Public art is a placemaker for neighbourhoods
A
cross the GTA public art is enhancing buildings and communities and making them more attractive and inviting to residents, visitors and passersby. The art can take many forms such as large playful or modern sculptures, intricate lighting installations, coloured
and etched glass embedded into the fabric of buildings or even patterns and words integrated into pavement. Some pieces of public art are not only decorative but also functional and provide illumination or a place to sit. Many pieces of public art help create a sense of place and some give a nod to the history of their location.

Bryan Tuckey President of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD)
Much of the public art in the region was created through collaborations of land developers, municipalities and artists. In the City of Toronto, public art is funded as part of a new development. Through its Percent for Public Art policy, the City requires developers to spend one percent of the overall construction value of their new developments to create public art. There are more than 200 public art installations that have come as a result of the public art policy. Famous Canadian novelist and artist Douglas Coupland has created a number of them. He has worked with the development industry to create pieces like Canoe Landing Park’s large red canoe and the colourful fishing bobbers that anchor Concord Adex Development’s CityPlace neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. The park is enjoyed by residents and employees in the surrounding buildings as well as visitors who come to experience interactive art. In this case in particular, the public art has also created and reinforced a sense of community in a newly-developed area where there wasn’t a permanent community before. Coupland also created the soldier sculpture entitled Monument to the War of 1812 at Fleet and Bathurst Streets, which was commissioned by BILD member Malibu Investments. Outside the city, municipalities like Markham and Mississauga have policies and programs that encourage developers to include public art in their development plans but they are not mandatory. In Mississauga, one BILD member embraced the idea and voluntarily commissioned a work of art that is now establishing a sense of place for a new neighbourhood. A sculpture by Canadian artist David James called Heaven and Earth was unveiled in July outside HOT Condominiums by Great Gulf. The landmark sculpture funded by the developer is located at the corner of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Eglinton Avenue West. Sitting at the gateway to the new community, this sculpture is topped with a mirrored sphere can be enjoyed by residents, visitors and anyone who travels through that major intersection. Bryan Tuckey is President and CEO of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) and is a land-use planner who has worked for municipal, regional and provincial governments. He can be found on Twitter (twitter. com/bildgta), Facebook (facebook.com/ bildgta) and BILD’s official online blog (bildblogs.ca).

MILESTONE CELEBRATION HELD AT FRIDAY HARBOUR RESORT
O
n Saturday, September 12, a Milestone Celebration at the $1.5 billion Friday Harbour Resort (www.fridayharbourresort.com) in Innisfil marked the completion of one of Canada’s largest inland marinas. Representatives from the Friday Harbour partnership ConDrain Group, Geranium Corporation, Optus Capital and Pemberton Group welcomed more than 3000 guests, including many of the 450 families who have purchased residences in Ontario’s allseason playground. Barrie MPP Ann Hoggarth; York-Simcoe MPP Julia Munro; Simcoe County Warden Gerry Marshall; Mayor of Innisfil Gord Wauchope; Deputy Mayor of Barrie Mike McCann and York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson were on hand for the Official Flag-Raising Ceremony. construction of the marina is an engineering milestone. Approximately 170,000 truckloads of earth have been moved within the 600-acre site to sculpt The Nest, the 18-hole championship golf course now under construction. Friday Harbour Marina is nearly filled with water and will provide 4.5 kilometres of newly created waterfront and berths for up to a thousand boats. In his remarks, Mayor Wauchope said “Thank you to Friday Harbour partners for believing that Innisfil was the place for this magnificent resort, which has already provided tremendous economic benefits to our town.” Benefits will include approximately 1,000 permanent jobs on the resort and 1,500 off-site upon completion, along with almost 8,000 person years in employment during construction. A third of Friday Harbour Resort is designated a nature preserve that will be home to a multitude of wildlife, and a 7-kilometre network of groomed trails will course through woodland, wetlands and meadows. for the endangered butternut tree species, established and approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Addressing Lake Simcoe’s water quality in an integrated watershed management and stewardship program has been a key focus of the 13-year planning process. A cuttingedge pilot project testing multiple wastewater treatment technologies to find a solution that would demonstrate ultra-low phosphorous limits was led by the Corporation’s Senior VicePresident Shauna Dudding in partnership with the Town of Innisfil and the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority (LSRCA). Since the opening of Friday Harbour Resort’s Vaughan-based sales centre in May 2014, sales have been brisk. In addition to the milestone completion of the 1,000-slip marina nestled inland from Lake Simcoe (Ontario’s fourthlargestlake),progressonthecommunityincludes accelerating the release of more residential phases for sale, and the start of construction on the first condominium buildings. Residents and guests of this world-class resort

will enjoy a multitude of activities throughout the year only 45 minutes from the Greater Toronto Area, which is accessible by GO Train. Along the marina’s edge, a 4.5-kilometre boardwalk will feature 40 shopfronts housing restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, festivals and a farmers’ market. Residents will also have membership in a large Lake Club, overlooking the water. Buyers can select from four condominium styles. In fact, the ratings out of 100 were all in the 90s for services including fire services, recreation/fitness programs, parks/open space and arts/culture. Making major news in the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct, the City is beginning construction on the roads and sewers that will service the future Mackenzie Vaughan Hospital at Major Mackenzie Drive and Jane Street. From signing the ground lease to the request for proposals, the new hospital project is really taking shape ... This hospital is a vital part of our future and our ultimate goal of taking Vaughan to a higher level and

R
ecently, Wycliffe Homes and Thornridge homes marked the Grand Opening of The Virtuoso Collection of residences on 40’ lots at The Enclave, Crown Jewel of Sharon Village. These prestigious builders are excited to add new choices to the residential mix at this highly successful community. “These luxurious homes have two-car garages, and we are offering bungalows, bungalows with lofts, and up to five-bedroom two-storey homes,” says Jared Bensky, Wycliffe’s VP Development. “And once again, purchasers can choose from both traditional and modern elevations. We are also offering
made-to-measure features. With many of the lots backing onto green space and several featuring wider frontages and walkouts, we know these homes will go quickly.” Talk about the perfect setting! The area is building up quickly as potential homeowners realize they can enjoy small-town living close to a wealth of amenities for reasonable prices. Located on the northwest corner of Leslie Street and Mount Albert Road, The Enclave Crown Jewel of Sharon Village is perched at the top of the new development area in Sharon, in the midst of a natural heritage system and future trail system. The Enclave is also just minutes to Green Lane, Davis
Drive, GO Transit and the Highway 404 extension to Keswick (making this location even more desirable). The historic Sharon Temple is moments away, and new schools and a sporting complex are close by. Prices for the homes on 40’ lots begin from the low-$700,000s. Ask a sales representative about the remaining semis in the community. Be sure to tour the two model homes. Visit the sales centre at 19235 Leslie Street in Sharon on the northwest corner of Mt. Albert Road and Leslie Street. For hours and more information, call 905 605-5900 or visit MySharonVillage.com.

WOODBRIDGE FAIR PROMISES FUN FOR ALL! By DOROthEA hELMS
A
h, fall! I love this time of year, when there is a bracing chill in the morning air, the leaves turn vibrant colours, and towns across Ontario open the door to fun and festivities at annual fall fairs. If you live in Vaughan – and even if you don’t – get ready for the 2015 Woodbridge Fair to be held on October 10, 11 and 12. What a great way to spend some special family time during Thanksgiving weekend. “Come Home to the Fair” is the theme this year, and with 168 years behind it, this annual event is more inviting than ever before. From giant pumpkins to Scottish pipers, Doo Doo the International Clown and friend Jo Jo to birds of prey, the array of treats for the senses is amazing. Animals, big horses, miniature horses, music, food, activities, a midway, contests, entertainment, an FMX Extreme Motorcycle Show, The Woofjocks Canine All-Stars … phew! The phrase “something for everyone” takes on new meaning at this event.
October 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $8 per adult, $2 for students ages 6 to 14, free to children under 5. You can also purchase a Family Pass for $35 enabling entry for two adults and up to three children during all three days of the fair. Oh, and parking is free! A BIG THANK-YOU TO THE WOODBRIDGE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY FOR SHARING THESE PHOTOS FROM THE 2014 WOODBRIDGE FAIR!
The Woodbridge Fairgrounds address is 100 Porter Avenue (1 km north of Highway 7 on Kipling Avenue, just past the railway tracks). Fair hours are Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Monday,
