New Mums Meet Mondays at Rugrats

Following news about the closure of several children’s centres in Northamptonshire, Rugrats and Halfpints Children’s Activity Centre in Banbury has launched new sessions on Monday mornings, 9:30 - 11:30am, for newborns to pre-walkers (£1 per child) to give mothers somewhere else they can meet. Will Have a Febrile Convulsion

Would you know what to do? As parents we all know it is likely that your child will develop a high temperature from time to time. It is really important that you seek medical advice early, follow your instincts and, if you suspect your child’s condition is getting worse, act quickly. Most parents will already know this and have looked after their child when they have been unwell, but what some parents are unaware of is that 1 in 20 children under 5 have febrile convulsions when they have a fever. Here is Marie from Daisy First Aid’s short guide to febrile convulsions:

A febrile convulsion is a seizure, brought on by a rapid increase in body temperature.

As the area of the brain that regulates body temperature (the hypothalamus) is not fully developed until around the age of 4, a febrile convulsion can happen when an infection makes the core temperature of the body rise quickly to above 38⁰c.

The signs are: • Loss of consciousness • Every muscle of the body becomes rigid • Arching of the back

What can I do to help?

• Arms and legs shaking uncontrollably

Try to remain as calm as you can.

• Twitching

Place the child on a safe flat surface, like the floor or a double bed. Although it is natural to want to comfort the child, do not hold the child or restrain them. If you are worried they are going to be sick, turn them safely onto their side. Ensure their head is protected to prevent a head injury. Do not put anything in their mouth. Call 999. When the convulsion stops, check the child’s airway and breathing. If both are ok, put them in the recovery position and monitor their airway and breathing until help arrives. It is likely they will be very sleepy, this is usual, so let them rest. In the unlikely event that the child is not breathing or stops breathing start CPR. Ensure clothing and bedclothes are removed to help cool them down.

• Jerky movements • Rolling of the eyes • Clenched jaw • Foaming of the mouth They only last a few minutes but they can be very frightening and distressing to watch. In most cases it is not serious and they do not cause any long term damage. They are not linked to epilepsy.

A Special Baby-led Playtime Turning normal play on its head to help you connect with your baby By Becky Wylde, Clinical Lead at NorPIP, The Northamptonshire Parent Infant Partnership

This play idea is a recipe for something different that will nourish your relationship with your baby or toddler. It is a special kind of child-led play which is known as “Watch, Wait and Wonder”. It looks very simple to begin with, but it can have a remarkably positive effect on both baby and parent. The key is making some time, only five or 10 minutes at a time, maybe 2 or 3 times a week, to be focused solely on your child and following their lead.

The Game Make a quiet space for just you and your little one. Turn off the telly and put your mobile to silent. Then: Get down on the floor with your little one and a few nice toys and WaTCh your baby. Do not initiate anything but WaIT and tune into the baby’s world. WaIT for the baby or toddler’s initiative - let it come from them and then follow their lead. Be sure to respond when the infant initiates but do not take over the activity in any way. Allow the infant to explore and do what ever they want to do so long as it is safe. They are in the driving seat for a change. WONDeR what it is they are interested in? What is in their little mind? And what it is that they are communicating to you? WONDeR how it feels for them to be the centre of the activity and how it feels for you to let them be there. WONDeR more about what your baby feels and enjoys - what makes them happy or sad, frightened or delighted. WONDER at your own growing understanding of your little one.

You might also wonder why this would make any difference! Well, the answer is that our babies are very responsive and very sensitive to the level of our attention. ‘Watch , Wait and Wonder’ gives baby an experience of being not just in the centre of things but actually leading the play and communication. This is very good for them as it grows their capacity to communicate, and their feeling of security. Being noticed and responded to helps our babies and toddlers develop in wellbeing and confidence. It also helps us as parents to develop our relationship with them - it’s not all one-sided! Parents often find this simple exercise very difficult as it is so different to sit back, wait and allow the little one to initiate. We are so used to playing in an active way, taking the lead and encouraging our babies to play. This child-led play turns all that on its head and it can feel really strange at first. But keep trying! With practice, you will find you both enjoy it and feel relaxed and energised.

NorPIP provide specialist therapy from qualified parent infant therapists. If you’re finding it tough, don’t be afraid to seek help, in confidence, by contacting their team on 01604 924735 (Monday to Thursday, 9-5pm). Depending on your circumstances, sessions may well be free of charge (paid sessions cost up to £40).

Northamptonshire Parent Infant Partnership is Northamptonshire’s only parent-infant therapy service which provides help to parents to be and new parents with children up to age two who are struggling to bond. They work with parents who, because of mental health issues, postnatal depression or psychosis, are finding it difficult to connect to their baby and might be finding parenting very hard.

This is a condition called Positional Plagiocephaly or ‘Flat head syndrome’. If there is no natural improvement by the age of 4/5 months you might want to seek advice. Designer Babies By Dr Christopher Gyngell, Research Fellow at University of Oxford

An argument for genetically modified babies. For decades, technologies have been available that alter the genetic makeup of animals. Using modified viruses to introduce novel genetic material, scientists have been able to modify the physical and cognitive characteristics of a number of species. However, these early technologies were not suitable for human use. They are imprecise, and make random changes to large segments of the genome. As such, only a small proportion of the animals that are the targets of these technologies do not suffer serious side effects. In 2010, a revolution in genetic engineering began. Techniques which used engineered enzymes, rather than viruses, to alter DNA were developed. These techniques were given the name “gene editing” to reflect their increased efficiency and precision over older methods. In a very short space of time the gene editing technique CRISPR has been used to make precise and heritable changes to animals. It has been used to create malaria-fighting mosquitoes, drought resistant wheat, hornless cows and monkeys with targeted mutations. The potential applications of gene editing in a decade are difficult to imagine. Because of their increased precision, gene editing techniques are the first genetic engineering technologies to have serious potential as a clinically useful modifier of human DNA. In April 2015 it was announced that CRISPR had been used to make edits in human embryos for the first time. The study conducted in China attempted to use the CRISPR technique to reverse the genetic mutations that lead to the genetic disease muscular dystrophy 28 April-June 2016 Toddle About

– with mixed success. In February 2016, the UK became the first country to officially approve gene editing research in human embryos. The decision means experiments in which the genes of embryos are manipulated will likely begin at the Francis Crick Institute in London within the next few months. It’s important to note that the proposed UK study would use gene editing on embryos for the purposes of research only. The study seeks to understand the role that different genes play in early pregnancy. This study could result in better conventional therapies to combat infertility and miscarriage. The embryos will not be implanted into a woman, and indeed will never leave a petri dish. The UK has a unique legal position, being one of the only countries around the world to allow gene editing on embryos for research, but have a ban on any reproductive uses. However, in the future, this law could change, and it may become possible to use such technologies for the purpose of reproduction –to create genetically modified babies. But if gene editing technologies were safe, legal and available to use on a developing embryo, would it be ethical to use them? I think it would be. Some people worry that if gene-editing technologies were available, then we put the human race on a slippery slope to the creation of ‘designer babies’. But I believe we have strong moral reasons to use these technologies to protect our future children from disease and suffering. Changing your child’s genes to improve their health is consistent with good parenting.

This is believed to make the developing child more resistant to bone disease like rickets, and autoimmune diseases like asthma and multiple sclerosis. We generally think pregnant women who take vitamin D supplements are acting responsibly. But vitamin D also alters the genes of the developing child – it changes the way its genes are expressed. If we think women should take vitamin D supplements in pregnancy, we therefore think it is OK to make some genetic changes to a developing child in order to improve their health.

People’s main objection to gene editing technologies stems from the fact they could be used not just to protect children from disease, but to also influence their other traits. People shudder at the thought of parents picking and choosing the characteristics of their children, just as they pick and choose the accessories for their nurseries. We do have good reasons to be concerned about this prospect.

Gene editing technologies make a different sort of genetic change to an embryo than vitamin D supplements. They change the genetic sequence, rather than the way genes are expressed. However, suppose that we discover that vitamin D supplements actually did work by changing the genetic sequence of a developing embryo? Would this discovery mean that we should advise women to stop taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy? I think not. What’s important is that taking vitamin D supplements while pregnant protects the developing child from developing diseases later in life. The mechanism through which this is achieved is irrelevant. In the future it will be possible to use gene editing technologies to make a small number of genetic changes to protect our children from disease. The total length of the human genome is over 3 billion base pairs. In some cases, changing just one base pair in an embryo will prevent horrible diseases later in life. That means changing less than 0.0001% of your child’s genome can protect them from suffering. This seems clearly ethically justified to me.

Genes fashionable in one generation may prove to be harmful in the next. In addition, parental control of the gene pool could reduce valuable forms of genetic diversity. However, a fear of designer babies should not distract us from the goal of healthy babies. There is no reason we couldn’t limit the use of gene editing technologies to disease prevention, just as we currently do with PGD.

Furthermore, many now accept the use of technologies such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) to select against inherited disease like cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy. This involves creating several embryos and testing each for genetic predispositions to disease. The healthiest embryo is then implanted, and the others are often destroyed. If it is acceptable to use PGD to avoid disease, it’s not clear why it would be unacceptable to create just one embryo and use gene editing technologies to correct any disease causing genes. When used in this way, gene editing is the moral equivalent of curing a disease.

That is not to say I think we should be using gene editing technologies now. I am glad the UK has a ban on the reproductive uses of gene editing technologies, as it will be many years until we know whether these technologies will be safe enough to use for reproduction. However, in a decade or so, if these technologies have been proven safe and precise enough for human use – I believe we will have strong moral reasons to change the law and use them to protect our children from disease and suffering.

By the time your baby is potty trained, they could have used between 4000 - 6000 disposable nappies. Most nappies are made from plastic, which does not rot down and the UK throws away a staggering 3 billion nappies every year. Cloth nappies present an excellent, but often misunderstood, way to prevent all this waste.

REal Nappy Myths Having to wasH tHe nappies negates tHe benefits

Real nappies really are good for the environment AND your purse. Full cloth nappy kits (from birth to potty) start from £195 for a good system. Disposable will cost between £800 - £1500. Extra washing comes to a surprisingly small sum of just £1 per week, so you save over £500 with real nappies. Not to mention the fact that you can use the same nappies with your second child – or that you can sell them on after you’ve finished with them! Environmentally, using real nappies instead of disposables can reduce your household’s global warming impact by up to 40%.

In fact, modern cloth nappies are really easy to use.

You don’t need to sterilise, boil, scrub or soak them. Nowadays, flushable liners let you dispose of the mess quickly; used nappies are put in a mesh bag in a bucket. The whole mesh bag is then popped in the washing machine to wash between 40-60 degrees.

Actually, disposable nappies can cause more nappy rash than their cloth counterparts. Disposable nappies contain an absorbent chemical gel which sits close to your baby’s skin and can cause irritation. In contrast, having a natural fabric against your baby’s skin can reduce nappy rash.

(First of a series of articles on children’s emotional well-being by Play Therapy UK).

One in ten children in the UK have a mental health issue and another one in ten have a psychological problem that impairs their potential to develop fully. Most adult mental health issues have their roots in childhood problems. Do you know a child who finds it difficult to concentrate or learn? Can’t control their anger? Suffers from anxiety or stress? Has experienced loss through bereavement or divorce? Is adopted or fostered? They would probably benefit from play therapy. Between 77% and 84% of children receiving play therapy to Play Therapy UK standards show a positive change.

Why Play Therapy works so well

Play is a natural process that is essential for the development of a child’s brain and mind. Recent discoveries in neurobiology have shown that beneficial chemicals such as opioids and Oxytocin are released naturally as a result of play. The amygdala is calmed and the hippocampus is repaired. Play Therapy uses metaphors and fantasies which have been shown to be a more effective way of communication when dealing with the emotions. But it’s more than just letting a child play.

What is Play Therapy? Play therapy provides a safe environment, with boundaries, in which the child can choose from a variety of therapeutic media such as as toys, drawing, music, puppets, sand worlds, clay, story-telling etc. The therapist communicates with them using their chosen medium to help their healing process.

The Play Therapist provides a safe environment in which the child can heal themselves. They provide safe boundaries, reflections when appropriate and a very close focus on the child. Play Therapists help to co-ordinate the rational brain with the emotional systems of the mammalian brain. By Play Therapy UK

Could you foster? Would you? Foster carers are ordinary, regular people that perform an extraordinary role. They support some of the most vulnerable children and young people within our society, often with little recognition for their hard work and dedication. Fostering is an immense commitment for the whole family, requiring you to work with a number of people across many professions. As a foster carer, you will more than likely have to deal with tears, tantrums, arguments, challenges, vulnerabilities and disappointments. I guess I’m not selling this to you right now but, despite the downsides, fostering is a wonderfully rewarding career. When a child in your care expresses a smile of acknowledgement or holds your finger for comfort – or you receive a nod of respect from a teenager, then it all becomes worthwhile and you don’t need thanks or accolades.

Fostering is a family commitment I’m entering my ninth year as a foster carer and in those years my wife and I have fostered seven children and adopted a wonderful little boy as our son. I know what a difference our fostering community can make to children, young people and their families. This is what my children have said: “I was almost 9 when my parents began fostering and when it was first mentioned I was excited that a new child was going to come into our family. I feel closer to my family and the adoption of one placement now provides me with a brother.”

What is Fostering?

Fostering is a way of providing a nurturing and safe environment for somebody else’s child within your own home. Depending on the type of fostering you embark on, the length of time the child or young person would be with you varies greatly. It could be days, months, or even years - regardless of the duration of their stay, they will be part of your family.

All foster carers receive a weekly fostering allowance which is intended to cover the costs of looking after a child in foster care. Some fostering services also pay their foster carers a fee on top of the allowance, in recognition of their time, skills and experience.

Could you do it?

Many myths still exist around who can apply to foster and, although no one has the right to foster, foster carers are needed from a wide diversity of backgrounds and experiences. Applications are welcomed no matter your education, ethnic or religious background, whether you are straight or gay, married or single. Come along to GymBugs, and along with our qualified pre-school coaches, you can assist your child to explore wonderful and exciting equipment such as ladders, beams and climbing apparatus whilst beginning to learn the basic skills of gymnastics. For the older children, there are more structured classes where they are taken around the apparatus by the coaches in small groups and slightly more difficult gymnastics skills are practiced. There will also be a chance in this lesson to partake in the British Gymnastics award schemes.
