Introduction to Drums ď‚—

Drums have been used around the world from the prehistoric times and appears in all shapes and sizes. They make a sound when the stretched membrane is struck with an object. when the membrane is struck it vibrates and produce a sound.



History of Drums ď‚—

Drums made with alligator skins have been found in Neolithic cultures located in China, dating to a period of 5500–2350 BC. In literary records, drums manifested shamanistic characteristics were often used in ritual ceremonies.


Uses of Drum ď‚—

Drums are usually played by striking with the hand, or with one or two sticks. In jazz, some In many traditional cultures, drums have a symbolic function and are used in religious ceremonies. Drums are often used in music therapy, especially hand drums, because of their tactile nature and easy use by a wide variety of people


Different Types of Drums ď‚—

Depending on what style of music you want to play there are a lot different drum kits and sizes out there. It all comes down to personal preference; however the size is always an important factor.


Congas ď‚—

These tall, Cuban drums are usually played in groups of two or three. Conga drums come in three different sizes: quinto (small), conga/tres dos (medium), and tumba (large).


Bongos 

Bongo drums are AfroCuban, small, and often played in conjunction with the congas. The smaller drum is called the “macho” and the larger drum is known as the “hembra.”


Pandeiro ď‚—

A Brazilian instrument played with the fingers, thumbs, and palms on the head, along with the fingers/thumbs on its platinelas (jingles).


Djembe ď‚—

The djembe is a very popular hand drum from West Africa. It may be rope-tuned or mechanically tuned (Westernized). They may have goatskin heads (shaved or not) or synthetic heads.


Bodhran ď‚—

This Irish/Celtic frame drum can be played by hand or with various types of beaters, known as tippers. Bodhran drums may or may not be tunable.
