news from BILD

Work together to raise funds for habitat

E

very year, members of the building, development and professional renovation industry donate many thousands of dollars and countless hours supporting various charitable causes across the region.

that builds affordable homes for low-income families. BILD has been a community partner of Habitat since 2003, and the relationship has strengthened with every passing year. It’s a perfect fit since we’re both in the business of building homes.

One such cause is Habitat for Humanity GTA, the local arm of the well-known charity

BILD members support Habitat through a series of fundraising events which raise

Bryan Tuckey President of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD)

several thousand dollars each year. These fundraisers range from industry gatherings to athletic tournaments, and all the proceeds help Habitat build homes for its partner families. Hundreds of members participated in this year’s events, which included baseball and volleyball tournaments, two golf tournaments and a city-wide scavenger hunt. A cycling event will take place later this year. Our biggest Habitat fundraising event was our annual BBQ In July. More than 600 people attended the social gathering to network while raising money for Habitat. Fundraising was done through ticket sales and a silent auction. All of these events happen because of member volunteers who spend hours calling sponsors, planning activities, creating promotional materials and more. Their support is a big part of why our partnership with Habitat has been so successful, and it’s a testament to their commitment to giving back. Another way our industry supports Habitat is by volunteering on job sites and helping to actually build homes. Every year our members roll up their sleeves

and work on one of Habitat’s construction sites. Volunteers range from professional contractors to office workers with no construction experience. This year our group spent a very hot August day putting in insulation, framing, placing vapour barriers and installing casement windows in homes under construction on Habitat’s Birchmount Road site. What made the experience extra special for the volunteers was knowing that in just a few months, nine families will call the community home. Lots our members also hold their own Habitat build days, and we often hear of volunteers return to a building site two or three more times. Other ways in which members support Habitat include hosting their own fundraisers, donating furniture or building materials to the ReStore, and providing expertise to the organization itself. Bryan Tuckey is President and CEO of the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) and is a land-use planner who has worked for municipal, regional and provincial governments. He can be found on Twitter (twitter.com/bildgta), Facebook (facebook.com/bildgta) and BILD’s official online blog (bildblogs.ca).

BOB FINNIGAN TAKES ON LEADERSHIP ROLE AS NEW PRESIDENT OF CHBA

B

ob possesses the knowledge, experience and proven leadership skills to bring a fresh outlook to CHBA. To quote him “This is an exciting time with numerous opportunities for industry advancement. The ever-changing market demographics and planning challenges not only in Toronto and Vancouver, but across the country, require constant and consistent participation from all three levels of the industry. Working together we can make a real difference. At CHBA, our major focus is on housing affordability and choice – and through innovation and technology, how we can provide Canadians with some of the best housing in the world while lessening the environmental impact of each new home.” In 2007, Bob served as President of the Greater Toronto Home Builders’ Association and spearheaded the rebranding of the organization as “BILD.” In 2011, he became President of the Ontario Home Builders’ Association, and from 2011 to 2016 was a Tarion Warranty Corporation Board Member. A sought-after speaker, Bob has served on the Ryerson Real Estate Advisory Council, and has interacted with all three levels of government. A principal and partner of Heathwood and Herity for three decades, Bob is the COO Acquisitions and Housing. He is a true visionary of the development potential that each location has to offer and his interest in

construction innovation and new technology always enhances each product we develop. As a director of our Mikey Network, a charity formed in 2003 to place public-access defibrillators called MIKEYs (in honour of our partner Mike Salem) in high-risk locations, Bob has played a critical role in the Network’s growth from a small organization to one that has placed over 2,000 MIKEYs and has helped save 32 lives. Congratulations, Bob! We are thrilled for the partner you are and for the ongoing care and love you have for this industry.
