COMMUNITY PROFILE

SAVOUR SUMMERTIME IN YORK REGION

W

Enjoy adventure-based fun at the Recreational Outdoor Campus (ROC) in Georgina (Photo courtesy of the Town of Georgina)

Let’s start with the City of Markham, which is drawing international attention in the sporting world as one of the locations for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games. Water polo started earlier this month at the Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre, with table tennis and badminton to come. Situated in Markham Centre community, the sports venue has a triple gymnasium, an Olympic-size pool and 12.5-meter-high clear ceilings to meet international requirements for badminton and volleyball. If golf is your passion, Angus Glen Golf Club, one of the most beautiful and prestigious in Canada, will host the first-ever Pan Am Games golf tournament, which includes men’s and women’s events. This is prime bicycling season, and avid cyclists appreciate the opportunities in York Region, which include multi-use paths, YRT bike racks, numerous cycling clubs, and left-turn bike boxes at many intersections. You can even combine bicycling and bussing: York Region Transit Viva buses have bike racks, and your bike rider for free! Plus, plans are in the works for the “Lake to Lake Cycling Route and Walking Trail,” which will span 90 km in York Region (through Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Aurora, Richmond Hill and Markham) and 25 km in the City of Toronto. The route will consist of off-street, multi-use pathways and occasional on-street segments on low-speed roads. For a current interactive cycling map, visit York.ca/cycling. The outdoors also beckons from York Regional Forest, which consists of 2,300 hectares of protected land designated on 18 properties across the Region. More

Connects people and ideas, and can be reached at writer@wsws.ca

hen you live in York Region, the only problem with summer activities is choosing from the multitude of opportunities available! Traveling is fun, but if you’re thinking more of a stay-cation, there’s a lot of exciting stuff happening right in your own backyard.

than 120 km of trails wind through these areas, all available free to the public. “Nature’s Classroom” is an outdoor education program provided to groups and organizations. It is held in York Regional Forest, and sessions include a guided forest hike. To register, or for trail maps and more information, see York.ca. Do you have kids to keep busy this summer? Check your municipality for camps, workshops, swim times and more. You can also look into All Our Kids (AOK), which holds free drop-in programs in York Region where parents, grandparents and caregivers can have fun with children up to six years of age, interact with other parents and even learn from parenting workshops. Check York.ca for details. At the Kortright Centre for Conservation in Woodbridge, there are activities for all ages throughout the summer, culminating in the Honey Harvest Festival on

Luxury on Lake Simcoe Orchard Point Harbour brings upscale condo living to cottage country

A

s idyllic as the cottage lifestyle may seem, in reality it is often fraught with frustrations such as property upkeep, seasonal maintenance or access only by minimally maintained or seasonal roads. For this reason cottage country condominiums have

quickly become popular, offering all the pleasures of the lakeside lifestyle without the hassles. Orchard Point Harbour, located at the Narrows between Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching in Orillia, is a prime example of this growing trend. Poised on 500 ft. of pristine waterfront, Orchard Point Harbour seamlessly blends the traditional elements of cottaging; the natural setting, tranquility and relaxation, with the comforts and conveniences one would expect from an upscale urban residence. Such comforts include a fitness centre located at the water’s edge complete with a pool, hot tub, sauna and yoga studio as well as a rooftop terrace offering unparalleled views of Lake Simcoe, perfect for relaxing or entertaining. Boaters will appreciate the on-site Starport Marina, making it easy to explore Lake Simcoe, Lake Couchiching and the Trent-Severn Waterway. While Orchard Point Harbour’s location on a peninsula can make it feel like a private escape, the City of Orillia, with its charming boutiques, cafes, restaurants and medical facilities, is only minutes away by car or boat. Orillia’s surrounding area offers plenty of activities year-round, including numerous golf courses, ski resorts, walking trails and parks. And for those looking for a lively night out, Casino Rama is five minutes away. When completed, Orchard Point Harbour will consist of two Muskoka-inspired condo buildings. Phase 1 of the development is 98% occupied and Phase II, slated for occupancy in 2017, is currently on offer. One and two bedroom suites range in size from 800 to 2000-square-feet and start at the low-$300,000s. Each suite at Orchard Point Harbour combines luxury and ease with high quality features and finishes such as gourmet kitchens with granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, hardwood floors, and private terraces or balconies. For the ultimate in lakeside living, a limited selection of Penthouse and Lakeside suites are available that include upgraded features including premier kitchen cabinetry, 10foot ceilings, a gas fireplace and much more. This is the perfect place for those looking to downsize from a large home or who are searching for a relaxing retreat just a short, one-hour drive from the GTA. And for those who spend their winters abroad, owning a condominium at Orchard Point Harbour offers a worry-free lock-and-leave solution. Orchard Point Harbour is redefining the cottage lifestyle.
