“New ideas come in design when you respect the principles, but are willing to break the rules.” -Gary Koerner

Gary P. Koerner, AIA, NCARB President / Founder

Gary Koerner had one of the greatest fortunes in life when, in 1979 as a young architect, he was given the opportunity to design the Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas, Texas. Little did he know that the Mansion, a 142 room boutique hotel, would set in motion the new standard for the luxury hospitality market as it evolved over the next three decades. Outside of his firm, which he founded in 1983, each year he designs one or two private residences for the very purpose of understanding his clientele, tapping into how they live and what they expect in accommodations when traveling. Gary has been spoken of as “an idea guy”. His passion has always been to seek solutions to design problems that are never formulaic or trendy but instead bring value to the marketplace through creativity. Always questioning and improving the standard for design, Gary spearheads each concept design program and consistently creates unique and memorable luxury experiences.

The virtues of architecture are ‘firmness, commodity and delight’ -Leon Battista Alberti

Carl S. Ede Principal / Director of Design Carl Ede is known as “the nice guy” in the office. He is always open to another person’s point of view and works hard at listening and understanding where people are coming from. Recognizing that a building is never for only one person but must work as a collective experience, Carl believes a project is most successful when it incorporates multiple points of view, but at the same time, creates a unique personality related to the culture and the context. That is why Carl believes in the collaborative design process. Bringing all the design consultants together to collaborate with the owner and operator, is sometimes a messy process. It takes a thoughtful, diplomatic person to guide the numerous ideas and visions into a successful, unified whole. Carl has demonstrated this skill on a series of very diverse projects. Key to pulling the team together is developing the conceptual framework for the projects with descriptive words and phrases, mood pictures and a series of sketch solutions. This is where Carl shines. He loves to incorporate the team’s input into quick free-handed perspective sketches to help the owner visualize the potential solutions. Once the overall conceptual vision is set, it shapes all the other decisions. Carl is adamant about taking the concept through the entire process, from the big picture to the smallest detail. He is passionate about striving for the highest quality design within the constraints of the project’s budget. He has developed great working relationships with both clients, operators and consultants.

“A structure becomes architectural, and not structural, when its elements no longer have their justification in nature.” -Guillaume Apollinaire

Jalil Amine Associate / Senior Designer

Jalil Amine credits his curious nature and sensitivity to his multicultural background. Growing up in Morocco and educated in Belgium and France, one might say he could easily adapt to different environments. But in fact, he has the unique ability to interpret the “sense of place” into each distinctive project he is involved in with three. Jalil believes that the architecture always speaks of tradition in a modern voice that invites commentary and dialogue. His hospitality design is not just about style, it is about living traditions open to adaptation and response to region, climate, nature and culture, which he experiences throughout numerous projects overseas. The experience starts with the initial concept and the communication of ideas and is as important as the design itself. Understanding the power of visual graphic design while being very methodical and organized, Jalil uses these skills to unify and focus his team. Design has taken Jalil all over the world where his inspirations dip into culture, location and people. Out of all the exotic places he has experienced, in his opinion, Tahiti is “as close to paradise as one can get.”
