The Emotional
UPS and DOWNS of Toddlers
By Dr. Tovah P. Klein, Ph.D.
The toddler years are trying and tender - they come with unmatched joys and challenges. Often referred to as the ‘Terrible Twos’, tantrums can become commonplace, and learning how to handle them is something of a rite of passage for new parents. This developmental stage is foundational to who your child will become. Understanding what underlies the tumult of this period can make life easier for you and allow you to focus more on the joys and pleasures of raising your little one. The newness of your toddler’s brain drives the upheavals of this time - it will take another 20 years or more to reach full brain development. Toddlers are figuring out how to be separate from their parents and are gaining a sense of self, but they also don’t want to be alone in the world. The fierce pushpull of needing to know mummy or daddy is close, coupled with powerful desires to explore on their own, spurs on meltdowns. “I want to do it myself” conflicts with “I need you!” The new emotions that arise, including anger and frustration, coupled with the brain’s lagging capabilities to control them, complicate this process. Toddlers become increasingly emotion-flooded. They are not being bad. Your child is overwhelmed and in need of support. Tantrums need not be avoided. They are learning moments that happen when a child is flooded and lacking the language needed to communicate or handle the hard feelings. Meltdown! Do all you can to not take it personally. Toddlers need responsible adults to stay calm when they are upset. They feel your emotions and loving presence.
Empathy and recognition go a long way - everyone wants to be understood, even when desires cannot be indulged. Labeling their desires helps them manage limits. This is how we begin to help children handle disappointment (a part of life forever!) Instead of saying, “How many times have I told you no cookies before dinner?” Try empathy: “I know how much you love cookies. I am going to put them on the counter for after,” or, “You really wanted to play more at the playground. I wish we could stay longer. You can be mad about leaving!” Toddlers live in the moment - their desire right now is the only one they know. A key parent role is to recognise the moment matters in a big way to them. Help them feel understood by stating their desire and eventually they will be able to move on. Seeing your toddler as new to the world, and remembering that they are figuring out life with experimentation and exploration, will allow you to take a step back. Give them room to be on their own, with you close by. Watch them explore. Wonder together about what they see, hear and discover. Allow them to try for themselves - and yes, to stumble. Comfort as needed, but let them do it. And go light on yourself – there is no such thing as a perfect parent, nor should you strive for that. Instead, keep your humour, stay light in response to tough situations, and enjoy these truly magical years.
Dr. Tovah P. Klein, dubbed “the toddler whisperer” by US TV’s Good Morning America, is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development. Her new book How Toddlers Thrive: What parents can do today for children ages 2 to 5 to plant the seeds of lifelong success is available to buy now at www.profilebooks.com

GLUTEN FREE
HALLOWEEN CUPCAKES Cupcakes (serves 8): » 250g Gluten free plain flour » 2tbsp Cocoa powder » 1tsp Baking powder » 100g Softened butter » 150g Caster sugar » 1tbsp Red food colouring » 2 Eggs » 150ml Milk
Chocolate Frosting & DEcoration: » 55g Softened butter » 90g Milk or Dark cooking chocolate » 215g Icing sugar » 2 Drops of Vanilla Extract/Essence » 88ml Milk » 2 packs of Fruit Bowl Peelers » 1 bag Fruit Bowl Yogurt coated raisins, halved widthways » 1 bag Fruit Bowl Fruit Flakes cut into pieces
CUPCAKES: 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/ Gas Mark 4. 2. Sieve the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder and mix together. 3. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter, sugar, red food colouring, eggs and milk. Mix well. 4. Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet mixture. Mix well. 5. Pour the mixture into cupcake cases. Bake in the oven for 20 mins until the cakes are soft and springy to touch. Place on a wire rack to cool. FROSTING: 1. Melt the chocolate and butter in a bowl over a pan of boiling water or in a microwave. 2. In a bowl, combine the icing sugar, vanilla and 60ml of the milk. 3. Add the melted chocolate mixture and the remaining milk a little at a time until the desired consistency is achieved. Let the icing stand until spreadable (the frosting will thicken as it cools). 4. Once the cupcakes are cooled, pipe or spread the frosting onto the cupcakes. DECORATION: 1. To make the body, take 1 strand from a Peeler and roll into a spiral. Secure with a blob of icing and place on the cupcake. 2. To make the legs, cut Peeler pieces into 5cm strips (8 in total), position them on the cake coming out of the spider body. 3. Add 2 Yogurt halves and 2 fruit flakes for the eyes.

One of the reasons I wrote Meee in a Family Minute was to help families, including my own, to stay connected regardless of the inevitable ups and downs of family life. We can’t postpone the relationship building and fun for the annual holiday, hoping that two weeks in the sun will miraculously solve any outstanding issues. Sometimes we need new ideas or new ways of thinking and relating to each other – right now. And that is true during a pandemic or not. Here are a couple of ideas to help you improve your family life: By Sid Madge, Author and Social Entrepreneur
Majestic in the Domestic
There are chores to do, washing to complete, a laundry basket bursting with ironing opportunities and the endless question of ‘What will we have for dinner?’ Find the majestic in the domestic. Create a playlist for your household routines and crank up the volume – being mindful of your neighbours of course. Make it a family affair and everyone does their chores to the same music, punctuated by some dancing around the living room or karaoke style sing-along. Make the boring fun and get it done. Take a minute to come up with a family chore playlist, each family member chooses two or three songs they love, compile the list and turn it into a sort of musical chairs for chores. Whoever gets their song first, (might be best to use the ‘shuffle’ option) starts to do their task first and so on. Once everyone has started, it will take no time to get everything done.
Foster Resilience
Bad things happen to good people all the time. We are living through very unusual times and it offers us a great opportunity to teach resilience to our children. We need to allow our children enough space to solve their own problems. As parents, we should be supportive and listen to how our children would fix the problem, asking questions so as to help them arrive at a constructive solution. Take a minute to think about the last time your children faced a problem. Did you rush in to fix it, or did you support them and encourage them to solve the problem themselves? We may want to take away the distress, but if we do, we rob them of the opportunity to solve their own challenges and build much-needed resilience. Family is messy but in just one minute it is possible to deepen our connection to each other and get back on track.
For more ideas like these, check out Sid Madge’s book ‘Meee in a Family Minute - 60 ways to improve your family life in 60 seconds’ – part of the ‘Meee in a Minute’ book series. The power of positive play! If you ask parents what they wish for their children, above all they say to be happy and healthy. Cherry Trees at Brookes School has built its ethos around that concept.
Relaxed, happy and confident children are far more likely to flourish at school and in adult life. So building on four decades of Montessori experience, Cherry Trees near Risby, Bury St Edmunds, has placed happiness and wellbeing at the heart of its philosophy, creating an environment that sparks curiosity and creativity, and provides buckets of experiential learning through play. From the moment you arrive at the rural campus of Brookes School (where Cherry Trees is located) you can sense the school’s alternative, child-centred approach – something the Brookes team is extremely proud of.
Put the Cleaning of Your Home in Our Expert Hands CALL US TODAY FOR A FREE CONSULTATION
Children can join Cherry Trees from 2 years old and parents are encouraged to start bringing their toddlers from 18 months to the weekly ‘forest school’ sessions (Wednesdays 9-11am) to experience the benefits it offers. Outdoor learning is also an important part of the Cherry Trees approach. And – Covid-19 restrictions permitting – youngsters in nursery also get to enjoy time with older students in the main school. There’s a close-knit family feel where everyone gets to know each other and looks out for one another. Situated just a few minutes from the A14, children at Cherry Trees benefit from the safe and spacious rural grounds of Brookes. The nursery is open 48 weeks a year, Monday to Friday 8am to 5:30pm and offers Government funded places for 15 and 30 hours. For those looking for an alternative approach, Cherry Trees is well worth a look.

HOW TO LOOK AFTER
THE MENTAL WELLBEING of the whole family By Dr Lynda Shaw, neuroscientist, business psychologist and change specialist.
COVID-19 and the uncertainty around it is alarming for all of us and, for many, our anxiety levels are on high alert - and this includes our children. So how can we keep our anxiety in check and get the balance right? Uncertainty is difficult - The brain finds ‘the unknown’ the hardest to deal with and research shows that uncertainty is scarier and more alarming than known outcomes, even if they are bad outcomes. Be truthful with your children but share with them age appropriate information.
Reduced socialising can obviously deeply affect our mood. Humans are social creatures and when we hang out with people we like, feel good hormones like dopamine and oxytocin are released and reward neural activity is stimulated in the brain. This is often even more true for children. Stick carefully to social distancing rules but also communicate with others in a variety of virtual ways as you probably have already been doing. Thinking of social distancing activities that may be a bit different such as fishing, football, book a narrow boat, falconry, visiting national trust properties, horse-riding or playing tennis. It all counts to fill the soul a little.
Accept that this is a time when it is hard to make plans and always be able to stick to them. Control and organise what you can to a reasonable extent if it brings you comfort but don’t fixate and go to extremes. Use language with your children such as “we hope that will be able to do XX, but as you know at the moment we need to be flexible” and give them something they can count on doing such as having a great time doing something as a family at home together.
We often see the very best in people in very difficult times. Think if you can help any family members, friends or neighbours in any way, whether that is going for the shop for them or picking up meds. See if you can involve the children too. Can they clean the neighbour’s car or weed the garden?
Anxiety is bad for our health - Whilst this is a difficult time, make time for activities that relax you and release feel good hormones like yoga, reading or cooking. Turn off news alerts on your phone if they are making you feel on edge.
Catastrophising and panicking about what might happen rarely helps. Chronic panic causes you to live in a state of trepidation and confusion. Don’t let your imagination run wild and accept that some things in life are unknown and unpredictable. Be confident that you have the strength and versatility to overcome challenges when required and that this difficult period will pass in time.
Make good use of the time. Is it time to do some gardening together, paint a fence, shed or child’s bedroom, do fitness videos that the children can join in, things you said you never had time to do? Alternatively, just spend time relaxing and being in the moment with your family.

Being panicked makes people susceptible to ‘fake news’ – when the brain perceives a threat, it works very hard to neutralise the hazard and make you safe again. Stress hormones decrease your rationality and critical thinking and make you more susceptible to inaccurate information. Avoid listening to other’s ‘strong opinions’ and check government websites for official advice. Talk to your children about what is fact and what isn’t known at this point.
Prioritise self-care like eating well, exercising, virtual socialising, doing your hobby, planning nice things to do when this is all over, reducing your time on social media and sleeping as best you can. Have a positive mindset – Research shows that positivity is also contagious so approach your home isolation period with as much zeal and positivity as possible, and your family members, especially children, will catch on to the positive vibes. Research also shows that outcomes are better for positive people. Make sure you go outside each day – Spend at least 20 minutes a day outside, ideally in the morning to help maintain your circadian rhythm and to get a dose of vitamin D. Open the windows and get some fresh air coming in. If you have big open spaces around your house, go for an invigorating walk.
Anxious minds do not sleep well - Sleep loss only adds to the stress which is the very thing stopping us sleeping. When you are overtired you have trouble concentrating, are less productive and feel irritable. Don’t watch or read about the news just before bed if the content is making you feel dismayed. Equally don’t talk to your children about worrying things before bed. Have a relaxing bedtime routine revolving around reading a book, a warm bath, or a bit of mindfulness. Fear can be transmitted to other people – Chronic anxiety about potential future dangers can cause low mood, short tempers and grouchiness. Children in particular will pick up on your anxious mood and sense of dread which can trigger their own feelings of stress. Be aware that this happens and control your emotions, so they don’t control you or infiltrate those around you.
Limit your time on social media – Your teenagers in particular may feel more than ever that their phone is their portal to the outside world. However, it is well documented that spending significant amounts of time on social media can increase feelings of isolation and loneliness. Advise them to limit themselves to 30 minutes of social media a day and avoid it at night. Cherish some family time – It’s harder to go the same day trips you enjoyed before COVID arrived, but that also gives you the opportunity to enjoy some real quality time together with the people you live with. Make a plan for each day so you don’t lounge on the sofa too much. Be creative and come up with fun activities that you are normally too busy for like board games, baking together, making a beauty salon and painting nails or a den to hang out in, start an ambitious art project together or watch some classic family films together with a bag of popcorn or even enjoy a nice lie-in.
Don’t descend into treating each other badly – During times of confusion and anxiety our stress hormones rise, we sleep less and consequently can be more irritable and shorter tempered. Be aware that this happens and make a conscious effort to smile and be positive. Positivity also rubs off on people, so smile and find things to laugh about, one of our best healers. Dr Lynda Shaw is a change specialist, a regular professional speaker, chartered psychologist and cognitive neuroscientist (as well as a Fellow of The Royal Society of Medicine, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Fellow of the Professional Speaking Association and author of adult and children’s books). www.drlyndashaw.com. HOW TO GET RID OF YOUR CHILD’S
Dummy
The old saying: “Kids don’t come with a manual” does not ring truer when it comes to letting go of the dummy! It’s understandable that our little ones will fiercely protect their dummy. Dummies are one of the only items in their life over which they have complete ownership. Adults and older siblings do not use or play with ‘their’ dummy. Not only that, removing the dummy is perhaps one of the first real parenting hurdles. It can be the first time, as a parent, we’ve entered into negotiations. We’re doing ‘the right thing’, but this can result in a lot of trauma (at the time) for your little one. It’s no surprise then, that so many of us cave to the toddler’s relentless requests for their dummy and subsequent upset if these are refused! It’s recently been revealed that over half of us (52%) don’t know the right time for children to give up the dummy, putting teeth and speech development at risk. The NHS advises parents should stop giving the dummy between 6 and 12 months old*. Using dummies after this can encourage an open bite, which is when teeth move to make space for the dummy. There is also a concern that it may also affect children’s speech development. The rule of thumb is – children should not have a dummy once they are forming words. But, nearly 1 in 5 men demonstrated a laissez faire approach to parenting, believing that children will let go of the dummy when they are ready to do so – avoiding the battle altogether! *
Laura Smart, dentist at Birmingham Dental Hospital and Leicester CDS-CIC, says: “Children who use a dummy or suck their thumb are more likely to have problems with the way their teeth bite together than children who don’t. The risk of this happening increases the more the child uses a dummy and the older they are when they give the dummy up.” The reality is that, with nearly 9 in 10 parents allowing their children to use a dummy and half using it for too long, many parents need help to encourage their toddlers say “toodle-loo” to their dummies. This same dilemma was faced by dad of two, and Dumbleby Forest author, Mark White. He said: “My wife and I had tried all sorts, but our daughters are incredibly strong-willed, and to be honest we took the path of least resistance for too long. They found it incredibly hard to say goodbye to the dummy and only did so after I created a magical world for the dummies to disappear to called Dumbleby Forest.”
SAFE DUMMY USE •
Never use a dummy with a neck cord or other attachments as this may lead to choking
•
Don’t force your baby to take a dummy or put it back in if your baby spits it out.
•
Don’t put anything sweet on the dummy.
•
Keep it as clean as possible by regularly sterilising as you would any other bottle or feeding teat.
•
Check dummies regularly as cracks, splits and holes can trap germs
www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/reducing-risk-cot-death/
Mark’s bedtime story to help parents and little ones say goodbye to the dummy has now been realised in a beautifully illustrated children’s book available from www.dumblebyforest.com for £5.79. Oct-Dec Oct-Dec 2020 2020 Toddle Toddle About About Suffolk Suffolk 23 23
