

Photo: Forbo Flooring (www.forbo.com)

TILE If you want an airy, sophisticated look, consider tile. Ceramic, porcelain, or stone materials like travertine or marble are popular. They vary in strength, durability, and finish. Many are quite strong and provide a timeless look while standing up well to common household conditions such as water and heavy foot traffic. Start by making sure your tiles are designed for floor use. Then choose a material. Look for the strongest you can get of any stone type; it will be more durable. If you’re considering ceramic, look for “atomized” tiles with a light, matte finish. Shinier and darker glazes are usually softer and will need more refinishing. Porcelain tile is like ceramic but is mostly made of a harder stone and therefore withstands moisture and weight better. Travertine, marble, granite, and limestone are natural, quarried stones that are hard and withstand tremendous weight and wear with little maintenance. The advantage of stone is that it’s natural and versatile. The hundreds of colors, finishes, sizes, and shapes will suit just about any room in the house. Consider combining different styles and

thmRESOURCE.com

S T Y L E ]

types to create focal points. Tumbled marble looks elegant and is long-wearing. Terra-cotta tiles are casual and warm. Many stones like porcelain, marble, and granite resist stains and are strong enough to take tremendous wear, and most don’t fade. Generally speaking, maintenance is simple: Sweep, mop occasionally, and scrub tough spots. Be sure to rinse your tile floors completely because any residue can trap dirt and make your floor dirty again quickly. Check to see if your stone floor will need to be sealed after installation: Polished porcelain or terra-cotta must be sealed, but others shouldn’t be. Those tiles will need regular sealing and maintenance. Stone is generally not a recycled material, but you can check to see if your stone tiles have a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating. That certification rates the energy efficiency of products your home.

CARPET If you want cozy, you want carpet. Whether you go with plush Saxony wall-to-wall, low-pile Berber, peel-and-stick modular carpet, or an area rug, what you’re getting is a warm floor that’s inviting to cold feet. Carpet can be made of anything from wool to polyester to acrylic fibers, treated with stain-resistant coatings, and made of every imaginable pile style. It’s also designed with patterns, colors, and styles to suit any room. A high-traffic area like a hallway or family room calls for a densely tufted carpet with a low pile height. For dining rooms, where food and drink will probably fall from time to time, choose a stain-resistant carpet or rug with a low pile that’s easily cleaned. Bedrooms may call for a twisted carpet that’s soft and casual. If you go with a wall-to-wall carpet, be sure to try out your carpet with a carpet pad underneath. The right pad will cushion your feet, insulate the room, and stabilize your footing. Area rugs soften hard surfaces like hardwood or tile flooring. Laid over them (and over a rug pad that keeps it from skidding), area rugs offer color and style, and have the advantage of separating our seating areas in great rooms or large spaces. Area rugs can also bring a cultured look into the room, with Persian or Oriental rugs, or Latin American-style rugs to complement your décor. Carpet does require upkeep, however. Regular vacuuming keeps carpet clean and many manufacturers recommend deep-cleaning your carpet every two years and spot-cleaning stains. Carpets can stain and, when in direct sunlight, fade. Some carpet types, like wool, must be protected against moths and carpets because they can trap debris and can attract dust mites and other allergens. THM

Fabulous Fireplaces Elegance combines with energy efficiency in a new fireplace. BY

GABRIELLE SAVERI

F YOU ARE LOOKING TO REVAMP AN OLD FIREPLACE, or put in one where there wasn’t one before, you might want to visit The Fireplace Element, a Mountain View– based company that can elegantly reface your fireplace and make it more energy efficient. The Fireplace Element specializes in custom fireplace mantels from materials such as limestone, lava, travertine, stainless steel, glass, CaesarStone, and exotic woods. If you want to create a new look for your fireplace, the company can help you design, build, and install it. Although the company provides architectural limestone elements for the entire home, most often customers come to replace an outdated mantel or convert a wood-burning fireplace to an eco-friendly gas fireplace. In a recent project, The Fireplace Element was asked to help modernize an old wood-burning stove in the master bedroom that was set against a brick wall. The work took five days. The homeowners went from a wood-burning stove, which provided sufficient heat but was not energy efficient, to a high-efficiency gas fireplace of 40,000 BTUs. The new direct-vent gas fireplace provides high efficiency while the sophisticated style of the limestone mantel has transformed the room. The new fireplace also provides zone heating, and the homeowners can use a remote control to set the room temperature and program how long they want the unit to operate. High-efficiency gas fireplaces are easy to use and designed for ambiance as well as heat. They’re also convenient and programmable—that’s why they’re so popular.

Custom showering experience for your home. BY JENNY JEDEIKIN

OMEOWNERS SEEKING TO TRANSFORM THEIR BATHROOMS into modern day personal spas, no longer have to stick to traditionally shaped showers when it comes to design and construction. Thanks to California Shower Door Corporation— in business in San Francisco since 1935—customers are free to break the mold when creating their luxury showering experience. This year CSDC’s ability to reinvent the “rain box” was put to test when they were approached with an unusual request from a client in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, who had designed her own

unique shower. “A woman came to us who wanted us to build an eightfoot-high completely enclosed shower which had all odd angles and extended into the center of the room,” says CSDC President and CEO Thomas Nolan. “She had been told by other companies that it couldn’t be done because of its enormous size and odd shape.” But California Shower Door found a way to create exactly what the customer wanted, using their patented “Majestic” enclosures— the only shower enclosures guaranteed to be 100 percent water and steam tight—and custom-built thick frameless glass doors. The resulting shower, which doubles as a steam room, contains an operable glass transom window—to let steam out—a slanted crackedglass ceiling and is five feet wide. “This particular shower does not have a standard angle anywhere,” says Nolan, “so essentially we have constructed a box out of glass.” Aside from its unusual shape, one of the most striking features of the shower is the decorative cracked glass roof. “We used a piece of glass which goes through a process that breaks it,” explains Nolan, “but essentially holds it together in the same place, and you get this cracked glass effect, which is beautiful when the light comes through from above.” In addition to luxury custom-built shower doors like the one pictured here, CSDC also does standard-size doors and provides glass for stairway banisters, countertops, and roof systems. Serving the entire Bay Area from Healdsburg to Carmel on any given day, the company has been known to ship custom made orders all over the world. Fully employee-owned since 2003, CSDC takes pride in its employee track-record; over half of the employees have worked at the company for over ten years. “Employee ownership develops a great sense of pride for everything we accomplish and benefits everybody,” explains Nolan whose own career at CSDC began 27 years ago when he was still in high school. “I started working here when I was only sixteen in 1981, and now I’m President and CEO; It’s one of those ‘only in America’ stories, which is kinda cool.” Contact California Shower Door Corporation by calling (800) 675-6225, visiting their showroom at 1795 Yosemite Avenue, San Francisco, CA or by going to their website at www.calshowerdoor.com. GREEN S OFA I A new line of eco-friendly furniture

22

September/October 2008 THM San Francisco/San Mateo

T’S NOT YOUR MOTHER’S Green Apple sofa from the 60’s or your new Basil micro suede lounge chair; Nathan Anthony Margo sofa. “Green” upholstery is the latest offering from Artesanias unique home furnishings. “Whether you see it as a marketing catch-phrase or simply the latest trend, the reality of Eco-Friendly furniture is here to stay. It’s a simple matter of economics,” says Courtney Jones, CFO and buyer for the San Francisco based furniture stores. The spike in raw material costs over the last few years has driven thousands of overseas manufacturers out of business and left domestic manufacturers scrambling for new ways to manage costs while delivering the products people want. “Reclaimed, recycled, and sustainable materials are definitely one way to do that”, says Jones. With the introduction of their new Envi line by Nathan Anthony, Artesanias can now offer customers affordable, environmentally conscience upholstered furniture. “Traditionally, an eco-friendly, organic sofa started at five thousand dollars. With Envi, we can deliver the same quality and materials starting just over two thousand,” says Jones. The ability to customize furniture is the cornerstone of the Artesanias philosophy. “With so many different types of customer in the Bay Area, I quickly realized that custom products were a central component of our business, and Envi is a natural extension of that philosophy,” says Craig Kohler who founded Artesanias 5 years ago. Through a close relationship with Nathan Anthony, Artesanias has the ability

Unique and Innovative Garden Ornaments for All Your Landscaping & Decorating Needs THOUSANDS OF ITEMS ON DISPLAY to deliver a complete custom experience, from the size and style of the frame to the firmness of the seat cushions, and now, the actual materials going into each piece. “We see the Green market going in two directions”, says Jones. “There are those who want a completely organic sofa made from FSC-Certified wood, where hemp, jute and cotton replace polyester and latex replaces polyurethane foam. Then there are those who simply want a sofa that is eco-friendly, meaning a high quality, long-term investment that at the end of its life will not impact the environment. The Envi product has the flexibility to meet these needs as well as that of those who may fall somewhere in the middle.” Jones says response to the new line has been great. “Honestly, people have been asking for it since last year, and we have just been able to start selling it.” Envi is also available as an upgrade on Nathan Anthony’s full line of upholstered sofas, sectionals, dining chairs, beds and mattresses. In addition to Envi, Artesanias will be introducing new custom lines of bedroom and living room furniture, rugs, lighting and leather sectionals. As part of its evolution, Artesanías will be changing its name soon to Kohler Jones Interiors. Natural wood can enhance the look of your home.

Inner Beauty BY

MAGINE BRAZILIAN CHERRY FLOWING ACROSS THE FLOORS OR the impression a beautifully carved mantle can give to a fireplace. The gleaming richness of natural wood imparts strength and beauty to any room. Even the finishing touch of trim at baseboards and ceilings provides a subtle yet powerful impression of luxury and refinement. Finding the best wood from around the world and turning it into art to adorn your home is the business of Jackel Enterprises. Based in Watsonville, Jackel Enterprises stocks over 35 species of hardwood and softwood, and has worldwide contacts to find any type of wood needed for a project. Their in-house millwork services enable them to create flooring, molding, trim, siding, ceilings, or box beams in a variety of styles, finishes and textures. Jackel Enterprises provides materials and services to custom highend residential contractors, millwork shops, and product manufacturers, such as cabinetmakers, furniture craftsmen, and even wooden puzzle makers. With 17 years in business, Jackel has a reputation for quality wood and custom milled interior and exterior products. Recently an architect brought Jackel Enterprises in during the design phase of a 6500 square foot house in Atherton. “We used high quality Douglas Fir throughout the entire house, describes Steve Jackel, president of Jackel Enterprises. This wood was used for posts, ceiling treatments, and beams to achieve a rustic Mediterranean look. They even crafted a nine-foot-long timber log as the mantle for the stone fireplace.

One of Steve’s favorite projects is a traditional Japanese farmhouse in Bonny Doon. “This one was completely different from the Atherton house,” explains Steve. “It wasn’t the massive size and amount of wood that made this a beautiful home. In fact, it was the small details, down to the craftsmanship of the joinery, that gave this rural farmhouse a sense of quiet beauty.”

Real Wood Box Beams Jackel Enterprises manufactures real wood Box Beams. A Box Beam is a hollow timber produced to architectural specifications. Jackel primarily fabricates these beams from a character-grade Douglas Fir, but they can be made from any wood specie, including FSC material. Once installed, a Box Beam looks like a beautiful solid timber.

One of the more fascinating products that Jackel creates is hollow box beams. They are U-shaped wooden beams custom built to look like a traditional solid ceiling timber. Not only are they easier to install, they can also be used to wrap steel beams or ducts, or to hide wiring, plumbing or lighting. Custom built in a variety of woods, textures, and stain finishes, these box beams can be the perfect solution to a difficult construction problem. Regardless of the style or scope of the project, Jackel specializes in providing quality results. “We have high expectations of our suppliers, and we expect them to be met,” says Steve. Every shipment is inspected to make sure it meets their standards. “Because we have always had these high standards, our suppliers know to only send us material that will meet our expectations. We only work with certain mills that know the quality we expect and can provide it.” Natural wood enhances the beauty of any home. Jackel Enterprises’ top caliber materials and wide array of mill services can bring the outside into your home. Now that’s inner beauty. Jackel Enterprises’ 20,000 square foot warehouse and mill shop are located at 347 Locust Street in Watsonville. They can be reached at (800) 711-9663 or on the web at www.jackelenterprises.com. THM

Jackel’s Box Beams are available in a variety of textures and finishes. Jackel manufactures Box Beams as long as 50 feet and as large as 30”x 30”. Box Beams are suitable for residential, corporate, or commercial applications. Whether you are an architect, designer, developer, builder, or homeowner, a Jackel Box Beam can be the perfect solution for your timber requirements.

A well-planned home office lightens the workload. BY

XU BEI SHI

OR MANY HOMEOWNERS, CREATING A HOME OFFICE MEANS TURNING a spare bedroom into space that serves as a guest room and an office. It can be a tough task but it’s one that the folks at Valet Organizers can turn into a pleasant experience. Since 1987, the firm headquartered in Campbell, has been talking customers through the process to make sure every detail is exactly right. “A lot of people come to us with a plan or an idea,” says Larry Fox, the president and owner who urges customers to come into one of the company’s four showrooms to see sample home offices. “We meet with them for an interview” as one of the staff designers assesses work needs and styles. They ask questions such as “Do you want the printer on top or hidden behind a cabinet on a roll out shelf?”, “What are your filing needs?”, and “How many people will use the office?” before making choices about styles and colors. The next step is a meeting in the client’s home to work with a computerized drawing. The client and designer can edit and change the drawing until they settle on a final plan which can include work stations, built-in bookcases, file cabinets, pull out desks, and even a wall bed that transforms the space into a guest room. Or the entire office may be set into what was once a reach-in closet in the guest room with a cozy desk and decorative upper display cabinets with glass inset doors. Valet Organizers’ features also include task lighting, decorative Xenon puck lighting, and cabinet up-lighting to brighten the entire room. To ensure that electrical wiring can be easily run to components, each cabinet is built with a chase way to accommodate wiring and keep it neatly hidden from view.

Valet Organizers manufactures all the customized office components in their 20,000-square-foot Campbell woodshop. “In a home office, we use lots both laminates and solid wood,” says Fox. “The modern laminates are very popular as they are elegant and much more durable than wood. They work really well in a home office environment that take a significant amount of abuse.” Because they control every step of the process, once an order is placed it speeds along to completion, and in six to eight weeks is ready for installation that takes a day or two. If a client needs help settling in, Valet Organizers maintains a roster of professional organizers who can further fine-tune the workspace. The result, a well-designed, comfortable home office “is a huge benefit for resale,” says Fox. “It will be functional for somebody else. It’s a quality investment, one that people can use for years.” For more information on Valet Organizers, go to www.valetorganizeres.com and visit their showrooms: Campbell Showroom & Manufacturing; 1190 Dell Avenue, Suite J (408) 370-1041; Mon – Fri 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Sat 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Los Altos Showroom; 359 State Street (650) 941-7761; Mon – Sat 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Burlingame Showroom; 247 California Drive (650) 344-0729; Hours: Mon – Sat 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM Danville Showroom; 602 Sycamore Valley Road West (in the Danville Livery) (925) 362-8838; Hours: Tues – Sat 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Bathroom Oasis STREAMLINED, FRAMELESS SHOWER ENCLOSURE MAKES AN elegant statement in any bathroom, giving it the feel of an oasis where occupants can relax and refresh. The search for a stylish and durable frameless (or framed) shower enclosure—whether it’s for a home under construction or the remodel of an existing bathroom—begins at Empire Shower Doors. The Petaluma-based company, which has been in business for more than 17 years, offers complete services for all phases of a project, from the initial conception of a shower door to the final touches.

A

Design At the initial consultation, a representative from Empire Shower Doors brings glass and hardware samples right to the homeowner, along with a portfolio of photos. Customers can also visit the company’s showroom to examine the wide variety of hardware finishes and glass options, and view full-size examples of shower enclosures. Options for decorative hardware are available in a variety of finishes, from brass to pewter. In a new home, the consultation can take place before the walls have been erected or during building, including after the tiles have been installed.

Fabrication

SAYLOR DOPPENBERG

Once the homeowner has chosen the materials and precise measurements have been taken, Empire Shower Doors begins building the enclosure with the customer’s selected glass and hardware. Most fabrications can be ready for installation within two weeks. As a member of the American Glass Association (AGA), Empire Shower Doors’ safety standards adhere to the strictest of guidelines, and only the safest standards are used in each project. Company Vice President Jason German explains that the AGA’s high standards typically exceed county codes for glass safety.

Installation Although some homeowners choose to do the installation themselves, it’s usually more cost-effective for the Empire Shower Doors expert installers to handle the job. These professionals have received extensive training in shower enclosure installations and thoroughly understand the products and materials. Empire Shower Doors prides itself on the fact it deals exclusively in shower enclosures, making it one of the top companies of its kind in the Bay Area. By concentrating on one piece of home improvement puzzle, Empire Shower Doors can maintain superior quality control and ensure high standards for its customers. Kitchen Versatility BY

TONI DEWAAL, NCIDQ, CGBP

S KITCHENS HAVE BECOME THE CENTER OF THE HOME AND we have moved to a less formal style of living, the kitchen must function better and serve more variable tasks. For example, a typical evening shared with guests might include everyone gathering in the kitchen to start off with appetizers and cocktails. Several people may take part in the cooking and preparation of various dishes. This would likely be followed by dessert and coffee. A kitchen designer will create a space based on an understanding of how and by whom it is used. To accommodate numerous tasks and multiple cooks, designers have been incorporating separate task-centered areas to prevent overcrowding the kitchen where everyone loves to gather. Some people may want more focus on beverage or wine service with an area to display a collection of wine glasses. They may select an under-counter wine refrigerator, sink, icemaker, and storage for various barware items. Others may want this space to serve as a secondary prepare, a coffee, beverage, and dessert center, and an additional clean up area. In this instance, the designer will ensure there is enough counter space for food preparation as well as banquet or staging space, possibly adding a sink

with disposal and an additional dishwasher such as a dish drawer for light clean up. A baking center with a lower countertop and close proximity to ovens is another good example. Many homeowners wish to incorporate a command center or TV in this area. Room for a computer, phone, various types of connections, and filing drawers may be required here. This type of a set up can act as an additional serving area when needed for large crowds. Lighting for these areas is equally important. Designers will work to address task lighting, and may elect to spotlight collections of art, stemware, an architectural element, or an area for food or flowers. How many people will use the area at a time, typical activities in the kitchen, as well as proximity to passageways and seating arrangements will drive the overall layout and distance between such secondary serving or prep areas and adjacent areas. Another consideration is specific types of small appliances that will be used in this area. For example, an extra tall coffee carafe, or a very large mixer may require upper cabinets to be higher off the countertop than normal. Secondary serving and preparation areas can greatly enhance a kitchen. Working with a professional designer can help you achieve the best layout and results for your lifestyle. Does Color Have a Function? BY

ZARA STENDER, CID, IDS, CMG

VERYTHING IN YOUR HOME HAS A PURPOSE, from the appliances, to the carpet, to the rooms designated for sleeping, eating, and watching TV. You made your choices based on the features you wanted and the benefits you felt you would receive. Choose color in the same fashion. Select paint color last, if possible. It’s the one element that has complete flexibility. In a colorful room with several patterns, choose a calm neutral color. It’s fine and even fabulous to have one accent wall in a rich hue. Be careful when working with many patterns and colors in one room. You want them to sing together, not scream in discord. Do consider the purpose of the room before deciding on a palette. For instance, for a room that will be used for a lot of entertaining, avoid any palette featuring a predominance of yellow and black. Research has shown that people will avoid such spaces. In nature this color combination is a warning to stay away—and people will subconsciously avoid the room. Instead choose a palette that is warm and friendly, featuring orange, terra cotta, peach, coral, bronze or copper. Color can bridge the gap between antiques [or reproductions] you treasure and the contemporary style of your residence. Color can tie all the elements together seamlessly and make a fabulous space out of a hodgepodge of mixed styles. Choose paint that offers more complex formulations. [Ask at the dealer about the formula.] As a color specialist, I custom blend product so that all colors in the room are present in the paint. All hues then are welcomed into the room and none stand apart as “not quite right.” Paint companies such as Sherwin-Williams offer products with formulations that are already rich and complex. All finishes and furnishings in a room influence each other in the color and luminosity they reflect or absorb. The perfect paint color can balance all of this interplay of color and light into a visually pleasing space.
