Working together with our newly elected leaders

Building great cities is a common vision shared by all members of the Building Industry and Land Development Association. As partners in city building, our association’s objective is to work collaboratively with our leaders in government to build quality, complete communities in cities across the GTA. The recent election introduced our members and staff to a new team of municipal partners while welcoming back some familiar faces. On behalf of our 1,400 member companies, I would like to congratulate all the newly elected regional chairs, mayors and councilors. An election gives BILD representatives the opportunity to meet with Toronto and GTA candidates as we continue to advocate for new-home buyers across the region. The discussions revolved around important industry issues, and a sincere interest from the industry to build new homes that people can afford to purchase and revitalize existing neighbourhoods that residents can be proud to call home. We’ve spoken about housing choice, the economic importance of our industry, the significance of the OMB and policy objectives around intensification. We also discussed the costs of infrastructure, parkland, Section 37 and transit.

Our industry builds more than just homes. We build communities that include offices, malls, community centres, parks and more. Together with our partners in government, we have been implementing the objectives of the provincial growth plan by intensifying urban centres and areas along transit corridors. Our efforts have resulted in a shift in housing type, with more than 60 per cent of new homes now built in the City of Toronto. More than 90 per cent of these homes are new, modern, award-winning condominiums that offer an affordable choice for first-time home buyers and renters alike. Ontario’s capital has been the high-rise capital of North America for quite some time now, even outpacing Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. Whether you are walking down the street in Toronto, cycling up the road in Vaughan or having brunch in a trendy new café in Mississauga, there is a very good chance that a member of our association has played a role in bringing that community to life. Projects like the revitalization of Regent Park by the Daniels Corporations has brought new life to an ageing neighbourhood. Head south and you will find the Canary District – future home of 10,000 athletes from 41 countries

at the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games before becoming a complete community for more than 2,000 GTA residents. Just north of the city you’ll find World On Yonge, which is a perfect example of a complete community with office towers, condominiums, a hotel and retail space which includes a 40,000 square foot grocery store. Our members are experts in implementation but we need help from our municipal leaders. We are partners in city building, but we need the tools to make it happen. I am especially pleased to inform you that BILD chair Steve Upton was named to mayor-elect John Tory’s transition team this week. This is a great step toward working collaboratively with our government partners over the next four years. With many new Mayors and Councillors, we are enthusiastic about forging new relationships, and building on existing ones as we continue to share our collective vision for creating complete communities throughout the Greater GTA . Do you know about YorkScene.com? The official website of York Region Tourism Partners is a great way to find out what there’s to do in the Region throughout the year. The site has seven sections: Things to Do, Events, Dining/Nightlife, Where to Stay, Find It, Special Offers and Community. Designed for visitors to York, it is also a fabulous resource for residents who would like to experience more of what their surroundings have to offer. “Things to Do” focuses on arts and entertainment, kids programs, nightlife, tours and attractions, shopping, wineries and breweries, food and drink, sports and leisure, and even the top popular activities. For example, how about touring a local winery or strolling through the Pacific Mall in Markham, Canada’s largest Chinese mall? “Events” spans the gamut from live theatre performances to sports competitions, festivals and fairs, historical celebrations and more. If dining out is on the menu, you can find bars, pubs, grills, cafés, family dining and fine dining options on this site.

You may live in York Region, but if not, the site has a handy section on accommodations for friends and family from out of town. Camp grounds, RV Parks, hotels, motels, motor inns and resorts dot the region to welcome visitors. The “Find It” section is fascinating. I went on there today and had easy access to a map of York Region, information on trails, a cycling map, farm fresh info and the YorkScene Discovery Guide – a booklet of events happening in York Region’s nine municipalities. There is even a link to what’s going on in and around historic Kleinburg. “Special Offers” covers York Region travel packages and the opportunity to win prizes through the Great York Region Entertainment Giveaway 2014. And last, but not by any means least, the “Community” section is a showcase for residents to post photos and write-ups (many from children), blogs, videos and a place where people can have their say about anything and everything! This website is phenomenal. Looking for

free things to do? You’ll find ‘em. With the holidays quickly approaching, festive events information will also be posted here. Plus, you can get to know York Region through a video series. Among those you can watch are films on the Markham Fair, 30 Ghosts Documentary, Feast of Fields, Markham Jazz Festival, Fishing in York Region … honestly, the choices are fantastic. The home page has a “This Week in York Region” and “Upcoming Events” segments, so you can zero in on fun activities quickly. To help you in your search, York Region.ca has a “Things to do in York Region” section that links to YorkScene. The YorkScene tagline is: Eat, Play, Stay Local. When you live in York Region, there’s no excuse for being bored. Whatever your age, physical abilities, interests and budget, you can certainly find something to do.
