From The Publisher Welcome to 2012! A new year with endless possibilities and amazing opportunities! 2011 was a great year for me—so much accomplished, so much completed! I made some changes and tweaks along the way. And in reviewing the year as I set my goals for 2012, I realize I’ve done more then I thought! I have become totally clear and focused—and it feels amazing! I am in my expertise—the publisher of 2 magazines. I can write, publish, sell and teach others how to do the same! In fact, I’ve given my Publish My Magazine program a facelift and it has all the tools you need to launch your own newsletter or magazine—whether it’s your only business or an “add-on” to your current existing business. Have you reviewed 2011? Take paper and pencil, review the year. How far did you come? Where do you still want to go? What is still unclear? That gives you a place to begin for 2012. Then, once you know what you want to do—what products, programs or services you are going to offer, it’s time to get the BIG wall calendar! I put everything for my business on it. Magazine deadlines, events, teleclasses, product launches. This way you can really see at a glance that you aren’t doing too much all at once. After you have the big things on the calendar, it’s time to break it down into smaller chunks. Back into the launch of your product or program. For example, I know the dates of my 2012 events. I then need to back into when I need final numbers, and that gives me a date where I need to finalize ticket sales, which helps me figure out when I want to open ticket sales and what I need to do to market them. This includes scheduling solo email blasts, postcard mailings, advertisements, etc. Having it this detailed out in the beginning of the year allows you to be able to know what you need to accomplish each month and each week to reach your goals—so when you sit down at your computer in the morning, you know exactly what you are doing! Using the type of planning strategy the last few years has allowed me to actually do more—and do it more efficiently. And that allows me more time to play! This year also needs to be one of building relationships—IN PERSON! Get out from behind your computer! Commit to attending at least 1 or 2 live events out of your city each year, commit to attending 1 local event at least once a month. Sitting at your computer sending emails and posting on Facebook is NOT going to make a successful business. I’d love to hear your tips—what do you do for goal planning? Do you plan to attend events this year? What is your target—how many people do you want to meet? I look forward to connecting with you online and off! Thanks for reading! To your SUCCESS in 2012!

All About Food

Good Luck Gumbo By Nancy Newcomer Happy New Year! With the holidays behind us, it is time to welcome in 2012 with good health and a positive attitude. It's a time for optimism, a fresh start, and new beginnings. Here's a yummy recipe that is healthy, yet hearty enough to satisfy during the cold winter months. This was made the “cheater’s way” with canned beans & tomatoes for a quick New Years meal. Please swap for fresh beans and tomatoes when you have more time. Either way, it's a winner! PS--check out the History Lesson below!

Good Luck Gumbo • • • • • • • • • •

1 Tbsp. olive oil 4 (15 oz) cans black-eyed peas with liquid 1 medium onion, chopped 1 (10 oz) can diced tomatoes and green chilies 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes 5 stalks celery, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 cups chicken broth 1 cup brown rice

Directions: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat, and cook the onion, pepper and celery until tender. Pour in the chicken broth, and mix in rice, black-eyed peas with liquid, diced tomatoes and green chiles, diced tomatoes, and garlic. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer uncovered 45 minutes, or until rice is tender. Add water if soup is too thick.

History Lesson: Did you have your black-eyed peas and collards as a traditional New Year’s Day meal? The practice of eating black-eyed peas for luck generally is believed to date back to the Civil War. At first planted as food for livestock, and later a food staple for slaves in the South, the fields of black-eyed peas were ignored as Sherman’s troops destroyed or stole other crops, thereby giving the humble, but nourishing, blackeyed pea an important role as a major food source for surviving Confederates.)

Longtime Santa Barbara radio personality, Nancy Newcomer is a food blogger and an accomplished cook & creator of simple, healthy meals made from fresh, organic ingredients. With an emphasis on gluten free fare and local farmer’s market bounty, her Facebook food blog, “Back to the Kitchen: Healthy Living with Real Food” is followed by people in over 22 countries. Check out Nancy’s new website, www.NancyNewcomer.com where she shares recipes & shopping tips and continues to advocate cooking “real food “ recipes and having sit down family dinners.

All About Social Media The NEW Facebook Timeline: Personal Branding Secret Strategy and How it Connects You to Your Market By Marla Dennis

I

’m thrilled about the new Timeline on Facebook for one main reason: personal branding power! The new timeline focuses on our life story, which is exactly the effective strategy behind personal branding for today’s social media marketing. You are defining your persona, personal story, and reliability to your market. You are aspiring to build the know, like, & trust factor with your audience via transparency and authenticity in your own story and compelling content. (The word “audience” is synonymous with Facebook friends and fans, Twitter followers, LI group members, etc.) This style of branding provides an emotional resonance and connection to your audience (market). You aspire to craft an emotionally compelling personal brand that will authentically connect you to your online communities using the keys of transparency that turn you into a client ATTRACTIVE brand that leads to conversion of revenues. You are converting the rich humanity of your life into a story - as your brand – (written and video). People connect to stories. They are humanizing. People relate to brands through stories. Here are 3 ways to make your posts compelling and true to your brand: 1. Talk with your audience not at them. In many of your posts, ask questions. Instead of posting “check this out...” write content that will enhance their personal life, give them an innovative idea for their business or inspire to move forward. In other words weave your personality into the posting as if you are talking, pose a question and give them a reason to engage. 2. Know your market’s challenges and address them. For example: “Frustrated with how to write compelling copy for your promotions? MANY do. I come across this all the time in my coaching and I feel for you. Here's some very basic tips to remind us of how to be more savvy in our writing...http://bit.ly/vtJuxR” 3. Post a “call to action” for a non-profit. A compassionate entrepreneur will always inspire engagement and develop relationships. Example: What a blessing to be able to give (Continued on page 11)

back to women entrepreneurs in underserved countries via joinfite.org. I just funded a microloan for a woman in Boliva. Law of circulation continues!” Final words: When you make your posts more about your audience and what they need rather than selling, you will develop a richer and deeper relationship with your community. You will sell more as a byproduct of that relationship. As a personal branding and social media savvy expert, Marla inspires and awakens imagination and possibility thinking. She guides positive-minded, highly-motivated, results-oriented, adventurous, heart-centered entrepreneurs and Dentists how to clearly communicate an authentic personal brand that builds quality online communities for higher revenues supported by Universal law principles. She mentors you how to be more conscious in your intentions and smarter with your time & strategies aligned with the Law of Increase for all. With a 22 year career as an entertainment publicist, coaching entrepreneurs how to define and deliver their personal brand on Social Media platforms made practical sense. All About Marketing STOP THE MARKETING MADNESS! 7 Essentials for Complete Marketing Success! Part 2 By Cathy Alessandra Last issue we covered essential #1, your website and online presence; and essential #2, email and direct mail marketing. Now we move on to essential #3, print advertising and essential #4, social media. Whether it’s in a national magazine like Today’s Innovative Woman, a community publication or a niched newsletter targeted to your ideal target client, print is thriving…IF you use it in the right places. Essential #3 is all about the effective use of print advertising. It may surprise you to know that 92% of adults read magazines and that magazine readership has grown over the past 5 years. The average reader spends 43 minutes reading each issue. More importantly to you, the ads in those magazines deliver more impressions then TV or the web in a ½ hour period! And they don’t pay to avoid ads as they do in other media (ie. recording your show on the DVR so you can skip the ads!) Plus when your potential client is reading that magazine, they are much less likely to engage in other media. Magazines rank #1 at influencing consumers to start a search online - higher then newer media options! I strongly believe the more niched the publication, the more targeted the reader is to what you have to offer! So when considering print in your marketing plan, look for local and or niched publications. Think about your business and whether a local community paper is what your ideal client is reading – or a niched magazine. What do they subscribe to? What are they reading - because that is where you want to be! I publish 2 very niched magazines – kids and womenpreneurs. My kids magazine is a local community based publication. If you are the mother of a child living in the South Bay area of Los Angeles with kids ages birth-12, you are going to pick it up. And if you have a product or service or program targeted to kids that age living in the South Bay, you know you need to advertise in it, write for it and participate in some form. If you are a woman business owner, you know Today’s Innovative Woman magazine is something you must read with all it's tips, tools and resources. It is specifically for that target market. If you are a business that serves women entrepreneurs, you see that savvy women business owners looking for tools and resources are reading this and you need to advertise in it or write for it! Business essential #4 is the effective use of social media. Social media is here to stay and you need to jump in and play - using a strategy! The word strategy is the key here! My kids tease me about posting pictures or tweeting something—but most (Continued on page 31)

All About SUCCESS Kendall Summerhawk— a leader for women

B

eloved by women business owners world-wide for her inspiring and practical business building strategies, Kendall SummerHawk is a leader in the women entrepreneurs success movement. Kendall was honored by winning the 2011 Stevie® Award for Women Helping Women, and named one of 2010′s Enterprising Women of the Year by Enterprising Women Magazine for her work empowering women to live their Soul’s Divine Purpose via a thriving business. But she’ll be the first to point out, “While it now looks like I have it all figured out, it hasn’t always been this way!” “I wanted to be an entrepreneur ever since I was a little girl, watching my mom run her successful hairdressing business. She always told me to work for myself, so that I could be independent and take control of my future. At twelve, I started selling flowers on the street corner. After just two days, my mom put a stop to it.” That same year, Kendall wrote her first business plan, on notebook paper and with pencil. “I was horse-crazy so I outlined a horse training business. It’s so cute when I look back on the experience! I gave the plan to a relative, sure that he would see the same opportunity I did. He didn’t, and laughing, he threw it away.” “Later, at seventeen, I built a massage table and started lining up clients at $25 per rub. While a great way to make money in high school I couldn’t see making a career of it.” Despite her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur, Kendall spent several frustrating years waiting tables, barely making $25 per day. Finally, she found her groove and began working for a variety of start-up companies. She learned a ton about starting a business, running teams and making sales but 80 hour work weeks for little pay were the norm. Fed up, she quit to start her own business. It wasn’t easy and Kendall is the first to admit, “I cried more in the first couple of years in business than in my entire life!” “Running my business was difficult until I discovered a critical secret that I now teach all of my clients: that it’s easier to make more money than it is to make less.” (Continued on page 20)

All About Business Creative Thinking: How It Can Help Your Business By Linda Cotter

W

hat is creative thinking? The official definition is “A way of looking at problems or situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions.” I believe that creative thinking adds value to everything. It gives you a limitless reservoir of ideas that you can draw upon. No matter what you are currently capable of, creativity can enhance your abilities and allow you to see new solutions to problems. Whether you are creating something new and fresh or just doing old things in a new way it doesn’t matter. Creative and positive thinking can give you the means to move forward with your business vision. Brainstorming is probably the best known and certainly one of the most powerful creative thinking techniques. It is important to take time to brainstorm and free associate frequently. This will help you become clear about solutions and strategies for your business. Brainstorming is an idea generating technique whose main goal is to break us out of our old way of thinking and produce a whole new set of ideas from which we can choose. It is useful for attacking specific problems and gives us a collection of fresh, new ideas. Here are 4 tips to think about while brainstorming: 1. Let yourself think freely. Freewheeling, wild, impossible and unthinkable ideas are what you are striving for. By allowing yourself to think outside the limitations of ordinary, normal thought, brilliant new solutions can come forth. 2. Suspend judgment. Write all ideas down and evaluate later. No critical comments allowed. 3. Add on to existing ideas. Improve, modify and build on existing ideas. 4. Collect loads of ideas. Concentrate on generating a sizeable list of ideas. The larger your list of possibilities, the more you will have to choose from, adapt, or combine. Don’t you find that when you meet someone who is smart and creative with their business that you just want to be around them and know how the heck they are do(Continued on page 30)

All About Money What Time is the “Right Time” to Re-enter the Market? Harnessing the Potential of Dollar-Cost Averaging By Elizabeth Bernay and Kara Noone

If one thing is certain about the economic environment over the past few years, it’s that markets fluctuate. Even experienced investors often find it impossible to accurately time a market—to “buy low and sell high.” In spite of this, however, many investors may be looking for a way to get back into the markets: to try and “time” their re-entry. A better strategy to consider may be dollar-cost averaging, which offers the discipline of a systematic investing schedule while potentially decreasing the average cost per share of the securities in which you’re investing. Dollar-cost averaging is a long-term investment strategy designed to avoid the pitfalls of timing the market by investing equal amounts of money at regular intervals (monthly, quarterly and so on) over a long period of time. The idea behind dollar-cost averaging is that an investor buys more shares when prices are lower, and fewer shares when prices are higher. Although the strategy doesn’t assure a profit or protect against a loss, over time the average cost per share an investor pays through dollar-cost averaging is typically lower than the average share price over the same period. In addition to the advantages of dollar cost averaging, systematic investing may also benefit you through the power of compounding. Regular monthly investments may grow—or compound— faster than one annual year-end investment to provide more asset growth over the long term. In conclusion, dollar-cost averaging is one of the best ways to invest regularly, since you are investing a fixed amount on a fixed schedule regardless of how the markets perform. Investing regularly can also have intrinsic benefits: it encourages discipline and may also help ease the anxiety of daily market fluctuations. Note: Systematic investing cannot guarantee a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market or if you sell your shares when their value is less than the purchase

(Continued from page 14 All About Success—Kendall Summerhawk)

Kendall saw that most women entrepreneurs are working far too hard, for too little income, which is why she now focuses all of her best-selling coach certification training programs, live events and mentoring programs on one simple goal: to give women step-by-step training and mentoring on how to generate fabulous money, doing what they love, and in record time. Today, Kendall runs a multi-million dollar business, all from home, with her husband Richard as her business partner, and has coached more women to add 6 and multi 6-figures to their business than any other mentor she knows of. “Our clients are changing their perspective about money — from how much they believe they can make, to charging what they’re worth and getting it, to how much they are valuing themselves, and more —and for the first time, they’re feeling a surge of confidence, hope and renewal that yes, they can achieve freedom via a thriving, successful business.” “Our approach helps women entrepreneurs in all stages of their business development, from just getting started to more advanced, add leverage and multiple streams of income to their businesses.” And how does she make working with her husband look so easy? “We respect the gifts each of us brings to the business. And even though I confess I have a strong “Inner Control Goddess”, I let go of the temptation to micro-manage how Richard does his work. That alone keeps our business and our marriage harmonious!” Together, Richard and Kendall co-founded the award-winning International Association of Women in Business Coaching (the IAWBC) with the goal of transforming the dream of coaching into a financially and spiritually rich business. The IAWBC currently has over 650 members and thanks to focusing on giving women business owners certified coach training and done-for-you marketing tools, the IAWBC is fast becoming the premier coach training organization in the world. Which is why Kendall is now regarded as the leading voice on healing a woman’s relationship with money. “Women from all walks of life and at all income levels secretly struggle with valuing themselves. Women give away their power with money every day, and it breaks my heart because it’s preventing them from achieving their full potential.” Kendall spends time daily riding her Andalusian horses and loves to decorate her home. If you’ve ever seen Kendall, you’ve likely noticed her distinctive style that includes plenty of lace, velvet and, surprise! cowgirl boots. Kendall passionately believes that making fabulous money is part of your spiritual path. To learn more about Kendall, visit her website at KendallSummerHawk.com and IAWBC.org.

All About Fashion Sweaters: The New Office Jacket By Lisa Cole The professional dress code has changed dramatically over the past few years. Some of us still need to do the suit, but the relaxed or casual office look has a new look. Sweaters have become a substitute for the blazer. Even though it tends to be a little more leisure in appearance, the classic has taken on a more “dressy” look for the working divas of the world. Yahoo!! You can be cozy, comfortable and confident for a meeting. Yes, we have arrived. Shapewear Sweaters are the rage! You don’t have to worry about those cumbersome “back bacon” issues with this one. It has a shapewear camisole built in so you are flawless. Another option for being confident under your sweaters is a shapewear t-shirt. This has become a life saver for many women who never wanted to wear body conscious clothing. This eliminates any belly rolls and the mid section. If you get tired of wearing shapewear, this one must be added to your solutions wardrobe. To compliment your sweaters, you can choose any bottom that works for you. The flared skirt is a must have this season. Right below the knee is the current trend and ideal for pairing with boots or vintage inspired shoes. Dressed for success has a new look…Enjoy the trend and create a look that works for your business and your lifestyle. Photos courtesy of Bali, Nordstrom.com and Miracle Body. All About Business 5 Easy Steps to Reach Your Big Money Goals By Katrina Sawa One thing I see over and over again with the entrepreneurs that I speak with each month is that they don’t usually know how many people they need to get in front of every month in order to reach the amount of sales or clients that they want. You’ve got to crunch the numbers and do the math before you go out marketing or you may not be reaching enough prospects with your message. That may be the reason you aren’t making the amount of sales that you want. 5 Steps to Reaching Your Big Money Goals: 1. First you need to know how much money you need to bring home every month so you can pay all your bills and you won’t be stressed (I start with the need number because most entrepreneurs aren’t even making this goal.) 2. Now determine how many clients you need or how many products or programs you need to sell in order to reach your need number 3. Next figure out how many people you actually need to talk to in order to sell that many people – what is your closing ratio? 4. Then because not everyone you get in front of or market to will actually talk to you, you need to figure out how many people do you actually need to get in front of or market to in order to have the right amount of people you want to talk to (Try adding a zero to the number you’re thinking! Definitely no less than 1000 people every month.) This number is what you base your marketing strategy plan on. 5. Then once you can consistently hit your need number in sales or revenue you can think about how much you really want to make each month and repeat these steps. (Try doubling what the need number was to start.) © Copyright 2011 K. Sawa Marketing International Inc. All About The Office Take the Time to Set Goals By Lisa Kanarek Last week while my friend and I had lunch, we talked about goals. She said that while she was cleaning out her home office, she found a list of goals from 5 years ago. As she read through the list, she realized she had reached all of her goals and had shot too low. She said that if she had known how easily she was going to achieve her goals, she would have aimed higher. Before you set goals, consider a few questions. How realistic are your goals? Aim for high goals, but not so high that you’ll never reach them. As you reach one goal, it will be easier to reach even more goals. Focus on the results you want, and base your goals on those results. Are your goals measurable? It’s hard to reach a goal when you’re unclear about what you want to achieve. If your goal is to double your business this year, be specific about the percentage you want to reach. Then list the steps you need to take to reach that goal. Will your daily tasks help you achieve your goals? Take a close look at your todo list. Do the tasks on your list match your goals or are they completely unrelated? You’ll have a better chance of reaching your goals if the tasks you focus on will take you one step closer to your goals. Take the time to set realistic goals that will take you and your business to the next level. More importantly, don’t forget to refer to your goals often.

Lisa Kanarek is one of the nation’s leading home office experts and the author of five books, including Working Naked: A guide to the bare essentials of home office life. She has been featured—as an author and in interviews—in hundreds of publications including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Newsweek and Entrepreneur, and has shared her expertise on several national programs, including Good Morning America, CNN Financial News, and CNBC, among others. Lisa is also the founder of HomeOfficeLife, a consulting firm that advises home-based business owners on all aspects of working from home and is founder of WorkingNaked.com.

“Whatever you do in this life, take time to sit quietly and let the world tell you what it needs from you. Take a moment to honestly understand what your gifts are—you have them.” Ann Reed

ing it? They are like a magnet. Well, as you get more creative with your business, more people will be attracted to you as well. More clients, more Joint Ventures, more opportunities. So by cultivating your resourcefulness with creative thinking you will be more attractive to bigger opportunities. (Continued from page 12 - Stop the Marketing Madness)

everything I post is within my overall social media strategy. Social media is how I am connected to many of you. That is also how I have independent area directors all over the country and even Canada promoting the magazine. You have options— Facebook, Twitter, YouTube which we’ll talk about more when I cover the video essential. Set it up, get a profile page, get a business or fan page, set your Facebook posts to auto post to Twitter or use Hootsuite. This doesn’t need to be difficult or time consuming. I don’t advocate playing games or searching for your old high school boyfriend. I log in first thing in the morning and post a blog link or a question – I’ll usually come back mid day and reply if someone commented or comment on other posts and I might look again in the evening. I share our website articles, I post events from our calendar—it is another tool I use to get the word out and connet with my clients and my readers! Yes, I post some personal stuff too because I need clients and prospective clients to get a sense of me, who I am and what I value – but you will never see me play Farmville or any other game for that matter!! These are just two more resources in an arsenal of marketing tools. Marketing needs to be a continuous flow of “touches” to prospect and existing clients. And an email marketing piece will be read by someone who will never read a social media post. In fact, I recently conducted a survey of some of my readers and I found that some who read my print and ezine blast, but don’t visit my website, that there are many who read the electronic email but don’t ever use Facebook, etc. This just confirms that we need to be in multiple places (print, email, mail, video, social media, events, etc) and only putting one marketing technique into use will reach a very small portion of our potential clients! Stay tuned for our next issue….. And essentials #5, 6 & 7! Cathy is the CEO of What’s Up For Kids and Today’s Innovative Woman. Cathy became an entrepreneur mom in 1995 when she launched What’s Up For Kids, a magazine and event company serving local families in Los Angeles. In working with entrepreneur moms through the National Association of Entrepreneur Moms, she realized a need for a publication serving smart, savvy entrepreneur women. In 2011, Cathy published the first issue of Today’s Innovative Woman filled with articles from business tips and resources to food, fashion, and fun! Cathy was awarded the 2011 Top 50 Momprenuer of the Year award by Babble.com and has been featured on cbs.com and KFWB news radio in Los Angeles.

A Final Thought….. Now is the time to get all your plans, goals and intentions written for 2012. It’s a new year, fresh beginnings, a clean slate! The possibilities are endless and the opportunities are right outside that door! Step through and see what's on the other side for you in the coming year! TodaysInnovativeWoman.com 31
