O

n Saturday, July 1, the sights and sounds of celebration will ring out across York Region, as residents and visitors mark Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation with an array of activities. Check out what’s happening in our nine municipalities – and get ready to party! Here is some information on Canada Day celebrations across the Region. Visit the websites for details.

Town of Aurora (Aurora.ca)

BEGINNINGS: In 1804, settler Jabez Warren received a contract from the Holland Land Company for 1,443 acres and made it his family’s home. Thus began the area known as the Town Of Aurora, which was founded in 1818. During the U.S. Civil War, Aurora played a key role in the Abolitionist Movement and the Underground Railroad. CELEBRATE: In Aurora, July 1st activities run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. They include a parade along Yonge, plus familyoriented activities, live entertainment, a car show, Aurora’s Teen Idol, fireworks and more at Lambert Willson Park.

Township of King (King.ca)

BEGINNINGS: In the 1600s, the Township of King included an important portage route between Lakes Ontario and Simcoe. The area was named the Township of King in 1794 for John King, the British undersecretary of state at that time. European settlers soon moved in, many of them Quakers from Pennsylvania and United Empire Loyalists who sided with Britain during the War of Independence.

City of Markham (Markham.ca)

BEGINNINGS: Markham’s roots also go back to John Graves Simcoe, who named what became the Township of Markham for his friend William Markham, the Archbishop of York. Settler William Moll Berczy led 64 German families to the area, and they were joined by French Revolutionary Émigrés, United Empire Loyalists, Pennsylvania Germans and migrants from the British Isles. CELEBRATE: Festivities at Milne Dam Conservation Area will run from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. At 4:00 p.m., the popular People’s Parade will proceed from McCowan and Highway 7 to Milne Dam, where official ceremonies will take place. Town of Richmond Hill (RichmondHill.ca)

BEGINNINGS: Richmond Hill had its beginnings when John Graves Simcoe originally developed Yonge Street as a military road. It began as a small settlement located partly in both the Townships of Markham and Vaughan. Incorporated in 1872 as a Village, Richmond Hill quickly developed because of its proximity to Toronto. With the construction of large greenhouse operations, the Town became known as the “rose capitol” of Canada. CELEBRATE: Festivities will take place at the Richmond Green Sports Centre and Park from 11:00 a.m., culminating with York Region’s largest fireworks display at 10:00. Enjoy international food, entertainment, a beer garden, children’s village and more.

City of Vaughan (Vaughan.ca)

BEGINNINGS: In 1850, the Township of Vaughan was established with five elected councillors who could elect a reeve and one of more deputy reeves. Concession 6 at Vellore on Weston Road was the site of the first Township Hall, which still stands today. In 1882, Woodbridge became a Village, and in 1971, the Township of Vaughan became the Town of Vaughan, with Woodbridge incorporated into it. CELEBRATE: Vaughan’s award-winning annual Canada Day event will take place from noon to 10:00 p.m. at Boyd Conservation Area. Enjoy activities and entertainment for the entire family, including midway rides & inflatables, a cultural food zone, laser show and more!

Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville (TownofWS.ca)

Town of Georgina (Georgina.ca)

BEGINNINGS: In 1790, Lieutenant-Governor Simcoe named the land in the east part of what is now Georgina “North Gwillimbury” after his wife’s maiden name, Gwillim. The area was surveyed in 1817, and land grants went to retired military officers, war veterans, wealthy merchants and aristocratic families. In 1986, the Townships of North Gwillimbury and Georgina were amalgamated to create the Town of Georgina. CELEBRATE: Starting at 2:00 p.m. on July 1st, at the Recreation Outdoor Campus, festivities will continue through to a fabulous fireworks display at 10:00 p.m. Enjoy great food, inflatables and fun for all ages.

Canada Day is the perfect time to honour our country and the families who make if so special (Photo courtesy of the Town of Richmond Hill)

BEGINNINGS: In 1787, the British crown purchased the western portion of Whitchurch and Markham Townships from the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation. In 1792, Whitchurch Township was named in honour of Whitchurch, England. The hamlet of Stouffville was incorporated as a village in 1877. In 1971, the Township and Village were merged to create the Town of Whitchurch–Stouffville. CELEBRATE: During the Town’s Strawberry Festival and Canada Day weekend, visit the Festival Market. hether you’re looking for a home in Toronto, where the average price is now over $900,000 - with monthly mortgage costs of $3-4,000 not uncommon; or in other major urban centres across the province where prices keep going up dramatically, the reality is that a growing number of Ontario families simply can’t afford to own a home.

“It’s the opportunity to own your own home and not likely have to pay any more than what you would be paying if you were renting… maybe even less.”

Enter Trillium Housing, which is tackling the problem head on, working with developers in communities such as Toronto and Hamilton to build homes at a price point the average family can afford. For example the company’s first project in the GTA, known as the LOOP Urban Towns, start in the 300s, which represents a much lower barrier of entry into the housing market as well as greatly reduced minimum down payment costs. The company is also offering a shared risk Trillium Mortgage to complement the purchaser’s bank mortgage for those who qualify, helping to significantly reduce monthly carrying costs. The way this works is if a family puts $20k down along with a $180k bank mortgage and a $100k Trillium Mortgage to purchase a $300k home, they only have to make monthly payments on the $180k mortgage until they decide to sell the home. The fact there’s no need to make any payments on the $100k Trillium Mortgage portion alone translates into reduced monthly payments of $4-500 and thousands of dollars less per year, based on current mortgage rates. So over a five year period, the family could end up spending $20-30k less on mortgage payments.

When the time comes to sell the home, if it has gone up in value by a specific percentage, the original Trillium loan amount is paid off, along with its corresponding percentage increase. And because it’s a shared risk loan, if the home were to go down in value, the Trillium Loan would share in the risk with a lower payout than the original loan amount. In fact, the Trillium Mortgage would incur more of a downside reduction than if based on the shared formula. As well, in the spirit of attracting homeowners as opposed to speculative investors, Trillium Mortgages have anti-flipping penalties to serve as a strong disincentive to sell Trillium financed homes for a quick profit. “What we’re offering is the kind of creative solution the GTA market has been lacking far too long,” observes Trillium Housing partner Joe Deschênes Smith. “It’s the opportunity to own your own home and not likely have to pay any more than what you would be paying if you were renting… maybe even less.” To learn more about Trillium Housing, go to www.trilliumhousing.ca and for the LOOP register at: www.thelooptowns.com.
